The World as We Know It

The history of the world is altered from the world of the Marvel universe. Beginning in the 19th Century, mutants became part of society. Marginalized at first but still citizens. Not just in entertainment and carnivals, mutants worked in logging, mining, fishing, medicine, and science. Anywhere a mutant had a unique ability that allowed the job to get done better, safer or faster, America was quick to adopt and adapt.

Mutants received much greater acceptance when a Union soldier who was a mutant stopped an assassination plot to kill President Lincoln. That changed the way people perceived the mutants among them.

Many cities had Freaktowns (now officially called Mutant Districts) and Florida became a haven for retired mutants. Their popularity in entertainment and obvious benefits to society were accepted first in the English speaking world and later parts of Europe and including Russia.

By WWII mutants were becoming integrated into all areas including the military. The First Special Services Force a joint Canadian/American unit included men of all races, creeds, and ethnicities, including mutants.

This changed World history in many ways, the Bolshevik revolution failed in Russia in part due to mutants working for the Czar. Germany still lost WWII. There are two official Chinese governments an Imperial China and a Nationalist China. The UN intervention in Korea was successful. However, America was bogged down in military actions in Southeast Asia from the Nineteen Fifties until the Eighties.

Technology has advanced farther than in our time line. Gravity effect cars, aircraft, and airships are common. While 'flying cars' are a toy for the ultra-rich, and rarely government and the military, Stark, Tucker and Chevrolet all offer repulsor or gravity effect 'hover cars'. Vehicles with round tires are becoming a thing of the past. Most freight in the world and especially America travels in vast airships the size of the largest ocean tankers.

There are bases on the Moon and Mars. Electronics and mechanics are all more advanced and most of the world's manufacturing is in America. Due to political instability, the East Asian Miracle never happened and industry remained in the West. This had the dual effect of making America both more conservative due to steady growth and along with Mars, Moon and asteroid colonies being established, the Frontier spirit/myth is still alive and well.

Steve Rogers and Bucky served with the Devil's Brigade as experimental enhanced soldiers. Dr. Erskine was successful in creating a number of 'enhanced soldiers'. The limiting factor was energy, and the right subject. The process is dangerous to the human psyche and only the most stable, dedicated, and well-balanced individuals are suitable for the process.

SHIELD has avoided using mutants from the founding of the agency in WWII. Howard Stark provided SHIELD with technological tools to even the playing field with enhance individuals. His son Tony Stark has continued that tradition. If the secretive agency is working on its own enhanced capabilities, nobody is talking.

The unit is still a joint venture and still includes mutants including a few women. If you can pass the rigorous selection process you may be included.
