Re: (OOC) General Discussion
I love it!
I purposely introduced this to hopefully create a Moral quandary.
In regards to Alignments.
There are four powers constantly at war in the cosmos, on the world, and in the mortal's soul. Good, Evil, Law, and Chaos.
Law, all life is to be governed by a set of rules, codes, and principles. Law at its absolutes will not tolerate the breaking of oaths, laws, commands, and contracts, etc. Great examples of this are Devils and Angels.
Chaos, there are no bonds of what space, time, nor material can do. Ultimate anarchy and absolute freedom, nothing will tie them down, it is not lying if the very nature of chaos is to not commit. Examples of this are Demons and Fey.
Good, is an abstract view of morality. To be good means put life above all other desires. To love your neighbor even as to one's self, no greater love does a man have than to put his own life to save another. Charity, kindness beyond the thought of selfish desire. The essence of good is impossible to reach. No God, nor celestial has ever and will ever reach this. The angels though considered "Good" begin to think in such absolutes to feel and seem to mortals as selfish, corrupt, and wicked.
Evil, the abstract view of morality opposite to Good. The absence of life, all inner desires no matter the end is to be desired. The very act of killing and draining all hope, life, kindness, and faith from the worlds. Devils, demons, and many fey can be considered evil. Though, once again, to be pure evil is nearly impossible. Devils and Demons my seem this way, but they will protect their soldiers and hold back absolute destruction. Their selfish nature, and in fact turn them from being pure evil, what fun is being evil if there is nothing alive to be evil too.
I believe all people in real life contain all four of these powers and so then do all player characters. The choice of alignment is to help guide your roleplaying of that character. You, nor your character can live in absolutes. Where classes require a code of conduct, I strictly enforce this. Example; Paladins. But, all other classes and races, will choose what's best for them at the moment, or how they live their lives, as I believe many real people would do also. Don't allow the alignment to choose for you, allow the alignment to create drama in the group and within your self.

As for the Goblins, out of Character. They were summoned during the second planes war by wizards as meat shields and vanguard against the planes. After the war, Goblins, Bugbears, Gnolls, Ogres, and Hobgoblins (many others that I can't think of right now) were hunted down and killed after their usefulness wore off, however, there was too many and they spread like wildfire all over the world. They are evil. They care only for themselves and will kill and destroy all other life if given the chance. With this stated, they are not against negotiations and making deals with other races. They are not mindless creatures that attack with abandon, they reason, and strategies. In the last few centuries, the major races have begun to treat them differently believing they deserve a chance. Could circumstances and environment change to make them not "evil"? Possibly.
As for this, I leave it up to you. If one of you were a Paladin Oath of Devotion, I would say they killing the goblin women and children would be against that paladin's oath. As they, though evil, are defenseless, women, and children.
I hope this answers your questions. The last statement, I like to play in a world where things are more gray, then black and white.

Orcs are not in this group and are considered completely different.
