Letting Nutcracker take the lead, Victor follows close behind the Kenku. The tiefling's greatsword is hanging from his belt, one hand steadying it as they move along.

His breath mists in the air as he scans the area around them, hoping to spot anything that might threaten them while the ranger focuses on getting them travelling in the right direction.

OOC: Don't worry guys, Victor will spot any danger.
17:38, Today: Victor Iusticia rolled 4 using 1d20.  Perception.

Keeping her cool, Carmen followed the others as they headed out to the hunting grounds. This was definitely risky business for the small party, but she had confidence after their last outing that they had what it would take to pull through.

"We've had some luck so far. I've been studying since our last quest and can now cast a sleep spell upon a large number of enemies. It could come in most useful. Does anybody else have any talents they have acquired since then that they should share?"

Victor gestures towards Wendel, "I haven't tried it yet but I'm pretty sure I can conjure that ice armour like you did, that and imbue my blade with flames or the roar of the storm. I might be able to compel someone to do something for a moment, but only if they understand my command."

He frowns briefly, followed by a strange grin, "It's hard to tell what I can do until I do it, the visions I've seen while praying can be confusing. It is reassuring to know that power is within my reach should I prove mighty enough to seize it."

[QUEST] Missing Scouts

It is a nice change of pace, traveling at any time other than night time. Wendel seems to be in high spirits almost having to stop himself from whistling now and then. It's still cold of course but there's something more biting about the cold in darkness. Here, now, it seems almost bearable.

"That's great Victor! It will be a blessing to know you and Lathander have our backs out here. Power seems to come quickly in this cold place..." His thoughts turn inward momentarily before he looks over to Carmen. "Well there's a few things I can do that I couldn't before but mostly it's the same sort of stuff. I don't know if any of you ever got a clear view of my friend here but he's a pretty helpful little fella." There's that rock in his hand that looks pretty much like a rock. Wendel tosses is up and catches it once before pocketing it again.

"It seems our friend the cracker of nuts and arrow slinger has picked up a few friends of his own. Where did all those bees come from Nutcracker? Conjured from nothing or called to arms by your queen-bee-like charm?"

Even as he idly chatters Wendel keeps his eyes on the horizon and their surroundings. Not looking for anything in particular but just trying to be aware.

"Say, after what the chief said back there, I figure it's prudent to ask.. Do any of feel like you'd understand or be able to communicate with the goblins out here if they don't know common? We might have to fall back on rudimentary communication but I can do some very small illusion's in the hand. That coupled with what you can do with illusion, Carmen, might work to get our point across."

"I keep being surprised by how much I can do," adds Chelsie. "I can evidently understand strange languages at times, so I might be able to help understand the goblins. But I haven't figured out how to speak in those languages yet... And then there's this." She takes her staff and outlines a long shape in front of her other hand. A glimmering rapier appears there; it is delicate, light, and perfectly balanced as she takes a few swings with it.

She keeps up with the others, trying to stay near the middle of the group.

Catching up with the rest, Nutcracker heard the question of skills that could help out along the way. Much like in town, he conjured up a brief flash of weather prediction for the journey. Aside from that, the presence of the blue bees using him as a rest between flights seemed explanation enough. "Bees are a sign of a healthy forest," he said in that jovial contrabass.

Checking the map provided, he got his bearings and began leading the party on the start of their journey. He was excited, but still cautious because of the unknown dangers that could be lurking anywhere.

[QUEST] Missing Scouts

Nutcracker leads the group, his ranger training allowing him to pick the shortest paths and guide the rest of you confidently through terrain that would slow others down. You make it halfway to the hunting grounds before you begin to tire. As you begin deciding where you will set up camp, you spot a small cave opening, with large pawprints in the snow around it. Just then, the head of a huge owl pokes out and looks around, noticing you. Its huge round eyes bear a malice owls are not capable of, but then, the body that propels the head in your direction at high speeds isn't that of an owl... you've stumbled into the territory of an owlbear!

Roll initiative, and if you go before the Owlbear, you can post your first turn's action along with it.

Victor is quick to move forward to engage the creature, opting to draw his glaive over the greatsword in order to keep the thing at a distance.

A hot pressure suddenly seems to emanate from the tiefling, an aura of palpable murderous threat that may be enough to raise the hairs on one's arms or the back of the neck as a nearby ally and could be terrifying for foes.

Chelsie sees the strange beast, and takes a moment to collect her thoughts. Victor rushes forward to intimidate the owlbear, and all she can think is she wants to block the creature's charge. Instinctively, Chelsie begins to recite an incantation she's never said before. She points her staff at the owlbear as she steps behind Victor, and a sphere of flame appears.

Initiative: 5
Action: Casts flaming sphere, positioning it at least 10 ft. away from Victor and no more than 5 ft. away from the owlbear. E5
The owlbear must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw, taking 8 fire damage on a failed save or 4 fire damage on a successful save.
(The sphere deals damage to all within 5 ft. So if Victor closed to within 10 ft. of the owlbear, then I place it in the owlbear's space; if Victor is more than 10 ft. from the owlbear, I place it directly in front of the owlbear to encourage it to turn around.)
Movement: Forward to maybe 10 ft. behind Victor, trying to add to the intimidation factor. E12

Big owl! Big bear owl! Owlbear! There really wasn't going to be an easy way out of this situation since they had managed to come across its den without seeing any other tracks. Just the way the world worked sometimes. Seeing as how it wasn't going to understand anything other than force, Nutcracker pulled his bow and fired a shot, complete with bee escort, impacting nearly into the creature's head. At the same time the bee escort crashed into the beast with their spectral stingers.

OOC: Side move to have a clear shot without swinging too wide.
Attacking the owlbear with longbow, Favored Foe, additional swarm damage.

With everyone else looking ready to put down this strange creature, Wendel joins in the fray. With his more commonly heard Terran incantation summoning the beam of force swirling with sand and stone to blast at the bear owl hybrid creature, he throws his air punch at the creature but something about this instance feels off. His beam goes wide.

Carmen moves forward and fires a blast, which strikes the creature a solid blow!
Nutcracker moves to get a clear shot and shoots the owlbear in the neck, a swarm of bees following the arrow.
Victor moves forward, and suddenly the owlbear stops in its tracks!
Wendel fires his own blast, but he didn't expect his target to stop so suddenly, and led it too much.
Chelsie moves behind Victor, and conjures a floating sphere of some magical burning material next to the owlbear, which burns the monster's fur and feathers
The owlbear, struggling with an unfamiliar feeling, lets out a loud roar/hoot hybrid, much to Nutcracker's delight, I'm sure. It glares at Victor, to afraid to come closer, but too stubborn to retreat. It waits for the next attack (it takes the dodge action, so all attacks against it have disadvantage.)

"If it backs down, we can probably just let it be and pass by," adds Chelsie. She holds her sphere in place, and points her staff at the owlbear in preparation for any new aggression.

Action: Readied eldritch blast vs. any owlbear that charges towards the party (hits AC 6 for 10 force damage, lol).
Amended Action: Dodge.
Concentration: Flaming sphere (round 2 of 10).
  • If the owlbear doesn't move or otherwise ends its turn within 5 ft. of the sphere, it will have to make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw, taking 2d6 fire damage on a failed save or half damage on a successful save.

OOC: I'm hoping it just heads into the cave, with the sphere encouraging that outcome. But the readied blast should definitely miss. I'm dodging, as I'd rather not kill this thing if it backs away, and there's not much else to do while concentrating on the spell. Thank you, Wendel.

Carmen readies to fire a blast if the owlbear continues to attack. (remember, when you ready an attack, you're supposed to roll it when you declare it, unless you want me to roll it for you.)
Nutcracker casts a spell to communicate with animals, but it doesn't seem to respond. (You don't have to state that you're maintaining concentration, but it's nice to have the reminder!)
Victor moves back, and readies to swing his glaive if it moves in to attack.
Wendel moves up and fires a weak blast, striking the Owlbear in the shoulder.
Chelsie prepares to dodge if the creature tries to attack her
The owlbear, having shrugged off the fear, moves around the flaming sphere, and tries to attack Victor. Victor slashes it with his glaive, wounding it horribly, while Carmen's blast misses. The owlbear pecks and claws at Victor, but it fails to get past his defenses. (BTW, Victor, there is no penalty for using a glaive on adjacent opponents, in case you're unaware.)

Greatsword attack hits AC 14 for 10 slashing damage.

I know there is no penalty for using the glaive up close, I'm just RPing him having to experiment with different fighting styles and ranges. When we get back to Smith's Gambit Victor will have arrived at the conclusion that his war training with the greater weapons isn't as effective as he'd like and he will opt for a longsword and shield instead :)

[QUEST] Missing Scouts

Such a majestic - and violent - beast, it was saddening that it had to be killed in this way. If only Nutcracker had been a better scout and saw the signs he possibly could have avoided this. But it may have been for the better. Whatever was in the cave would ultimately decide if this was benevolent or tragic.

With the danger passed, it would be a good time to set up camp for the night and they could make it to the grounds tomorrow. He could occupy his mind finding food and water while the camp was being set.

Wendel follows the others in their decision making. He agrees with Victor about the potential waste but has nothing to offer as a solution. As for exploring the den, they might as well if they were to both learn more and potentially find a place to settle in.

The cave doesn't go very deep, but it opens up a bit past the mouth. There's just enough room that you could line your tents against the back wall, and be completely covered in darkness. In the lantern light, you see no signs of humanoid victims. The creature likely made this its den sometime after the hunting party last passed through.

With the cave shown to be nothing more than a small location that would fit their tents and no surprises, Nutcracker dropped off his tent and set out to track down food and water for the night. "I beg yer pardon," came Smith's voice, "a tent," now it was Jessop. "Please." That last one wasn't a voice from around these parts, nor was it the usual contrabass. Someone from another part of the world or on the boat?

OOC: Using 'Wanderer' background feature to find food and water for 5 for the night.

"I'm as concerned about the cold of the night as its darkness, so I'd rather camp for the night and keep going in the morning." Chelsie sets down her things and stretches her muscles after a long day of traveling.

"But should we start a fire, or might that be too much of a beacon to whatever's taken those hunters?"

OOC: I'm not keen to regain exhaustion! Not until there's a more urgent reason, anyway. Also, I assume we need to set up watches, and Chelsie's not picky about which shift to take.

Victor moves to set up Nutcracker's tent along with his own, talking with the others while he does so.

"Exhausting ourselves in the cold and dark is not wise until we have more information. A fire just outside for whoever is on watch is a good idea, Chelsie, the warmth will be needed and while a number of us can see in the dark being able to see further is better."

He looks up from fiddling with the tent canvas, "Once I am finished with this I will take the first watch, if there is anything out there that might be drawn to fire then I will be able to deal with it in my armour or wake you all if needed. I just need to know who I am waking up when I am done and will need their help in doffing my chainmail."

As Nutcracker returns with the food, you all hear wingbeats. Above you, you see a monstrous creature: It has a vaguely human face, but with rows of sharp teeth, the body of a white tiger, and the wings of a dragon. A mane of spines runs from its head to the tip of its long, powerful tail. It says, "lay down your weapons and surrender, and I'll kill you quickly!"

As he does so he sends a thought to his new friend who finally reveals themself. A tiny creature seemingly made of sand and shadow peaks up and out of Wendel's pocket where he had put the rock he'd taken to carrying around. It's face, if you can call it a face, seems like an empty mask with neo-primordial sigils scrawled across it. [QUEST] Missing Scouts

Chelsie stands up for Victor, healing him again, and readies to blast the creature again.
Nutcracker fires another shot with his bow, missing (bless was inactive, because Victor had lost his concentration!)
Victor taunts the monster back, and renews his bless spell.
Carmen readies another blast.
Wendel calls out for the others to join him in the cave, as he readies another blast.
Gritt enjoys the ride.
The monster sneers and to Victor "Listen to your little friend, fiend-spawn! Go hide in the cave!" and moves forward again. As it does, the three warlocks launch their blasts again. This time, all but Wendel hit. It continues launching tail spikes at Victor! The first hits for 9 piercing damage, the second once again hits the tree, and the third hits the snow near Chelsie! After firing, it flies upward, once more.

Nutcracker 16
Victor 14
Carmen 8

The monster is 125 feet off the ground. It has taken 50 damage.

Bonus Action: Healing Light to heal Victor for 4 HP.

Once again waiting for the right moment Wendel speaks, clenches his fist ignoring the arthritic feeling of continually abusing his body with an energy that didn't want to course through him... Regardless he pushes the feeling aside and waits for the right moment.

Readied action: Eldritch Blast AC 22 for 6 force and 2 Bludgeoning. Right when it looks like the creature will attack. (Trying to push it 10ft back with Repelling Blast to throw off it's strike)

This fight was getting repetitive with that creature's ability to fly up and out of the reach of the others. Victor likely wasn't going to be able to take much more of the getting shot thing by all the spines. Getting himself closer, Nutcracker took aim for what seemed like a soft spot and hoped it would fell this creature. This time his focus held and the bees spiraled around the arrow as it took to the creature's underside.

Tearing the next spike from his body, he lays his hand on the wounds and watches as the warm white light knits his flesh back together.

Instead of moving back towards the cave, seeing Nutcracker rush forward, Victor ducks around the spike peppered tree he had been trying to shield himself with and moves ahead to another, calling out, "You are a terrible aim, one in three? With performance issues like that no wonder you don't have a mate!"

While outwardly showing bravado and apparently completely unharmed due to Chelsie's administrations, Victor knows that he is getting tired. Still, he has faith in his companions.

Re: [QUEST] Missing Scouts

Chelsie readies another blast, heals Victor some more and moves for cover
Nutcracker fires another shot with his bow, hitting, and his bees swarm the creature, stinging it viciously!
Victor heals himself, and continues to taunt the monster.
Carmen readies another blast.
Wendel grits his teeth against the pain, and readies another blast.
The creature says, "You creatures aren't worth it!" and flies away!

Congratulations! You each get 140xp!

After dashing 100 feet, it's 225 feet away. If Nutcracker gives chase, and fires each round, it would take 5 turns to get out of longbow range, so I'm just gonna call it here and grant full XP. If you gave chase, you finished it off, and the body landed in a tree nearby with a loud crash, scaring any wildlife away. You can rest safely. Otherwise, it gets away, uses its remaining tail spikes to hunt things that can't shoot back, and you can still rest safely.

Re: [QUEST] Missing Scouts

With the creature taking off, Nutcracker decided to give chase. Whatever this was it was dangerous to everything around. It was quite malicious and did not belong in an area where other people would come through. When at last it fell with a crash into a tree, the kenku went about removing it as to not be some grim frozen sculpture until the carrion eaters took care of it. Plus it might have some useful parts that might be salvageable; much like the owlbear.

OOC: Giving chase and checking for parts that can be harvested for use. Tigerskin-pattern leather, spikes, claws, etc. Anything.

Carmen had also given chase, but her own ranged attacks are too short to affect the monster. She does watch in satisfaction as "The Nuts' manages to get a half-decent shot on the creature though, and as it crashes into the ground she can't help but feel pleased that the threat to life is now over for so many creatures. Perhaps the area will flourish in its absence.

"Let's finish up, get cleaned up and return to our rest." she suggests.

After all the excitement Wendel finds peace for a short while as he sleeps until woken by Victor for his watch. He helps the tiefling doff his armor and looks out at the remains of the owlbear that the wolves had taken advantage of. Shuddering slightly he takes up his watch with Gritt beside running around in near the entrance of the cave around the fire up to a tree and back all the while seemingly unbothered by the elements it called home. Though the others didn't see it, Wendel spent most of his watch time smiling at his tiny friend's antics. Most.

OOC: Everyone had one 1 hour 40 minute watch each - Victor, Wendel, Chelsie, Nutcracker, Carmen - in that order.

After carving up the creature in an oddly bountiful harvest of parts, Nutcracker bundled the various parts into the skin and tied with his hempen rope securely. Because there was an abundance of sudden lumber, he chopped up what he could to be used for the fire and carried it to the cave before settling into his tent to sleep before his watch.

The second to last watch was an awkward one, but this felt much more normal for the ranger than sleeping in that padded bed at the inn before his first mission. Carmen had decided that waking up a little early to see the sun come up was a good idea. Did she think it wouldn't come up unless it was watched? Strange person. "You look beautiful as ever today," came her own voice.

Packing up camp, Nutcracker saw to it that any leftover wood was properly stacked inside the cave for future use by anyone who sought shelter there. The wolves had taken care of the remains of the owlbear and likely what was left of the creature a short distance away. It would have been nice to have both of the pelts for possible use, but nothing was going to rot.

After filling himself with forage and securing his gear, Nutcracker consulted the map again, gained his bearings, and checked the weather with his bees.

Aw, hugs are nice. But it didn't do much to keep the ranger from thinking the warlock was a little on the strange side. Must be something that happens with dealing with otherworldly beings. The irony of such a thought from one who frequently had associated with fey creatures was - indeed - totally lost on Nutcracker. Much like a bird, he could only cock his head to the side in contemplation. Thinking was hard; action was good.

Not having an instrument to play nor an easy way to share stories while tracking, Nuts settled on repeating some music from more mellow times in the woods, with the occasional break for breath. Satyrs liked to party, but they liked to relax as well. He really liked when they were around. Less rigid than the centaurs.

Re: [QUEST] Missing Scouts

Having put her flute away for now, Carmen was overhearing the conversation between Victor and Chelsie. It was a trait she had picked up as a hunter of villains, to listen in on any information that might become useful at a later date. She pondered over the name Larazel and the details of the order that Chelsie had named.

All the while, she looked ahead with Nutcracker, wondering how the large bird creature made sense of all of the sounds that it heard. "You must have very good instincts." she said to the Kenku. "I have yet to figure out how you make sense of it all." she said, shaking her head. It was a talent that she would very much like to have.

Would the skilled tracker know how to interpret the different swear words correctly? She had heard a few in the tavern already. Could it only imitate the exact way the words had been spoken? She felt herself chuckling a little. Imagine if all it had ever heard were angry words, or words of desperation. The kenku must be extremely intelligent to put it all together, and she had to wonder if it would cut and assemble words from multiple speakers.

It wasn't doing her listening game any good thinking about all of this. She set her mind to eavesdropping again, trying to figure out why the name Larazel sounded so familiar to her....

Re: [QUEST] Missing Scouts

Victor nods at Chelsie's comments before replying to her questions, "One of my shieldbrothers and I found an old text deep in one of the long abandoned archives of our order. It outlined a series of events that occurred between our god Lathander and one of his most trusted solars. Along with her teachings, it described a series of principals and orders that Lathander gave this solar which had not been canonically taught within the core dogma of our religion."

He grimaces, sucking air through his teeth slightly before continuing, "While we both believed  that this new narrative radically changes things, I had a hard time convincing Adris to come with me to show the head of our order."

He sighs heavily, "Long story short, the two of us were declared heretics and expelled from the Khoprian order but before they could destroy the text I stole it and fled. I later found out that things went worse for Adris. While I was still a just a novitiate in training he was a full fledged knight. He was formally denounced as an Oathbreaker for helping me escape even though he had nothing to do with it."

The tiefling shrugs, "So I am here to build my strength and hopefully find others mighty enough to join her in the fight to end the need for devils to harvest mortal souls for their Blood War. I could prattle on for hours about it but really you only have to read the text to understand the importance of Saint Zariel's task."

He smiles toothily, his pointed canines clearly visible but not threatening, "This place has an abundance of potential powerful allies, many whose potency seems to grow with every passing week."

Re: [QUEST] Missing Scouts

Nutcracker follows the trail for another hour, noticing the forest getting increasingly quiet as you go further. All is silent as you reach a point where the hunters' tracks meet some very strange tracks (nature check to identify.) From there, the tracks stop, but there are drag-marks leading from there. There is, notably, almost no blood in the snow, but there is a fair amount of an unidentified, thick blue fluid, leading in the same way as the drag-marks (also nature check.)

Re: [QUEST] Missing Scouts

Carmen was just full of questions that Nutcracker wasn't immediately prepared to answer. Not having a voice of his own was indeed a curse and his limited mental faculties were already taxed with tracking down the missing hunters. Not that he was stupid, just not as sharp as the arrows in his quiver. More like the fletched end: feathered and blunt.

Trying to find words to explain would have to wait for the moment as a change in the tracks had come up. It was a definite lead, but what was it leading to? Letting out a snowy owl's hoot to catch everyone's attention, Nutcracker pointed to the drags and the blue stuff. The lack of blood was both good and bad, but he wasn't sure which one outweighed the other.

OOC: No proficiency in Nature, just seeing if anything rings a bell in his empty head.

Re: [QUEST] Missing Scouts

The tracks seemed to belong to about four large (as in, much bigger than you) arthropods, but Nutcracker couldn't tell what kind. With that in mind, the blue stuff kind of reminded him of bug guts. Whatever it was that leaked the goo, the hunters hurt it more than it hurt them... and it still lived to help drag them away

As he looked at the tracks, cocking his head this way and that to try to make better sense of them, Nutcracker made all manner of insect noises as though the sound might help spark a thought - crickets, swarming bees, cicada, all manner of insects - but nothing really brought anything new to mind.

He dipped a clawed finger into the blue stuff to see if it was still recent and made ready to follow the tracks.

OOC: Ready to make another Survival check, but not sure if the map will help out at this point, so didn't want to roll with advantage unless I have it.

[QUEST] Missing Scouts

Carmens questions went unanswered. She didn't mind, as it looked like the Nuts was doing his job as tracker and needed the brainspace to calculate the right direction to head in. Victor and Chelsie seemed to be hitting it off, both on the same page religiously in some sense. Wendel had been quiet though...he often thought about his sisters wellbeing, so perhaps Luna hadn't been feeling too well of late.

Keeping her thoughts to herself, Carmen followed as the Nuts pursued their quarry.

Even when Victor had tried to draw him out momentarily by making his comment about having a chance, Wendel had indeed stayed fairly quiet. Introspective even, whatever it was that was on his mind was enough to keep him withdrawn from any conversation. Once their resident tracker, Nutcracker, started doing his thing though Wendel cam out of his reverie at least enough to start casting glances around at their surroundings. So much had already passed by without his paying attention and now he worried if he ever got separated from the others he'd be lost for good out here. Lost and alone. Mostly alone.

But that hadn't happened yet. The others were here and doing what they had been sent out here to do. Track down the missing folks.

With Gritt climbing up onto his shoulder and helping point things out a little bit Wendel started watching for anything off that the others might not see.

As Nutcracker followed the trail, Wendel looked around. After awhile, he noticed, on the forest floor ahead, a glint, that as you all got a bit closer (about 100 feet) he recognized as giant spider webs. Among them, he spots a large spider, partially hidden. Nutcracker knows, where there's one giant spider, there are usually more not far...

Wendel was sure glad to be surrounded by such competent individuals. How quick they all responded after he and Nutcracker noticed the spider. With Nutcracker's gesture to halt, the half elf did just that, Gritt nearly falling off his shoulder as he did so. He did not wince or let out a sharp little yelp when the tiny little rocky creature grabbed his hair to keep it's balance...

Instead, full of composure, he raised his fists ready to send a punch of stoney energy at the spider when everybody else began acting. The spider, noticing the party has spotted it, retreats further into the webbing.
Nutcracker, realizes these trees wouldn't be a good place for a spider that size to hide, but checks for smaller ones anyway. Glancing on the forest floor, he sees no sign of any other spiders, but confirms that what appeared to be thick snow covering the underbrush is indeed, webbing, several feet deep. Enough for a large spider to hide in, if it wished.
Victor, moved ahead and looked for any other threats, but he could barely even see the spider that had been pointed out to him!
Wendel, moved up behind a tree and prepared to blast any foes that come too close to allies.
Carmen, the same.
Chelsie draws a rapier and readies to blast any spider that approaches.

The thick blanket of webbing on the ground was disturbing to the kenku - and his bees. Though of course they were intangible; until they weren't. But the missing hunters could be under there as Carmen suggested. Likely more spiders under there as well. There had to be some way to safely flush any of them out without risking harm to anyone in there - provided there were any there and not deeper in.

Getting a better vantage point would be best, so repositioning took priority as Nutcracker moved to look for a clearer shot.

Seeing as the spider was just sort of dancing around back there and not going on the offensive, something on the nape of Wendel's neck tickled. Maybe it was Gritt moving around and finding new perches or maybe it was something else causing him to worry that they might be walking into an attack. Whatever it was there was an easy, well not so easy target back in those webs and letting it get away seemed like a bad idea...

Wendel moved up to the next tree, clenched his fist, ignoring the all to familiar feeling of pain as he forced the genies power through his rocky air punch again speaking the terran incantation to try to slam the spider and pull it this way again. Another thought sent to his tiny friend had Gritt refocusing, trying so hard not to be distracted by this wonderful wonderful strangeness that was the webbing.

Re: [QUEST] Missing Scouts

Confident that there were no more spiders in hiding when the one finally fell, Nutcracker put his bow away and approached the edge of the webs. Chelsie was calling out if there was anyone below the webs while Victor was poking at them with a stick. Was fire still out? Probably not a good idea. Crouching down, he looked for any possible sign of anything beneath the webs - be it bodies or even something resembling a way through.

[QUEST] Missing Scouts

The butt of Victor's glaive sticks to the web. He will need a DC 12 Str Check to rip it free (with advantage, because its only the end of the glaive.)

As he struggles, an incredibly well hidden spider revealed itself, firing sticky strands of webbing from its abdomen at Nutcracker! Nutcracker is restrained by webbing. As an action, he can make a DC 12 Strength check, bursting the webbing on a success. The webbing can also be attacked and destroyed (AC 10; hp 5; vulnerability to fire damage; immunity to bludgeoning, poison, and psychic damage).

New initiative! If you beat an 18, post your first round actions!

With the new spider making it's presence known, Wendel hesitated for the briefest of moments. Gritt however, lacked any hesitation. Leaping from Wendel's shoulder to the tree and down to the ground in one quick almost adorably acrobatic move he toddled over to the next tree near to where Nutcracker had just been caught. For just a moment it looked like he was going to reach out and grab the sticky stuff he appeared to be fascinated with but at the last moment his tiny appendage diverted to a point on the Kenku that was not covered.

Wendel stepped out from behind his tree and fired off his own blast at the spider, trying to push it back a little. It seemed unhampered by its webbing and who knew what it could do if it got close enough to then to do more than just web them all up, which was already concerning on its own... He looked over at Nutcracker and then gave Gritt a nod.

For Gritts part, the tiny creature watched Nutcracker struggle and fail to break the webs which elicited and miniscule head shake and droop from Gritt. Another small surge of energy as Gritt touched the birdman again.

Carmen blasts the spider as soon as she can react, rocking it with a powerful blow!
Not to be outdone, Wendel sends his rocky blast, hitting even harder, though some of the force was absorbed by the spider being knocked back 10 feet!
Victor pulls his glaive free of the webs, and moves to help Nutcracker.
Chelsie finishes off the spider with a blast of her own.

Congrats! You taught that spider not to mess with a trio of warlocks! Or, you would have, if it had survived! You each get another 40xp!

If you take your time, you can clear the webs square by square by attacking with anything other than bludgeoning, poison, or psychic damage. (AC 10; hp 5) You'd be able to spot any cocooned humanoids once any squares between you and them were cleared, so if you don't use fire, they should be fine.

If it hadn't been for Victor's assistance, Nutcracker might have rolled himself into a cocoon FOR the spiders on his own. Fortunately the rest of the group had dealt with it before he could be considered a meal. "Well! That was a new one, for me at least," it was Chelsie's voice this time.

Once out of the sticky webs and cleaning himself off from any remnants, Nuts joined in the cutting away of the webs with his axe. If there were any survivors beneath the webs they would certainly find them.

Re: [QUEST] Missing Scouts

As you clear the webs, Gritt tugs excitedly on Wendel's hair, and points to a trail of blue goo, covered by the newest layer of webs. Of course, with Gritt standing on Wendel's shoulder, it's everyone but Wendel who sees where the little guy is pointing. Every time Wendel turns to look, his little buddy puts his arm down to avoid poking him in the eye! The trail leads to roughly the center of the area, and after about 20 minutes clearing the webs to follow the trail, you find a tunnel opening, about 5 feet in height and width. About 15 feet in, the tunnel turns sharply to the right. A thin layer of web makes the tunnel difficult terrain, but its not enough to get you stuck. The trail leads inside.

[QUEST] Missing Scouts

Chelsie moves forward enough to see what's attacking Carmen, and looses a blast of white and gold energy at it. Then she targets Carmen herself with a wave of healing energy.

Action: Cast eldritch blast at E1, hitting AC 22 for 10 force damage.
Bonus Action: Healing Light to Carmen, I'm going to wait until the OOC discussion is finished to see how hurt Carmen is before deciding how many d6s to spend.
Movement: Chelsie will stay back for now, call it E31, so someone else can easily get past her.
09:40, Today: Chelsie Primrose rolled 22,10 using 1d20+5,1d10+3.  Eldritch blast attack, damage.

There’s no question as to whether I will be using Shield or not by the way. The only thing I’m wondering is if the attack that was a web would miss, and if doing so it meant that there was no crit due to having no advantage.

Reacting just in the nick of time, the webs spray past Carmen and land beside her at the wall. Her shield spell that had been hastily whipped up had helped her avoid the debilitating attack and also those of the abberation in front of her. Retaliating with her spear, Carmen missed badly but her curse on the creature still held up.

[QUEST] Missing Scouts

Only just peaking around the corner to see Carmen survive a flurry of activity, Wendel looked at Gritt who looked at Wendel and gave a little mini airpunch like he expected him to start blasting. Meanwhile the tiny familiar started up his own miniature somatic movements focusing on something deeper in the cave. Shortly after, the sound of a small animal seemingly in distress could be heard right behind the baddie that just tried to obliterate Carmen. As that happened Wendel punched the air trying to aim a blast right over his companion's shoulder. Unfortunately, in such a tight space as this it was harder to aim than usual. As he stepped back he almost bumped into Chelsie, muttered an apology, one of the first things he had said in a while, and moved back further.

Gritt:
Move: None, stay on wendel's shoulder
Action: Druidcraft - You create an instantaneous, harmless sensory effect, such as falling leaves, a puff of wind, the sound of a small animal, or the faint odor of skunk. The effect must fit in a 5-foot cube.

Move: To get enemy in view

 Move: Back behind chelsie/around corner

Attack will likely miss unless enemy AC is 11 since I imagine Carmen is granting half cover.

[QUEST] Missing Scouts

Chelsie steps in and blasts the creature that Carmen is holding at bay, then ducks back into the tunnel.
Gritt creates the sound of a distressed animal behind the unknown creature, distracting it momentarily. Wendel seizes the moment, firing a blast, but it goes wide, as Carmen and the creature's own movements make lining up a shot quickly difficult (OOC: I rolled advantage for you, thanks to Gritt's spell. Missed anyway.) BTW, due to the difficult terrain, you can't move in front of Chelsie and back, but you can fire from behind her before ducking around the corner.
Victor grants Carmen a shield of divine magic, less potent, but longer lasting than the one she herself can cast. Then he attempts to slash at the monster in front of her, but in the close quarters, its difficult.
Nutcracker moves in and attempts to shoot the creature, but his shot deflects harmlessly off of the shield of magic surrounding Carmen's skin. (OOC: She is indeed providing cover, but attacks that miss their target won't hurt her. Also note that you don't have sufficient movement to return behind Chelsie, due to the difficult terrain imposed by the webs.)
Carmen hexes her foe, and attempts to skewer it, but all the attacks whizzing past her head and bouncing off of her are very distracting.
Unable to fire their webs again, yet, the spiders climb the walls, out of sight.

Re: [QUEST] Missing Scouts

With Chelsie dissapearing from in front of them, there was one fewer bodies between Wendel and the creature trying to get at Carmen. The little half elf was glad somebody as capable as she was holding the front line and seemingly doing it well enough to survive this thing's onslaught. He felt a tug on his hair as Gritt did a quick turn on his shoulder while maintaining hold. The little guy was looking around again watching for anything that might come in behind them, or for anything else further in that might be waiting to surprise them... again. Regardless of what the familiar discovered Wendel continued to throw his stoney air punches from the back line. Moments before Victor's request to push back the creature Wendel was already thinking along those lines and he put a little more umph into his earthen blast trying desperately to push it back into the cave and open things up a little more for everyone else.

Gritt:
Action: Perception 26 (Blindsight out to 60' if that effects anything)

Wendel
 Move: E31
Action: Eldritch Blast E1 AC 26 for 2 Force and 2 Bludgeoning

Chelsie's move created only slightly more room to act, but it was still very crowded in the corridor with the weird creature holding things up. It was going to be tricky, but Nutcracker attempted to hit the creature with a shot and have the bees give it a good, hard, push to see if they could open up the area. If not, this was going to be a much slower battle and the hunters may be more at risk.

OOC: If the bow attack hits, E1 needs to make a STR Save DC 10 or be pushed back 15' and takes 11 damage.

Chelsie vanishes in a cloud of mist, appearing on the other side of the foe. She notices the giant spider on the wall next to her just in time to dodge its attack! She moves further into the chamber, confident that the spider's reactions are not quick enough to respond to her movement. She raises her blade, prepared for the spiders to attack...
Gritt notices the spiders locations. Wendel fires another blast at the bipedal monstrosity, pushing it back!
Victor steps past Carmen and slashes the thing, wounding it!
Nutcracker fires once again, his bees following the arrow as it sails through the narrow gap between Victor and Carmen, past the creature, and whizzes past Chelsie!
Carmen, moves up and stabs the thing with her spear. It is badly injured!
The abomination retaliates at Carmen with a bite and its claw. The bite hits AC 22 for 4 piercing damage, 1 poison damage. Carmen must succeed on a DC 11 Constitution saving throw or be poisoned for 1 minute. She can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of her turns, ending the effect on herself on a success. The claw critically hit for 6 slashing damage!
The Spider on Carmen's left tries to bite her, but the she takes cover behind the wall.

On second thought, shooting and missing would be really bad if a shot made it to the back of the cave...

Instead of another shot in the still crowded path, Nutcracker tried one of his newfound abilities. Focusing on a point he could see just behind the creature, the kenku sent a swarm of bees into the area to hinder their enemies. Hopefully, anyway, this whole magic thing was still pretty new and it didn't always work the way he thought it would.

OOC: Casting Faerie Fire at the intersection between E & F and 24 & 25 because 20' cube. Should be enough to hit all three of the enemies and none of the allies. Dex Save DC 10 to avoid being lit up in blue bee lights.

A crackling darkness emanates from the fallen enemy as it bolsters the life of the warlock. Carmen steps in and attempts to hit the giant spider, but her aim is awkward and as she is attempting to dash back inside she finds the range of her spear is slightly misjudged. It hits empty air space for her attack.

"So, uh, how are we doing in there?" Wendel peaks around the corner after seeing the flash of light. He steps up right behind Nutcracker trying to see what he can over the Kenku's shoulder. With the one that had been putting the hurt on Carmen down, all that Wendel knows is left are the spiders. But they are at difficult angles to see... As he cocks back with a readied blast, Gritt leans down and ruffles Nutcracker's feathers.

The curse of being shorter than everyone else meant Nutcracker could not see what was going on past the two heavily armored allies in front of him. However, as one of the enemies fell the corridor became less crowded and he could get a slightly better view of what was going on.

How bow wasn't going to do much good if a missed shot might hit something he didn't mean to hit. Following the example he had seen Victor do (and not having fully thought it through), he dropped his bow as he moved up, grabbed up Victor's now dropped glaive, and moved out to try to help in the cramped fight.

Chelsie's thrust misses the spider, but her wounds glow momentarily as the begin to close.
Grit waits for Nutcracker to be within reach.
Wendel moves behind Nutcracker, and has he does, Grit bolsters his resistance. Wendel readies to fire an eldritch blast, but he doesn't get a clear shot.
Victor drops his glaive and draws his greatsword as he runs up to swing at a giant spider. He stumbles slightly over the body of the fallen creature, throwing off his aim enough for the spider to dodge.
Nutcracker drops his bow and picks up Victor's glaive, running up to the nearest spider, and missing with the weapon he hasn't used since his time in training, as he slips out of reach just in time to avoid its retaliatory attack.
Carmen draws strength from her foe's death, and attacks the spider on the wall. She misses!
The Spider on Carmen's left tries to bite her, again, but it misses!
The other spider tries to bite Chelsie again, but fares no better than its partner.

Now that Nutcracker and interposed himself between the spider and her opening, Carmen had little space to work with. That was fine by her, as the spear could easily slip between the spaces with a simple thrust, and that tactic is what scored her first opening hit on the spider that was desperately trying to kill her.

Wendel nods. Gritt by way of tugging a little on Wendel's hair, urges the half elf forward in apparent excitement as he eaves his tiny fist in the general direction of where the big spiders are on the other side of the cave walls. "And Chelsie? Anyone have eyes on Chelsie?"

Wendel pushes forward until he's closer to the others right as Gritt tries to get a sense of their surroundings again.

With slightly better direction and angle for his beam Wendel forces out another blast. With gritt tugging on him and a slight panic setting in the beam doesn't come anywhere close to the intended targets.

Grit can see part of the spider facing Chelsie, and he senses the one near Carmen. He also has no trouble locating Wendel's friends.
Wendel fires an Eldritch blast, but Grit's tugging causes it to harmless impact with the wall as he asks about Chelsie's condition.
Victor answers Wendel as he cleaves the spider in two, then moves to the opposite side of the remaining spider.
Nutcracker stood his ground and fruitlessly tried to slash the spider with Victor's glaive.

"I can't keep up these blasts..." Wendel nurses his arm, splotched with bruising at this point, "Sorry guys." He pulls out his dagger as his eyes roll briefly toward Gritt who seems to be ready to help in some way. Together they squeeze past Carmen and get a better look at the remaining spider.

Gritt turns his tiny head this way and that and seems to be grinning despite the lack of a mouth on his visage. His little hand darts out while the other keeps hold of Wendel's hair. One small stony finger pokes the spider in one of its eyes. Wendel quickly follows up by jabbing his dagger toward the creature. As he does a bit of sand and rocks seem to swirl out from the ring on his finger and surround the hilt of the blade. The rocks punch out just before the blade pierces.

"I hope they're alright. We're thinking those are the hunters right?"

At first he starts to move that way but stops as his feet brush up against the corpse of the humanoid-esque spider creature that had been felled. Curious he leans down for a closer look. There was little enough Wendel could do at this point. So he did what he could. A few feet at a time he started clearing this cave of the spiders webs. Gritt was happy to point out spots he missed. As the half elf cleared, the little stony guy kept his senses peeled looking for other books and crannies thought the cave.

Gritt Blindsight 60'
Passive Perception 17
Active Perception 15
Wendel rolled 15 using 1d20+7.  Gritt perception.

Wendel clearing webs systematically. However long that would take.

Victor doesn't delay, moving to this 'Jebor' and laying his hands on him to remove this paralysing poison.

Producing another waterskin from his pack he helps them take a few sips of water and, when they seem ready to support themselves, moves to a third member of the scouting party to restore them. He pulls out a third and final waterskin to aid them as well.

Turning to Jebor the tiefling says, "Don't rush yourself, but when you are able please do what you can for the other two. If you cannot help them it will be many hours before I have the reserves to aid them as I have with you."

He watches as his allies make movements to secure this place and cleanse it of the webbing.

"It won't be long before an area is cleared enough for a small fire to warm you, I have a couple of blankets as well."

Seeing Victor reviving most of the hunters and the need for supplies, Nuts set down his pack with bedroll and tent with the remaining Goodberries on top. Along with the camping supplies were two additional waterskins if they were needed.

Meanwhile, he went back to checking the cave and clearing webbing with his handaxe. What webbing was accumulating he was piling out of the way to mitigate fire risk. To help fill the time and silent void, he began mimicking the flute sounds Carmen had been making while they were travelling earlier.

OOC: Made available: 1 bedroll, 1 blanket, 1 tent, 2 waterskins, 10 Goodberries

Victor frowns, "It seems no matter the power I possess, it is rarely enough... I need more,"

He looks to the two that remain paralysed, "I am sorry, we will do our best to at least keep you warm," he takes his two woolen blankets from his pack and uses them to cover the scouts after shifting them to a position closer to where a fire might ultimately be set up.

Once this is done the paladin turns to Jebor, "Now that all that is urgent is addressed, it is time for introductions. I am Victor, this is Chelsie, Carmen," he gestures to each in turn, "the kenku is Nutcracker and the man nursing his arm is Wendel. Jebor said, "No others. We had to flee a winged beast with the face of a man, and ran right into a spider ambush. We killed a few, but we were already tired and wounded, and there were too many. They wrapped us up, and kept injecting more poison, every hour, to keep us still. We listened, helpless, as they feasted on whatever they had captured before us, yesterday. With the mention of the flying creature they had slain, Nutcracker dropped the bundle he had carved from its carcass and set it beside the camp supplies. "Nutcracker, a skilled hunter!" If he were capable of a grin he would have been. Instead, his dark amber eyes just seemed more menacing without the same facial motions as the others could manage.

As the area became more cleared of webs he made space for a fire to be built and a tent potentially set up. Even a short break before setting out would do better with some private shelter beyond the cave itself.

It had been getting worse. The damage he was doing to himself while using his patron's power. There was going to be a limit one day. Still, being able to help these people in any way was a blessing he would have never believed himself capable of before. After helping to clear the cave and make it a little more comfortable for the hunter's they'd come to rescue. For his part Wendel almost missed what Victor had said as he was lost in thought. Eventually though he nodded. "Rest would be good. If its to be shifts I can take whatever shift you think you'll need from me. Gritt won't sleep with his curiosity so peeked so he can help through the whole of the night. Don't get into to much trouble my little friend."

With that Wendel sat, more crumpled into a heap, his head resting on the pack he bore, Gritt started wandering around the cave poking at the hunters and walking up to Carmen and then Chelsie to look closer at them. As Wendel nodded off his tiny rocklike friend moved toward the cave entrance and disappeared into a rock before popping back out and wandering around again. He'd continue doing that and occasionally silently giving guidance to whoever was currently on watch.

Hopefully the watch would be similar to the night before and be uneventful. If it wasn't, well, he had a surprise or two and a way to raise the alarm. With the webs being cleared away from the room he could also make use of the few torches he had brought along as well to help with his lack of special vision.

The night passes uneventfully. Everyone wakes fully rested. The hunters are healed up, and ready to set out at the earliest opportunity. Though they lost most of their weapons at some point since fleeing the manticore, they each still have a dagger. They also still have enough rations for the return trip. Jebor suggests saving the rations for the village, if Nutcracker will continue to provide berries. He took the time to harvest meat from the spiders, and collected enough to feed half the tribe for a day. He mentions that there are hunting traps they can check on the way back, which will hopefully cover much of what was lost.

[QUEST] Missing Scouts

In the morning, Carmen feels ready to try a new technique she had come up with. Setting down some herbs, she uses some of the burning embers to light them as she concentrates upon summoning a familiar for herself. All sorts of imagery is conjured by her as she tries to reach out to a particular type of creature....fox? No, too reliant on land....Owl? No, too weak.....Rat? Reviled in parts...

Her mind casts itself out, then unbidden, a deep command issues from her patron.... "Darkmantle"

For unknown reasons, Carmen feels herself turning around into the cave where the hunters had once been captured. She looks across, noticing a stalagmite on the ground that was all kinds of inconspicuous. As she reached out towards it, the thing unfurled itself slowly, then crawled up and over her shoulders to rest upon her back like some kind of cloak.

"Yes." she said. "Yes, this will do quite nicely."

OOC: Leveled up to 4th (in adventure!)

The hunters were looking as well as can be expected. "I'm happy to check the traps on the way. Hopefully they haven't attracted larger enemies hungry for food though." she says.

[QUEST] Missing Scouts

Victor had risen early and made a few patrols before settling down to read the sacred texts and say his prayers. During making his daily thanks and reaffirming his oath, he focused on one of the tenets: Strength Above All. In his mediations he beseeched Zariel for the power of his allies but it was not she who answered his prayers.

It was another fallen one that heard his prayers this morning, a different figure depicted in the writings called Olianthius. Those witnessing Victor's prayers would note a shadowlike helm entwined about his horns as well as a change in his eyes to black sclera and glowing yellow irises.
Once his devotions are finished these visual changes fade but the underlying surge of power remains, causing the tiefling to grin in an off-puttingly fiendish way.

"I have a spear and several javelins if they will serve you better than those daggers," Victor offers the elves as he eyes the new mantle about Carmen's shoulders.

"We should return via these traps as you suggest, it would take days for your tribe to starve but not so long to resort to desperation and infighting."

OOC I have 1 spear and 5 javelins I can hand out if they'll be used.

While reliable in a fight, he would be glad to put some distance between himself and them for a while. Things were getting... unnatural? Not that anything around here was terribly natural to him at this point.

Seeing as how the hunters were on a lack of supplies, Nuts also offered up his hand axe and a second sprig of mistletoe in the event one of the five was like himself in ability.

Congratulations!  You each recieve: 900xp, 6 downtime units. 1 item from the "limitless supply section" from Hexia's shop per person (if it requires special materials, you must still provide them.) If you can provide the equivalent of 300 rations, you can all sleep at Fierce Hearts village for the next two weeks (thus not having to pay lifestyle expenses in town until you have spent 28 downtime units.)

Once again, Wendel had become, what was now becoming less than, unusually silent on the return trip. Even Gritt made very few appearances. Whatever it was Wendel was thinking or going through seemed to be exacerbated further as the group made it closer and closer to the Fierce Hearts village. It almost seemed he was ready to up and leave the group and retreat somewhere far away from adventure for a while. Maybe it was doubt in his self that caused it or maybe it was just time for him to take a break. He saw the conclusion of their mission through though. Before they entered Hexia's shop Wendel stopped and finally spoke up.

"Carmen, Victor, it has been a trip working alongside you but I don't know that I can maintain as I am and keep doing what we're doing. I need time to recover. Chelsie and Nutcracker, all of you. Thank you for showing me what a group of people could do together. Maybe one day I'll be back out by your sides fighting the creatures that encroach on the village, I just... I just think I need to take a break... Figure some things out. My sister has been working on something back in town and maybe it will be done by the time we return. I want you all to stop by and say hi now and then. She hasn't told anyone yet but she's pretty great with tattoos, and one specialty she is working on is really exciting. Carmen, you've got a familiar kinda like Gritt here but unique in its way of course. What Luna can do is create a link to a familiar for anyone who doesn't yet have that link on their own. So, when the shop opens if any of you are interested, make sure you let her know you were the group that kept me alive out here and she'll be sure to get you a great deal."

He pauses a bit, "I uh, I'm going to just go back through the portal so if any or all of you are going to be staying here I can report back to Smith. Was there anything of note I may need to tell him that hasn't been shared yet?"

OOC: I'll be around but probably won't be going on adventures much for a little while, Luna and Wendel have a shop/home that should be opening after I spend one more longrest which I'll probably just do with a downtime unit shortly.

Re: [QUEST] Missing Scouts

The journey back was interesting to the ranger as it was a part of the land he did not pass through the first time through. The use of traps did not appeal to him, but if it was necessary for the tribe to survive then there wasn't much he could do about it. Or was there...

Upon returning to the village, Nutcracker mimicked Victor's gesture of clapping Wendel on the arm after his speech and repeated, "It seems our friend the cracker of nuts and arrow slinger has picked up a few friends of his own." Not the most appropriate, but his library of sounds to repeat were mostly animals and drunken parties; not much in the way of sentiments.

Once they had settled up, Nuts visited Hexia's to claim the magic item reward: an enhancement to his longbow. Now he had an idea of how he could test it out.

OOC: Nuts will pick the Weapon of Warning enchantment for his Longbow. Then he'll burn some Downtime Units hunting.
