Out and About in The Root

The three guys manage to get their belongings stowed away in their respective room and all cleaned up in the manner they saw fit. Booth was nearly vibrating with anticipation as he waited at the door to the manor. Once his two other soon to be partners in crime were ready they departed and headed out into The Root.

The night was brisk with a good wind blowing in from the slopes of Urngor Jool (aka Howling Devil Mountain) but the coolness in the air does nothing to diminish Booths quest for night life. As the three walk through the streets they are met with everything from sideways looks to straight up stares. It was obvious they stood out but no one was rude or confrontational. It couldn't be helped but to notice two well armed soldiers that seemed to always be just behind them, one elf and one dwarf. They were being chaperoned but this dispatch of soldiers did nothing to restrict the wanderings of the trio.

After some inquiring, the three find their way to a large square building with the sound of music coming from inside. There's an oak and brass sign hanging above the door, "The Brass Tankard". The three stand outside for a moment before entering the establishment and the other two can't help but notice the wide boyish grin on Booth's face.

In you go....shenagahans await.

Out and About in The Root

Although a Goliath, which are prevelant here in the valley so not as unusual as one might think, Jurassic's mode of dress made him stick out: a puffy sleeved douvlet, a kilt, and knee high boots wasn't exactly cutting edge fashion outside of dragonborn enclaves which are more than a thousand miles from his current location. The hip bag which most nobles who wore kilts carried held his money. He walked with hands behind his back until Booth stopped. He had found what he was looking for it seemed. Jurassic ducked to entered the building. Whatever he found he kept his face impassive. He found a seat on the floor at the table Booth choose and watched the door for the soldiers.

Out and About in The Root

Booth prepped by dunking his head in water and slicking his hair back.  He retrieved his one spare shirt that hadn’t seen battle yet.  It was fairly clean and a giant improvement over the ripped, blood stained one.  He sniffed a pit, shrugged and called it good.  A deep long kiss for Elodie that should leave her mind reeling and tide her over for the evening and he was ready to go.

The sailor wasn’t bothered in the least with their chaperone.  He even gave them nicknames so they could take part as well.  “I’m going to call you Gimli and you Legolas.  Ok gentlemen, where can we sample some music and fine Dwarven spirits?”
As they walked, he tried to get Gimli or Legolas to open up a bit.  “How did you guys come to work together?”

Booth was as bothered by the stares as he was of the honor guard.  He met each look with a friendly smile and a nod.  This might be the first encounter with the southern people for many of these folk.  If Booth was going to find himself back here, he wanted it to be a friendly port of call.

The Brass Tankard sounded like a promising name.  That was the name of a right proper tavern.  The sound of music helped too.  Here people came for entertainment, not to drink their miseries away in silence.  It looked like a good start.  “Good call Gimli.”
The sailor entered with said grin on his face and took stock of the room.

At the selected table, he waited to see if a server came over.  He spoke to Browden and Tauroak.  “So what do you guys do for fun?”

Jurassic, with a deadpan and totally serious expression, "I picture how I will kill him. I take great pleasure in imagining his murder."

“Ooooff.  Ok.  We’ve got some work to do.  First, don’t worry, we’ll get him.  You can explain all the ways later.  But he’s not here right now and you need to direct all that energy somewhere else for tonight.  Let your brain rest and have fun.  You’ll perform better.  At least it works for me.  Have you ever had a drink before?”  He wasn’t much to look at.  Not the biggest human.  Certainly not the strongest.  Others would quickly jump up and say he wasn’t the smartest,  But Booth was scrappy and had an impressive resume of wins to his name now.  So something was working.

Tauroak smiled at Jurassic's answer to Booth's question. "He's a hunter. There's nothing wrong with a man taking pleasure in the hunt. Most of my fun can be found outside of buildings and city walls. I enjoy a good hunt myself, but experiencing the world in new ways or new points of view has been my favorite. Becoming a member of a pack and running with the wolves. The always hungry, always hunting pace of the allosaurus. Riding the current of a rushing river as a small fish, or watching the world sideways or upside down in the dangling form of a spider. Soon, I hope to take the skies as well, to see the world from above. My duties keep me busy, so finding time to pursue fun in other surroundings can be a challenge at times."

"When I do find myself in a city, for more than just restocking supplies, I generally spend my time in a tavern such a this, listening to the songs and stories of those talented enough to share. And you?"

Out and About in The Root

The room is filled with patrons of both elf and dwarf. It glows the warm color of firelight reflected off old wood. The sounds of a small group of minstrels fills the air giving it a festive feel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyg5jJrZ42s

The smells of the ale and the smoke full your lungs. While the patrons look in your direction it is but briefly before they continue their conversations again and laughter and merry talk fills the room.

Very shortly after sitting down a dwarven barmaid comes your way. Her short stature is fully compensated for by the size of her ample breasts swaying away to the rhythm of her steps.
"An' what can I get for you fellows. Welcome to The Root."

"So you can literally become anything you want?  Huh..."  That was an interesting way to experience the world.  Booth wasn't sure it was for him.  To change into something else just seemed unnatural to him.

"Sounds like you have all this freedom, why are there 'duties' involved?"  Living up here, enjoying nature.  Tauroak made it sound more like a job than a vacation.

The barmaid arrived and Booth took a moment from the conversation.  He smiled the biggest smile, "Thank you for the kind welcome.  I've sampled plenty of swill from down south.  I hear dwarves make the best.  A round for us please."  He includes Legolas and Gimli if they entered the tavern.

“No alcohol?”  Booth was surprised.  He expected a hunter to want to take a break.  Kind of like the sailor coming in from a long time on the sea to unwind.

“Ok.  So your every thought is on your goal.  What happens when that’s done?  Who is Jurassic?  What will you do?”  A tough nut, but there had to be something more to the Goliath.

Jurassic gave a single terse nod, "None. I tend to lose my temper when I drink and for someone like me, losing one's temper is not a luxury affordable."

To Booth's second question he thought very long and hard. "I had not thought it possible, until meeting all of you, that an after I faced my foe would even be possible. I enjoy quiet contemplative study. I have the opposite view of Zoccola, I believe that death is what gives life meaning and seeking an honorable death is the ultimate goal of life. This may not be what you want to hear, Captain, but it is the truth."

"Not quite anything that I want, but well enough to be adaptable to most situations that I need. The things I can do, I can do because of the druidic Circle that I am sworn to. My freedom is bought by ensuring the freedom of others."

Tauroak listened to Jurassic's story, understanding and agreeing with most of what he had said, "If you begin to get a bit out of hand, I can turn you into a turtle and then flip you over onto your back to see that you don't hurt anyone. If you would like to partake, that is."

Jurassic's address to Booth drew Tauroak's curiosity, "Captain? They mentioned you were a sailor, but I don't recall that particular title being mentioned."

"Ah."  Booth responded with a nod to Jurrasic's reasoning for not drinking.  "Very sensible."

"I hear you.  Not about the quiet study mind you.  I'll leave that to you guys.  For me it's an honorable fight.  To stand face-to-face with an opponent and have a proper scrap.  For him to yield when he knows he is beat.  Or to find someone so good they amaze me and whoop me good.  While death isn't necessary, if I've got to go, it'd better be to someone who was better than me and not be stabbed in the back or something."  He nodded in respect to Jurrasic's code.

He turned and listened to Tauroak.  "Freedom of others.  Seems we have that in common.  Ah yes, Captain Booth Braedon, at your service."  Booth gave a bow to Tauroak.  He waved off the title.  "What's with a title?  Just puts a target on your back.  Besides, look at me now.  I'm staring at a mountain instead of the open sea."

"So what's this about a turtle?  You can change other people too?!?"  He was suddenly thinking these giant worms or this Giant might not be such a problem after all.  Maybe a nice fat lamb or a tuna.  Then they could eat well after vanquishing a foe.

Tauroak shrugged, "Still, it's not a title that is just freely handed out to anyone who wants it. It's one that carries a bit of weight, and hints at stories to be told. But, for the rest, I do catch your point there."

"Aye, the transformations I can do to myself are magical in nature, but not based in spellwork. Doing it to other people though, that does require crafting a spell. If I change myself, I can keep the effect going for nearly four hours, or until the form is beaten enough to force me back to myself. The spell will only last for an hour, and I have to focus on the spell the whole time in order to maintain the effect. The spell allows for more variation too, though; I can change someone into a form capable of flight with it. So there are benefits and drawbacks to both. Both effects require a living target, as life energy is what sparks the change, but outside of the foundation they both have their own boundaries."

"Very well good sirs, right away," the buxom dwarf barmaid smiled and nodded with a wink in Tauroak's direction. She scooted through the crowd with practiced ease and returned shortly afterward with drink. A big jug of dwarven ale and two glasses. In front of Jurrasic she placed a large glass of frothy liquid. On inspection it smelled of ginger and taking a small drink it was perhaps the very best beverage he has ever had.

The trio exchange conversation for a while and enjoy the environment and drink before them. It was easily noticed that indeed the two soldiers were sitting in a chair near the door to the tavern. They drank nothing and watched as unobtrusively as they could.

The minstrels played a mix of lively music and favorites of the patrons none of which Booth or Jurrasic had heard before. Tauroak nodded once in a while when a familiar tune from years ago was played.

At one point in th evening a short thin looking elf walked up to the small stage and spoke with them for a while. He then took his place front and center and with a wave of his have the musicians began to play a tune decidedly different from what they had been playing so far this evening.

Out and About in The Root

As the song ends the taverns bursts into applause. Call to the minstrel ring through the air,"Another Elshrin! Another!"

The tiny elf takes a bow. His eyes dart over in Booths direction and a small smile flashes across his face.

"We have guests in our midst. Perhaps one of them would like to provide some small entertainment? Now that would just be fookin' grand would it not?"

His smile grows to practically engulf his face and his eyes twinkle as he winks towards the sailor.
