Mission 1: The USS Mihoshi

Malko was one of the first onto the ship when it docked.  He stopped by the XOs quarters just long enough to set his case inside before continuing to the bridge.  He recognized the lithe bond beauty meditating in the commander's chair as Catrina Matheson, and remembered that she was the primary engineer responsible for the extensive modifications on the Saber Class that resulted in the Mihoshi. He hadn't noticed the implant on the lovely young woman's pictures.  It looked like a remote control device, but he could tell it was fused into her skull.  Had she managed to desing a neural interface for some ship's system?

"Lieutenant Comander Matheson i presume?" he said with a soft smile, offering his hand.  "I'm Aurin Malko."

When the Mihoshi had docked, Catrina had begun a systems-wide diagnostic, which had sent her into what appeared to be a trance.  In fact, she hadn't heard Malko speak with her ears, rather through the ship itself, which brought her back to the physical world.  Eyes fluttering open, she looked up at the man speaking to her, then saw the pips on his uniform and immediately stood to attention.  "Sorry sir, I was running a diagnostic, she said, noticing Malko's hand, which she took.  "Yes, I'm Catrina Matheson, one of the engineers aboard the Mihoshi."

Malko smiled.  "Your record is quite extraordinary, Ms. Matheson.  I sent Professor Argyle a missive at Starfleet Academy to ask if he wanted to brag on you.  He was quite pleased to do so, vociferously."  Malko quirked a grin, remembering his own relationship with the veteran engineer who'd had taken a teaching post at Starfleet Academy.  They had gotten along rather well despite the fact that Engineering was his worst subject.

"I understand you're the primary mind behind the Mihoshi's refit?  I intend to draw extensively on your knowledge.  We can discuss that later if you'd like a rest?"

Mission 1: The USS Mihoshi

Elsewhere on the ship, Thani was boarding and preparing to drop off her personal effects in her quarters, once she could find them. The Saber-class was new to her, and it served as good reason to get directions from the ship's computer and wall consoles. Getting her bearings on the vessel was just as important as anything else. To that end, once she was in her quarters, the next plan of action was to map her way to the research labs and science station, where she figured she'd be spending a good portion of her time.

Malko blinked as Aurin quite suddenly and with complete assurance informed him of something utterly impossible.  He blinked again, then shook his head.  "Thank you Ms. Matheson.  I'm sure questions will come flooding in soon enough--from myself and many others."  Perhaps especially Kate?

Malko took the captain's chair.  He drew a PADD out of his tunic and entered the duty shifts he'd planned into the system.

Alex Dupont:
"Cmdr Malko, Dr. Dupont en-route." said over the comm link.

"Dr. Dupont," Malko replied, "Good to hear from you.  You'll be running sick bay on first shift, and on call for the others.  Please familiarize yourself with sick bay and let me know if there's anything we need to address."

Katherine Seward:
Kate arrives with a cat carrier and her things walking through the docking hatch and moving her things into the diplomatic quarters, tapping her communicator as she does. "Lt Seward to Cmdr Malko, what will Maria and my stations be for this mission?" she asked as she struggled slightly to keep Bastet calm who didn't seem to be happy about being in a strange new place with strange new smells.

"Welcome aboard Ms. Seward he said to Kate.  You will be needed at the Ops station on first shift, if you would be so kind?"

Tekar Visroy Davis:
Tekar arrives in the security office and begins to review recent activity on the ship to ensure that no stowaways are on-board.

Vanna Keyes:
Vanna arrives on the bridge and moves to take her place at the Conn console and made minor adjustments to her seat while going over system parameters to make sure the ship is actually running at factory specs.

"Lieutenant Keyes, good to see you.  How is the station matching up to the simulations?"

"Understood sir." In reply to Cmdr Malko's response. Having already reviewed the ships' layout, he quickly located his quarters, dropped off his belongings and then headed to sick bay. Once at sick bay he begins a thorough review of all equipment locations, becoming familiar with the layout and where the equipment was stored. Alex would be  noting any deficiencies that need to be addressed on his PDA. "Computer, display current inventory. Then run scan for vitals on me." Having already done a scan back at the medical bay on the Cadmus station, he wanted to see if there were any issues with the equipment before they were underway. He would then validate the inventory the computer gives him with his review to see if there are any discrepancies there.

OOC: Is the Mihoshi equipped with an emergency hologram doctor or assistance? Alex would also test that to make sure. Basically, he's got a check list of everything he expects in med bay and what schematics were provided, and wants to test everything before departing.

OOC: No EMH.  Those came a year or so later, according to canon.  Alex would be meeting with the few other non-descript NPC medical staff there.  Everything on board is shiny and new, but it stands to reason (and likely protocol) Alex would want to run full checks of everything.

Arriving at their door, she leaned in and kissed Kate, not caring who saw.  "Bastet and I will be fine. "

Seeing the duty roster Malko had put up, Istala wasn't surprised to see her name on another shift from his.  It kept things properly separate in case Farah had concerns, but then again Farah might wonder why.  Nothing she could do about it as she shrugged and looked at Vanna, "Well, looks like you get to take her out first.  Lucky..."

Mission 1: The USS Mihoshi

Much like Catrina, Jessica set herself to immediately begin checking engineers panels to run diagnostics of the ship. When Boarding, she had come in with a few suitcases and boxes that she transported herself, mostly she carried them from a nearby service conduit that she had likely stored them in so they would be closer to the docking port the Mihoshi was coming into. This would be done using an anti gravity sled.

While, as soon as her things were in her room, she took to running diagnostics as Catrina did, her approach was different from the other Engineers.
Though she made sure to do a quick check, complimenting the other engineer by going through what hadn't had a normal check. As soon as that was finished, Touching a comms device to send in the report of what the initial diagnostics showed, she doubled back and started again. She didnt want to keep the Captian, the crew, and the ship waiting but she also wanted to conduct her own checks.

This time, going through checks she would also make to look at what was being checked. Each terminal would be set to check its own station while also checking other stations for cross-check verifications.

Her process was clearly meant to be extremely thorough even though it was exceptionally tedious. She was also very much more cognizant of her surroundings and more present/mindful towards the physical world then both was her normal from all their earlier socials as well as in comparison to Catrina.

Even though Jess was going about things in a much more tedious manner, she was clearly excited and elated about what she was doing. Her face held flushed, her eyes and the corners of her leps sharpened to that of a smile, even the normal curiosity that seemed to give her eyes a little twinkle seemed intensified to a shine.

With nothing in the way of personal effects to bring, Farah left her office and headed to the Mihoshi.  The few she had were already on-board, put there during her last visit to check on the of the Mihoshi and her designer.  She had already met the crew who had brought the Mihoshi to her, she thanked them for their hard work and made a mental note to suggest commendations for it.  Once aboard, she thought to head to the bridge and take command, but decided to let Malko have some time in the chair.  She had plenty to keep her occupied.

"Greene to bridge," she announced with a tap of her comm badge.  "I'm aboard, Mr. Malko.  Get us underway to the Jorret system.  Warp 7 if you would.  We're on a clock."

It was already hard for Catrina to consider the Mihoshi anything other than her ship.  Blood, sweat and tears was a figure of speech for how much work went into such a refit, but it had been far more literal for Catrina.  A piece of her mind had been on the altar as well.  So it wasn't the easiest thing to see the young engineer come onto the Mihoshi with a sled full of odds and ends and begin her own diagnostics without introducing herself.  Teala had told her Jessica was as talented as eccentric, but ultimately it was feeling her in the systems like a squirrel in a loft that moved Catrina to action.

Thani turned from one of the many consoles she was shifting between to shoot Istala a smirk. It appeared she was having the system run some brief diagnostics, using that data to calibrate the system, and also pulling up data on the ship's sensor array and calibrating that as well.

"It's only mad science if it blows up. Get it right and it's just regular genius. You're a long way from the helm, Istala. Thinking of changing your uniform to blue? We can have a lotta fun rearranging our understanding of the universe in here."

Like a squirrel was quite an accurate depiction, as Jess took to almost dashing through the jeff tubes like an erratic squirrel frenzied by one thing or another. The ship was large, small by most standards but still large. Thankfully most of its systems and redundant systems were extremely isometric and compact. Though, while most would dismiss the other half even while trying to be thorough.... Jess, was extremely stubborn about checking quite literally everything. The Isometric nature of the ship just make this a more smooth process.

With a small pause, and an equally small sigh, Jess Exited to Jeffrey tubes and made way into engineering.

Just before entering she paused for a deep breath, then proceeded in. Her initial action was to survey the faces present with, offering a smile to anyone who was looking her way. In her mind she recanted 'just another social, just another social' for bolstering her courage.
Her first target would be to move to Catrina, she had seen crew headshots when doing her homework of her fellow crew so she had an idea of who to go to.

However, reading on someone and seeing them tend to be two different things. She had read there was an obvious implant but when she saw it... obvious was almost an understatement.

Getting her knee jerk reaction out of her system when she entered the room... hopefully easily mistaken for getting her bearings, the young engineer stifled her staring as she approached.
"Catrina, please forgive my Enthusiasm."
Jessica offered what she hoped was a decent smile.

Replying to Teala: #42

Alex gives a smile in return, "Usually we would throw a toast or small party for celebrating a first. Congratulations on your first star ship mission then."

Alex shakes his head, "Well, hmm, plenty of tales, some good, some bad and some tragic. After all, we are the sum of our experiences, our upbringing and moral code. Let me see, I was raised on Earth, showed early promise in the sciences and technology. My father had impressed upon me to work and study hard to achieve success. During the later tests I had natural aptitude for biology, and felt a calling into the medical disciplines. I don't know how to describe it, but for me I wanted to absorb the fascinating literature about how our bodies are made, how the various systems work in a harmony to achieve homeostasis. The amazing thing is this process is replicated in all carbon based life-forms. Sure, some species have variations on the theme, an extra organ, or different adaptation, but all of us have to worry about living and dying. I found that with knowledge you could cure an illness, stop and reverse the process that could kill someone."

He looks at Teala with a bit of a fire, "The knowledge that we can help another person have another precious moment of life, that drives me forward to help those within reason. If I had had that knowledge in my younger years, I could have saved my friend, Steve's, life. Simple knowledge to sustain him till medical services arrived, but that is why I do it. Steve. Without knowing it, tragic events spur us to become better ourselves." He gives a slightly pained expression as the memory of Steve flashes through his mind, and his body naturally causes a tear to form. Alex clears his throat a little uncomfortably, obviously not used to opening up like that. "Sorry, I'm usually a little more controlled, but I suppose this proves I am human after all."

Moving a hand to wipe the stray tear, "Ah, hope I didn't make you uncomfortable, you wanted a tale not a complete saga from me in one sitting." Obviously redirecting, "Are you planning on celebrating your first mission? Or shall we plan something for you when we get back to the station?"

In reply to Alex Dupont (msg # 43):

Teala listened to Alex's story with interest.  He was a clearly an intelligent man, Farah wouldn't have recruited him otherwise, but it was the way he spoke of Steve that struck her the most.  What must it be like to know someone so loyal?  "Not at all, Doctor," she replied to his question, a sense of protocol preventing Teala from calling him anything else.  "I appreciate your passion in this and you honor the memory of your friend with it."

She thought for a moment, before adding.  "I'm not sure what I'll do, if anything.  I didn't even know there was such a custom.  Is there something one normally does?"

Mission 1: The USS Mihoshi

Replying to Teala: #44

Alex looks slightly shocked, "My dear, traditions and customs arise from people repeating what others have done before them. Whenever someone achieves a milestone in their life, it is a cause for celebration. When you graduate from high school we gather and celebrate, when you graduate from college or even Starfleet a ceremony is held and usually a celebration. Some students would celebrate at the completion of a semester. When you gain a license, it's a celebration. Having a birthday is cause for celebration. I hope you are picking up the trend. Life is short, and we celebrate the success of friends and associates by acknowledging these milestones and usually accompanied by food and drink. By doing so we enrich the bonds we share in the time we are together." Alex gives it a moment of thought, "We will throw you a celebration back at the station. You choose who you want to attend as it should be those who you feel comfortable with. Make the night yours to remember."

Teala's smiled faltered at all the seemingly happy events that she never had and it was hard for her not to resent how casually he suggested should.  Still, he meant well and she appreciated that he seemed to care.  It put him in very exclusive company.  "I did not have many occasions for celebration..."

"It's alright, Jessica," Catrina said, glad they were speaking face to face. "Just remember you're part of a pack, not a group of lone wolves.  Speaking of the pack, allow me introduce you to some of your teammates."

Catrina introduced Jessica to the engineers standing nearby.  Tzerak, the Saurion sytems engineer.  Naoko Kusaragi, hardware and processing systems.  Bartolomy Blatt, warp systems.  The Catian, M'Lera Rr'zah, systems software and operations.  A bit put off by Jessica's behavior, each greeted Jessica pleasantly, but warily, then looked for Catrina to continue.

"So I read your service record and have a good idea what you can do," Catrina said to Jessica.  "Tell us a bit about yourself."

Mission 1: The USS Mihoshi

Jason stood there talking to Catrina till things started to get lively. He waved to the woman before heading back to make his rounds. His first stop was the Armory and with data pad in hand, he checked every locker to make sure it was secure before moving on to the Security office where he would find his new co-workers.

"Armory is secure, ma'am," he would say and set the data pad down before the blue skinned Lt. Idrani "Anything else you need me to do?"

He had spent the trip wandering the ship and learning of its halls and finding the few others that had come along. By far, the engineer was the most interesting to talk to. Now that he had his duty, he was feeling quite a bit less lost.

Tekar Davis raised an eyebrow as Jason walked into the armory, his task of inspecting the various armaments aboard the Mihoshi to ensure everything was in working order was about a quarter of the way done.  "I do not believe I am acquainted with you, what is your posting on the Mihoshi Specialist?" Tekar asks as his eyes focused on the rank insignia on Walker's uniform.  He was certain he was familiar with all personnel onboard, and if this man was a stowaway, the Captain would have to be notified immediately.

Jason would have headed back to the security station but in the process of doing his duty to check that things were stowed away properly he was stopped by Tekar. He was just doing his normal rounds so it was surprising to suddenly find someone in the Armory. He bobbled the pad he had before neatly catching it before it fell more than a few inches.

"Sir?" His gaze flickered over the uniform a moment, surprised and showing it. "Specialist 1st class Walker. Been with the Mihoshi since it left dock for DS5 sir. Begging your pardon but I am part of the security team. Names Jason Walker." His face wrinkled up a moment in concern that someone had screwed up.

In reply to Catrina Matheson (msg # 47):

Jessica's nose scrunched up a little at the reaction she got, but quickly disregarded it and turned to the mentioned crew.

With a small nod Tzerak, Naoko, Bartolomy, and M'Lera "Well, as has been said and as is obvious, I am a fellow engineer." A glance to catrina before again adressing the other engineers. She takes in a sharp breath "I suppose to start, I will explain the reasons im here, what im best at, is I am extremely thorough. it insures that I dont get confused by something in my work stations. I make it a point, in fact. This is not my lack of confidence in others, in any of you, it is more an obsession thats served me well."

Jessica would take a very brief pause to look over reactions before continuing, "Because of this, I am very good at quickly learning and understanding anything thats not particularly new... whether its Terran or not. This also helps me quickly relate technology, if I see something new, I can catch on to other developments of it in things. Furthermore, I can see where something has been improved on."

"Hopefully, you all find me to be a valuable and helpful member of this engineering team." this last sentence was more breathed out, in nervousness, then spoken out.

Alex nods, "Quite correct. Celebrations are where you should be enjoying yourself. These are a joyous event where others share in your joy at an accomplishment. In typical fashion there is usually music, dancing, food and drink. Though cultural considerations and what a species finds as fun or entertaining is diverse, the idea is to indulge in the activity with those you share a bond or friendship."

Alex thinks for a moment, "I think the most recent celebration that I enjoyed was when I completed my schooling to become a doctor. I had some friends I made during the academy coursework. Since we all graduated the same day, we went into a group celebration at a local spot and had a good time late into the night."

"On Earth, humans are very diverse in our cultures. While a group may enjoy certain activities there have been thousands of traditions and cultures on Earth that various groups enjoy. It would be inconsiderate of me to assume because of your species that you would indulge in any practices without consulting you. I was merely giving an example that those are considerations when throwing a celebration. After all, we are supposed to enjoy the activities, not make a person uncomfortable. Is there anyone in particular who you would like to be invited? Not just with this crew, but previous assignments?"

Yes, Alex thinks to himself, this would be a celebration of a unique individual full of life and though he doubted he could do it proper justice, he would do his best.

In particular, I hope to hear of Bartolomy's thoughts on the warp core we are using.... and as I am less familiar with software systems then I would be interested in learning a little from M'Lera and Tzerak. Alex thought about it for a moment, going through a mental checklist of tasks and duties, then nods with a smile, "Yes, barring some urgent matter, I should be free and would love to see your homeworld through the wonders of the holodeck."

Alex wanted to be careful, things shared in privileged settings needed to be navigated carefully. Being a friend to any of the crew was not forbidden, and many a romance has blossomed by close quarters, but as a doctor he had the professional duty to avoid a rescuer/rescued bond that can develop. He didn't think this was a concern, but he was giving himself a mental check to verify he was above board.

He saw a young woman that had been through much, and needed to see the positive side of life. Sharing a celebration and being a friend was a good start. He genuinely hoped that she would develop healthy relationships with all the crew. Seeing as he had no prior bonds on the ship, forming a healthy friendship with Teala was normal. He had formed such workplace bonds before at other sites, leaving a trail of trusted colleagues to call upon if there was need for advice or someone to talk to.

"Let me finish up this last cabinet of stock, and then we can head over to the science department and see if I'm still scientifically inclined enough to be a helpful hand over there." He gives a friendly smile.

Getting use to a new ship was always interesting.  The rythym of the engines, the sounds of the computers, the scents of life support, the shudders of the turberlift. Each ship was different, each ship had its personality if you looked for it.

There would be plenty of time to get to konw the ship, right now he needed to find Teala to discuss the mission at hand.

Getting on the systen he sent the message:

"Lt. Commander Teala, I am Lt. Commander Decker Geary, I would like to meet with you at your earliest convenience so that I may introduce myself to you."

[Mess Hall, post-Science Department]

Once finished with setting up initial diagnostics running to prepare for the calibration phase, Lt Cmdr Elliaph plopped down into a seat in the officers' mess with a tray of something that looked like translucent cylinders, sliced to a centimeter or so, over some kind of pink pasta with a spicy-smelling sauce. The utensil replicated to eat it with was a long and thin two-pronged fork, along with a short set of tongs. Thani was grinning down at her plate with an upturned eyebrow, and began working out how she was expected to use the utensils on the food she'd gotten. Apparently she didn't already know.

It had been a long first day.  Once everything had settled down and the immediate threats had been dealt with, Deckar finished up his shift on the bridge. "Ensign, bring me some Rigelian Coffee, please."

Pressing the the button for the ship's intercoms, "Members of the Mihoshi, I was once told that it wasn't a crew until you passed your first crisis together, well here we are.  I may have missed the send off of the Mihoshi, she is still my ship as she is yours.  In honor of Zefram Cochrane who started us all on this journey, I give you this."

"Computer, play 1969 Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf over the intercom."
