Chiren II

Adjective: Chiren
Aphelion: .97 AU
Orbit: 382 D
Day Length: 25.2 hours
Satellites: 3
Gravity: .95 G
Continents: 4
Hydrosphere: 85% water
Volume: .102 Earths

Capitol: Newsun City (Population 3.3m)
World population: 543m
Primary Language: Standard (99.9%)
Government: Planetary Council, parliamentary democracy
Population: Chiren 97%, Xophan 2.5%, 0.5% other
Religion: None 30%, CDJ 15%, Universalist 15%, Solan 25%, Koja 10%, Other 5%
Exports: Microelectronics, Jirite Ore, Gargantua research data

History: Chiren II was a lost colony; the original records of the colony's landing were destroyed along with the original capitol, Crater City, in the Gargantua Rising of 2562.  The colony's government has been remarkably stable; this has been attributed to the continuing threat of Gargantua attacks providing a sense of national unity.

Chiren are believed to be of a mutated human stock; it is believed that Chiren II was originally colonized by refugees of the Mad Science Wars, looking for an environment where their small size did not disadvantage them compared to other humans.  (This scale issue is why Chiren II has the largest Xophan population outside of Xophan colonies; their shared trait with Chiren of tails is believed to also be a factor.)

Chiren II is known to have at one point had a native sapient species, but they appear to be extinct, perhaps wiped out by the Gargantuas.  They were known to have been a similar size to the Chiren, however.

Chiren II is the origin point of the Koja faith, as well as the residence of virtually all practitioners.  This is not surprising, as a religion based upon prayer and sacrifice to avert the wrath of semi-divine beings-- the Gargantua-- will have little reason to develop a foothold on worlds that lack these beings.

Koja is a religion derived from Solan practices, but while worship of the primary of Chiren through the traditional radio-broadcast prayers is a normal sacrament, a much more significant aspect of the religion is worship/veneration of the Gargantuas of Chiren II.  Worship consists of prayers (to avert the wrath of the Gargantua) and sacrifice for the same purpose; rumors of human sacrifice persist, but have never been proven.

Koja practitioners (Kojas) often regard the Gargantuas as creations of the Stars intended to punish the Chiren for hubris or for destruction of nature; one sub-sect, the Fatalists, holds that it is the duty of the Chiren to simply accept the depredations of the Gargantuas.  Most sects, however, view the Gargantuas as too unstoppable for resistance to be a factor in correct behavior.  Kojas are split on the issue of the Titan Corps-- transfer of the power of the Gargantuas to mere mortals is a controversial practice.  A significant minority, mostly Fatalists, regard the process as blasphemous; a larger fraction instead regards the Titan Corps members as semi-divine beings.  Most prefer to ignore the issue.

It is noteworthy that the Titan Corps Insignia is extremely similar to the Koja holy symbol; both are derived from the extinct Chiren civilization's known writings, and it is believed to signify the Gargantuas.
