We'd like to apologize for the slow responses to any of the threads. We've been having some real life difficulties dealing with 100+ degree weather and a broken cooler. Thankfully we were able to get a replacement pump so hopefully that does the trick, but as many of you could imagine sitting in a house with barely a fan that feels like it's doing nothing does not make for a good writing environment. Especially when our desktops heat up the room even further. Thank you very much for baring with us as we get things back on track.

Cooler is fixed. Now, to catch up.

We live in the Mojave desert in southern California, where it gets upwards of 110F degrees, with little-to-no humidity. That's before turning on a PC that raises the temperature even more, assuming it doesn't overheat and stop functioning. Real fun.

Not really an extended absence per se. I work in IT and most of my clients are in logistics and obviously they're getting hammered and the cracks in their IT stuff are showing, so I'm getting hammered too.

That's entirely the right Christchurch - but I had to look it up. I'm not familiar enough with the area to know what's where. :)

Boneclaw:

Ahh, that sucks to hear dude. Back problems are the worst.

I've had recurring back issues on and off for the last two years. I put on so much weight.

I finally got better recently and I've been able to start weight training again, feels amazing to have my mobility and core strength back.

Best of luck to your recovery! Can't pray (not religious) but sending good/healing vibes your way. :)

Actual Extended Absence Stuff

I'm flat out right now, not sure how regularly I'll be able to get onto this game for the next 4-5 days or so.

I've got my last day at the office getting my clients ready for me to be on leave. I'm in IT, I'm the top-level "get this guy in case of emergency" person. All my clients are in logistics in the busiest time of year, so... Yeah. Busy.

Then I've got all the house/prep shit for a two day road trip with three humans and two border collies, and the yard is already overflowing. So on top of everything else, I need to beat it back into submission so the month while I'm away doesn't get utterly ridiculous, don't want the neighbors hating me. Full days' effort right there, easy.

Then up at the crack of dawn on Sunday to kick off the two day road trip itself.

I'll have a laptop with me and I'll be keen to get online when I can. But family and dog and driving and sleep time comes first.

Should be back to regular-ish posting once I'm set up in Christchurch and back to a normal routine, which should be sometime after Tuesday 22nd Dec NZ time. :)

Re:  Extended Absence Thread

No worries, IMO a lack of concentration is the main ruin for DND.

As an example; me and my brother were gonna start a new campaign today, but he was tired, so we decided not to play today, since that is often better than investing to something when you aren't in the headspace to fulfill that commitment.

Forcing yourself to be creative can lead to burn out, but it can also lead to worse things; like subpar content or even a major mistake. I know this for a fact, since I do a lot of creative writing, and getting bored of stuff is never my biggest worry; it's much worse to wreck something you've put a lot of work into because you weren't sufficiently self-aware.

Tl;dr Don't be a gm while you're sick it sucks ( for everyone ) !

Back from our trip. Good visit, but stressful. Narrator is on muscle relaxers at the moment, so I got to drive cross-state, after mostly avoiding getting behind the wheel since my accident last year. Then we had to go grocery shopping, since we had the foresight not to leave a fridge full of food behind for a week. I'm about to go to bed, but we get to relax tomorrow, and hopefully, catch up with you all!

The difference between driving in the UK to the US is that our tiny island has a fifth of your population and significantly less land to live on. A trip to London from the north can easily take 4 hours or more and it’s just a few hundred miles.

Living in Australia now and it’s the same size as the US but a maybe a fifteenth or the population. It’s a dream to drive in and very little traffic when you’re out of the city.

I always have to consciously remember this, because the Mercator Map they show us at school and daily life doesn't really do justice to the size of a lot of places. Namely, greenland and africa are shown to be way smaller in proportion to the other landmasses.

IIRC, it has something to do with image stretching occurring as you get further from the equator.

quote:

I know it's like that in most big cities, but this is just wild. I figure the UK may be the closest thing we have to an entirely-urban nation... Japan may be a close second though, from what I've learned of.

I can't speak from experience on long travel times (my furthest car ride was several hours and didn't even leave the province, and when I was an infant we took an airplane to morocco to visit family), but I know here in Canada traveling across provinces is an ordeal. Say you wanted to go from Ontario (where I live) to British Columbia (somewhere I maybe want to visit one day), you would never ever take a car... unless you have a few months to burn on a road trip lifestyle. You would take an airplane.

I actually recall the same thing sometimes being done in America (it may have just been from storybooks, or maybe it's a sort of inflated trope that does occur in real life but very rarely) where you'll take a car or motorbike and travel across the large swaths of desert, stopping at motels.

It sounds wild west, but to my understanding it's something you can do in modern day!

Only about 150 miles, but I since I hadn't driven father than 7 miles at a time since last June, and still get nervous behind the wheel, it was an ordeal.

Years ago, my brother and I drove from California to New Hampshire in 3 days. We took turns driving, and got a speeding ticket at one point, but it definitely didn't take months.

Tidelan, we did eat our food, before we left. That's why we had to go shopping right after we got back.

Actually most of the UK is still pretty green. We have several major metropolitan areas, London being the biggest, but still lots of green between them. If you want seriously urban nations then I’d start with Hong Kong and Singapore...

What we don’t have is the HUGE areas of wilderness that have next to no people at all, such as you get in Canada, USA and Australia. By comparison our green bits are small, but they’re still there!

The US road trip is still an iconic dream vacation for many Brits. Get a car in NY or somewhere else in the north east and drive across the whole country, seeing all the sights as you go, then end up on a beach in California. A lack of geographical knowledge normally gets in the way, as the romance is that you drive past Mount Rushmore via the Everglades on the way to Yellowstone, then go to the Smithsonian en route... I do wonder what great landmarks would actually be on the route if you went direct from NY to LA?

So far we've gone to 7, 11, and 13 different states. We often hear them say something along the lines of feeling like they're living in a movie while driving across the various landscapes. Congrats on the second dosage!

This reminds me of a time when I was in grade school, and I asked my grandparents if taking double medicine would make me double healthy. They said no, but I knew they were just keeping secrets from me (my sleep paralysis demons told me so, he's a good guy when you get past the tentacles) so I got all my buddies together and we took every pill we could find around the house.

We were all hospitalized for three weeks and Josh died from intestinal bleeding, but I haven't had anything worse than the flu since, so I count this as an overall win.

Real story, don't laugh. truly happened. definitely not midnight and sleep deprived, no.

Hopefully they made it home safe and are just taking it easy.

I know nobody asked, but a couple cools things have happened in the last weeks so I thought I'd share while I'm here:

1. I joined two new games on RPOL. Very fun, but probably a mistake considering I'll be swamped when this game comes back ha ha

2. I graduated high school :) Now, I am officially unemployed! LMAOOO

Sure! That sounds fun! Heres some ideas, anyone can feel free to respond with thoughts:

quote:
I definitely like the idea of a TDM in the battle arena... In fact, I'll probably have Tidelan join this time around, because whose gonna stop him?

To keep this balanced, the teams need to have an equal sum of levels. I don't care how many are on each team, but they should be equal in size since 'bounded accuracy' in 5th edition causes quantity to have an advantage over quality.

An example roster could thus be:

Team 1: Level 2 Player, Level 2 Player, Level 3 Player, Level 4 Player, Level 1 Player
Team 2: Level 3 Player, Level 1 Player, Level 1 Player, Level 2 Player, Level 5 Player

Also, a new monetization system for a new tournament style, and after getting lots of good advice previously:

quote:
The entry fee is five gold for spectators. For combatants, they can put in up to fifty gold.

If a combatant falls unconscious, they are considered disqualified, and standby healers not part of the competition will remove them from the field.

Combatants on the winning team get back 1.5x what they put in.

There will be no official gambling amongst spectators, but they are free to do so with each other, if they so please

Definitely simpler and quicker this time around, but that's a good thing for filling just about a week while the GMs are away. We won't need them for much adjudication either, since the only thing they would need to roll for is how many people show up, which we can do retroactively since money is not an issue for Tidelan atm (you guys saw how last time ended lmao).

Anyway, if this interests enough people (at least 6, up to 14) I'd be happy to announce it in an IC thread as soon as tonight.

Re:  Extended Absence Thread

So to make it official, I kinda got tired of mimicking as I felt it hampered my interaction somewhat. Tried to get a helmet of telepathy through Hexia's store and when that proved impossible i took a breather. Decided to play a second character but by that time the assault stories had started up. So taking a longer break but haven't entirely vanished.

Re:  Extended Absence Thread

Ok good to know thank you. I'm sorry you've been struggling. I didn't quite realize the extent of why you wanted the helm of telepathy. No reputable vendor of magic is willing to sell magic that can manipulate free will, therefor you wouldn't be able to find the helm, but Conspirator and I did talk and we would be willing to have Hexia sell you Helm of Restricted Telepathy. This would be like the other helm, but without the manipulate others quality. Obviously since this is a lesser item we wouldn't charge as much and it wouldn't be as rare. I hope this would be acceptable. If it is, then you are welcome to return to Hexia's shop saying that you received a message from her to return to her shop and that she may have something that will interest you. I hope this helps. If not then we can try and work something else out. Please let us know, but if you wouldn't mind maybe we can switch this over to a pm. Much appreciated. Thank you. ^_^

Carmen Diaz:
Are you on the dark side of the moon? :)

May as well be: Rural United States. We're lucky there's even an internet provider that reaches us at all. We're on the outer edge of the nearest satellite's service area, so the signal is weak on a good day. When its cloudy or windy-- and its usually windy-- it takes several minutes to load a webpage, if it doesn't timeout, which causes me to have to retype everything I submitted if I forgot to copy it first. Each combat post requires at least 3 open tabs, (the thread itself, the reply page, and a page for each monster's stats, though there's often other things I need to look up, as well.) I'm running two fights at the moment, a quest that isn't in combat yet, plus checking all the PMs (usually at least 4 or 5 at any given time.) Not counting this one, I currently have 9 tabs open for this game, and I haven't loaded a monster for one of the fights yet! If I was posting from home, I'd have gotten maybe 2 of them to load by now. If I wasn't already bald, the service here would be enough to make me pull my hair out! /rant

Safe and sound.

I did end up getting called in on Friday for what was supposed to be a 12 hour shift at at an Emergency Shelter the county set up, but they wound up consolidating shelters and closing the one I was assigned to after 10 hours.  Add to that the fact that there was literally only one mental health crisis I needed to deal with the whole 10 hours? It's been easy.

Elisar Moonraven:
Hi all

Just wanted to drop in and say hi and give an update to my extended absence. My 14yo son passed away suddenly and unexpectedly over Christmas. Needless to say this was a huge shock and we have had a lot to deal with. I am hoping to be back at some point, but as to a timescale I couldn't say.

Happy for GMs to NPC Elisar and Golun as needed, then move them back to town when missions are completed.

That is heartbreaking.    Our love and thoughts are with you, friend.

Re:  Extended Absence Thread

Hey everyone I hope you had a happy holiday. Conspirator and I went on a trip to visit family and I managed to test positive for covid. Don't know when we'll be able to post, but hopefully soon. Will try to keep you all posted. Take care all and be safe.

No wifi at home for the next few months or so. Will try to post whenever I go somewhere with wifi and enough space to put my laptop. Currently posting from my folks' place in Vegas.

Re:  Extended Absence Thread

Hey everyone I'm very sorry I know it's been a while. I've been dealing with a serious case of burnout and a lack of self esteem. This is no ones fault, but my own that I have not been able to post and I apologize for not posting sooner to let you all know what's been going on. It seems that it took a lot out of me being as busy as I have been. Still no excuse. I don't know when I'll be able to post again but I will see what I can do today and we'll see. At the very least I will be helping my husband take over the quests I was running if I find that I still cannot seem to post. I hope that it doesn't have to come to that, but it's bad enough I've been keeping you all waiting for so long. You guys deserve better and my other half deserves a more consistent co-dm. Hopefully there won't be too many discrepancies. Thank you all for the wonderful patience you've had with us, and me especially, and for being the wonderful players that you are. Much love to everyone. Wishing you all the best.

I understand burn-out, and life issues very well.  Take all the time you need.  Come back when you can, and have the desire too.  I hope things improve for you.  We'll be here when you're ready and able.  It's a great game, but nothing to stress over.

The first part of that sentence was correct. Burnout is an affliction, first step to healing is to not beat yourself up about it.
It's good to learn your limits, to take the time to heal when you need it.

Applause for the good job, both storytelling and listening to yourself.
Now go relax.
