The USS Mihoshi: Security

Before heading to the security complex after her first shift on the bridge, Nynev Idrani stopped by the industrial replicators.  Entering her security credentials, she ordered the replication of a number of primitive weapons.  Each one was a hand to hand combat tool still in use in the culture of a member of the security staff--giving first priority to weapons in which the staff member was listed as proficient, and second to weapons that held cultural connotations of honor and duty.  In selecting the weapons, Nynev did a basic check on the traditions associated with the weapon so as to avoid simple faux pas like displaying a _verat arzat_ unsheathed.   (Use of the _verat arzat_ was given such grave severity that drawing the weapon obligated the one who drew it to let it taste blood.)  She also replicated banners--one of the United Federation of Planets.  Another for each member of her staff--either that of a warrior society they belonged to, or a member nation, or an ancestral region.

The petite, platinum haired girl was on a chair, hanging up the last of the banners.  The weapons were arranged on the walls, in proper positions but also where they could be snagged for use by those authorized to disable the magnets.

One antenna turned to face the security man as he entered.  The Andorian girl was small, sleek, and feminine.  From behind she looked more like a young dispatch secretary than a security chief.  She turned and hopped down.  Her smile was bright and youthful, but her stance and poise where strong and professional.  "You must be Jason Walker.  Good to meet you, Specialist Walker."

Jason paused to look at all the weapons and he started to take a step forwards before stopping to turn his attention to Nynev. He gave a nod. "Thank you, ma'am. It's nice to have more security 'round besides me. Took to talkin' to the engineer when I wasn't doing my rounds."

He looked over the weapons again, admiration in his eyes. "I see you have collected quite a few weapons." His eyes paused on a Klingon bat'leth then he turned back with a smile. "I came to report to you and find out what my duties would be while under your command. I met Lt. Davis in the armory, also. I guess he wasn't aware of my inclusion."

"Not really my collection," the petite Andorian replied.  "I think of two weapons as mine, the ushan'tor on my hip and a sword that I left back home.  Both are hand crafted.  These," she indicated the weapons on the walls, "I just put together with the industrial replicator, but I assure you that the designs are the finest quality a replicator can produce.  They're all fully combat worthy.  If you need one, the stud above the bracket releases the magnet.

"Hand to hand combat is not as vital to warfare as it was in times before firearms and phasers, but it's still crucial that we not allow the skill to lapse--especially now that we have seen it's effectiveness against the Borg.

"More importantly, the traditions associated with most of these weapons go far back in each of our cultural histories.  These weapons are symbols of the strength and pride of our peoples.  Some bare spiritual significance as well.  The bat'leth, you may know, was first designed by Khaless at the climax of a spiritual journey to an active volcano.  The legend states that he cast a braid of his hair into the volcano, where it became coated in liquefied minerals before an updraft bore it back up from the volcano.  It landed in the shape we know today and cooled into a combat ready weapon.

"I want every person on this team, upon entering this chamber, to feel connected to tens of thousands of years of pride, honor, and strength."

He gave a steady stare at his commanding officer. "Considering I do have my own weapons, the histories are well known, ma'am," still deferential and polite. "As for my qualifications, Krav Maga, Aikido and Capoeira are the ones I am most familiar with for hand to hand. If you wish to test my knowledge out I can be available to you."

Jason hadn't really had much experience with Andorians yet so this was new and Idrani was not what he expected at all. He tried to keep his thoughts to himself along with his expression not changing. "I am pretty flexible and have been known to pick up things very quickly. My instructors called me a 'natural' for what that's worth. What will be my duties while serving under you, ma'am?"

Nynev blinked.  She knew many fellow security people considered her bellicose attitude and cute, piping voice to be unprofessional.  She might need to prove herself in combat before this man took her seriously, but she wasn't about to apologize for who she was--especially not for her small stature.

Instead the little Andorian lead Jason to a section of wall and indicated one of the banners she'd replicated.  "Krav Maga, a military martial arts style developed by the Hebrew people of Israel I believe.  I requested appropriate heraldry from your school when I found your record in preparation for this assignment."

Then she turned to face him fully.  "I would be honored for a chance to train with you.  As to your duties, Specialist Walker, you are needed primarily for face to face security.  You will be on active duty on first shift to protect the ship, monitoring on board security systems and responding where needed.  As I will be on the bridge operating weapons systems on that shift, you will have the authority of a department head during that period.  Don't hesitate to call or text me, but there will be situations--usually involving torpedo fire--where security decisions normally requiring my authorization will fall upon your shoulders.

"Other shifts you will be on call.  You will also be called upon to provide security on away missions."

He had little opinion of anything at this point in time, the young man remained polite and deferential to Lt. Idrani though, never changing the fact that he listened attentively and didn't assert anything unless asked to do so.

Jason followed, gaze moving over the banner. He nodded then turned his attention to her. "Of course ma'am. I can be found after shift in the holodeck at least 3 days out of a week. Sometimes more." He continued to nod with a serious look on his face. This was doable for him.

"Yes ma'am. I understand. Its been a pretty quiet trip to DS5 and unless there's some bit o'trouble along the way to where ever we are going, doubt we'll get much action. You can count on me, ma'am. Is there anything else I should know ma'am?" He wanted to make sure he had all the information before he left. At least then he could plan things better now.

Nynev nodded. "That covers it, Specialist Walker.  It was good to meet you. "
