Alban is a rock gnome wizard. He is also a guild artisan specializing in alchemy and apothecary crafting and knows some metalsmithing and carpentry in a pinch .  He is also a tinker and can help mend and repair gear using magic.  He will have a cabin and workshop built within the next couple of days and be open for business soon.

He is also interested in trading spells and copying spellbooks with anyone if they are interested.  Eventually, he will craft magic items once he has reached higher levels.

Alban didn't notice Boneclaw's wagon when he arrived in town.  So, either we can combine our efforts making alchemy, healing, and herbalism goods or with the GM's permission Alban could change his guild specialty to a different specialization.

We seem to need a cook/butcher/tanner to make food for the all the animals and pelts being collected while out on patrol.

I didn't have the gold (and still don't) to pay for the lifestyle expenses for making potions, unfortunately :(

Actually, I did take two unrelated long rests between jobs, so I suppose I could have created potions at those times... One of them I did mention making potions, but didn't succeed on the checks.

How much XP is one granted for crafting (basic healing potions and/or in general)?

So I wanna craft a little hat, a feather cap, for Chloe and according to the crafting rules the raw materials cost 1/10 of the crafted item's value but ...

How much exactly would the price of that be?!
https://static.zerochan.net/Tr...one.full.2350399.jpg
This is what I have in mind. And yes, Tressa from Octopath Traveler is the inspiration for Chloe. Your entire life has been a lie, I know. I can't get around picturing her as my character so I want that feather cap I'm still missing.

Next question, how exactly are lifestyle expenses handled again if in-game time is measured for each player individually? Do I just decide when a day has passed for me?

And what was the final model for trade? Something something Xanathar's Guide to Everything is all I vaguely remember but I think we had agreed to make the persuasion skill a part of the trade mechanic.

In reply to Chloe Nellington (msg # 19):

Chloe, your traveler's clothes came with a sturdy hood or and cloak. If you wish, you can simply substitute the hood for a hat. If you really just want to craft it, we'll set it at 5sp.

You spend the lifestyle expenses when you take a long rest. While you're adventuring, we'll tell you how much time passes, but in town, you must simply make sure to rest after every 2 downtime units spent, or make a save to avoid exhaustion. If you take a quest that takes 8 hours (like a patrol) you only have time for one downtime unit before you need to rest. You can chill in town without spending downtime units or paying to rest for as long as you want.

Prices for magic items and items that aren't in the PHB are determined by us, and persuasion when buying or selling with an NPC applies as follows: Roll persuasion vs. NPC persuasion. If one beats the other by 5 or more, they get a favorable price (+\- 20%) If one rolls a natural 1, they lose, unless the other rolls a nat 1 as well. If neither beats the other by at least 5, the regular price is charged.

Jessop has a pretty good persuade score (not as high as yours, but he is a professional merchant himself, so its better than a random off the street.) We could have a random number of NPC customers enter the tavern to buy drinks, each time you take a long rest, if you'd like to roleplay the interactions with them. Most of them would likely have lower persuade scores than Jessop. We prefer players to sell to each other, but since wine isn't as profitable as magic items, and players don't have as much incentive to buy it, we'll make sure you get a steady supply of customers. Just please be patient if we can't always come up with interesting ones all the time.

If you don't want to roleplay them, we could just tell you how many rolls to make, and roll our Npcs against them,

[Downtime] Between Jobs

Roleplaying each individual customer sounds tiresome for everyone involved. Not to mention I have 199 gallons of wine (currently) and that's like 199 different NPCs assuming each of them gets a single drink. That's insane.

I propose we just make the NPCs faceless and I "skip weeks" by making seven long rests in a row (aka pay the appropriate lifestyle expenses times seven) and then we make seven rolls in a row to determine the outcome of the week.

Are you sure you don't like any variation of my proposed business mechanic? It's not actually hard - it's just one straightforward calculation and we just need to agree on the variables. You critiqued that the number of NPCs in town is intentionally vague and I get that but we can still set a number of people interested.

((7*10)/1)*0.5 divided by 20

This calculation simply assumes that there are 10 people in the vicinity who frequent the tavern once every two days. The result is 1.75 and that number doesn't have to ever be recalculated unless we change a variable like the selling price. With this formula Chloe could sell 7 to 41 gallons of wine per week (average of 18). This sits better with me than including the arbitrary persuasion score of a customer which implies haggling and ... there is no haggling here.

This would be 3 gold and 6 silver income per week (on average) without including the lifestyle expenses so maybe we increase the number of interested customers from 10 to something better ...

Come on, man. I know you want it too. :D

Okay, how about 3d20+10 customers every two days, plus a comfortable lifestyle (if your property qualifies, which it should.) Keep track of your long rests, and after every 7, make the roll and post the result in this thread. Just put a horseshoe over the door, in case you roll three 1's.

I like the idea of randomizing the number of customers but I have no idea how to integrate that into a week-based formula. It would make things very complicated. We have three options now:
  • Throw out my formula and substitute it for 3d10+10 costumers every two days. This makes every variable, including Chloe's charisma score, completely pointless.
  • Every seven days, I roll 3d10+10 four times, divide the fourth result by 2 in order to not get the result for eight days, then I sum them up and replace the (7*10) in the original formula with the new outcome.
  • We randomize the weekly costumers every 7 days instead of every 2 days.

By the way, according to the thread "Prices for Jessop's Shop and Erret's Construction" my capacity is 3. With two people in the dwelling, that's one person below capacity and that means the lifestyle increases by +1 from poor to modest.

I'm beginning to think rather than roll a random number to determine how many customers you have per week, we might as well just roll to see how many gallons you sell per day. So every time you take a long rest you roll say, 3d10, and you sell that many gallons, at 2sp each (in fact, since no one else in town is selling wine, go ahead and sell it for 3sp a gallon). That should average you a lot more than 3.6 gold a week, while providing the possibility of some very good weeks.

As for the lifestyle, I forgot you had two rooms and not 3. Also, since you're not actually spending downtime to run the place, I think it would provide a modest lifestyle, anyway.

Well, normally it would be impossible under our rules to make a profit buying and reselling stuff, but if you buy in bulk, it makes sense you can get it for less, and if no one else is selling what your offering, you can also charge more.

When you need more, you can talk to Smith. He can contact Alemekia and have anything delivered in a week. If you wish to haggle, the seller would want to haggle with you in person, you just need to mention how much you want. Price will be based on 1/2 the base price of the wine you are buying, with the same rule for haggling I mentioned before, if you choose to do so. Common wine is available by the barrel, and fine wine is available in quantities of 20 bottles and can be sold for up to 16gp a bottle as long you have no competition, though it will sell in smaller quantities than the common wine, obviously. Make sure you buy enough at a time though, as it costs an additional 10gp transport fee per shipment.

Note that none of this uses your downtime. I recommend saving up 45 downtime units and 225gp to learn proficiency in "wine press". Cutting out the middleman will reduce your overhead by over 80%.

How many rooms do you need in the mage's tower? Is wood construction okay? There isn't a local source of stone, and importing it would be very expensive. Basically, if it's made of wood, use the same prices as if you were building a house, but stairs on each floor (except the top, unless you want roof access) would cost 25gp. Smith will front the money if you agree to pay 20% of your future income for each job you do until its done. If Eithan agrees, it could be 10% from each of your incomes, instead.

As Santio waited to be approved/allocated to some local patrols,  or for work to be posted on the Job Boards, he practiced and trained.

As the days and weeks went by,  those of Smith's Gambit  could often see Santio practicing his kata at various locations around the outskirts of town.
They ranged from the slowform yoga exercises, to fast paced combat forms ... both utilised both weapons, and unarmed techniques.
Recently, Santio had been practising his forms with longsword, moreso than the quarterstaff that he'd previously worked solely with.

Re: [Downtime] Between Jobs

One day, as Tidelan wandered the town, awaiting the chance to meet with Smith over some personal matters, he noticed his friend Santio training nearby...

There was a truth to the Common phrase "Distance makes the heart grow fonder" yet there was also a truth to the opposite. It was easy to grow apart. Tidelan didn't have the words in this language to express this, but still he had motivation to approach Santio in between a set of reps he was performing.

"Greetings, friend Santio. Your acts here look good, to my eyes. I am here to speak, though. You and I are 'friends', yes? But, I know it is true that the Heart of men is small and weak. So, I desire us to know the other more good. Do you desire the same?"

The man's intonation and timing for words were awful, but that much was the usual. He had to construct sentences as he went, since he wasn't truly fluent in this language.

Nevertheless, he seemed to be insisting that the two get to know each other better, in whatever form Santio chose, since otherwise there was a risk that their friendship could fade away.

Though he hadn't spoken it, Tidelan was also interested in the quiet man, specifically because of how little he spoke. The genasi had the history to know better than to push for information that another did not want to share, but he was hoping that Santio, even without opening up more than he was comfortable with, would have some willingness and inspiration on ways to become closer with Tidelan.

Re: [Downtime] Between Jobs

As Santio saw the blue man approaching, he slowed his exercises to a halt, and was standing politely waiting when Tidelan arrived.
He listened to the man, curiously.   To be sure, he felt the two had developed some working manner … and a positive one … but he wasn’t sure if they were ‘friends’ yet.   Then again, maybe in Tidelan’s mind they were.

Santio was a quiet man, reserved.  And wasn’t sure what to say to this proposal.   So he said, “Ah, sure.     What would you like to do?

Tidelan might remember that Santio enjoyed hearing about the gods, and their effect on people’s lives.   Or notice that he was a man who enjoyed martial training.   He might remember that Santio enjoyed playing the tactical board game of Dragonchess,  and playing his flute.   He had also shown some skill in woodcarving.

Re: [Downtime] Between Jobs

Tidelan thought for a while then said, "Hm. I have much of the fey to tell, if you desire. With you, I can false battle, also... If you do not know it, I can give to you power in far-scouting... uh, with items as the "nodatoca" and the "astramotoco"? The words for them in Common, I do not know now"

Perhaps Santio was only interested in stories of true divinities, in which case the fey would not qualify, though they had in some times and places been worshipped as Gods.

Tidelan had a slightly bloodthirsty smile when he offered to spar with Santio... though, it may be valuable for the trainee monk given that Tidelan already has Martial Weapon Proficiency as can be seen by the fact that he carries a magical spear.

Far-scouting seemed to refer to a different practice than what Santio had already displayed on their mission, and was likely a reference to long-distance navigation. This made sense, considering it was no secret that Tidelan had come from a land outlandishly far away with few political connections with this continent.

Santio nodded, and offered, “Then, perhaps in exchange for a meal, you will tell me more of the Fae … and this far-scouting of which you speak?
Learning of these two seemed to interest Santio much more than hitting each other.

If Tidelan agreed, Santio would pack away his meagre possessions, and join Tidelan somewhere around town for a meal … which Santio pays for in exchange for the learning he will receive over said meal.

So, tell me more of these Fae, please … and your people”, he asked.

Re: [Downtime] Between Jobs

Sitting down to eat and speak, Tidelan considers which story he should tell...

He settles on one, eventually.

"Okay. I will tell you now, the sad story of the Cult of Cromm Cruach. First, do not ask me 'when' or 'where' this did happen, because I do not know any of that, just that it did happen."

Clearing his throat, Tidelan began to weave a tale over the freshly-cooked meat that contrasted with the frigid air, creating a mist that seemed to sway in time with Tidelan's tune, as if solemnly remembering the events of the story itself.

"Many time before, in a land where the Gods had not yet touched the men of it, the Fae did walk on the earth of it. That world was Gaea, and the Fae had come from Annwn, so they were many welcome, yes."

Tidelan dug his toes into the ground through his one pair of worn 'civilian' shoes, reinforcing this connection with earth, and the sense of gratitude and humility that only one who realizes they have treaded upon another their whole life can feel.

"But, there was life on Gaea then too. They were the 'humans'. First, the Fae did not do many acts. They did only watch and feel wonder at this world. To us, the Fae lands are great and odd, yet to the Fae, the mortal world is the great and odd thing."

Tidelan begin to stir the mist in the air with his finger, and it danced anxiously.

"But, the Fae did not know the world at that time. They did not know the mortals did see them as Gods."" Tidelan continued, addressing Santio, "Witness, do know that the most great Fae do have great power, even near that of the Gods. But, no Fae has the mind of a God. But, do not let their skin lie to you, also not do they have the mind of a mortal being. They are just not too strange for us to speak with the other, but we will never have the power to know their minds, and they too will never in their life know us for true."

The mist seemed to shiver as a cold gust shot by, and Tidelan reached out to stabilize the meat on his desk, which almost seemed to have shuddered. "Now, back then. One of the most great fae of any time, the name of who is Cromm Cruach had made an act, that he did not know the greatness of. Humans in the land of then had been hungry. They had died from hunger. The fields of theirs did not fill with the goodness of the earth any more... But, Cromm Cruach had just moved his hand over the earth, and the hundred hundred seeds that did not yet have growth, did grow at once."

Tidelan seemed to breathe out a heavy sigh, as if his heart was weighed down by the majesty of it. Then, he abruptly took a bite of meat with his bare hands, not touching the utensils which were made of metal and not wood or ceramic.

An observer may swear the meat struggled in his grip for a moment before they blinked and gave a double take. Perhaps it was just a trick of the mist, which was still unsettled, and refracting the light...

Tidelan wiped a drop of blood from the corner of his mouth with the back of his offhand, before speaking up, "The humans did not see that Cromm Cruach had cut the most small finger of his first hand. Just one bit of the great Fae's blood did give truth to the great act. Yet, he was asked by the humans, "How?" and the great Fae did say, "

Tidelan's eyes, which are normally sea-green, seem to become a perfect shade of vibrant, almost unbearably bright green... The voice that comes from his throat is not entirely his own in tone, it sounds much older and heavily accented, "Blood makes the grass grow greener"

... Things quickly returned to normal, and Tidelan continued his tale with no sign of recognizing any oddities. Only, the mist still swirled "The humans did not know the truth of the act, as I do now. The great Cromm Cruach has two of the most great powers. But then, he had just one. His first hand can give power to any life and even to the land."

Finishing his meal, some of which seems to have vanished, or was simply being obscured by the fog that had poured off from it. Either way, Tidelan gave a silent prayer to the mists, which had grown almost unbelievably bloated, before they shook once and dispersed.

Tidelan nodded to Santio, "A giving of food to Annwn, for speaking of her own.", he finished his mug of ale, which warmed his belly like fire and continued.

"The humans did think that the great Fae had killed for the blood they had not witnessed. The humans did fear death by hunger, but they were not weak humans. They were a people of war, and they did not fear death in great battle."

Tidelan seemed to be getting nervous, indicating they were nearing the 'tragic' part of the story... "So, the humans... With their hunger healed... They did go again to war... But, this time they did so in the name of Crom Cruach."

Tidelan shivered even though the fireplace had long ago warmed up the small eatery... "The humans did get great power. In little time, they had the most power in their lands..." Tidelan inhaled shakily, "Then, they fell." the genasi seemed unwilling or unable to let out the breath he was holding in anticipation...

Eventually, he sighed through his nose, a long, almost-pained sound before continuing "Some say the Gods sent more great fighters to 'heal' the bloody humans, while some say the ones who loved Cromm Cruach did kill all their foes, but then soon did feel the hunger again, and did use their own blood to grow their bad, bad fields."

Tidelan's eyes seem to tear up a little, but then again it could be nothing more than a little freshwater; that was totally usual for a water genasi!

"I do not know the true way they did end, but I do know they did die in their own blood, yelling the name of their false God, Cromm Cruach..."

Tidelan shakes for a moment, as if holding back bile, "This is hard lore for me to say, because I still do feel the pain of Cromm Cruach, as Annwn did show me with this lore."

Tidelan explained, "The great Fae was not human, so he was not sad at the death... But, the fae know better than mortals the true greatness of being 'KING'. Their honor does not let them make false kings. Cromm Cruach did feel he was a bad king in his heart, yet his honor did not think so. So, he felt great guilt, because he knew he would not see the pain for the evil he felt that he did."

Tidelan smiles softly, in an ironic way "Yet, from all this, he got his second great power. Anything that his other hand touches will die at once."

Tidelan's face and whole body goes stiff. "Witness, you now know of The Hand of Life" a warm breeze rolls over the two, and a flowery scent as well... Tidelan's hand (which rests on the table) twitches, as the two men both notice a small, verdant clover stuck to it...

"...and of The Hand of Death
" nothing happens for a few moments, but then the mist halts to a stop, loses all motion, and vanishes... Tidelan winces and his eyes seem to grow a little dark before he coughs.

Pulling a tablecloth from nearby, Tidelan wipes his mouth, from which a dark red stain is left. Breathing heavily for a few moments, Tidelan smiles to Santio and says, "The lore of Cromm Cruach ends, Witness."

Tidelan's eyes droop as if he's about to faint, but then he seems to recover. Perhaps the... red stain... was just from the meat he had eaten? Maybe he had gotten indigestion and coughed it back up? He had spoken a lot and eaten very quickly... Or maybe...

Tidelan leans back into his chair, "You also did ask of my countrymen? I can say little of them, but that they fight a war for a false king. This war is not great. There is no Honor, and no Heart. It is an evil war. I hate it."

The genasi has grown deeply upset, but manages to pull himself out of the funk after a couple moments, "Farrad is not a powerful place. It is small, has not many powered men, and also has not many magic things."

Tidelan shrugs, "The only thing it has that this land does not is... doors to the planes of water, of earth, of fire, and of air"

Though he had finished his meal, the druid would wait to see is Santio had any questions, any comments, or other things he wished to ask about or put forward.

Re: [Downtime] Between Jobs

Santio had sat quietly, riveted, by the tale.   While Tidelan had spoken, and eaten, Santio had done neither.
When the story-song came to an end, he sat unbreathing for some time also, just staring at nothing and considering it’s entirety.
Then, he nodded, “I am … honoured … to have witnessed this lore.  Thank you, friend Tidelan”.

When the moment had passed, and it seemed that the world (miraculously having vanished) coalesced again around them, only then did Santio begin to eat.
He did so as Tidelan spoke of his home, and his people … and Santio nodded in acknowledgement.

When his plate was done, Santio looked at the remains a moment, then with a slow, deliberate gesture, he said to nobody in particular, “A giving of food to Annwn, for the honour of witnessing her lore”.
He knew that this couldn’t mean as much as the Ganesi’s offering … but maybe, in some way, Annwn might receive some small respect from the offering.

You cherish nature”, he said, “You cherish it as Life, above even people?” he asked, without judgement.

Re: [Downtime] Between Jobs

Tidelan nodded approvingly to the sacrificial offering made by the quiet man.

He also answered the man's question, "I believe my heart is with people more than it is with the nature of Gaea or the nature of Annwn. But, I believe in the nature of Gaea and the nature of Annwn more than I believe in even my most liked people... The greatnesses of the two are not even near the same, but the Hearts of all people are no the same as their knowing, yes?"

Tidelan seemed to be saying he would choose his people over both nature and the fey, yet he has total faith in the supremacy of the latter. He explains this is not a contradiction nor a 'bad choice', because all people carry biases - especially emotional ones - and the genasi predicts the two entities that he worships would encourage him to follow his heart.

It may be seen as unfortunate that Tidelan cannot speak common fluently, because he sure has been given a lot of very incredible stories to share.

Santio nodded.   But seemed sated; food for thought, and for stomach.  And didn’t seem to have much more to say right now.

Excuse me a moment, please”, he said, and cleaned up their plates rather than wait for another to do it, and returned them to this establishment’s kitchen/counter as appropriate.

When he returned, he said, “I am in need of meditation, and sleep.
If you wish, you may join me for the former, before we part to seek our beds
”.

His thoughts were as full as his tummy; and some quiet contemplation before retiring would help settle them both.

Tidelan waved away the offer with a hand, not saying anything. The genasi saved words when he could, since his sentences were hard to construct in his mind anyway.

Nodding to Santio and standing as well, "I am happy we did this. I feel that I know you more, now. For now... We both go." the genasi seemed a bit contemplative as he realized he had no idea how to say farewells in the common language...

Perhaps feeling the farewell was a bit too awkward, Tidelan put both his hands into fists and gently tapped their knuckles together an inch or so in front of his sternum. With a small nod he said, "Va belmenapar vao darconguro"

Nutcracker, the first half of your hunt you find nothing, but later in the day you manage to find a giant stoat. Choose whether to have an encounter for the xp, or just assume you won and only get the skin. You will still need to roll one more survival check (this one doesn't cost a downtime unit) to determine how much meat you get. You may additionally make separate rolls for antlers, hide, etc.

Re: [Downtime] Between Jobs

I finally hit the personal milestone of 100 Downtime Units!!!

To celebrate, Tidelan finna rampage and massacre the whole forest!

Hope you don't mind how I flavored this post

As the sun began to set, Tidelan was wandering around town. He had not gotten the chance to speak with Smith that he had wanted. And, the mission that the very thought of had made his blood boil was taking an agonizingly long time to arrive...

The town guardian was feeling antsy... He recognized this feeling by now. He had to blow off some steam... He had forgone so much rest and relaxation in the months he had been in Town...

Had it been a year yet? The genasi did not know, he had been working nonstop to improve himself and the small bits of the world around him that he called his own.

One thing had long bothered him, however... The meager beasts of this forest... They always attacked his group. Why? Did the beasts in this ever-frozen land lack a sense of self-preservation? Could they not sense the aura of their superiors? Did Gaea forget to give them a sense of fear?

Tidelan did not know. Perhaps, the forest was too large, and word had simply not gotten around yet. Sure, animals did not speak. As a druid, he knew that well enough. Yet, they still communicated. Even after death, signs would remain of their scuffle, and other animals would bring back to their herd, pack, horde, or cubs the scent-truths of what they had seen

Those would eventually become racial memories, and would be inherited during rearing by future generations. Gaea was an evolving nature, while Annwn was one of preserving information. The differences were endlessly complex yet perfectly harmonious.

Nature and Sylvan. Those words to Tidelan meant more than even if a God stood before him.

He had long pondered the meaning of Gaea's Nature... And his connection to it. As a son of a deadbeat water spirit, should he not have connection to the worldsoul of the Water Plane instead? Yet, he did not even know whom that was. He could surmise they would be the embodiment of all that was 'liquid'... As the earth would be all that is solid, the air all that is gaseous, and the fire all that is energetic...

... Thus he knew of the existence of six truths of the cosmos. Yet, almost all that he had ever touched or sensed was of nothing but the one...

The places he could visit... If only he were stronger...

His tension had given way to wanderlust... And he had found himself already walking. His feet moved relentlessly, as he crossed into the woodlands.

It was cold, but he did not feel it. The nightbirds were loud, but he did not hear it. The whole place stunk to high heaven, but he did not smell it.

He only had a single sense now. All his Five Senses, which perhaps themselves were aspects of Nature, as Honor and the Heart (among others) were aspects of Sylvan, had merged into one. The Hunt.

His thoughts soon vanished... if he had been more aware, he would have wondered why the Fae had changed The Wild Hunt to The Black Hunt... could it have had something to do with the fact that it's essence had changed from Nature to Sylvan? What a thought...

Before he entered an almost trancelike state of bloodshed, for the sole purpose of reminding the lame-brained animals of the forest to use their beastly instincts instead of acting like mindless plants, Tidelan's last thought was on the absolute beauty he found in such concepts as Nature, Sylvan, Pyro, Aero, Aqua, Terra; and their expressions of Sense (Eye, Mouth, Hand, Scent, Sound, Self, Sixth), Instinct (Apex, Lust, Hunger, Survival, Intuition), Life (Growth, Evolution, Genesis, World), of Honor, Heart, Information, Dream, of nil, of nil, of nil, and of nil. All, respectively.

Then all went black for Tidelan as he went about his good work.

A woodsman walks out of the forest. A scholar watching may harken back to the days of The Cult of Cromm Cruach... for the forest behind him was dyed red.

Blood makes the grass grow greener

With that thought, Tidelan snapped back to awareness. With a sniff and a glance over his shoulder, he knew he had done well.

He began the process of bringing the corpses back to town. The animals would catch on more quickly if there was nothing left to scavenge.

It would mean that they could attribute to the lingering sense of death, an imagined predator which had consumed even the bones of every one of its kills.

... There were a large quantity of fresh corpses, so there was much for Tidelan to do

Tell me if any of these need special encounters. I presume only the checks that meet a DC 25 (assuming you are using DCs in multiples of 5) could turn up any beasts that could actually challenge Tidelan, judging by how an Elk was supposedly of DC 15 (again, assuming multiples of 5)

I have a strategy for how this would work game-wise, if you find this unreasonable to accomplish in around twelve hours. Basically, always stay in wild shape. Short rest refreshes them, so just hunt until the trail runs a little cold, then short rest for an hour and continue.

If emergency healing is needed, spell slots can be sacrificed.

Even against another brown bear, they don't have access to rage and thus they would lose a fight, since their DPS is halved (beasts dont breathe fire or shoot ice spikes) and they take extra dmg. Tidelan has two of these, at his level.

Sorry for the adjudication hell.

[Downtime] Between Jobs

So, here's how it works: On a survival roll of 10: You find a small creature. The size goes up by 1 at 15, again at 20, again at 25. No creatures bigger than Huge can be hunted, and only creatures whose CR is lower than your level are found.

I made a mistake declaring Nutcracker found an Elk, because Elk are large, I've changed that to giant stoat.

And after consulting with Narrator, we've decided: If we determine an encounter will be too easy, we will give you a choice: You win, without running the encounter, but gain no xp, or we run the encounter, and you get xp.

With that in mind, Tidelan, do you still want to kill every animal within miles of your home?

Since Darla now has a horn that can provide enough food to feed all of hers and Carmen's customers, and Jessop doesn't buy consumables (Though I think we've made exceptions for the rations players start with,) the only real use for rations is that they reduce your lifestyle expenses by 5sp for the day you eat them.

So, here's how it works: On a survival roll of 10: You find a small creature. The size goes up by 1 at 15, again at 20, again at 25. No creatures bigger than Huge can be hunted, and only creatures whose CR is lower than your level are found.

That makes sense. But, let me just be clear... Do you intend to set a level 4 character against a CR 4 creature? That would be an unwinnable fight, and I won't participate in that.

It should probably be something closer to CR divided by four or five, since CR is designed based on a party of about those many PCs.

Honestly, yuck. This is a whole lot of same-ish encounters to go through. Since I was doing this in a fair part for the XP, I'll definitely deal with the new rules anyway, if you decide to stick to them.

quote:
With that in mind, Tidelan, do you still want to kill every animal within miles of your home?

I genuinely think this was a funny and flavorful idea. I can't tell for sure, but it seems you may disagree about that. Hence the new rules?

To me, phrasing it like that only makes it more appealing due to the absurdity of it (which is perfect for a fantasy setting). This may have been your intent to rephrase humorously, again I can't really tell why it seems so important to change the rules as soon as someone dials it to 11.

Generally, mechanics needs to be scale-proofed before introduction. I'm not going to argue that I should get to be 'grandfathered' if you both are unwilling to allow that, but I'd prefer it over what will be a couple weeks of time-consuming encounters for both of us (also will bloat the hell out of this thread, unless we move [perhaps to Tidelan's Campsite, since it hasn't had any love in quite a while?]).

I dunno, sometimes when you go hunting, something bigger and nastier starts hunting you.   Sometimes, you gotta be able to run away, also.
Its a risk every hunter takes.

Nothing else on a stoat besides fur and meat, so we'll just assume the kill is clean and go for the goods; no XP needed.

22:58, Today: Nutcracker rolled 8 using 1d20+4.  Harvest giant stoat meat.

Will engage in a long rest afterwards to level up. Camp was packed up before leaving Smith's Gambit, so as long as Nuts has a spot to set up he's good on shelter and food.

Sorry, I meant a CR appropriate for your level. Also, technically, you simply won't find any CR 4 creatures close enough to town that you could hunt for 16 hours and make it back in time for bed!

Yes, I phrased it that way to point out the absurdity. You won't lose your druid powers or anything, I just found it funny that a druid would do that.

Look, D&D lacks mechanics for a lot of things, and we have to come up with something on the fly pretty often, with no time to test it. When I made that post for Nutcracker, I hadn't eaten breakfast yet, so I wasn't thinking clearly, and Narrator was still asleep. We received a complaint about granting that much xp for 1 DTU before I even saw your post (and quite some time ago, received at least one request not to do similar things when considering adding quests that required nothing more than DTU's to complete,) and this also curtails an upcoming problem I've anticipated for awhile now, but hadn't come up with a good solution for: How to deal with high-level parties needing to travel through low-level areas without bogging things down with combat no-one wants to take part in. The fact is, I really don't want to run any of those encounters, but it hardly seems fair to let characters who are proficient in Survival get the ability to earn hundreds of times more xp for their DTU's than everyone else, without any greater risk or effort.

When we run any combat for downtime, it will be in separate threads.

Tidelan is a very special flavor of druid.

I took most of his inspiration from my own personal interpretation of the Feywild, if it had more pulls from Welsh, Celtic and Irish folklore/mythology, rather than pop culture (though there is still plenty of that, but I've withheld introducing it from this game mostly)

Wrote a big long thing but my post got deleted, so I'll just summarize with remarking that this IS a druid thing to do, just not how every druid would do it.

There is nothing more natural than animals killing animals. Even if Tidelan had no 'good' reason to do this (he does, because he is genuinely concerned that there is something wrong with the local wildlife, since big groups of armed humans keep getting attacked by beasts that are quickly slain and chased away) and decided to do as much harm to the environment as possible; he would not feel any guilt if he had a reason that could be justified by any of his other beliefs. Tidelan is absolutely aware that nothing he does will have any permanent damage to the world.

Sure, from a Human perspective; nuking the planet seems like a bad idea. But the world will recover after a thousand years. That is an incredibly short period of time, from the POV of an immortal entity (of which Tidelan worships or has lore of many)

That was the main reason I kept that exposition dump in my post. Because it implicitly explains his justification for doing such an 'off-brand' thing.

Tidelan is reverent towards nature because he worships Gaea, but he does not think murdering animals is a kind of blasphemy against her. And to the other entity he worships (Annwn), she wouldn't even flinch at the death of every living being. Why?

Because to the Fae, 'death is just a change of states' (yep stole this from To Your Eternity)

The fae are not humanoid. It may be more accurate to describe them as hardly even organisms. If I had completley free reign over extraplanar lore, I would go as far as to describe the ""BIOLOGY"" of the Fae as much like the Idaten Deities (other really good ongoing anime this season)

... To be honest, I could see even without barbarian levels or any strange worships, how any player could run an animal killing druid. Just have their motivation to be ''Apex Predator''

A lot like Garruk from MTG lore, if you will.

I certainly appreciate the effort that goes into running this number of characters and players. I've had a big group before (7-9 a session), so I know how much work it can be.

I like using the DTUs for immersion and reward than getting any XP out of it. Can't say I have seen any indication in any of the books that downtime activities grant XP, so completely up to the DMs if they want to grant any.

If there isn't a hard limit to how much DTU I can use (a'la Tidelan) I'd like to spend 10 more over the course of 5 days (if allowed) to get more food for Fierce Heart. And pelts. Pelts for possible profit or custom armor (Sai).

I always try and run games (regardless of system) with a cast of 4 to 6.

I don't enjoy solo RP, so that's out. Two players would be too few, and three is the same issue.

Honestly, is it weird that I feel like there are more possible connections between two people rather than three?

I mean with two, you could have endless feelings towards the other, endless interactions and such. But with three, you almost limit yourself by adding a third element, which is required to participate, but can only fit in neatly under certain conditions.

To me, five or six is the ideal point for a diverse cast. Seven would be way too much, as six is basically the most difficult I can handle. Four would probably be on the easier end of adjudication.

I can probably only run one game like that at a time. So yeah, these GMs are nutty bonkers to me as well.

BTW, if you search thru my game history, you will find most my games don't follow the trends I just explained I prefer. That is because I was a terrible GM when I first joined this start, and all my games died (except one, which I'm sure only succeeded 50% because I had a helper, and 50% because the concept was in such high demand)

Honestly, I feel like I've only ever run one game legitimately well. I would like to count another of those among them, but it died in the water too young to tell.

quote:

The GMs have shown that combat will reward XP, regardless of how it takes place. This was confirmed with the Battle Arena thread (wasn't my suggestion to add as an incentive, before anyone asks), which even surprised me.

Backtracking on that now would be counter-intuitive to the players who have been paying attention.

quote:
I like using the DTUs for immersion and reward than getting any XP out of it.

Not to be rude, but that's just your personal opinion, and not necessarily the main intent behind DTU.

In fact, originally I thought they introduced DTU rules (which I am not familiar with) to support players who wished to go the ECON route with their characters. This makes sense, because this is basically a 'cooperative town-builder' game in DND form.

Also, when you say you do it for "immersion and reward", you mean "story immersion" and "mechanical rewards". I'd like to point out that XP basically falls into that second category, and the way you split it up into three groups is arbitrary.

Not saying this to nitpick, but to point out that it would be a misleading narrative for players to not think of 'XP' as a game resource. It absolutely is, in the same way gold or magic items are. (IIRC, earlier editions of DND even tied leveling to gold somehow)

quote:
If there isn't a hard limit to how much DTU I can use (a'la Tidelan)

Again; scaleproofing matters.

If the GMs don't design mechanics to be scaleproof, they will naturally fall out of usage or even functionality, since even with bounded accuracy, 5th edition characters scale up over time.

I'm against limiting DTU usage. Nothing would be more cool a couple years down the line then the oldest players finally blowing off 200 DTUs for some ridiculous (noncombat) feats!

Of course, I made my post before the GMs decided that each encounter had to be acted out (I AM STILL INTERESTED), otherwise I may have not set myself up for a possible 40 encounters.

The only reason I posted was because I saw that you made 50 xp off 1 DTU, so I said 'damn, that is awesome. time to invest!'

That was hotfixed, and it doesn't look like I'm getting grandfathered. So, I accept the GMs choice that more XP from DTU needs to come with more risk and effort.

Thus, the mutually-undesirable predicament where we both get to SLOG through a two-digit number of one-or-two round combat encounters.

Not criticizing anyone here, since that's already been resolved by Word of God, and I've already given my take. Right now just clearing up any possible confusion over the circumstance from my own POV.

Funnily enough, if I were a masochist, I could burn another 80 downtime units (... stepping back for a second .... man, has it been close to two years I've been playing this game? ... What a ride, yo.) to do this four more times.

Yes, that would mean [using the average from above] a total of 150 encounters.

I'm pretty sure there is only around 100 total beasts in all of DND, and since we're getting only CR appropriate encounters, there would be a lot of duplicates.

Hilariously, if I do this every two levels (which would be possible with the posting rate of this game), I could get access to every single wildshape [pending them being native to the Rimewoods, of course] in the most epic way ever, by having killed them myself.

Probably should clarify that I mean Tidelan, not me personally [the human being], I just thought first-person pronouns sounded better there than saying 'my PC' or some derivative each time.

In real life, I feel bad for killing spiders or flies (well, only a little); and whenever my cat misbehaves, I am the one to apologize. what im saying is "I'm Not an Animal Abuser, But I Play One On TV!" haha thats my new shirt lolol

Edit: Also should mention vanishing into the woods mysteriously then returning with new powers is the most awesome thing imaginable so please sit down [I picked up dis sass from Carmen O_O].

Also, I don't know why I was worried about dragging bodies back. I would only be keeping the bits anyway (which would fit into the inventory, and thus pose no conundrum because in the pitch room, the devs said "screw logic and common sense for 5th edition" followed by a war cry of "let them be unencumbered!" [what a stupid pull])

Anyway, since we are going to be acting these encounters out; I'm going to make sure I purchase / Tidelan stocked up on torches before we start / he left

This is to burn the meat, so that the hungry animals cannot eat it, and the ones who notice the smell of disappointing barbecque will be put in their place at the thought of a predator that can eat so much.

Druidic deception is hilarious. Maybe if I get bored, I can have Tidelan start leaving notes around the forest in Druidic saying stuff like "I just slaughtered the Calydonian Boar. Out of temptation, I donned the bearskin to taste it's meat. It was mediocre, at best. A little too gamey, for my taste." and "Oops, was that a guardian spirit? Crap! Gaea is gonna be so pissed!" or "lol you call that a 'ferocious monstrosity'? silly farmer, a meager sire of jormungandr poses no threat to me. rest assured i am protecting this land due to my great benevolence" maybe even "gg ez. alpha dire wolf king plus the weakest raid boss ever bro just solod him like in sao haha im cool like kirito" let alone a trail of cryptic notes starting with "the wolves of this forest do not seem to fear me, though I am cloaked in the skin of their kind?" and ending, thirty dread-inducing chapters later with "of course. the curse of these woods. the frost never melts. it must have also affected the hearts of the animals... wait... what is that sound? the eyes in the woods... the sounds of claws... i- is this ... !... Ah, I see. You were responsible for this."

Sadly, Tidelan is not a creative writer smh (then again, he has talents I lack too... namely the whole reality-bending impossible magic and stuff haha)

Re: [Downtime] Between Jobs

Each downtime unit is essentially you spending eight hours on a task when you're not out on a job. That's why you have to pay your lifestyle expenses for every two you spend. Time will stretch as far as we need it to without breaking, so if you want to spend 60DTUs in the time between your last job and the assault, even though that's at least two months, it won't mean you have to miss the assault.

For each 15 or higher, you can specifically go for black bears or tundra apes(CR 1/2, easy encounter, 100xp)
For each 20 or higher, you can go for brown bears, tigers (CR1, medium encounter, 200xp) If you want something with a good chance of killing you, you can try aurochs, giant boars, sabertooth tigers, woolly rhinos or polar bears (both CR 2, deadly encounter, 450xp.) For those 25s, you can target giant Elk (same difficulty and xp as the polar bears, but they're huge.)

Also note that if you keep enough meat to feed yourself each day, you can save 5sp from your lifestyle expenses if you're sleeping in your house.

Not sure if you plan on deciding when these occur randomly, or doing them in some order. I've listed them in my preferred order (from bottom to top) for that reason, but am prepared to fight them however they come, which does admittedly make more sense.

That is reasonable, given the circumstances.

Not sure if it was just your example, but I only spent 20 DTUs (160 hours, or ~6.666 days)

It's also worth noting that with this style of play, it's plausible to get a whopping twelve short rests in a day! Though, it will likely be lower depending on how long it takes to find each beast. Still, it is very likely to be more than a couple, given the absurd number of encounters in this day haha.

Re: [Downtime] Between Jobs

Oops, Nutcracker, if you don't want to face deadly encounters with giant elk (CR2) you may substitute those rolls with regular sized elk, which we don't need to run combat for.

For everything else, you've gathered enough meat to make 450 rations (150 more than the fierce hearts require!)

Regular elk is fine with me. =D Are there any pelts or other parts that came along with the meat? Can possibly sell stuff to Jessop for some coin.

Re: [Downtime] Between Jobs

Okay, Nutcracker, that's another 50 rations worth of meat.

You need a separate survival check for each pelt you want (and one for bones, one for claws, etc, but pelts are the only thing you can really resell.)

A day or so after the Burning Stag assault cooled off, and everyone had returned to town,
Santio could be seen in a glen on the outskirts of town, practising katas with his new katana.

Most of the time, these kata has Santio holding the beautifully crafted blade with both hands ... but there were times that he slowly moved it through his motions single handedly.

Re: [Downtime] Between Jobs

In the days (and weeks?) that followed the assault on Burning Stag ...

Lady Donella Turen could be observed working on a magnificent new contraption.  A magical, mechanical-like steed.
While everyone around town had got used to seeing the Rock Gnome wheeling around town in her magical, mechanical-like wheelchair ... this was something entirely new, and different.

A spider form construct ... about the size of a Giant Wolf Spider (Medium sized construct/creature).   A mechanical steed with bulbous form, and eight long, spindly legs:  it had a small head at the front of its rotund body, complete with pincers/mandibles.

And while most 'big folk' couldn't ride such a thing, it made for an impressive and effective steed for the small (3' nothing) paraplegic Rock Gnome.
Mounted onto the construct's back, by way of buckles on its side (rather than a girth strap), was a typical riding saddles ... complete with saddle bags.
And with the hand-holds, and the creatures ability to crouch itself down, Lady Donella was able to climb onto the critter's back/saddle.

The construct steed was larger and filled more space than her usual wheelchair ... but in more outdoor settlings, it could move with more precision and agility.
Not only that, but it was, like most folk's steeds, sentient: and trained to follow her commands.  In fact, it seemed very protective of the little Gnome.

Donella would, usually, be seen out and about in town in her wheelchair; the new Spider Strider designed more for wilderness use ... however, it did seem sapient and independent  enough to have its own life in and around Donella store ('Leather and Longings'), though it never ranged far.

[Downtime] Between Jobs

Kiara spent the day attending to the task her Mistress had set for her, that of unifying the Southern Clans behind one banner.

She was cautious, and subtle in her work, but she spoke of the strength of Smith's Gambit, the warriors and sages who had flocked to that banner. She encouraged the warriors of the camp to tell their own stories, tales of bravery and blood as they defeated the Red Foot. Anything to stir the memories of what it felt like to face that Tribe that had once been thought of as so strong.

Free DTU

Due to Silver Tongue, Kiara can't get less than a 19, so that's a 19.

07:00, Today: Kiara Goldentongue rolled 17 using 1d20+9.  Persuasion

[Downtime] Between Jobs

Gee, thanks, Kiara. Now the boss wants me to add a reputation system to the game to track how well the tribes are getting along. For now, looks like you don't have inspiration. Go ahead and mark inspiration on your sheet, and you also, of course, get 1 whole xp for spending a DTU (even if this was a bonus one.)
