Re: ABILITY SCORES

I'm still trying to figure out the magic system of 5th edition.   It reminds me of the old Basic amd 1st edition rules of "you just find some magic items"

yeah, agree to disagree.
the above listed reasons are the biggest reasons why i don't use pathfinder when i run games.

it is always better to have more options then less

I have characters with 3 pages of skills because there is a difference between (craft basket weaving) and (craft rattan furniture), and (craft reed-boat)

just as there is a difference in general metal working and working with specific metals (gold/silver/copper/brass/iron/etc)

However there is such a thing as general or specialized knowledge and transferable skills
Craft /profession skills still allow you to pick as many options as you like:
So yes you can still pick all those options it just looks something like this
Craft (alchemy)
Craft ( armor)
Craft (poison)
Craft ( weapons)

Or maybe if it’s just a single point in three different ones
Profession (barber, soldier, sailor, herbalist)

No rule prevents you doing any of that

It is true a metallurgist may not actually know how to weld; and vice versa

I don't understand the need for most of the skills or how finely they are split. The game is supposed to be about adventurous events happening to adventurers who are out on an adventure so who cares about basket weaving or furniture making? Being able to make a boat could be useful but the other things don't seem to be worth anyone taking the time to record on their character sheet.

SPlit the metalworking into precious and practical metals and be done with it.

Re: ABILITY SCORES

re: the skill list character sheet

the GM at the time was playing with the idea of a (class-less) (level less) system where everything was a skill check.

there was no xp handed out just skill points so

will save...skill check

attack...skill check

ac...skill check

not my favorite system; but it was fun to have an infinite amount of options and the ability to invent new skills. it was an attempt to replicate (sword art online) where everything is skill based.

Re: ABILITY SCORES

I usually prefer a game with a bunch of pick-and-choose skills rather than classes and levels but not with so many fine subdivisions and things not related to adventure and excitement. For example, the goldsmithing from earlier; to be a skilled goldsmith requires years of study and apprenticing along with a collection of expensive, delicate tools. I doubt someone would be able to have any real skill in that profession while also being a combat trained swordsman, wizard, priest of some god, etc.

Re: ABILITY SCORES

In reply to Clover (msg # 215):

that sounds like a decent system.

As for skills, ya. I agree. why does carpentry, wood working, chiseling, and boat making all need to be different?

Perhaps if one wants to insist on it, they could at least use an expanded synergy system. every related skill give s +2 or +3, up to like half the highest synergy skill.

That way if i want to make a bow but all I have is spear carving and boat making I can at least maybe get a +4 rather then a big fat 0.
this is why i tend to get things like jack of all trades. Just drop that and then comfortably focus on the important skills like stealth and perception... never have to worry again.

"ah, but do you have the skill"

"no, but fuck you cause i can roll anyways... and with a modifier"

Re: ABILITY SCORES

I think I get it!!!!!
So if I want to make boats, shields, axes, totems, bowls, holy symbols,  clothing, gear and have sailing, navigation and survival skills I would just put my ranks into:
Profession (Viking)

; )

I would let a person use profession solidier to make survival, healing, etc rolls
Probably just cap the difficulty of what can be done with it

So profession herbalist can make minor poisons, minor alchemy items, etc

It was fun but the dice mechanics were complicated.

But I don't want to distract from this game by discussion of it here.

Sorry, gang. A bunch of people at my work are under quarantine for Covid so I have been working lots of o.t. covering for them. Should have time and be awake to resume posting in a couple of days.
