STARDATE 48174.29 - USS Mihoshi MedBay

With the incident in the Transporter Room resolved, Alex is able beam back aboard the Mihoshi.

Shortly after he arrived, Lockhart called him with worry in her voice, "Dr. Dupont report to Medbay immediately!"

Alex stops, "Computer emergency beam to MedBay". Something drastic would have had to have happened for the nurse to call like that after she knew he was already on his way.

He was ready to spring into action for whatever was in MedBay.

As he was about to call in Ra’Ghul for his interview, a thought crossed his mind, “Commander Geary to Lieutenant Davis. Can you preform the Vulcan Mind Meld?”

Tekar shook his head and glanced at Geary. "Sadly no, I've learned some of the innate telepathy of my Vulcan heritage but I wasn't raised a Vulcan, and never taught how to meld with another mind." He explains, inwardly frowning at the complexity of it all. Technically the Vulcan Nerve pinch was a limited form of telepathy, but it was completely different than a mind meld at the same time.

In reply to Alex Dupont (msg # 4):

As Alex entered MedBay, he would see Lockhart standing over Brenn who remained restrained to the medical bed.  When she saw him, she said with obvious relief, "Doctor!  Thank goodness you're here!  His vitals began dropping and I can't figure out why!"

Alex knew something was off, but he couldn't put a finger on what it was! "Computer, initiate cyrostasis, get me a list of Starfleet medical specialists on Tarrakan biology, and location of Ra'Ghul."

Combadge, "Dr. Dupont to Captain Greene." When she answers, "Just notifying you that Dr. Ja'Brenn has suddenly crashed and is in Cyrostasis. I cannot find anything causing his condition and am looking for a specialist in Tarrakan biology to consult with and Ra'Ghul if he's still onboard."

Farah had only begun to disgest Geary's report, which itself was causing her some indigestion, when Alex called.  "What in the actual hell is going on over there, Doctor?" she exclaimed, not meaning to beat up Alex, but her frustration clearly showing.  "Geary said Ja'Brenn was injured in a fight and now you're saying you had to put him in stasis?"  She let out a heavy sigh.  "I'll find someone, but unless he managed to sneak off, Ra'Ghul is still aboard the Mihoshi."

Alex ever the patient man, "I'm sorry captain, I was called back from the station for the dislocated should and I barely arrived back onboard to being updated by the nurse that he was crashing. I did what I could to prevent another senseless death. None of this makes sense. I have the computer doing a search for Tarrakan specialists as we speak."

Alex is beginning to wonder if the ship scanners are calibrated to Tarrakan biology, something benign to another species but lethal or dangerous to the Tarrakans perhaps.

"Computer, compile a list of all known substances that can cause Tarrakan distress or death and cross-reference to other species that would not normally cause distress or lethality. Then begin scanning the patient for any traces of those substances. Parameter focus - Stress induced onsets or pain induced."

In reply to Alex Dupont (msg # 11):

The computer will report there are no known common substances aboard a Federation vessel that would be considered toxic to a Takaran.  As the Takarans are not members of the Federation, knowledge of their physiological characteristics is limited to reports from Dr. Beverly Crusher regarding her findings, including:

Takarans have the ability to slow their metabolism at a cellular level, allowing them to take massive amounts of damage with little discernible effect. The distribution and redundancy of vital organs suggests it would take decapitation or complete disruption to actually kill a Takaran.  This is reflected in their high fitness and resistance to phaser fire or melee damage. Additonally, Takaran neurology can suppress pain responses, making them effectively immune to pain.

Alex ponders this tidbit, thanks to Dr. Crusher. "Nurse, what was the exact report? They had to take him down and this resulted in a dislocated shoulder?"

Alex thinks on this more, then looks at the single security officer. Scratches his head. "How many people did it take to handle this individual?" And then back to the Tarakan in stasis and then back to the security officer. Starting to suspect something.

Taking in a deep breath and then sighing loudly before tapping the combadge, "Dr. Dupont to Security Chief zh'Idrani," Pause, "I'm informed it took several officers to take down our guest resulting in a non-lethal shoulder dislocation. Can I ask why I have only a single security officer here guarding him? I would add my patient and esteemed guest of the ships' brig has had a drastic drop in vital signs with no obvious reason, I can only suspect this is a ploy to catch us unawares and cause... Mischief. If possible, can I request additional security for the safety of my staff as I revive him to relocate his shoulder?"

And time to update the captain and XO, "Dr. Dupont to Captain Greene and Commander Geary," Pause, "After a review of Dr. Crusher's notes, I believe the patient is playing possum and had planned to escape or cause mischief. If my hypothesis is correct, he'll be back in the brig shortly after I complete my procedure. Just waiting for additional security to arrive to begin."

Making an entry in the log for the noted time for additional security and updating the captain and the XO.

As soon as the additional security arrives, the patient will be removed from Cyrostasis, Dr. Dupont will relocate the shoulder with a security screen up, and then monitor the vitals. If the vitals continue to drop, transfer the patient to the isolation/trauma room. He'll have the scans monitor the cellular activity, organ activity and even brain activity to consider the Tarakan biology from Dr. Crusher's notes. As long as those stay within what is considered normal functions, he'll do nothing else.

Geary stepped into the hallway just outside the conference room, "Dr. Dupont, I will get security up to the Medbay.  If possible, put restraints on him while you reset his shoulder."

Then making the call to security, "Commander Idrani, please send a security team armed with phasers set to stun to the Medbay.  It is possible the Dr. Brenn may try to break out of Medbay, Make this a high priotiry."

He was about to head back into the conference room when a thought crossed his mind.  "Computer, restrict all access to the shuttle bay to Command Level access only. Priority one.  Compuer, redirect any transporter use to the Brig, priority one."

After having security ready to restrain the Tarakan, he'll drop the cyrostasis, and monitor the patient.

Again, with the new parameters in place, he'll be scanning for brain activity and other activity.

Jason entered the MedBay and gave a nod to the Doc, standing by with his eyes resting on Brenn. He appeared relaxed but expected the Takaran to be as mad as a hornet on seeing Jason standing there.

"Lt. zh'Idrani wants me here," he said in explanation.

"I already reset the shoulder, Doctor," Lockhart said, not wanting to correct him, but for the sake of accuracy.  "He began crashing shortly after and I had feared there was some underlying trauma, but you're saying he's playing possum?"

With Alex releasing Brenn from stasis, a careful examination of his vitals show a return to normalcy.  Yet, just as consciousness is reached where Brenn would be aware of his surroundings, it seems as if the process begins to reverse.

Combadge to Captain Green and Commander Geary, "Dr. Dupont to Captain Greene and Commander Geary, hypothesis confirmed, patient is actively controlling his vital signs to mimic a death-like state. He is restrained and security is on standby."

Jason had his head tilted slightly as he stared at the form of Brenn laying there. Even after the Doc said the Takaran was playing possum he said nothing. Finally giving a faint smile, he stepped closer to the bed.

"Ja'Brenn, you are being charged for attacking a Federation ship, bombing the station and your own government will be charging you with 4 murders of your own people. Never thought I would see anyone betray their own world and people for money before. They say greed knows no bounds," Jason said calmly but with a bite of distaste.

"We found the schematics you were hiding. They know you are a traitor," he continued, waiting for some response from the man on the bed. And hopefully that would do it.

The medical scanners would betray that, playing possum or no, Brenn had heard Jason and Jason's word had struck a nerve.  With Alex knowing what to look for, he could see that Brenn was struggling to maintain control, especially when Jason spoke the word "traitor."

It took Lockhart a moment to get over the shock of what Jason was accusing Brenn of having done, but she surprised no one more than herself when she murmured, "I think you hit a nerve, Mr. Walker.  Might I suggest hitting it harder?"

Jason leaned closer, giving the Doc a brief grin. "Ra'Ghul is spilling everything he knows, pointing the finger at you to save himself. Honor among thieves you think? Was it you or was it him that decided that betraying your people and your allies was better? Right now, he's saying it was all your idea, that you threatened him if he didn't help you. Is that true, Traitor?" He continued to prod and poke, the meaning to the last word loud and clear. Brenn's name was 'Traitor' now.

Unable to resist the taunting, Brenn's eyes snapped open.  He struggled against the restraints, but even if he was seemingly invulnerable to pain, he was not with superhuman strength.  "You have no idea what I've done, what I've sacrificed," he seethed.  "I will be be branded a traitor, but what I did I did for the sake of my world and I will not be called a thief accused of murder for it."

In reply to Dr. Brenn (msg # 24):

Jason gave Brenn a mild, disbelieving look. "So far I've heard nothing to dissuade me from not believing you killed four of your own people," he pointed out. "Convince me, Traitor, that you are not a murder too. Right now it seems as you gave that warhead away to the enemy of not only the Federation but your own people. Think of that."

"They can easily use that on your world, much like the dirty bombs was used Earth many centuries ago. Children, the elderly, the weak... everyone. Dead in the streets. Your name struck from history as just the "traitor". A mere footnote, a blip with no meaning." He emphasized some of the words, digging harder into Brenn's psyche.

Jason stared at Brenn for a long moment in thought. It was as if the room could see the puzzle being put together by the young man and when his focus came back, it was sharp and clear. "You sacrificed nothing but your own people and your own world. Again what makes you think the Romulans will not use this weapon on your own people? You are a fool, stupid and incompetent if you think they won't."

Looking back at Alex, he gave a nod and headed out of the Med Bay, stopping in the hall.
