Re: OOC: Chat

So, the Honor Duel thread is up, for Brohm and Lukas' duel. I made it public since its happening right outside of town. If you're between quests or on a patrol, you may consider yourself present for the duel if you wish (especially if its a night patrol.)

I know we're in wibbly wobbly time here, should I think of this as post-night patrol or pre-night patrol?

I imagine post night-patrol for us, given we more or less blew into town and then immediately  signed up for a patrol.

I've played in the wibbly wobbly timey wimey games before and it's often best not to think too hard about it and just enjoy.

I'm going to post in another thread, before moving Brohm to the Honor Duel thread, for continuity of character.

Re: OOC: Chat

Please, how do I apply for this job?
quote:
Under the Moonless Sky

It has come to my attention that some fishmen have begun to prepare a ritual sacrifice on the night of the new moon. They intend to summon a spined devil for reasons unknown. Needless to say, I want this stopped. Should the ritual be completed, be prepared to fight a flying devil who resists non-magical weapons. ~ Erret Smith.

Minimum 1 level 2 combat encounter

Reward: 100 GP, 450 XP, 1 downtime unit, plus loot and xp for any combat. 20 +1 Crossbow bolts to be provided up-front. If the sacrificial victim is be saved, an extra 50 GP, and 100 XP.

I imagine you could track down Erret Smith in town and tell him you want in.
You might need to get a party together though, that flying devil sounds like a nasty problem to deal with.

I can attest that the devil in question would probably be more than a level 3 monk can take on his own.

Will this be a solo job?m Or can Santio sign up as part of a group looking into this?

Also, new to DnD, can you please advise where I learn about 'encounter levels' so I can better judge my character's abilities?

Re: OOC: Chat

You can, and should, recruit a party.

Encounter level, I'm not sure its a proper rules term, but it means the encounter is built for a party of 4-5 characters of that level. You can attempt it at a lower level, or with fewer people, but it would be more difficult. So, if you're a level above the quests encounter level, your presence will make the quest a bit easier. Your most recent group, for example, had three level three characters, and two level ones, which meant, if you hadn't snuck past all the encounters, as level 1 and 2 encounters, they would have been pretty easy, though the level 2 encounters might have posed a serious threat to you and Brohm (if your allies couldn't heal you, anyway.) The upside is higher level encounters are worth far more xp, and often have better loot.

Also, we try to let players know if a quest would be above or below their ability, usually by Smith suggesting you wait for help, or that you're strong enough to go with fewer.

Just remember, none of us can predict whether the dice will go against you. Not too long ago, we had a level 3 Rogue kill a sabertooth tiger before anyone else had a turn.

Also, at low levels, Druids are basically pinatas full of hit points and death, while monks can do more damage per round than anyone's really prepared for, so again, the encounter level can't always be trusted.

I see.  Thanks.

Yes, Santio would like to apply for that job, but he's doing so as a prospective member of any team that is being put together for that job.
Who would he show that interest to, please?

Re: OOC: Chat

FYI from the Monster Manual -

CHALLENGE
Amonster's challenge rating tells you how great a threat the monster is. An appropriately equipped and well-rested party of four adventurers should be able to defeat a monster that has a challenge rating equal to its level without suffering any deaths. For example, a party of four 3rd-level characters should find a monster with a challenge rating of 3 to be a worthy challenge, but not a deadly one.
Monsters that are significantly weaker than 1st-level characters have a challenge rating lower than 1. Monsters with a challenge rating of 0 are insignificant except in large numbers; those with no effective attacks are worth no experience points, while those that have attacks are worth 10 XP each.
Some monsters present a greater challenge than
even a typical 20th-level party can handle. These monsters have a challenge rating of 21 or higher and are specifically designed to test player skill.

Re: OOC: Chat

quote:
Druids are basically pinatas full of hit points and death,

I laughed at how true that is. Druids can be beat to a bloody mess, but never actually make death saves haha.

Not just at lower levels, but throughout most of the game, and especially in the last few levels of the game ha ha.

I mean as a 20th Level Moon Druid, unless you're facing someone with more than 126 DPS (meaning nothing except maybe a Tarrasque that focuses it's legendary actions on you, or a spellcaster burning their high level spells... or a very lucky martial... I mean like two out of four attacks are crits on you, and they still probably burn either Divine Smites or Action Surge, haha), you never lose any real health, as long as you sacrifice a bonus action, which is only useful for spells like Chain Lightning, which are outclassed by the time of 9th level and lower slots.

The only time a Moon Druid is outclassed is against a Wizard with PWK or save-or-suck spells (though, Druids have WIS and INT save proficiency, meaning they are only vulnerable weak to Banishment and Forcecage) or against a party of 3-4 characters of around their same level (which is nuts).

If all else fails, just cast Heal on yourself or planeshift away. Even if your scared of counterspell from an enemy wizard, that's easy to burn for the round before escaping by using an 8th level slot to threaten Feeblemind against them.

I wouldn't be surprised if a 17th level Moon Druid could solo a tarrasque. I mean, they can avoid them and just sling the right spells until it fricking dies. It's not even funny, it's diss-cuss-tang.

Sorry for the rant, Moon Druids seem OP. pls nerf. (just kidding let me play one first before you tell WOTC lol)

Re: OOC: Chat

Moon Druids can be very powerful both early and late game true, but I find they can fall behind and be a bit unsatisfying in the midgame.

So has Brohm drawn first blood and won the honour duel or are they going until unconsciousness or one yields?

Yep. And for most games, those mid-levels are the longest, slowest grind of them all.

Re: OOC: Chat

First to surrender.

Though Brohm somehow is getting a +6 to damage, so Verbannt is probably going to be surrendering real fast. If Verbannt could use his knife and short sword, this would be more evenly matched. Hell if he could Wildshape, it would probably be pretty one sided.

But right now I'm playing around with the build, Rogue 1/Moon Druid 3, the wrong weapons, and no spells, so even with a level advantage I think I'm going to be on the losing end of this.

Re: OOC: Chat

I've literally thought this whole time that dueling meant your other hand had to be empty.

And I've been wrong since 5e came out.

It just says "When you are wielding a melee weapon in one hand and no other weapons, you gain a +2 bonus to damage rolls with that weapon."

That's really cool!
