Information and RTJ
Setting: Homebrew or Forgotten Realms
Starting Level: 3
Players: One PC and an NPC sidekick
Details:
In the first adventure, your PC and an NPC hero discover treasure - yours would find a ring and the NPC (also male) would find a suit of nondescript silvery armor. The NPC puts on the armor, and yours puts on the ring. Suddenly, the NPC’s armor begins to change shape until it becomes the form of a silver woman. It seems the NPC has donned the magical "shield maiden" armor, while yours is wearing the ring that controls it (although the person inside retains full consciousness). At that point, I pretty much see your character, instead of feeling guilt or finding a way of releasing the armor from his NPC companion, he is overjoyed by the revelation, gleefully stating something like, "How fortunate that the ring and armor were together - you're going to be my shield maiden from now on!" Without even giving it a second thought.
At that point, the shield maiden will work like a sidekick (D&D Essentials) with a few special abilities, such as being able to transfer HP damage to the shield maiden and other features.
In the Mature/Ecchi version, the shield maiden would have an anatomically correct bosom, which can also be rubbed for good luck, as well as other "fanservice" (but not Adult) features.
Beyond that, it would be a fairly normal D&D campaign with a unique sidekick. Adventure, treasure, dungeons, and all that fun stuff.
