[Quest] Patrol Group 10

Your first patrol goes by without any incident. You each get your reward (25gp, 100xp, and 1 Downtime Unit,) and begin another. Three hours into your next patrol, as you travel between the southern towers, you spot a trio of centipedes, each over three feet long, in the middle of the road, about 50 feet in front of you. The venomous creatures could pose a threat if they get too close to the town.

It would not help the town in the long term." She shrugged, "Unless Divok has a better idea I think it is likely best we remove them."

"I'm not one to destroy life unless truly required. The only way I can think of dealing with these is to lead them away from the village and remove the threat to life, or take care of them ourselves. Perhaps if we combine our druidcraft and create areas that smell intensely of musk we could find that it either attracts or repels them." suggests Divok, and he begins casting.

Cast druidcraft to create an area of skunk smell close to the centipedes to see if they react against it or towards it.

The centipedes move toward the smell. They feel around with their antennae, and then begin moving quickly in different directions. One begins to move in Divok's direction, then stops, exactly 30 feet away from him. An instant later, all three centipedes begin charging his direction.

Roll initiative! If you beat an 18, post your first round action!

"Oh no! That just made them mad!" Myre laments, although it seemed she expected it to go that way as she was quick to begin casting.

Myre taps her staff on the ground and illusory thorns sprout briefly from the mushrooms before similar thorns and barbs cover the ground around the centipedes.

"Get ready!"

Walter catches up to the rest of the group after having become distracted by a gnarled tree trunk that looked like a face from the right angle. "What are we fighting?" He queries as he gets his weapons ready.

Tiria mutters an incantation and makes a gesture, a faint transparent layer of pale yellowish light seems to flash over her body then fade to be barely visible.

Stepping forward, the wizard draws her dagger and advances in a strange fluid motion with the blade weaving and swinging. A barely audible whine is made as her small weapon cuts through the air.

Tiria casts a spell of armor, and begins an elegant dance with her dagger.
Myre conjures thorns from the ground around the centipedes.
The first centipede heads through the thorns directly to Tears, attempting to bite her, but she steps out of the way.
The second dashes away from the edge of the spikes, and begins to circle around them.
The third dashes out of the spikes, and then approaches Myre.

Dark squares are under spike growth (The ground in a 20-foot radius centered on a point within range twists and sprouts hard spikes and thorns. The area becomes Difficult Terrain for the Duration. Tiria's dagger flashes out with a booming echo at the centipede that had attempted to bite her, sheathing it in a shifting, roiling energy. Almost immediately afterwards she dances a little towards her allies.

OOC: Action Booming Blade attack against E1 hits AC 20 for 4 piercing damage. If it willingly moves before the start of my next turn it will take 4 thunder damage.
Move to E13.

Sovok charges forward, swinging his maul at the centipede infront of Myre.  The massive hammer slamming down hard on the scuttling insect.

Divok sees the spikes and sees an opportunity. He races over to the eastern edge and attempts to use a thorny whip to drag one of the centipedes into the spike growth caused by Myre.

As one the centipedes closes in on Myre she frowns and a puff of spores appears around the creatures head.

Watching the goliath smash into the creature Myre widens here eyes, That was brutal!

She casts and the mushrooms on her staff turn hard as stone. She strikes the creature in front of her.


Reaction: E3 moves within 10ft of Myre. Activate Halo of Spores. (2 necrotic damage DC13 to negate).

"I wonder what these things are called," Walter muses as he moves out from behind Irsoneic. Watching one of the centipedes making its way around them he points at it with his sword and closes one eye, mutters under his breath and a beam of energy shoots off toward the insect. "pew pew"

With one powerful blow, Sovok splatters the centipede nearest Myre into a fine paste!
Walter fires a beam from his sword at the unhurt centipede, striking it.
Irsoneic moves forward, biting the centipede Walter had just struck. It tastes foul, and smells even worse, but at least its no longer moving! Swiftly, he moved forward to the last one, and snapped it up with his powerful jaws.

Congratulations, you each get 40 xp!

"Hmmm," Tiria mutters to herself as she cleans her blade with a rag, "I think bigger would be better..."

Looking up from the dagger to her allies, she grins, "Well that was fun. I wonder if that's all we'll see today?"

She proceeds to nudge one of the dead creatures with a foot, "So should we push these off the road and leave them for the scavengers? If there are insects this big around here then there're probably big birds that eat them right?"

OOC: Bladesong will fizzle out within a minute but the mage armour will remain for 8 hours (presumably the rest of the patrol)

He hadn't managed to be effective at all so far, but the patrol was young and there was plenty of time to show his skills.

The centipedes have a strong smell, a sort of a cross between skunk musk and dirty socks. You don't know what kind of creatures would want to eat them, but if you dispose of them properly, the next patrol will certainly find out!

"Well done small folk" He says in a deep voice.  Sovok wipes his maul clean on the ground, then slings it across his back.  Taking out his Saex, he proceeds to skin each of the centipedes, carefully carving off their chitenous outer casing, and their fierce mandibles.  Once done, he cleans his Saex, rolls the hides up, and ties them with some rope.  Fastening the hides beneath his pack, he then stands ready to continue.

Once the skinning is complete, Divok will bury the corpses in a suitable location. It wasn't pleasant work, but it served a purpose. The body would decay and return to nature either way, but this would help reduce the smell somewhat.

When all is done, he turns to the others and asks if they are ready to continue the patrol.

On return to Smith's Gambit and collection of their pay, Tiria gives the others a wave, "I think I'm off to do some shopping and have some rest. A longer sword and some more protective armour are probably a good idea! I hope I see you all again soon, maybe we can go do something a bit more challenging than patrolling the perimeter."

After any further discussion with the others she heads off to buy herself some gear.

OOC: Off to Sai's and Spark's to shop then the Frostbite Inn for a long rest and a level up!

Divok had expected this, but he wasn't prepared mentally for potentially finding a dead burning corpse in the wreckage. He mentally communicated with Sovok. "You take the left, I'll take the right." he projected, and he found himself approaching from an angle to the right as he raced forward.

The wagon is tipped over in the middle of the road, and still burning. Around it, you see a number of dead bodies: a horse, caught in the blaze of the wagon it is still tethered to; A human man, in scorched robes, his staff lying broken and charred at his side; Four strange humanoids, with lizard-like features, but bright red skin rather than scales.

Divok wasn't familiar with these creatures, but he knew that if they had attacked the man in the wagon it was highly unlikely that they would be friendly. Keeping to the trees, he attempted to get closer before unleashing a whip of thorns at the closest one.

He too, is dead. His robes and flesh alike are battered, torn and burned. The leather satchel hanging from his neck fared a bit better, though it, too, has holes scorched into it. Coins, broken glass, and some spilled liquid are free to spill where they will, though something larger can be glimpsed inside. The other dead creatures still grasp broken iron bars. [Quest] Patrol Group 10

This was all quite strange. Divok wondered if the cages had once held these lizards captive for some kind of circus show or even for sale to unscrupulous bidders. The fact that five of the cages were open, but only four dead creatures were around the man spoke of the potential for one to be still alive. It could be leaving to try to survive, or it could head into the settlement to look for food. Either could be bad.

"Let's take the satchel for now. The fire should hopefully take care of the bodies and the possibility of scavengers reduced, but I think one might be loose still." he says mentally to Sovok.

Divok starts to closely inspect the area to see if he can find tracks at all.

More coins and glass spill out of the satchel, as well as a sour smelling red liquid, which doesn't seem to melt. It would seem that there had been a healing potion in the bag, but it had been broken during the fight. A trail of melted snow, now frozen into ice, leads away from the road, into the woods to the northwest. You can follow it effortlessly.

"Makes sense to keep the remains of that healing potion in a new jar or bottle if anybody has a spare." suggests Divok. He doesn't have the tools for such a task. "It looks like the survivor went this way though. If we are reasonably quick we could catch up to it."

He looks at the coins on the floor. "I think I'll just take some of these though." he says with a grin on his face.

Its a bit diluted by the snow Divok had to pick up with it, and he couldn't get it all, but it was a highly concentrated potion, so its now equivalent to a standard potion of healing, as per the player's handbook. he also gathers 9gp.

So, are you all moving single file, side-by-side, or what? The trail is easy to spot, and the trees are sparse ahead, so you could even spread out if you wish.

While Walter doesn't get in Divok's way of tracking, it's not certain that he got the gist of what the lead man was signalling. Rather, the little green man is engrossed in the trail and practically has his nose to the snow in astonishment, trying to absorb as much as possible.

[Quest] Patrol Group 10

The trail is easy to follow, as the snow has melted everywhere the creature had touched it. Sovok can tell that it walks on two large, webbed feet, and drags its tail along the ground. He guesses by its gait that it moves about as fast a human. You find a spot where the amount of melted snow suggests it rested for awhile-- and it hasn't had time to freeze yet. The creature's nearby, and probably heard you coming. The trail disappears behind a nearby tree, where you see and hear a bright orange-red tail causing the water beneath it to sizzle.

Divok tries to identify the creature, but he can only see the tail!
The creature steps out, and shouts . Divok recognizes it as one of the fallen creatures. It looks like a bipedal newt, but its body temperature is hot enough to melt snow instantly! It is most definitely hostile!

Roll initiative, and if you get at least a 9, post your first round actions!

Walter opens up with a blast of magical force, striking the creature in the shoulder.
Sovok rushes in, stumbles and slides, fouling his aim.
Divok moves and conjures a thorny whip that pulls the creature closer to him. The creature reacts by pointing a finger and cursing, and Divok is enveloped in hellish flames! Take 14 fire damage unless you make a Dex save DC 12 for half (rounded to 7.)
On its turn, it hurls a ray of fire at each of you: Divok, it misses with a 6. Sovok, it hits AC 17 for 9 fire damage. Walter, it misses with an 11.

Walter fires again, clipping the creatures arm.
In a rage, Sovok rushes up and clobbers the thing, momentarily knocking the wind out of it.
Divok transforms into a huge wolf, and bites the creature, nearly pulling it to the ground before it shakes free of his teeth.
The creature tries to launch a bolt of fire at Divok, but it can't aim effectively with Divok and Sovok so close.

The creature wore no clothes, and carried no weapons. It remains still as Walter examines it. Its body showed signs of abuse and malnourishment. It probably wouldn't have survived more than a few hours out here, alone, but there's no telling the damage it could have done if had gone deeper into the woods.
