STARDATE 48240.55 - Party

Alex sent out a crew-wide communication.

You are cordially invited to celebrate a culmination of the life and achievements of Lt. Cmdr Teala, Attache to Farah Greene.

Time & Location: 48240.55 5:00 pm, Deep Space 5 at the 'The Broken Anchor'.

Please RSVP

Alex had arrived early to meet with the proprietor, a mister Garrett Volkov.

With a smile to the man. "Hello mister Volkov, I am Doctor Dupont, we communicated earlier about the gathering. I am expecting approximately (guestimate based upon RSVPs and a buffer number for any unexpected arrivals). Thank you for the use of your facilities. It came recommended by Captain Greene." Alex was not usually given to set up social events, but Teala had made an impact.

He had also asked their self-designated patroness of parties and social events to assist in whatever fashion she felt appropriate, Diplomat Katherine Seward.

OOC: Sorry about the delay all, but there we go. Our official kick-off for Teala!

"Dah, good to meet you Doctor Dupont, please call me Garrett. Mister Volkov is my father," Garrett said, a slight accent still peppering his words as he offered his hand to the man with a grin. "It is not a problem. Happy to supply a location for you. As you can see, there is room. I am going to close up about twenty minutes before 5 so I can clean up. Can I get you something to drink while you wait?"

Garrett placed some glasses on the bar. "Also can I expect Farah to come? I know she likes her tea so I can at least have that prepaired for her if she does." He tried not to be too eager about that question. Most likely it was a lost cause on that. "Also, if you could give me a heads up on the races, I can at least have things out that might appease their palates."

"I will wait until the party starts to enjoy refreshments. A proper host should make sure things go smoothly before enjoying the party as well," Alex replied.

With a nod. "I would expect the captain to arrive unless some matter of importance calls her away. This party is for a special member of her crew. The young lady has never had a party in her entire life. I expect she will be both overwhelmed, emotional, and happy in some mixture. Best to be surrounded by friends who care about you to show appreciation. I'm expecting the usual federation races, Andorian, Vulcan, Ardana - Trog, Orion, etc." (Alex will provide the known races of the ships' crew)

STARDATE 48240.55 - Party

H'Raal was normally not one for social functions.  Even when he'd been onboard the Osler, as Operations Chief, where little of his work was hands-on and more about making sure the Operations crews were where they needed to be and determining priorities for action, he tended to hold back from those that were held.

But...at the same time, he realized that this was not your typical situation.  The ship had launched, and he needed to find some time to introduce himself to at least the seniors staff of Cadmus.  He could decline to attend, but if he did, then the only chances for an introduction would be either A: another event similar to this one, or B: at a mission briefing.

And when you put it in those terms, it was clear that he should go.  If the first, then why pick one event over another?  If the latter, having to introduce himself at the same time as a mission briefing could complicate matters...unnecessarily.

So it was that H'Raal found himself heading to the Broken Anchor for this party.  For someone he did not know (at least, not yet), to make himself known.

...there was something about this scenario, but H'Raal did not know how to state it.

Arriving at the Anchor, he noted that some people were already here.  He took a seat at the bar and waited for others to approach.

The Broken Anchor was decked out in a vaguely naval theme, with hints of greek architecture throughout the room.  She hadn't been able to find much on Taela's family sadly so she hadn't focused on that aspect of Orion culture, instead choosing to focus on the crew of the Mihoshi with hints of each and their relationship with Taela throughout the room.  Kate hadn't specified a dress code when sending out the invitations but chose to dress conservatively showing as little skin as possible in hopes that it would help Taela feel less conscious of her own clothing limitations due to the extensive implants the Orion had.

His head was about to explode. Since the last mission, Bart has been studying Quantum Mechanics.  He had just finished Sarok's Treaties on the subject and was about to pick up Cabot's "Theories of Quantum Mechanics and the Relationship to String Theory." but he needed a break.  So he headed to the party.

Dressed in neatly pressed civilian clothes, he walked in to the sparsely populated room, looking around he had thought he had made a mistake. Checking the invite again, he realized that without meaning to, he was early as was his custom.  He gave a slight wave to the few people he recognized, like Ms. Seward and Dr. Dupont and made his way to the bar.

Bart ordered a beer.  Waiting for the drink to come, he looked over at the catian, "Hi, I don't think we've met.  I'm Bart."  He said extending his hand.

H'Raal noted the human who approached the bar, and ordered a drink from the keeper.  Said human then offered his hand to him.  "H'Raal.  No, I don't think we've met, either."  He shook the man's hand.  "You're part of this Task Force, too?"  Lots of humans so far, he noted to himself, but then again, the denizens of Earth seemed to have a natural proclivity to join Starfleet.

Garrett laughed at Alex's words. "Dah, its like that. My mother was always waiting on the rest before she started in. Still, let me know what you want when you are ready." His expression changed a moment and he nodded at the mention of Farah. "She works hard," he said neutrally. "Excuse me. Some of your party goers are here and I should be paying attention."

He moved down the bar with a smile. "Welcome to the Anchor," he said to H'Raal with a smile but no teeth showing. "What refreshment can I get for you? Warm milk? Catnip tea?" He grinned and winked to let H'Raal  know he was joking. "Or something you would actually like?" He waited for the Catian's response before nodding to Bart and getting him the beer he wanted.

STARDATE 48240.55 - Party

Upon arriving and seeing the decorations, Naoko felt vaguely disappointed it wasn't a costume party.  She hadn't gone to one since Academy and always had fun.  Still, the party wasn't about her.  Naoko didn't know all the details, it wasn't her business, but Alex had wanted to throw a party for Teala and that was good enough for her.

Dressed in simple black slacks and a green blouse, Naoko had sought a fashionable look that didn't draw too much attention.  Looking for the host, she found Alex, but also saw Bart.  They hadn't really socialized since his promotion and she wasn't sure if he was still "Bart" or "Chief" now.  Only one way to find out as she approached and waved to him.  "Hi..."

Jason walked in a few minutes after Naoko did and glanced around at the decorations. He wore a plaid button up shirt, jeans and hiking boots as if he had come from a long walk. The old wooden anchor hanging from the wall had him curious enough to walk over to look at it. He was positive it was real and really old. Turning, he froze at seeing Naoko there and then walked around her to the opposite side of the bar and sat down to wait for the bartender.

The dark haired man came over and he nodded to him. "Couple of double shots of Walker if you have any, on ice." The glass was set down before him after a moment and he picked it up, swirling the amber liquid around before taking a sip. Not too many where here now and he nodded to the Doctor.

In reply to Garrett Volkov (msg # 9):

"Can you make Vulcan spice tea?"  He asked the tender when approached about a drink of his choice.  "And make sure the glass you put it in is big enough that you can park a runabout in there in case of emergency."  H'Raal knew that events like this were normally ones for other drinks - like Andorian ale, a particular favorite - but he wanted to make a good impression with the team first, and the Vulcan drink was something he could drink for as long as he liked.

In reply to Bartolomy Blatt:

The Caitian then turned to the man he'd originally been talking to.  "Cadmus.  If you're part of that, then it looks like I am joining you," he informed Bart.  "For tonight and a lot more nights to come."

If only person came to the party, M'Lera would be it though she was more than pleased to see she wasn't.  Most didn't know Teala's story and it wasn't M'Lera's to tell.  She just hoped it had the intended effect when Alex told her he was hosting it.  The guest of honor had yet to arrive, but Alex was there, so that seemed a logical place to start.  She wore a sapphire blue skater dress, but left her legs and feet bare as was the Catian norm.  "Good evening, Doctor," she said as she approached.  "It seems your party is starting well.  When will Teala arrive?"

Alex could only nod. He was expecting to leave to grab the guest of honor. Then the new officer of the crew arrived and what Garret said made him blanch. He had thought humans knew better than to insult another species over similarities to animals on Earth. Wars over misunderstandings had been caused for cases of honor, pride, and cultural heritage. Heck, one species thought public eating was tantamount to sex in public. He doubted Garr meant any insult, perhaps just a bit of humor, but humanity had struggled to overcome stereotypes based on sex or race. Hopefully, H'Raal wouldn't take afront. It was the last thing Farah needed with her new second officer.

Slightly shaking his head, he smiles at the bright young Catian that has given him joy and more help in such a short period of time. "M'Lera, glad you could make it. I was about to get our guest of honor. I wanted to make sure things were ready before I sprung this surprise," Alex said easily.

Though she had other plans later in the evening, Istala wasn't one to pass up a party.  A quick note to Vanna to meet her there and she went off to the Promenade Deck in an off-the-shoulder black mini-dress and strap shoes that let everyone see her spots.  "Little black dresses", as Farah had called them, never went out of style.  Arriving, she saw the Broken Anchor and its interesting design.  She was sure she had been down here before.  How had she missed this, she wondered, then reminded herself why she might have.  That was the past.

Glancing around, she saw those who had arrived before her, nearly all familiar faces when she caught sight of the two Catians.  Farah had told her a new second officer was taking Malko's place, H'Raal, and Farah calling H'Rall a "he" ruled out the female.  Best to make introductions in an informal setting as she moved to where he was chatting with Bart.  After patiently waiting for the two to finish their conversation, she said, "Excuse me, Lt. Cmdr H'Raal?  I'm Lt. Istala Res.  I get the Mihoshi where she needs to go.  Captain Greene said you were coming and I wanted to greet you."

In reply to Istala Res (msg # 16):

In contrast to Istala, and some of the others, who had come to the celebration in off-duty attire, H'Raal was dressed in his Starfleet uniform.  Oh, that wasn't to say that he didn't have clothes like they did, that all his closet had were copies of the same thing he was wearing now, but he figured that you couldn't go wrong with the uniform for making a first impression and attending a party.  The three pips signifying his rank were on the opposite side from the one she'd approached him on, and the task force already had one Commander attached to it, one not him, so the mistake in rank was an easy one.  No matter.

"Chief," he told the Trill (he had made out the spots). "It's Chief H'Raal.  About the only time I can stand someone actually using my rank is for promotions or on official reports, and this is hardly either.  It sounds like we're not a big crew, either, so standing on ceremony when it's not necessary is, well, just that."  The Caitian carefully looked her over.  "You don't look like an engineer...were you Ship Operations?"  He named a third track available to Operations personnel at the Academy.

"Could I get some sugar-cane shochu?" she then said to Garrett's request, making note to pace herself.  Good shochu had a way of sneaking up and clocking its victim in the back of the head and that was the last thing she needed.  Once she got her drink, she nursed it until Bart acknowledged her.

Thani was uncertain about the function of parties. It seemed a quaint custom ritual to show up and consume food around others. But then there was food consumption at the movie night. Thani was Beginning to suspect humans made any excuse to gather and eat together.

She arrived in what most would consider a relaxed outfit. Loose silk shirt and pants that would like yoga pants, comfortable shoes.

Looking around she saw some new faces and some familiar ones. Luckily she had plenty of time to scan the room before finding an unoccupied location near the bar to obverse the comings and goings of the attendees.

Deckar walked into The Broken Anchor wearing a form fitting shirt, roayl purple with a mandarian collar.  His pants were a classic straight leg cut, in a shade of steel grey with matching wingtip shoes.  He spotted the catian talking with Istala, so he walked over to them.  "Hello Istala, you look wonderful tonight." Turning to the cation he said in broken catian, "You must be Commander H'Raal.  Welcome, I'm Commander Deckar Geary."  It was his custom to see how the other person preferred to be greeted, wether with the human custom of a handshake or some other form of greeting.

"When I'm not designing software that will destroy the ship?" Naoko replied with a half smile.  Enough time - and knowing who the true culprit was - had eased her sense of guilt into something simply more self effacing, if in a black humor sort of way.  She shrugged.  "I like to train in my family's sword style, which sometimes means a holodeck session as a feudal samurai.  It's a good workout and let's me blow off some tension.  If you ever feel like storming the castle, let me know.  Otherwise, I like things that get me out of my head.  I spend too much time in there."

Taking a sip of the shochu, she sighed.  It was fine, but replicators had their limits.  Recipe "compression" sometimes trimmed out those bits that most never noticed.  Most.  "Sometimes I wish it weren't against regulations to set up a distillery."

STARDATE 48240.55 - Party

In reply to Decker Geary (msg # 29):

"Your Caitian needs a little work," H'Raal replied to Geary as he introduced himself.  "And you're missing a piece of anatomy needed for tone, but I appreciate you crash-course learning my language enough to say hello to me in it."  The smile that came with the reply was slow, but genuine.  He raised the hand not holding the spice tea cup, all the fingers together, half a step away from the famed Vulcan hand sign.  "Greetings, Commander Geary.  I hope we can work well together in the days to come."

He then turned back to Istala.  "Assume I'll say hello to anyone from Operations that comes to the party tonight.  If you run into anyone who doesn't, just let them know that I'd like to have that meeting after we leave dock, but before we hit warp.  Won't be long, just a few minutes."

In reply to H'Raal (msg # 38):

"Give me another month and I will have the fundamentals down and be familiar with the more casual aspects of you language."  He gave the catian a little smile. "My first position was as a linguistic officer."

"I didn't mean to interrupt, I just wanted to say hello." He turned to leave and theen he looked at Istala, "Oh Istala, at some point I'd like to challenge you to a fighter race through the Orion asteroid field."

"I haven't seen anyone else yet, but it's pretty early," Istala said.  Vanna hadn't arrived yet, but hopefully she would.  "Worst case, I'll bang on a few doors and let them know."  Catching sight of Kate, Istala nodded in her direction.  "Katherine Seward used to be in Operations on the Endeavour before retiring to join the Diplomatic core with wife, Maria."

Hearing Geary's challenge, Istala turned with a wide smile.  Vanna was usually the only one willing to race her and she jumped at the chance for new competition.  "You're on, sir!" Then she looked at H'Raal.  "You're welcome to try your skills too, sir."

"It's a trap, sir," Naoko said to H'Raal in response to Istala's offer, teasing the Trill while motioning to Garrett to give her another.  "She can fly the pants off anything."  Realizing she hadn't made proper introductions to the new Operations Chief, she extended a hand.  "Lt. Naoko Kusaragi.  I work under Chief Blatt in Engineering."

"The party seems to be going well," Maria said to Kate. "A wonderful job, but I expect no less from you."  Then she noticed Istala saying something while glancing their way.  Rather, Kate's way.  "I believe Lt. Res is speaking about you to the new Operations Chief.  You should go make introductions, dear."

Kate smiled and leaned into Maria for a light kiss before making her way over to Istala and H'Raal. "Did I hear my name mentioned?" she asks jokingly as she looked at Istala. "Given everything that happened I feel its hardly as if I had a real choice Istala."

Her eyes turned to the Caitian and a faint smile appeared as she gave a polite nod to him. "You must be H'Raal, Welcome to Cadmus, I'm Kate and as Istala just aid, I used to work in Operations before my retirement." She offered out a hand politely for a shake.

"Not nearly as often as I'd like," Farah sighed.  "As much as of a mess the Endeavour was, I had a lot more free time."  She looked away for a moment, as if in remembrance.  "Simpler days when all I had to worry about was the ship fitting together the right way.  Now... Now it's more work than I could have imagined."

With it getting a bit busier now, he gladly set down another drink for Naoko though his gaze was flickering around to each individual a moment, sometimes resting for far longer than necessary on them. Mostly though it was very few that drew his attention. On the other hand it was mostly a happy bunch in the room which made him happy. Garrett had caught the faint emotion coming from Farah and his gaze slipped over to her briefly, smiling.

Then he noticed the new arrivals and smiled, motioning for them to come in and take a seat where ever they wanted. "Anyone else needing a refresh on their drink?" He then turned his attention to H'Raal, "That tea need a warm up, sir?"

STARDATE 48240.55 - Party

If it weren't for her green skin, people might have seen the shade of Teala's blush as she entered.  It was her first time wearing any sort of evening dress and it took more than a little encouragement from her Captain and friend who made sure she looked good, though coordinating against green skin and red hair made it more of a challenge than she could have imagined.  Teala wore a long-sleeved, full-length dress in a shade of midnight blue with matching gloves and closed shoes.  Perhaps more striking was the way she had her hand slipped through Alex's arm, the doctor clearly escorting her.

OOC: Imagine a midnight blue version of this:

Jason almost ran into Maria and Kate by accident and came to a stop before he did. A faint smile was offered, a nod and then he stepped to the side for them. "Sorry ma'ams," he murmured and waited for them to pass by before he exited the bar only to have the good Doc and Teala arrive. "Ma'am, may I say you look lovely? Doc." There was a little mirth but not a lot. And he waited for them before leaving only to come to a stop and try and figure out where he was trying to go.

STARDATE 48240.55 - Party

In reply to Decker Geary (msg # 39):

Well!  This was quite the surprise.  Granted, he had wanted to make introductions by coming to the party, but he didn't think he'd get this many all at once!

He handled the First Officer for starters. "You were?  Well, then minus the fact that you're missing a few anatomical bits, I think your prediction should come true in no time at all." Then, the approaches started happening.  First the girl from Engineering, then an...ex-Operations, now Diplo-Core...alright, maybe it wasn't as many people as it had seemed in the first place.

"It's nice to meet all of you."
To the engineering girl, first.  "I met your boss.  I'm not sure how often we'll get to work together, but it's good to meet you."

Then the Diplomatic envoy. "Chief H'Raal, please.  About the only time I can stand being called 'Commander' is on a report or for some official ceremony."  The Caitian turned to the rest of the crowd that had gathered around him.  "That goes for the rest of you, as well."  He decided to pull a little Caitian trick.  "It's a shame I've only got two hands..."  He then looped his tail around and used it to shake her hand - since his others were occupied with the First Officer and the Engineering girl.  (He would have their names remembered soon enough.)  "...so I guess this will have to do."

When the barkeep came back, he put the tip of his tail up to his glass. "Right about there, my good man." Not every Caitian had the degree of dexterity that he did with their tails.  Then, he turned back to Istala, who had offered to let him compete in a race between herself, and the First Officer. "Oh, I suppose I can join in, even if only to get beaten...make it interesting.  Make the race with a trio of Danubes...and each of us gets two days before the race to tune them up and make them run." He presented the tail to Istala. "Deal?"

"Evening Walker," Alex says with a smile. The evening was all set. Leaning in to whisper to Teala.

Not one for public speaking, Alex cleared his throat before speaking up. "Comrades, the crew of the Mihoshi and Cadmus, thank you all for coming to celebrate the life and accomplishments of Ms. Teala, all her birthdays, graduation from the academy and being a role model for everyone on overcoming challenges and still bringing joy to the lives of those around you! This is an informal engagement, but I would encourage everyone to stand up and let Teala know how she has impacted your life. Remember, this is her first party, so feel free to make up for all that lost time tonight!"

He says with a big smile to the lovely green lady on his arm.

"For me?" Teala asked Alex, his announcement clearly taking her by surprise. She stared at him a moment, blinking away the surprise for a mixture of embarrassment and happiness that only seemed to grow as people came to her to wish her well.  "T-Thank you, Cmdr Geary," she said to Deckar, touched by his gesture, then to anyone who did.  "Thank you all."

Seeing Teala arrive, Istala began to move to participate in the celebration, but added to H'Raal, "But if you can get her to sign off on it, I'll figure something out."

Garrett looked around, his eyes pausing a moment on Farah and then gave a nod to H'Raal. "Right you are, Chief." He actually prepared a fresh cup for the Catian. Then he looked up at the commotion and smiled. "Ah, the star has arrived. Anyone still without a drink?" If no one answered he would go back to where Farah and Thani were sitting and smile. "So any idea of what the star of the party might like to drink?"

He nodded to Farah and gave a wink to her and Thani before not only making another Mai Tai for Thani but a strawberry daiquiri complete with umbrella and a strawberry hanging from the rim of the glass. He set both drinks down before Thani and Farah. When she, Farah, picked up it up, his gaze followed her towards where she walked up to Teala and he briefly made a face. "Maybe I should have made a different flavor."

Garrett turned to Thani and smiled. "So how do you like the taste of that?"
