GM, 58 posts Keeper of Games Borderline Insane Wed 22 Jan 2020 at 06:22 | [OOC] The Adventure Begins!Dewayne, for future reference: when you make a post, there's a drop-down menu next to "Name:" at the top. You own, and can use, any of your retainers as identities to post under. It will always default to Kenemon, though, to keep things easier for the majority of your posts.
I've taken the liberty of moving her bit, into her own post, for you. :)

Ideals : To each his own. To one's self be true.
Bonds : I seek revenge on my dog's killer. My late wife gave me that dog. They also stole my caravan.
Flaws : Violence is my answer to almost any challenge.

Your Writ becomes permanent, and you get to stay licensed Adventurers.
Which shields you from some laws (like, if you find an ancient ruin and liberate some shiny bits from a tomb in there? You're not grave robbers, you're Adventurers ...!), and opens up opportunities to earn immense wealth, fame, perhaps even power.
Adventurers of especial renown are often accorded similar stature and respect as minor nobles - the more epic your story, the less "minor" is part of that. Without a proper Writ, you're not an adventurer. You're an outlaw, a bandit, a ne'er-do-well, perhaps even a criminal.
(Also, there's rumor of treasure in the Caverns of Chaos, which is the "trouble spot" you've been sent to the Keep to deal with. You;'ll get to keep that. :) )

So after "Graduation" (whenever that may be) we'll each receive individual writs? Would I have needed a writ back in my bounty hunter days? I'm just trying to tie in some reasoning to hold me back from going buck-wild sometimes.

GM, 61 posts Keeper of Games Borderline Insane Wed 22 Jan 2020 at 22:43 | Re: [OOC] The Adventure Begins!Bounty Hunters have their own, similar, sort of Writ. :) And even for them, "there are limits". Burning down a village,d murdering every last man, woman, and child, and then violating their still-warm corpses JUST to catch one guy, no matter how much he owes in back taxes, is .... frowned upon. :D
And yes, right now you have Provisional Writs. The Academy has to fully endorse you, to get the permanent variety.
(And all of this is thinking the process through more than I expected to need to; I ams uddelypicturing the Realm as being run more by the bureaucracy than by the King and Queen, ha!)

I can see a scenario where the different guilds actually run everything because they are kingdom agnostic. Like all the different guilds elect a representative and shit just isn't going to get done in your kingdom if you dont listen to them.

An apt enough comparison.
I'm picturing the various Writs as being like a Letter of Marque, just for things other than "officially condoned piracy at sea".
Montana James: | I can see a scenario where the different guilds actually run everything |
Partly true in the Dwarfholds - their Confederation has a tricameral legislature, and one of those is of/for the Guilds.
Guilds tend not to be multi-national - they haven't organized that broadly. Yet. Even within the realm, there's no one "Guild of Shoemakers". Each city likely has it's own; they cooperate in general, but don't consider themselves "all one happy family".

So getting a proper adventurers writ might allow one to more easily bring his dog's killers to justice?

No, but it might help keep you from the gallows afterward, depending on how the "brought to justice" bit works out.
Adventurers DO often "take care" of "bandits" from time to time ... :D

Reminder: to roll with advantage, roll 2d20, and choose the option "keep highest", set to "1". Like this:

Outside of the tavern? No. There're no trees within the Outer Bailey at all, and the ground is completely paved in cobblestone.

We'll go with the Realm having, mysteriously, the same basic calendar as the real world, in terms of months. I'll say it's about mid-March right now.

GM, 80 posts Keeper of Games Borderline Insane Sat 25 Jan 2020 at 23:46 | ... now in the proper thread ... OOPS ...Things Learned ...
Though everyone certainly looked into the records available through the academy for whatever could be learned about the area, for the msot part you came up empty-handed, learning no new details of the area; there just haven't been many reports from the Keep, as it's still fairly new - less than twenty years old.
[Secret to Montana James: However, you did come across reports, most of them predating the Keep itself, that suggest the caves hold tribes of several different creatures. There was no suggestion as to why they would willingly live so close together, however.]
[Secret to lvellios Morthykes: However, you did come across a few scattered accounts of Lizard-men preying on merchants and travellers, and apparently making their home in the marshes nearby.]
... and Things Overheard
Fortunately, during your time in the Tavern, listening to the townsfolk, you have managed to glean a scrap or two of gossip which is likely to be much more current.
[Secret to Mando: Apparently, a guy heard from his wife that a friend had overheard some merchant guards talking about a maiden taken prisoner, and being held for ransom by one of the tribes in the Caves.]
[Secret to Kenemon: While making a brief trip to empty your bladder, you overheard someone emphatically saying they felt bad for your group, "especially the young one" - because nobody has ever gone to the caves, and returned to tell the tale!]
[Secret to Montana James: At the next table, a woman spins a tale about Bugbears living in the Caves; apparently, a merchant wagon escaped an attack because the Bugbears are deathly afraid of Dwarves, so when the Dwarf guard jumped out from under his wagon, screaming bloody murder and brandishing an axe, the Bugbears all turned and ran!]
[Secret to lvellios Morthykes: You overhear a whispered conversation about the horrible fates that can befall men who meddle with strange altars.]

GM, 87 posts Keeper of Games Borderline Insane Sun 26 Jan 2020 at 17:45 | ... now in the proper thread ... OOPS ...Yes, but not in a separate room; they have a couple wooden tubs, which can be brought into a private room if desired. Water can be heated in a kettle by the fire, and there's a hand-pump just outside the inn door to fill it from. A couple buckets for carrying it, too.
Keep in mind, by the way, that not all of the things you've learned are necesarily true, just as not all of them are necessarily untrue. :)
