Character Creation Discussion
Here is where you can all discuss your character ideas with each other. After all players have been accepted to the game, you will be expected to create at least two bonds tying you to different characters.  This is to help facilitate circle and character unity.

You will also be expected to create two NPC's and one location of Chiaroscuro to help fill in the setting detail.

No more than one attribute at 5 to start
No more than one attribute at 1 to start
No resources higher than 3 (and even then you might have to develop your resources in the first little bit of the story)
No Cult, Following, high levels of contacts, high level allies.
Your supernal cannot be the same as anyone else.

Basically, imagine you have just recently (within the last few month) shown up with no income, no friends, no nothing.  If your idea of why someone fitting this general theme could have whatever allocations you want, then feel free to make your case.

Also, if possible, try to be different Caste.  If not, then you at least need to be varied in your abilities such that you are very different so that everyone can have a chance to shine.

Henlo, I'm looking to make a Brawl Supernal Dawn. Demethea's meant to be a big sister type who tries to keep "her people" out of trouble.

Occluded Butterfly tries to be mercenary but for some reason keeps helping the underdog.  She does however believe that everything has a price.

Sounds like she and Demethea would get along famously. I was actually wondering if Buttterfly and Demethea might have met up beforehand, in a big/little sibling sort of deal. That way Butterfly could have taught her to sneeki breeki around.

Possibly, although she was raised as a courtesan in The City of the Steel Lotus, then moved to Gem, and has moved around a lot since then, just recently arriving in Chiaroscuro.

Hi everyone I have two concepts pitch each has some breathing room:
The First:
The Scythe that Hunts the Dead either a Zenith or Eclipse caste Sailor/ship captain trained with fighting multiple enemies at once. The character wants to recreate his crew, save his brother and right the mistakes of both himself and his brother. He weilds a soul steel scythe.

The Second :
Ascending Sky is a twilight caste solar. That is a natural teacher and magical scholar. That has escaped the blessed isle after his exaltation do to a friend and lovers aid. He is peaceful and noncombatant. I see him kinda being more about building a school and maybe handling education and behind the scenes support. His Supernal is Lore.

The storyteller mentioned that there is some overlap with my first character and another character.

Ill hold off on doing full character builds until i figure out which angle im going to take and what will work with the party.

Henlo, Skythe. Demethea would be naturally drawn to protecting Ascending Sky if he could accept being treated as something like a kid brother.

Ascending Sky would make a fairly decent little brother. He would be completely llost and alone. He has spent his entire life in a world where as long as he did what he was told he would be safe. Now he has to take care of himself and he has no real knowledge of how to do so.

Character Creation Discussion
Hey, guys! Not entirely sure what I'm doing yet, we'll see how the group shakes out: right now I'm leaning towards Ride, Larceny, or Survival Supernal as either a more physical sort of Zenith or a sojourning Eclipse.

Background:
Character Name: Storm of Light

Appearance: An ever-smiling, soft-eyed cowboy type with a bronze-brown complexion and dark hair and eyes marking him as a Southerner.

Personality: Easy-going and friendly but strange, somewhat "out of alignment" with the world around him - always half in a dream, always the storyteller. Reckless and even ferocious when pushed beyond the limits of his good nature, he nonetheless finds things to admire even in his enemies.

Major Events: A failed scholar with too much romantic idealism and too little interest in accurate, verifiable, historic evidence, to the great shame of his scavenger troupe, who invested considerably in his education.

A brief romance with a demon, testing his willpower and eventually his humanity; long since cooled and ended amicably, he still bears odd scars and a certain fondness for the scent of blackberries and blood.

The moment that shattered and crystallized him - he and his sisters had been told a wild tale of unbelievable fortune, a scintillating treasure unearthed by the movements of a great beast beneath the glass-strewn wastes of Once Bright. There was no treasure, however: only traps, serpents with the voices of men, and the revelation that their tale-teller was a bandit fae whose cruel tribe now hunted the troupe. His ride to return saw the sands seared into a trail of gold beneath his horse's hooves, and by taking his Second Breath, he found the strength and speed to save his family - though having sold his soul for the power of an Anathema, it was, of course, undisputed that he would have to leave.

Prior Life: A scavenger and adventurer whose troupe wandered across the south, his store of knowledge and sharp mind have been as advantageous to him as deft fingers and a skillful blade. He has some store of treasures yet remaining, tokens enough to survive in the style to which successful scavengers often grow accustomed in the South.

Beliefs: As a man of no land, he carries many superstitions and legends - some of which have no more weight than wind, others of which prove vital to the survival of desert wanderers. The Anathema are the "demon-eating demons;" the word in the archaic tongue none of his people actually speak but maintain a scattering of for just such nomenclatures literally means "cannibal curse." He believes his time with the hell-thing Shadow of More drew the spear of sunlight that drove him from his people, and the voices he hears in his dreams are indeed those of infernal origin; knowing he is beyond exorcism, he seeks the strength and wisdom to triumph temporarily over his possessors and live life to the fullest before, inevitably, his soul is devoured at last.

Goals: He wants to conquer the "possession" of Exaltation so that he can return to his troupe, to his sisters and parents and grandparents, and lead them to a better life with the newfound power he possesses.

Less nobly - he wants to slay or steed great beasts, brave the depths of haunted tombs, claim wealth beyond a mortal's daring, and bare his teeth at the distant Realm, who suppress Anathema and free peoples with what seems to him equal fervor and equal injustice.

He has a certain amount of curiosity, as well, about his dreams and the half-known strangers that wander them. He wants to understand these "demons," and perhaps see for himself what they have done to the world - their tombs, their legends, their legacies - in pursuit of triumphing over their influence.

Chiaroscuro: He rode right in, bold as you please, selling off the jewelry of sand-swallowed temples and the efficaciously-enchanted weapons of the Poisoned Laughter bandit tribe in exchange for passage into the city and board within.

The ST asked if I could expand on some stuff which I am happy to do in the interest of beginnings, so:

Tryst with a Demon: In the lonesome tomb of...Councillor Lashara, let's go with, who had a short and troublesome reign over a city-state that no longer exists, dwelled (dwelt?) the very actual demon courtesan Shadow of More. Shadow was a favored concubine tasked with essentially sitting and pining until such time as the sun might kiss her liege's face once more. Nobody really asked her what she thought about it, so a couple centuries later - when Storm of Light broke into the tomb - she was pretty well ready to spit. Now Storm had actually broken into the tomb, complete with a collapsed entrance (a serious obstacle even for a well-prepared mortal) and so he was stuck down there for some time. They got to talking, once Storm had determined she wasn't about to eat him and she had determined he wasn't (her greatest fear at that point) a necromancer come to raise the queen once more, and one thing led to another. Storm ended up freeing her from her bondage through the expedient method of cracking the councillor's sarcophagus and hauling her corpse out onto the sand, and as Shadow was a few hundred years out of date on the region, she ended up sticking around.

Later, things went a bit south - but they eventually curved around northwards, more or less!

The Scavenger Troupe: A handful of large families organized into a loose collective by time and semi-strategic marriages, the troupe's heritage claims everything from an actual traveling carnival to a minor bandit clan driven from their favored routes to a Realm satrap of yore, half-legendary, in the expeditionary days where a bureaucrat with a wild streak might very well have slipped "off the books" so to speak. Storm's sisters are actual blood sisters.

Once Bright: Made up. A wasteland well south of Chiaroscuro where no paths cross, owing to its fell aspect: littered with broken glass of a thousand colors (much of it sharp enough to lame a horse, and some of it so sharp a careless traveler might be cut and bleed half to death before noticing the wound) it is believed to have been an outpost or expansion of some sort connected to the Great Jewel, but abandoned well before the doom that befell its superior. Beneath the broken glass and sand are great structures almost totally drowned and choked, ill-rumored, within which a court of unpleasant fey laired when Shadow found it. He learned little of interest, as he and his sisters were led there by deception and barely escaped with their lives, save at least grain of truth: something HAD shifted the desert near to Once Bright, and parts of its structure were unearthed as a result.

That is a lot of text, so here is a relevant TL;DR and connections workshopping bit:

  • Storm studied in hopes of becoming a scholar, but couldn't cut it. Classmate? Someone looking for a discount regional historian?
  • Storm spent most of his life as part of a scavenger troupe - that means regularly buying supplies and tools, regularly selling loot and oddities, carrying messages and packages, and doing other stuff that might bring a small nomad group into contact with others.
  • Storm had a demon paramour for a little while, who left unbound. Perhaps there's an intersection here or a later meeting.
  • Storm came into Chiaroscuro selling treasures, rather ostentatiously, marking him as capable in his field. Though he's grappling with his "demons," he would be hard pressed to ignore an opportunity if one were presented to him.

The Scythe that Hunts the Dead:
Ascending Sky would make a fairly decent little brother. He would be completely llost and alone. He has spent his entire life in a world where as long as he did what he was told he would be safe. Now he has to take care of himself and he has no real knowledge of how to do so.

Another thing is that Demethea is kind of averse to sorcerers due to being brainwashed by one, so if Sky ends up being a sorcerer it could help her bring closure to that part of her past (plus he gets to show his mastery by taking a pupil).

Now, on the other hand, she could have met Scythe while travelling as cargo aboard his vessel, and they might have bonded over mutual Solarness.

And since we're posting charactery stuff...

quote:
Character Name: Demethea, AKA Bronze Tigress

Appearance: Demethea's a tanned, athletic young woman, standing roughly 170cm tall. She has (strawberry) blonde hair and blue eyes like the sky. Large muscles bulge along her arms and thighs, somewhat marring her feminine curves. She prefers simple, loose clothing that doesn't restrict her freedom of movement, but as an ex-gladiator she's not exactly averse to dressing to impress.

Personality: Demethea's a gruff wanderer with a heart of gold. If someone deserving needs help, she'll do what she can, especially when there are kids involved. She doesn't talk much, but she means everything she says and never breaks a promise.

Major Events: Those would probably be: becoming the protector/big sister figure of her street gang, which taught her the importance of strength, and more importantly using it to protect her people, becoming a gladiator, and subsequently being enslaved by a wicked sorceress, which made her wary of them.

Prior Life: tl;dr version: Demethea used to be a street kid who protected her family, a street gang. Her fighting skills led to her becoming a gladiator. Her contract was bought up by a mind controlling outcaste savant who used drugs to turn Demethea into a bodyguard/pet. Demethea Exalted when she refused a command to kill the last surviving member of her family (the rest had died retrieving an artifact for Imialek) and instead broke through her years of conditioning to strike Imialek instead. Horrified at what she had become, Demethea gave her surviving sibling over to a temple for healing and then fled Nexus.

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
Demethea grew up in Nexus, part of the child gangs that roamed the street. She grew big fast, and she found it natural to use her size and early physical prowess to protect her weaker comrades from angry shopkeepers and street toughs. As she grew older, Demethea got the attention of the manager of one of the city's gladiatorial arenas. After signing on with him, she went through formal training before she entering the Nexus Circuit as Bronze Tigress, whose speed and balletic grace wowed the crowds. She made money hand over fist, but never forgot her boys (and girls), and shared what she made with them.

All that changed when the outcaste sorcerer Imialek took a liking to her and purchased her contract from her manager with Demethea's weight in silver. Demethea protested, but was persuaded to follow Imialek into her abode with the promise of more silver for her family. Once there, Imialek offered Demethea a glass of wine-of-obedience, and then neither silver or her family meant as much to Demethea as pleasing Mistress Imialek.

Demethea spent three years as Imialek's plaything and protector, put on a regimen of performance-enhancing drugs, wine-of-obedience and sorcerous alteration, until one day when a ragged, bleeding child, the youngest of a small family of street kids who had died exploring one of the tombs of Nexus, staggered in front of Imialek with a pair of golden gauntlets that his adoptive siblings had won with their lives. Imialek ordered her faithful servant to take the gauntlets and then put the wretch out of his misery.

Demethea complied with the first part, but when the boy murmured "Demethea...?" through blood-flecked lips, her fist instead spun and struck a completely surprised Imialek in the gut. That would not have been enough to hurt her severely, but the next blow was illuminated by the golden sunburst shining on her brow, and Demethea's barrage of blows sent Imialek flying into the wall behind as a pile of pulverized meat.

Beliefs: Demethea's big on family. She's not a mom, but taking care of her people has always felt natural to her. She understands that she's done bad things, but figures that the best way to do with it is to do good things to make up for it. It won't wash the bad away, but having more good in the world has got to make it a better place, right? Demethea's not much into fancy sermons either; she prefers to let her actions speak louder than words. And finally, Demethea feels the Anathema were just a bunch of old stories told to scare kids, and the fact that she hasn't suddenly become evil means that the Realm was lying about them (it helps that she was a thrall to someone who was really evil just before Exalting).

Goals: Demethea wants to fully master her powers and figure out what her place in the world is, now that she's a Solar. She also wants to check in on the little brother she left behind, but she knows she can't do that right now.

Chiaroscuro: Demethea went partway by boat, partway by land. Mainly by land, though. She doesn't like the ocean much and considers the long journey along the south to be something like rehab for her after years of alchemical damage to her system. Also, it gives her a chance to be a travelling hero and earn her own keep (which she still spends as fast as she earns).

Stormtalker Herod

Re: Character Creation Discussion
Hello all.  Herod here was designed as a pirate-y guy: Focusing on Brawl, Sail, and eventually Martial Arts and War

Now, it looks like that steps on a bunch of folks toes (or gets me a 'bash brother' or two) so I'm willing to be flexible to work with the group.

Only caste that wouldn't work for this character is Twilight. (Night is borderline)

Here's what I sent in:

quote:
Character Name: Stormtalker Herod
Appearance: A man in his early thirties, weathered and worn by long hours in the elements.  He dresses simply (and briefly) most of the time, but can be convinced to wear a shirt if the situation calls for it.  He keeps his hair in dreadlocks for ease of care...he should probably do something different with it now.
Personality: For a rip-roaring sailor turned anathema, X is decidedly without swagger.  Like a lion among hyenas he has no reason to bark or bicker--he knows he's the bigger beast, and everyone else is just going to have to get used to this fact.  This aura of implacability serves him well in most social situations, but tends to crack when he is truly interested or invested in something worthwhile.  He almost never gets angry, but when he does, it leaves a blast radius.

Major Events: Born in Gem to a whore, went to sea to chase after his father (and, you know, money and freedom).  Got roped onto a Realm vessel, rose up the ranks to Bosun (aka the officer that actually works for a living).  Went on a mission in Western waters, got beset by storm hags (bloody stupid officers) and was forced to either do something incredibly stupid, or stand there and watch the ship sink...so, he climbed to the front of the vessel and rebuked the storm.  He cussed out the Storm Hags with such fury and foul language that they balked, and for a moment the storm stopped.

And the sun shown through.

Once he realized what had happened he was forced to jump ship, before his dogmatic employers could show their "gratitude" to him for saving their lives.
Prior Life: Working class sailor (bosun/quartermaster).  Not a pirate, but a Dragon ship is only respectable in Dragon lands if you know what I mean.  Mother in Gem (not estranged, but it has been a few years). One Paramour of note ([family] Araoke--DB first mate of the Pinna).  Jackass dad out there somewhere.

Beliefs: The Crew is The Crew...everyone else can go F themselves.  The reward of a job well done is More Work. Gods are like sharks (best avoided whenever possible) and their cults aren't much better.  The immaculate order is just a better funded cult than most.
Therefore, everything they say is to be taken with salt.  And now that he is one of their hated demons, he has even LESS reason to go to one of their damn services now, eh?
Goals:
--Item 1: new ship, new crew.  No way he's staying around here if he can help it.
--Item 2: A real martial arts teacher.  He's been muddling through for years just fine as a brawler, but something tells him that he could be doing more...a lot more.
--Item 3: expand new ship and crew into an Empire (there's a whole lot of steps in between obviously.  But best to start small.
--Item 4: He's been having dreams lately.  About weapons, armor, a boat (his boat) that can sail on land as well as water.  It's around here somewhere...just got to find it.
--Item 5: Ma-Ha-Tsuchi...fuck that guy.  Sure he knew about the bastard before, but all of a sudden, his very existence offends Herod to his core.  Not yet, mind, but one of these days, the beast in the jungle will have to be Dealt With.
Chiaroscuro: bartered his way there as a laborer on a variety of barges and such, trying to get as far away from his home ports as possible.  Best to plot some place where the Immaculates have no idea he exists (yet)

I'm thinking either a Dawn or Eclipse depending on Party Needs, haven't picked much beyond that.

Re: Character Creation Discussion
@Denethea

On Sorcery for Ascending Sky, I am certain he will have it. The mental issue right now is I dont know if I like any of the shaping rituals in the corebook that would make since with his backstory. I may check out the ones in Lunar and Dragon blooded book when I can or try to discuss a custom one themed around either, written spellwork, weaving such as changing fate or just astrology (again fate themed). He would be happy to teach about sorcery.

Im leaning towards Ascending Sky. I feel like so far he is the best fit and I love playing the teacher and less combaty characters anyway. Also Demethea could find him and teach him to survive. He is a house servent/slave of a Dynast House exiled because after he exalted the dragon blooded sorceress lover realized that if it was found out she was not only sleeping with her servent but sharing secrets of sorcery with him, he might be killed and she punished severely. I'm still debating if she knew he was solar or just realized he to had learned sorcery.

@ Storm of Light:

Ascending Sky is a brilliant child but missing a true formal education. Most of his knowledge comes from books and discussion of the theory. So the pair might have interesting discussion.

I would want to make sure our lores were split at least a bit because its such a large swath of options. I was leaning towrds

He would certainly be interested in any information about an actual meeting with an unbound demon. That said if he ever found her he would attempt to banish or bind her. Demons are dangerous.

@ Stormtalker Herod

I think Ill go ahead and switch fully over to Ascending sky. As much as I love Scythe we don't need two pirates wanting a ship in the party.

Since Everyone else is. I will note that this was a 2nd concept pitched so I need to work a bit on some of the details:

The Scythe that Hunts the Dead:
Name: Ascending Sky

Appearance: Usually wears simple clothing breaches and a shirt. He has long blonde hair and blue eyes.

Personality:Intelligent and caring if a little air headed. He wants to both understand how things work and share that understanding with the world.

Backgound:

Ascending Sky worked in the dragon-blood household of the Cathak Family he became close to a young Cathak by the named Cathak Zia. He proved to be a little bit of a genius and became the young dynast confident and study person. Working with her he learned much and helped her write papers or design idea. With his help she made Heptagram and there communications continued through her time there. They become lover during her infrequent returns home and together worked on her final magical thesis. It was late one night alone in the library pouring over the last plan when he figured it out the key to improving the wards for demon summoning. A simple change that would improve the spells safeguards. He returned a letter with the answer and Zia passed her school and became an accredited Sorceress and returned to celebrate with him. During there love making that evening she figured out that he had somehow gained power. That he could be a monster and she had given him access to books on sorcery and magic. The two talked well into that evening and she decided that it was better to smuggle him away and politely forget about him. He accepted not wanting to hurt her reputation or be put to death. She used her influence and money to ship him off the isle. Soon after he found himself getting off the boat in Chiaroscuro

Re: Character Creation Discussion
Good morning all,

Eden is also from the Realm, not something she tries to advertise. She can easily trace her lineage back to the Scarlet Empress herself. As a young Dynast, I dreamed of going to the Heptagram but had to settle for a Healer's Academy when I disappointed the entire House. I spent the last year of my mortal life attached to one of the Legions as a Healer. That is where I exalted and have been trying to come to grips with all of this.

I am leaning towards Zenith or Twilight
