Re: Tyranny of Dragons: Episode 1: Greenest in Flames
Newmanfelt the impact, though he hardly gave more than a grunt.  The energy of his rage was not available to lessen these impacts, though he was still one tough creature.  For the briefest instant his eyes flickered as if trying to change color, but they remained blue.  Still the barbarian warforged seemed to read the sense of urgency here and threw caution to the wind in his attack effort this time.  He was all in trying to take down the foes as quickly as they could so they could effect the rescue.

The cultist before him felt the wrath of the mighty maul Newman held.  The heavy weapon hit true with vicious energy behind it.  Newman turned to the last cultist--the man not looking all that healthy at the moment he noted.  The maul clutched at the ready in his large three fingered hands he waited for the next opening to attack...  ...should it be necessary.

Banelin walks through the corpses of the slain kobolds and with a hefty swing, decapitates the last of the cultist in this area,"Their we go, all foes dispatched before they could call reinforcements." he chuckles to himself and walks towards the door,"Hello, is everyone still alive, we've been sent here from the keep and are here to escort you all out." he shouts towards the door, he also knocks at it so they can hear him.

Re: Tyranny of Dragons: Episode 1: Greenest in Flames
The rear door doesn't seem to be barricaded, and falls open at Banelin's knock. When the villagers inside are in a near panicked state. They shy away from the heroes as they enter, and a few more scramble away dragging children in town.

A younger villager scampers across the room towards the heavier crowd crying out "They're inside! They've broken through the back! We're all going to die!"

Through all of the activity, and the young man's screams of terror, a steady, regimented, and thunderous crash can be heard against the barricaded front doors. The barricade thrown up by the panicked villagers appears to be holding, for now, but the barricade of pews and furniture surges slightly with each crash against the doors.

Banelin pushes through the panicked civilians and stands at the front door,"Everyone, calm down, we've been sent by the Keep to escort you all out of here. We need your cooperation to follow that ranger over their, you'll also be accompanied by our spellcasters for support and us combat oriented folks will deal with those raiders that are ramming the barricade, if they were to break in of course. We are not your enemy, we're here to help."

Re: Tyranny of Dragons: Episode 1: Greenest in Flames
Newman follows after Banelin into the church and takes a moment to survey the scene.  The barriers moving caught his attention.  The warforged face shifted to a frown as he noted the slight movement with each strike against it.

"We need time?  I make time."  Then the hulking machine like creature announced as he marched right past the panicked villagers and even Banelin.  He approached the front door barricade inside the church.  He dug his heels into the floor and pushed back against the barricade with all his might trying to hold it closed and keep them from barging in anytime soon.

"Maybe we get everyone ready to move?"  Newman queried his companions as he held with all his might against the onslaught.

Re: Tyranny of Dragons: Episode 1: Greenest in Flames
The regimented bashing continues on the barrier, but the flex certainly seems less powerful with the warforged pressing against it.

The citizens, however, are a panicked mass that seem to give Banelin no attention whatsoever. However, almost like an eye in the storm. There is a perfectly calm half-elven man in robes, the color of Chauntea, carefully calming those closest to him.

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
So the barrier's survival is based on hit points, though I believe that's a super clever way to try to stall them, and therefore will add your roll to the HP of the barrier.  I believe you guys received the name of the priest at the keep. His name is Eadyan Falconmoon. Banelin, if you want to try to calm them on your own, with your post, you can make a charisma check with advantage.

"Everyone please leave towards the back door in an orderly manner." Banelin says, trying his best to calm the masses down and then spots the calm priest and heads towards him,"Hey, your the leader of sorts here right, these people need to be escorted out of here, Newman can't hold that door forever."

The citizens certainly don't seem to respond to Banelin's words, concerns, or palliative nature. Though the perfectly calm half-elf seems to take notice of the heroes at the door, and summons them to him with a wave of his hand.

Re: Tyranny of Dragons: Episode 1: Greenest in Flames
The half elf, having searched the enemies, returned with two scimitars and two daggers, smiling.  She walked upto the one Baelin was talking to and smiled sweetly.

"Hi. Here to save you so how about we just skip the 'oh no, their here to kill us'. We are here to help get you out, and judging by the big guy there, he can't hold those doors forever. So how about you get your two most able bodied people here, give them these..." Handing over the scimitars. "...then we can all leave and not be dead."

As she said this she had a friendly, upbeat tone with a hint of finality.

She looked at the dwarf with a shrug. "Enemies outside....lets move!"

Re: Tyranny of Dragons: Episode 1: Greenest in Flames
The half-elf offers a nod to the stunned young men offered weapons by Lyryian. Just as they were stepping away from her. Almost as on the cue of his nod they step forward and take the weapons.

The half-elf offers a smile, and approaches Banelin. "These people are villagers. I have no idea what you think they can offer, they're mostly terrified. I have faith that Chauntea has sent your party to us. It will not be long before even your friend's addition to our barrier will not be enough. What is your plan?"

His words are interrupted by another loud regimented bang on the barrier, and a slight slide of Newman's dug in feet. Almost imperceptible.

Gorn nods and taps Careena on the shoulder. "Lead them around the west side of the building then over the wall." as he glanced back into the church to see how many there were. "Once over the wall get them into the woods but wait for me. We will take them back the way we came." then looking at Lyryian, "Once I'm over the wall, you follow."

As the villagers were following Careena to the wall, he looked back at Banelin. "May the Gods be with you."

Careena nodded and as the first of the townsfolk started out of the church she lead them towards the wall west of the church. Once at the wall she began helping to get everyone over the wall. "Men, help the women and children, first." as she got the process moving and then went over the wall herself to make sure the group continued towards the woods.

NOTE: The map really doesn't show us what is 15-20 feet from the wall on the outside but I'm going to presume it's forested or at least provides some cover for the people to hide in.

Re: Tyranny of Dragons: Episode 1: Greenest in Flames
The half-elf nods and starts coordinating the escape. With Newman's support, Lyryian's eyes, and Gorn's guidance; the townsfolk are able to escape across the fence long before the roaming patrol makes it around the temple once more.

In addition, the support Newman provided to the barricade allowed for enough time for the party members to follow along. Gathered on the far side of the fence, out of sight and out of mind, the party is able to guide the townsfolk hidden in the temple back to the old tunnel into the keep.

Shortly after the last villager enters the tunnel, Escobert appears. "You lot are doing more than could ever be asked. Please make your way to the town’s mill. If it burns, we’ll lose our stockpile of flour and we won’t be able to grind more for months. I’m trying to assemble enough defenders from here in the keep to defend it through the rest of the night, but that will take time. If you can head there now, you'd do me an even greater service. You’ll need to defend it until our force arrives to take over, but it shouldn’t be more than fifteen minutes behind you."

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
I made the damage rolls, and Newman bought you ten rounds to escape the back of the temple. I did the math, and four rounds was the most it took for anybody to escape the back of the temple. Timing the roaming group right (since they take six minutes to circle the temple and come back to your side) and you need not fight another group! Well done! I'll give you guys a few posts to let your characters catch up to the victory and then I can shuffle you on to the mill!

Hearing Escobert's words, Gorn walked over to him, "What's the fastest way to the Mill?" as he slowly began to check his gear. "I'd like to scout out ahead of the group to make sure we don't run into the group from the church. I'm sure they'll be looking for us."

The half elf brings up the rear of tbe group, a smike on her face at the apparent escape. She looked at Gorn with a wink. "That was fun....what's next?"

As she finished the question, Escobert appears with the next mission. Hands on her knees, she sighs, then stands up and looks at Gorn as he speaks about scouting.

Re: Tyranny of Dragons: Episode 1: Greenest in Flames
Newman tilted his head down to look to the source of the hand that patted his shoulder with a arched eyebrow one might regard as an imitation of a curious expression on his face.  The metal and stone that made it an imitation of armor not all that dissimilar to the armor the dwarf wore.  His facial features shifted to the grin he seemed to display most of the time--when not in a fight.

"It's okay.  No problem."  Newman replied.  Seemingly unsure of what else to say, the wide shoulders just shrugged.  He faced Escobert and then Gorn and Lyryan when they spoke in turn.  "This time we just kill them all, right?"  He queried as he hefted his maul and set himself up ready to march out.

"Depends on the situation, we might kill them all but if an opportunity and plan arises like the one that appeared on the church, their might be less killing and more easier solutions." Banelin says to Newman, then looks toward Escobert,"Anyways, what's the state of the mill currently, is it on fire now or are they about to destroy it with brute force."

Escobert shakes his head, "The best our scouts can tell from the wall of the keep is that they're simply preparing to light it up. We've seen torches and setting kindling up around the walls."

He points in a direction southwest of the keep. "Follow the river that way. Obviously, the mill is on the river, but you may also be able to avoid encounters with other raiders if you stay low and stay near the water."

Nodding at Escobert's words, he turns to the others. "Once we get to the end of the tunnel, Lyryian and I will head along the river towards the mill. Give us about five minutes then follow our trail." Turning towards Escobert, "Do you have anyone that can go along to assist just in case. We have some strength but we could easily be overtaken by numbers."

"I'm thinking if we can draw them away from the mill, we may be able to ambush them and knock down their numbers. It will make it easier to defend the mill while we are waiting for Escobert's folks to arrive." looking back at the others.
