In reply to Levi (msg # 10):

In the beginning...the Titans moved across the deep
Then...the light was formed, and asked them to serve
This resulted in...the Titans refusing.
And because of this...The light with sorrow had to force them to work.
Until...until the Titans betrayed the truth of the light and its wonder
And now...they where cast into darkness for refusal of doing the labor of building the world.

In reply to Storyteller (msg # 13):

The titans dwelt 'on the ground', despite the fact the earth supposedly had not been created yet. They where powerful, and yet bestial and primitive. Only the Light could show them their true and higher purpose-to labor for the good of all. And obey of course.

Later, when they rebel but after they have formed the earth, the Light casts them into darkness to suffer for their disloyalty. The earth is imperfect because the titans rebelled. They remain in the darkness, luring the unwary with their false stories and disloyalty, eating the immortal souls of all those who refuse to follow the Light.

Obviously, this is not a factual account. In fact its a metaphor to justify the theocracy and slavery.

It could be. It also could just be a reason to oppress and dominate a less technological advanced set of humans.

After thinking on it, I believe that is Theocratic propaganda. I don't think that The Light can be the Unspeakable Power. The titans must have been able to harness the unspeakable power to create the world.
I think the power lies with them in the darkness. The Light wants us to believe that it banished the titans, but the truth is that the titans are protecting the power from The Light because The Light would misuse it.

In reply to Levi (msg # 17):

It could just be unknowable as well. Ether because it's a 'truth mere mortals are not ment to know', or because like all creation myths its lacking detailed info early man does not have access to.

The unspeakable power may be something wholly unrelated to humans and just wants them gone.

That's true. Ultimately, I suppose, the GM is the only one who will know if there is any truth to the myth.

I need to clarify something, though. Are you suggesting that according to myth the unspeakable power (whatever that may be) wants humans gone, or wants the titans gone?

In reply to Levi (msg # 19):

The way I saw it, the light is the more advanced humans who proceeded to enslave the less tech advanced humans-the titans. I had no thoughts on the unspeakable power, figuring the GM would add that in as needed.

Ok, whew. Thank you. I asked because I will most likely be playing the Adept or the Beloved. If the Power were to possess some form of consciousness and want to get rid of humans it would have a significant impact on my character.

The images I have at this point are pretty dark. Like maybe the Theocracy demands extreme sacrifice from their faithful followers and who actively hunts non-believers that they arbitrarily label as heretics and punish publicly (and probably brutally).

I also think it would be cool if the world were human-centric, too. Whether that is because there have never been any non-human races, or because the non-human races are hiding from humans and the oppressive human religious state, or because they have been oppressed and abused nearly to the point of extinction, or something else entirely. They (non-humans) may be planning to reclaim their ancient homelands, or they may not exist at all.

I realize that both of those positions are a little extreme, but starting there leaves me with plenty of room for compromise and still end up with the kind of dark, dangerous, and gritty environment that I think of when I think about SCUP.

I think there should be a world that is not defined by 'The Light'. That is, most of the world comes under the human-centrist view, but there is a truth that exists beyond the conventional understanding. Weather than means the non-humans are dead, hiding, or planning to wipe out the humans in question can be flexible.

About this? I think we covered it. You need to decide if the unspeakable power is the Light or if that is just human myth or not.

Is there another topic we should start looking into?

Characters and factions

For reference, this is what we have so far (I think):

  1. The (generally accepted) creation myth:

In the beginning, the Titans moved across the deep
Then the light was formed and asked them to serve
This resulted in the Titans refusing.
And because of this the light, with sorrow, had to force them to work.
Until the Titans betrayed the truth of the light and its wonder
And now they were cast into darkness for refusal of doing the labor of building the world.

  2. A corrupt Theocracy has subjugated most of the world. The state religion worships the
Light'. They aggressively hunt nonbelievers, brand them heretics, and punish them, brutally, in public view.

  3. There is an underground group of black hoods that stands in opposition to the Theocracy.

  4. There are parts of the world that have not fallen to the Theocracy. This is where things that do not fit into the human-centric view that is espoused by the Theocracy exist. These may be actual physical locales or a separate 'dimension' that is adjacent to the human-centric reality.

Note: This is a work in progress.

Levi is an Adept. He is a slender man with a serene face and kind eyes. He wears simple robes and soft leather boots. He is a member of the Order of the Primal Ardor.

The Order of the Primal Ardor is an outlaw faction who believe that the Light (humanity) disrupted the natural order of things when the Titans were enslaved and subsequently banished. Their goal is to free the Titans, dethrone the High Theocrat and dissolve the intolerant, Light(self)-worshipping religion he espouses. They believe that the Light (humans) was (were) meant to observe the Titan's work, not to guide it. The sin of our pride has thrown creation out of balance and is the cause of our suffering. The world is a prison of our own making.

Black Hood organization:

The Question

Once the Light's inquisitors, spies, and assassins the Question has broken off from the Theocracy. These deadly warriors are experts in stealth, ranged combat and acrobatic technology. Once they fought to persevere the order that came with the Light. However, soon enough they where employed not against dangerous foes-but innocent people whose only crime was doubt and lack of faith. The 'Questioners' became 'the Question', and move to undermine and take down the Theocracy's control on the outer fringes of the empire.

Character name-Melchyia

Like most members of the Question, Mel came from the orphans who make up the Lights many attempts to train fanatical loyalty into children. These orphanages are rife with corruption and abuse, and Mel was chosen as a member of the Question when he finally had enough and fought back. He has been trained from childhood to try and bring down the Light and its falsehood.

It's ok. I totally understand. I'm already pushing the limits of what I have time to do, or I would consider it. I like the premise and it's one of the many games on my shelf that I haven't ever played.  One day, maybe.

Best of luck to everyone! I wish you all good gaming!
