Re: [Quest] Third Keenbellow Exploratory Expedition

Had he been by himself, Verbannt might have tried to tame the beasts. As things stood, he knew it would be a waste of time and lore to even try. Instead, there was a great ripping of flesh and a snapping of bone as he stole the skin of the Dire Wolves, and in an explosion of movement he charged across the snow. His form rippled and shifted, and the thing that slammed into the Southern Wolf was its mirror image. Snapping and growling, Verbannt drove his fangs towards his prey. He could not find purchase, for the two were evenly matched, and only time would tell which ground the other into the soon to be bloodied snow.

Looks like I go first.

Bonus: Wildshape
Move: Move to H23
Action: Miss on a 7

Re: [Quest] Third Keenbellow Exploratory Expedition

Lukas Verbannt races towards Enemy 2 transforming into the mirror image of the wolf ahead of him. He tries to strike at it, but the other wolf is too fast dodging out of the way of Verbannt's jaw's grasp.
Lukas Verbannt wildshaped into a Dire Wolf.

Enemy 1 moves with incredible speed charging at Santio.
Enemy 1 dashes to G13.

Enemy 2 tries to take a bite out of Lukas, but this time Lukas is too swift.

Enemy 3 charges Santio and tries to attack biting at him, but falls short.
Enemy 3 moves to F12.

The two were evenly matched, but Verbannt did not need to win, he just needed to stall the beast long enough for the rest of his compatriots to gang up on the other two. He danced out of its jaws, ripping at its legs with his own maw and seeking to drive it to the ground.

19:54, Today: Lukas Verbannt rolled 21 using 1d20+5.  Attack.
DC 13 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone

If it is knocked prone, I'll move to G15. That will draw an opportunity attack, but at disadvantage, and using half it's movement to get up means it won't be able to close the distance so it's worth it.

Sorry about the delay!

Trusting Tidelan to remain between Galenna and the two closer wolves, Spark moved out of the group to capture all of the group within range of his magical abilities. Intoning as he goes, Spark stretched out his arms in prayer and as the comforting sound of steel grinding on steel as a large cog flips over, a sense of warmth and purpose seeps in to some of his companions.

Re: [Quest] Third Keenbellow Exploratory Expedition

Tidelan was no strategic genius, but he had done a lot of fighting since his time arriving to Smith's Gambit. Pulling forth that knowledge, he moved more lithely than one may expect for his build, and strategically placed himself behind the wolf.

Feeling Spark's holy magic infuse his body and enhance his martial prowess he shouted some words of appreciation before bloody muscle spilled forth from his body, and then all at once rearranged it's composition to be that of a brown bear. It's haunches were the last thing to form, as this time the additional mass had been conjured from Tidelan's backside.

He didn't like leaving Galenna's side. But, he hoped she would back up a fair distance. This was also the best placement for him, because now both wolves were being harried by Tidelan and Santio respectively. Neither would get to Galenna without a little bit of damage.

Then, he unleashed a flurry of claws and teeth into the direwolf's rear end.

His claws barely scraped the fur, and he nearly broke his jaw when his teeth missed meaty flank and slammed into one another.

The genasi thought for a minute that Spark had perhaps cast 'Bane' when he had meant to cast 'Bless'...

12:57, Today: Tidelan Wavyrus rolled 9,12,10,11 using 1d20+6+1d4,1d8+4,1d20+6+1d4,2d6+4 with rolls of 2,1;8,3,1;5,2.  blessed bear bonanza.

Re: [Quest] Third Keenbellow Exploratory Expedition

Round 1 Cont.

Santio focused his energy on the wolf in front of him unleashing a flurry of blows. The attack with his quarterstaff and the first unarmed strike hit leaving the wolf a little wobbly, but only for a moment.
Santio attacks Enemy 1 and deals a total of 12 damage.

Boneclaw rubbed his fingers together and gestured out toward Enemy 3. A bright light flew from his fingers spectacularly hitting the dire wolf dead on covering it in glittering dim light.
Boneclaw attacked Enemy 3 and hit dealing a total of 19 damage. The next attack made on this wolf (E3) has advantage.

Spark moved quickly into position and reached out his hands then placed them together praying to his god to bless the group.
Spark moves to D17 and casts bless on Verbannt, Santio, and Tidelan. Each now adds an additional 1d4 to their attack rolls and saving throws.

Galenna Keenbellow instinctively moves back away from the closer wolves and behind Boneclaw.
Galenna Keenbellow moves to A14.

Tidelan Wavyrus places himself between Galenna and the wolf, squarely behind it and transforms. His shape tears into that of a bear and he wastes no time in attacking the wolf before him.
17:38, Today: The Narrator, on behalf of Tidelan Wavyrus, rolled 15 using 1d20+6.  Advantage.
The bear form Tidelan Wavyrus tears into the wolf with his claws being sure to open wounds as the wolf cries out in pain. He tries to bite at the wolf as well, but to no avail.
Tidelan Wavyrus moves to G10 and hits Enemy 3 for a total of 12 damage.

Beginning Round 2

Lukas Verbannt dodged out of Enemy 2's grasp as he return with his own maw successfully dragging the wolf to the ground. Taking his chance Lukas Verbannt makes a run back towards his allies. The wolf instinctively snaps at Lukas Verbannt's legs, but Lukas Verbannt is too fast for him.
Lukas Verbannt hits Enemy 2 dealing it a total of 10 damage. He then moves to G15.

Enemy 1 viciously bites down on Santio's side ripping into him and leaving lasting marks.
Enemy 1 hits Santio for 24 piercing damage. Santio must succeed on a DC 13 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Enemy 2 shakes its head and gets to its feet. It runs after its fleeing prey.
Enemy 2 dashes to G17.

Enemy 3 bites at Santio's leg and hits its mark drawing blood and dragging him to the ground.
Enemy 3 hits and deals Santio 11 piercing damage.

- rolled 22 using 1d20+3.  Strength Save.
And with the loss of 35HP … and Enemy 3 bites at Santio's leg and hits its mark drawing blood and dragging him to the ground ...

Santio lay mauled, bleeding and dead(?) on the ground, in the maw of one great beast.

Ok, so Santio has 'fallen unconscious' (p197; as he has no HP)
The first attack didn't drag him down, nor overcome him.
The second attack did drag him down, and dropped him to -3HP, but didn't outright kill him.

And as of next turn:  "Whenever you start your turn with 0 hit points, you must make a special saving throw, called a death saving
throw, to determine whether you creep closer to death or hang onto life".
Please correct me if I am wrong on this.
Also, please, does Boneclaw's Blessing to Saving Throws aid me in these?

Verbannt had fought with cleverness and guile, but his plans had backfired when Santio fell. He had hoped to team up upon the simple traveler's foe, but instead found himself pinched between two of the beasts. He let out a howl, seeking to draw the other's attention to the downed monk, and then threw himself at the Direwolf who had downed the man.

Miss.

Spark watched the wolves savage Santio with what would have been an expression of horror painted across his face if the metal mask would have been able to project such emotions. As it was he picked up his feet and made sure his shield was firmly in grasp as he charged into the fray.

"Hey, there you big, nasty wolf!" He shouted while waving his free arm to draw attention to himself. As he closed with Santio he clenched his fist and muttered a new prayer. A second cog turned with a metallic thud and Spark reached down to press his hand into Santio's wounds.

Boneclaw also focused his attention on Santio. Santio was dying.
He needed stabilizing first. And Boneclaw was just a bit faster than Spark.
"Not today", he said with the reverend voice of an old master he'd encountered during his time of study.
Aware of Spark's abilities as a healer and having worked with him before, Boneclaw guessed what Spark was planning to do. Instead of doubling as a healer he focused on giving Tidelan an advantage over the vicious dire wolf. Less wolves, less people needing to be healed. Another bolt of light struck at the beast, briefly lighting it up.

Flying into a livid rage at the felling of his young companion Santio, Tidelan's rational mind faded with the thought of leaving the healing to the clerics, and was replaced with a madness that sought only to kill his enemies.

Re: [Quest] Third Keenbellow Exploratory Expedition

Round 2 Cont.

Santio lies on the ground unconscious and bleeding, but he breaths in still seemingly fighting for life.
And not that it really matters, but Santio made his first death save.
20:11, Yesterday: The Narrator, on behalf of Santio, rolled 17,1 using 1d20,1d4.  Death Save.

Boneclaw motioned towards Santio and in the voice of his old master spoke, "Not today." He then turned his attention back on the wolf as he once again rubbed his fingers together and a bolt of light struck Enemy 3 almost seeming to electrify it. It stood for only a moment after that and then fell to the ground in its place.
Boneclaw cast Spare the Dying on Santio and hit Enemy 3 dealing a total of 18 damage. Enemy 3 is dead!

Spark wastes no time in getting to Santio and muttering a prayer as he pressed down on the wounds. Less than a moment and the bleeding had stopped.
Spark ends his movement on E13 and heals Santio for 9 HP. Santio is now coming back to consciousness, but is still prone.

Galenna Keenbellow stays behind Boneclaw.

Seeing the wolf before him fall Tidelan Wavyrus doesn't hesitate in moving towards his next target, Enemy 1. Tidelan Wavyrus flew into a rage and he attacked furiously managing to dig both his maw and claws into the target. He ripped and tore till this wolf had stopped moving as well.
Tidelan Wavyrus moves to G12 and hits Enemy 1 for a total of 29 damage. Enemy 1 is dead!

Round 2 Complete

Beginning Round 3

Lukas Verbannt attacked the last wolf standing, but missed his mark chomping into midair.

Enemy 1 lies dead on the ground.

Enemy 2 sees its allies fall. It backs away until it swiftly turns and runs away.
Enemy 2 disengages and runs to 15ft south of the map.

Tidelan drops his form, the process was still a little grotesque as it was the reverse of the forward transformation. Anyway, after the slopping sounds finished, he didn't miss a beat getting into a stride and walking towards Santio amd Spark whom were together.

He nods approvingly and addresses the two in a row, "Friend Santio, how are you now? Friend Spark, I believe you are much help in fighting! Your magic is very good!"

Turning to Lukas, and beckoning to where the second enemy fled to, "Maybe this beast will be the beast to say the true of us all. Why do the beasts of this cold woods still attack us? We have killed so much of them. They do not get our meat from us all. Can they not see this?" he seemed to be both ranting, but also desperately looking to Lukas for answers.

Tidelan shrugged and looked to Galenna with a small lowering of his head, "Lady gnome, you are not hurt. Good. Let us all move to the end of this."

Spark nodded his thanks at Tidelan's compliments, but his attention was more on the recently unconscious Santio. "How do you feel, are you able to walk all right?" There was a measure of sympathy to his voice, but there was an equal measure of respect. The lightly armoured man had shown no hesitation at throwing himself at two large and ferocious beasts to keep them away from the gnome, that garnered the warforged's admiration.

Spark also nodded his agreement to concluding their adventure at haste.

Santio stood, uneasily at first ... unsure if his previously mauled leg would hold, and still reliving the memory of those 'last moments' quite vividly ...
He brushed himself off, and looked at the torn, blood covered leg.

Looking around, a little confused, he asked "What happened.  The last thing I remember, that ...." but couldn't really put into words where his thoughts went from there.

Either way, when he heard their story, he thanked them all for what they had done for him.
And agreed that they should push on again ... quickly.

Re: [Quest] Third Keenbellow Exploratory Expedition

As they strived to cap off their journey, although with a bit of a solemn twist, Tidelan clapped Santio on the back, albeit probably a little bit too roughly given his condition, and remarked, "You know, I too fell in battle, much moons ago. Our friend Boneclaw did save my life then, too." the Genasi explains in a soft voice just to the monk, "Lukas and I fight more strong when we are both here, because we have both bled in much fights."

The druid looked over to the direwolf and gave a nod of respect that probably seemed out of place to everyone except his current conversation partner, before turning back to Santio, "I believe, it is okay to die in good fight. I am always happy to have Boneclaw and Spark, because they are much good at... I think the words here are, "Watching your back"."

Tidelan smiled at Santio, "I am much happy you live. It was near to being not that. I desire for you to know that if any of us all would die, the others would keep their selves alive until their death!" he was growing more passionate.

Suddenly, Tidelan exclaimed loudly for all to hear with a red face, "That is what it is to be 'Friends'! I can die for my friends with no sadness! If my friends die, I can live with no sadness!"

He settled down, breathing heavily in the cold air... the barbarian seemed a little embarassed, before gathering himself and saying, "When we are back at the town, will we all have a drink?" he was asking the group the question in a weird way, but it was a surprise to nobody that the foreigner still didn't speak this language well.

Boneclaw gave Santio a pat on the shoulder encouraging him and a visible change washes over Santio's body where the wounds start to close up at Boneclaw's magic touch. With that the group found it easier to make the trek and continued onward. Soon they found themselves looking at the familiar sight of the Fierce Hearts village ahead of them. They had made it, mostly in one piece just as the sun was starting to set.

Well done guys you have successfully made it back to the Fierce Hearts village! All that's left is to get back to Smith and get him the new map. You each get 1200xp and 10 downtime units. You will get the 160gp when Smith gets the map. For now please switch over to the Fierce Hearts Village thread for the night and then unless you have questions or interactions you'd like to have with one of the guards or someone from the village you may go straight to morning in Hexia’s Shop thread to make it to the portal and back to Smith's Gambit Town Hall thread. Thank you for your patience I know this quest took a while, but again well done for sticking with it. ^_-
