Latharl's Lantern

Latharl's Lantern

Secluded by its marshy environs and overshadowed by the dangerous Troll Hills to the north, Lathtarl’s Lantern is a quiet fishing village on the Sword Coast. The village of Lathar's Lantern is sheltered on the north by a crescent-shaped, rocky ridge. At the seaward end of this ridge are some tidal caves, the innermost of which has been enlarged and connected by winding stone stair tunnels to a small-spired temple to Umberlee on the surface, The Grotto of the Queen. The mouth of the Winding Water is shallow and marshy, without any harbor and the miles upon miles of silt and marsh grasses to the south are home to many tribes of lizard men. Frequent raids from the lizardfolk have kept Lathtarl’s Lantern militiamen busy and have kept the town from growing.

Latharl's Lantern

The Wailing Wave

One of the businesses in Latharl's Lantern is the Wailing Wave, an inn and tavern.  It is little more than a roadhouse that offers little comfort but the taproom is packed night after night with boatloads of pirates, illicit merchants, and other unsavory adventurers that gather to drink, place & collect bets, and otherwise conduct business.

The Wailing Wave Inn is a rugged, two-story building made of weathered timber and situated on the edge of Latharl's Lantern, overlooking the village's piers. The taproom inside is dimly lit, with low, exposed beams overhead and rough-hewn wooden tables and chairs that have seen better days. It has a distinct maritime theme, with nets, harpoons, and seafaring memorabilia adorning the walls.

Innkeeper: Jareth "Grizzled" Halden, a gruff and barrel-chested man with a bushy beard and a perpetually scowling expression. Jareth is known for his no-nonsense attitude and a unique policy of serving only the cheapest spirits, making him unpopular among the patrons, but they keep coming back for the deals.

Latharl's Lantern

Latharl's Lantern lies on the Sword Coast equidistant between Baldur's Gate and Waterdeep.  Just outside of this small village there is a notorious prison where disgraced nobles, murderers and other criminals are held.  It is the kind of place the Lords' Alliance will send someone when they need to be forgotten about.

The Forsaken Keep

The Forsaken Keep, located on the outskirts of Latharl's Lantern, is a grim and imposing fortress-like structure made of black, weathered stone. Surrounded by high, foreboding walls and a deep, dark moat, the prison appears both impenetrable and haunting. The air around it is thick with an air of desolation and despair, as though the very stones of the prison hold the echoes of past torments.

The prison is run by Warden Thorne, a tall and severe figure with close-cropped, salt-and-pepper hair. He possesses a sharp, hawk-like gaze and rarely smiles. His stern demeanor and cold, calculating mannerisms have earned him a reputation for being unyielding and unforgiving.

The prison guards are known as the "The Iron Watch." They wear steel-plated armor and bear silvered spears, and helmets concealing their faces. Their cold, unyielding demeanor reflects their training and the oppressive atmosphere of the Forsaken Keep.

In addition to the Iron Watch, the Forsaken Keep is rumored to be protected by a powerful magical ward called the "Soulbound Chains." Woven into the very stone and iron of the prison, these chains are said to immobilize any escapees by sapping their strength and willpower. When activated by Warden Thorne, the soulbound chains can shackle and incapacitate even the most formidable foes, preventing them from setting foot off of the grounds and making the prison seemingly impervious to rescue attempts.

In addition to any number of murderers, vagabonds and other mundane criminals, the Forsaken Keep is rumored to have the following two prisoners:

1. Lady Seraphina Ravenscroft: A disgraced noblewoman accused of treason and plotting against the Lords' Alliance, Lady Seraphina is a striking, raven-haired beauty who maintains an air of defiance despite her imprisonment. She is rumored to have hidden secrets that could unravel the power structure of the region.

2. Kaelor the Bloodletter: Once a notorious assassin responsible for a string of gruesome murders along the Sword Coast, Kaelor is infamous for his merciless tactics. He is a burly, heavily scarred half-orc with a dark beard, known to be exceptionally skilled in combat and evasion.
