[OOC] First Steps
So, new scene!

One thing Kenemon - well, all of you somewhat, but mostly Kenemon - will need to decide, is what do do about Shabaka, Kug'no, and Kig'ru; Shabaka will face danger at your side (I'm using the Sidekick rules for him), but the Kobolds won't - they'd be worse than useless.  And also, Shabaka's just a kid, roughly the equivalent of a 13yo in human terms.

[OOC] First Steps
.... there is no coffee.  IRL, Coffee originated in Ethiopia and was brought to Europe by way of Arabia.  That hasn't happened, even in parallel, in this world.  Indeed, teh earliest credible evidence of drinking coffee comes from the 1400s.

It didn't arrive in England - the closest parallel, IMO, to the Realm - until the late 1500s or mid 1600s.

The Realm is still maybe in the equivalent of the 1200s, I'd say.

...

There's no tea, either.

Also no chocolate.

No noodles (unless I decide to drop the invention of those on Elves or Dwarves, maybe).

No ketchup (Chinese invention, "ketsia" - originally fish, not tomatoes).

Basically, anything from outside of Europe and the Mediterranian doesn't yet exist, with Egypt being currently the sole exception, in the form of Ta-Senet.

And no, Dewayne, the Egyptians didn't have coffee.

...

Indeed, it is theorized that the introduction of stimulant drinks like coffee and tea to Europe helped kick-start the Renaissance, as people would be, well, stimulated, rather than mildly drunk all the time.

That menu item, "Small Beer" ...?  It's literally a 1:1 mix of beer and water.  WATER wasn't generally fit to drink, people didn't know yet about boiling it to kill any illnesses it carried.  But the alcohol in the beer?  Killed everything right quick, rendering it safe to drink.  I had Shabaka - as I said above, pretty much equal to a 13yo kid - order a Small Beer and get nary a glance over it, because yes, it was something given to children.  Like, even 6 and 8 year old children.

...

The dark ages were ... unpleasant, in a whole lot of ways.  We are, by comparison, downright spoiled.  ^_^

Yep, they would be.  And, I should add cider to the menu, come to think of it.  :)

Anyway, RN just waiting to give Craigery a fair chance to chime in if he wants to (and his flue/cold/whatever lets him be lucid enough).  I'll move things forward later tonight, either way.  Game's been moving a bit fast for him to keep up, so the occasional pause-for-breath won't hurt, I think.

Oh, and Kenemon: I filled in some dialog as requested, and also corrected the name you used.  The older kobold is Kig'ro. :)

Sure.  Or wine, beer, a nice hot tisane.  Just, um, there's no coffee.

There's a road.

It sucks, but, it's kind of hard to get lost if you keep the road in sight.

OTOH, you might miss out on a lot of stuff - encounters, XP, loot - if you DON'T leave the road at some point.

...

Also, honestly it'd be pretty hard to get completely, irrevocably lost, even if you stray really far from the road.  If you check the game map, the one in hexes?  Each hex is 100 yards across, so about 17.5 hexes is one mile.  The map itself isn't hella huge, IOW.  Just heading back north or south (as appropriate) will eventually bring you back to the road.

Well, TBF, this is some pretty old-growth forest around here, so figuring out North or South might take a bit of doing, at least in the more heavily forested places (anything in darker green) where you're less able to judge the direction of sunrise.

But even so, the odds of getting utterly lost are probably, maybe, on the low-ish side.  GM-vagueness aside, less than 50% except in highly unusual circumstances.  Less than 10% on a "permanent" or long-term basis, for sure.

It's the frontier, not (quite) a trackless wilderness.

Mando:

Vehicle proficiency will only come up if there's something particularly difficult to deal with (fording a river, a chase, repairing or replacing a broken wheel, etc).  For general point the wagon that-a-way and get moving stuff, no roll - and thus, no proficiency - is needed.
