Emberdell

Emberdell

A small town of no more than 1200 people, Emberdell is found on the southeastern end of the Kellisan mountains, north of Tharumar. Emberdell is an independent town, not owing fealty to anyone. They trade freely with Tharumar, Kellak-Oshar, and Lonn-Gashar, having infrequent contact with the other cities due to the large distances. While not opposed to elves, there is no trade with Lae-Lah-Ran because the forest domain's borders are closed.

History: The Sentinels

Three centuries ago, during the human war for colonization, there travelled a group of adventurers who went by the name of The Sentinels. They consisted of a mix of individuals, as these things go, elves, dwarves, and humans. They dealt mostly with border incursions and other mystical threats.

One of the most renown story is their defeat of Jomakarr, a green-scaled dragon, that had been terrorizing the country side near the north-eastern shores for several years, demanding tribute in gold and other treasures, and razing the country side if her demands were not met. Other stories tell of their engagements with bands of ogres, giants from the mountains, and even a venture into the underground vaults of the dwarves at Karak-Dun in order to defeat an infestation of unliving spirits.

It is speculated that the elven members are still be alive and somewhere in Karanos, considering the life expectancy of elves in general. The dwarves may still remain alive. There is no doubt that the human members have been deceased for centuries by now.

A number of rumors have followed their stories and passing. The first and foremost is that the group split apart after a failed romance between two of the members, with acrimony resulting from the fallout. It is speculated that they excavated a number of orc relics, along with several other precursor artifacts, but that they never claimed or used them. The reason for that is presently unknown. Finally, a set of rumors set late in the war puts the Sentinels at the same place as the opposing orc general, cooperating with him in an undisclosed venture. This led to their branding as traitors and subsequent persecution by the Ragalian authorities.

The Sentinels made a few more appearances after the war, although their whereabouts remained unknown for most of the following years. There were several unsubstantiated accounts from travelers and lore masters claiming to have met one or more of the survivors of the band decades after the war. But such accounts have no information on their locations (and no further research is possible without those leads). The mentions tell of continued efforts on the part of the Sentinels to fight unknown threats to Karanos. Lastly, a few rumors place the Sentinels as participating in the War of the Bones against Xaramandus the Lich. Key assaults and the defeat of powerful undead creatures are attributed to their efforts in the fight. That was 148 years ago.

The Sentinels identified themselves by a shield of white with three silver maple leaves pointing at the center.

Karanos Flora (lethal)

The Karanos Skymarrow

The Emerald Skymarrows is a very rare species of plants that are very aggressive, as plants go. The typical adult skymarrow hovers around 5 to 6 feet in height, with a flower head that resembles a sunflower, but usually 4 to 5 times as large. It has a strong thick stem and an extensive set of shallow roots that easily reaches as far out as 10 feet. It is a carnivorous plant, feeding off insects and small animals, but is capable of felling a grown man if they are approached without caution.

Skymarrows are capable of projecting exuberant fumes at a short distance. Anyone caught unawares inhaling these fumes may be rendered unconscious. Once incapable of resistance, the skymarrows wrap their prey with their roots and drain it of vital fluids. The roots are remarkably strong, but not exceptionally resilient, which makes getting trapped in them the only real concern.

However, that is not their only method of defense. The plants are capable of launching a volley of piercing seeds from their bulbs as well, which burst open to release a corrosive compound. This corrosive fluid is able to render grievous injury to flesh and bone alike, and is a defensive weapon the plants only use in last resort situations.

One of the most remarkable aspects of these plants is that they are actually mobile. If they detect no prey in the vicinity for a short number of days, they are capable of uprooting themselves and moving to another area. They move slowly, but as long as they have soil beneath them, they can re-root and continue their life cycle.

Anyone encountering these plants is advised to stay at a safe distance, at least 20 yards away. If there is a need to approach, it is recommended that you go by at a run, as their reactions are slow. They can be removed like any other weed infestation: by cutting them down (not advised) or by starving them. The greater opinion is that they need to be burned away as soon as possible in order to prevent their spore release, which brings on the next generation of skymarrows.

Skymarrow compounds and powdered root are often used in alchemical mixtures, and fetch a profit when sold to the right buyer.

The Emerald variety is one of the more "docile" versions of these plants. The Crimson one is known to able to project its corrosive compound into the air, which bursts into flame once in the open, causing severe burns to its prey. The Quartz version is found in caves and has incorporated arcane elements into its biology from rooting into veins of crystals. It has adapted to its underground environment by using its corrosive compounds to dissolve rock and minerals, which it feeds on. It is capable of releasing its seeds as arcane projectiles, and is by far the most dangerous, and mobile, of all the Skymarrow varieties. It is rumored that the Quartz Skymarrow is cunning enough to be considered almost "intelligent". Fortunately, it is only found underground as bright light causes it to become severely lethargic.
