quote:
A shadowpath is a fissure in a reality that connects it to another shadow. They usually exist on the ground, but sea and river paths are not uncommon, and even air paths can be found occasionally. Shadowpaths can only be perceived by shadowalkers or through the use of some magical or technological means. However, even if one cannot perceive a path, he can travel it, depending on the strength of the fissure. Weak shadowpaths can be crossed thousands of times by shadow dwellers and not transport them anywhere. These paths can only be used by shadowalkers or someone in their company. Stronger fissures will transport anyone who sets foot on them more often than not and the stable ones functions all the time for everybody or everything.
A shadowpath that is not used will fade with time. This is a slow process -- it may take centuries or even thousands of years --, but it happens. Any use, especially by shadowalkers, strengthens the path, the more frequent the travel, the stronger the effect. Longstanding routes with an almost constant traffic are considered stable, meaning they will never fade, even if all travel through them ceased. Some scholars believe this is an exaggeration and that such paths would eventually fade, but only after millions of years. They concede, however, that the practical effect is the same. Lack of use is not the only way to disrupt or destroy a shadowpath, shadowstorms can change, redirect and, in some cases, wipe them out.
A shadowpath can lead from one shadow into another and end. To leave the latter reality, one would have to backtrack or search another path. It can also run through several shadows continuously. In this case, when the traveler reaches the desired plane, he steps off the path. Traveling through a shadowpath takes time, not only because of the physical distance involved, but also because a path is not necessarily a direct route. It may wind and turn before reaching its destination, even if the shadows being connected are close together.
