Re: OOC: Chat

I might be missing something in the Player's handbook, so I'm going to ask. It seems as though intelligence doesn't directly tie into languages learned, so while having extra points in there would be good for my character, it won't grant him extra languages correct?

Secondly, and this is more to the DMs, although if someone else has asked this, feel free to point this out, since my background grants me a secondary language, can I drop that and replace it with another skill? If I've broken any elements of proper decorum  by asking these questions here, my apologies, but this seemed  the best place to ask, since if anyone else already has answers they can chime in.

As always I thank you all for your time.

Re: OOC: Chat

@Eigon

Correct, intelligence in 5th edition does not give you extra languages like it did in 3rd.

Also, backgrounds give two skills, and then some combination of languages and tool proficiencies.

Dropping a language for a tool proficiency is often a-ok (check with the DM, your mileage may vary), dropping a language for a third skill is not.

Re: OOC: Chat

Lukas is correct. As for swapping background languages or tool proficiencies: only if your race, class or background give you multiples of the same proficiency. However, you can still only swap a skill for a skill.

Re: OOC: Chat

So, need some clarification. Odilon just completed a job and has built up some downtime (I keep forgetting to add the extra DT *sad face*) does he have to use that to take a long rest if he wants to regain his spell slots before signing up for another job? If so he has to pay something to stay at the inn?

Thanks!

Re: OOC: Chat

Just like Odilon asked :  )

It's probably been explained elsewhere (sorry...) but how does "one unit of downtime" work ?
Is this enough time to have a long rest before checking out the job board again ?

Re: OOC: Chat

As far as I understand it, downtime is not required for resting.  It can be "spent" between jobs to craft, work, learn new things, etc.

One downtime unit represents 8 hours of work, so a long rest (and subsequent cost of living) is needed for every 16 hours (two units of downtime) of doing something—adventuring or using downtime.  I think.

Re: OOC: Chat

I don't have Xanathar's guide, so what I'm about to ask might be listed in there, but I can't find this in the player's guide or in the DMG, so here comes my question: what is the price of woolen thread? I could give prices on this for previous versions, well, first and second for sure, but since some prices are different from second and 3.5, I'm asking: thanks.

Re: OOC: Chat

Wait spending downtime requires a long rest?

That.. would actually make sense. Erm, i didn't do that and spent 10 then 3 downtime units... i've long rested twice with this character... does this mean I get up to 5+ levels of exhaustion and die retroactively? Because I don't have money to pay for the Inn retroactively, nor did I at the time...?

As for the price of wool thread, i can't find it in the phb either but i googled it and found a supplemental homebrew page that puts 1 lb of wool at 2 silver pieces. I don't really understand how copyright works (or if that website might infringe on it) or if that website has inappropriate content on it, so I won't link the page.

It seems like a good ballpark guess to me, though. Also it says 50 gp could buy 170 fleeces of wool , and a fleece is 1.5 lbs worth 3sp.

I don't know what the cost of thread would be though

Re: OOC: Chat

We won't kill you retroactively. Just reset your materials, potions, and downtime to what it was before you ran out of money.

As for wool thread, unless you are buying huge quantities, the cost is negligible. What do you need it for?

Re: OOC: Chat

In reply to Conspirator (msg # 309):

This is a case of me asking the question early, and we could easily say wool is the same as canvas per yard, but making anything out of cloth is easier if one has thread with which to do it with, and animal hair doesn't make for the best thread, when compared to wool or cotton. Obviously cotton per yard in material, from which thread can be easily enough extracted is listed, but wool is not. So if one wanted to make a blanket, a seat cushion, a wall hanging, or any of a number of cloth objects, the lacking of the most common thread type - - in a medieval European Milieu - - the presence of wool in some form, square yard, or thread would be useful. In first edition a yard of wool was 8 cp, but cotton, as listed is more expensive than it is in 5th edition.

As long as you have enough cloth or leather, we will assume you have enough thread, as well.

I'll be checking on neighbors later to make sure they have everything, since I'm well stocked up, and you know how the stores are. So if they need stuff, odds are good I have it on hand, or something like it.  I'll have to go back to work this evening, because I do data analysis and entry and our office is still open.
