Headin' South (Rod & Roberta)

With John' guidance Roberta navigated a series of twisting, turning state highways, county roads, and country back roads until the little convoy of vehicles emerged in a small town on a low mountain. The day was fading away fast and the kids had been bugging her to pull over so they could use the restroom and stretch their legs for over an hour.

After all the months it was still a shock to realize that all the driving around hordes, road blocks, accidents, and suspected traps took hours to cover what normally would take an hour to drive. The little town was named Henagar, Alabama and to call it small was being generous. Just off of state route 40, they pulled into the Mapco. It was next door to Bama Boys BBQ and across the road from Swifty's service station.

There wasn't much in the way of signs of previous activity. The state route was a two lane highway that was pretty free of stopped cars or roadblocks. The stores and shops were all boarded over. There wasn't bodies everywhere rotting away and the air was clear. The only sign of any official action here was a single poster hanging on the front of the Mapco that read:
      Official Ordnance #112
    Mayor Robert Sheppard orders all
residents to clear out of the town
    immediately and proceed to the
FEMA refugee center located in Trenton
Georgia. The US Army will provide
   security and medical assistance there.
Thank you, we will organize to leave
from the high school parking lot Saturday
morning at 10AM, please be ready by noon.

"Rod," Roberta said over the radio, "we'll hole up here for the night.  If everyone evacuated this far off the beaten trail, there probably aren't that many infected around.

"I'll get our crank pump working to refill the tanks while you take some people to look around.  Find us somewhere to spend the night."

"Got it." Rod replied over the radio. He sees who wants to come with to find a secure location. Worse comes to worse they find a spot with just a few of the shamblers and take them out quietly.
