Posting Guidelines

Ideally, I would like to see a 3-4 post per week per person.   Some variation of this level is understood and expected.  I understand there may be life events that could interfere with that—just try and let me know what to expect (ie off for a week due to surgery/recovery, expect little/no internet for a 2 week vacation, whatever—that can be a PM or public OOC as you wish).

For all IC posts, please use 3rd person, preferably past tense (I can work with present).

I do expect more than a one-line response in a given non-combat post.  Such posts, even a simple “yes” answer should be accompanied by a little more—describing stance, expression, emotion, maybe even thought processes—so that there's a fuller picture for everyone to work with.  On the other end of the spectrum, a novella post may lead to skim-reads, so try for a golden mean.  Combat posts can be much more succinct, with just a statement that your character is attacking a particular foe by whichever means, maneuvering for position, or consuming a potion, or whatever; followed by appropriate rolls.

Please note that my settings suppress all colorization, so for character speech, please remember to use quotation marks and other appropriate punctuation.  If you do choose to colorize your speech, please be consistent with that choice and be mindful of sufficient contrast to make your posts legible.  If someone else's color choice is hard to read, please speak up.  Early in my days at RpoL, I was using the dark red theme and another player in a game that I played in used red for his character speech—which meant that he might as well have been posting in invisible ink.

When a dice roll is called for, please put a hard rule after your text and copy/paste the dice roller results.  I would appreciate it if you also included a parenthetical for what your target # is.  For example:

A skill check had been requested:
Today: Rath rolled 9 using 1d20. DEX Check. (14)

Combat
Today: Rath rolled 15 using 1d20. To hit (thac0:20)

You might also write the to hit roll in one of these ways:
Today: Rath rolled 15 using 1d20. To hit (20)
Today: Rath rolled 15 using 1d20. To hit (hits AC5)

For combat rolls, I am requesting that each of you make each of these rolls per combat round:
  • initiative (d10)
  • to hit (d20) - if applicable, for example, not required for certain spells such as magic missile or sleep, etc
  • damage (as appropriate per weapon used)

For spells that do not require a to-hit, please roll the dice for whatever effect is appropriate (the damage on a magic missile or burning hands; the HD affected for sleep, etc.)

At the end of each combat round, I will post a wrap that is what actually happened, sorted through in initiative order (ie, you don't have to wait for your turn in initiative order to post, just post and I'll sort it out here).  Please do not assume success/failure unless you have rolled a natural 20 on your to-hit roll or your to-hit roll would miss even AC 10.

I expect from the players and their characters a certain level of interested involvement. That means not simply reacting to events as they unfold, but actively investigating leads, clues, and hints: your character should be motivated to act, and to act as part of a group.

Unless I tell you otherwise assume you can play with the scenery to help craft the story.  But don’t go nuts making up unverified (by me) facts that have an impact on the plot or story.  You can always ask via private message if you're concerned about whether the particular scenery addition is ok or not.
