Spying Carlton at last, Elisar beckoned him over and shook his hand warmly. "Good Master Honeywhisper, we have indeed returned from our expedition. We have news for you. Please, sit awhile and let us give you the details."
He gestured towards a free table and took a seat, and then waved at one of Carmen's serving staff to bring a round of drinks. "As I said, news we have indeed. Alas, not good tidings, but also not truly bad tidings either. We did indeed find your friend, Master Finestar. He was by a tree to the north of here, deep in the Rimewood; a mighty feather tree known as the Pillar of the World. Alas his body was broken and lifeless."
He paused for a moment before continuing. "But his spirit lived on. He had separated his spiritual self from his body, so we conversed together. He had made peace with the world, and was ready to transcend to the heavens. He just needed some help to make that final step. We assisted as best we could, helping him finish his final song. At the end he was happy, and asked a boon of me. He asked that I sing his final song for you, so that you might sleep more easily knowing that your old friend is at rest. I agreed, and with that his spirit rose up into the heavens, free of the shackles of mortality. We buried his body at the base of the feather tree, so he may live on in its mighty bows."
He held up the lute that Finnious had given him. "He gifted me his lute, a fine gift indeed. I hope that I will prove worthy of such a generous offering. If it please you I would like to accompany you on it tonight. We can play his final song, and then make merry to honour his memory. I do not think he would wish you to mourn his passing, but rather to celebrate his life and your friendship."
He glanced at his companions, happy for them to add further details that he may have missed.
