And, if my meagre reading Server right, if we get Alster killed the point is moot, no?

Re: OOC Discussions
Alistair's death as a boy would have repercussions for Dragon Age: Origins, primarily through some of the subplots. The main plot revolves around the Warden PC character's efforts to stop the blight, so most of the storyline will remain the same. The nobility would have only Anora left as a choice to rule at the conclusion of the story (even if "the Warden" is a human noble, as she was the consort to the last king and no other members of the bloodline remain).

That said, the boy is important to Arl Eamon, so let's not let it come to that, eh? ;)

I'm giving Loran a chance to respond to Fost's question before moving on.

Re: OOC Discussions
I mean, ideally you have Anora and Alistair on the throne and induct the last hero of Fereldan into the Gray Wardens. That way, you get probably one of the best companions in the game and then you don't have to become Dragon Kibbles at the conclusion. One of the harder outcomes, to be sure, but one that I think is the best of all possible ones.

Re: OOC Discussions
I can't say I've ever been able to reconcile Alistair and Loghain in any of my play throughs. One always dies/get exiled (and I've never hardened Alistair). What's required to get Alistair to go along with it (and could he still take the female noble Warden as a consort if he does)?

My "official" DAO ending is a female Cousland being the princess-consort to Alistair (who has done the Old God Get Down with Morrigan).

Re: OOC Discussions
In order to get Alistair on board with Loghain joining the Wardens, you have to change him. This means hardening his AI, which requires you to take him to see his sister, Goldana. After meeting her, you have to tell him, "Everyone is in this for themselves. The sooner you learn this, the better." Next, when you are in camp, you talk to him about it and you must not say, "I didn't mean it like that." If you fail to do both of these things, Alistair will not accept anything short of Loghain's death.

This is also how you can desecrate the Urn of Sacred Ashes and not have to kill Leliana, or to prevent her from leaving if you do not take her with you. Only, you need to change her to be fine with selfish behavior as well. In her case, I believe the phrase has something to do with "If you like killing, why be ashamed about it." However, since I have never really had the desire to go that route, it's never come up.

I just personally wanted the best possible pair on the throne, and since the Warden really needs to deal with what happens in Amaranthine, I can't ever justify the Warden marrying Alistair. Queen Anora is a great ruler and administrator, King Alistair is a great leader of armies and a symbol people can get behind. Without Anora, the Bannorn would trample all over Alistair's authority or worse, view Eamon as the real power behind the throne. Without Alistair, the Therin line ends, part of the whole reason why Maric was able to rally forces with the River Dales. That, and it turns out Maric was a bit of a badass.

Re: OOC Discussions
I should point out that while they let you make these decisions, they are decidedly not okay with this. If you decide to recruit Loghain, Alistair will not join you to fight the Blight. He makes a big stink about it too. It's like he forgets that the Right of Conscription is a thing. Which would be a fun power move to use against him.

"I want him executed. I'll take the crown to do it!"

"Then I invoke the Right of Conscription! Just like the Wardens have done for blood mages, convicted murderers, assassins, drunkards and everyone else with good skills that the Wardens can use."

Re: OOC Discussions
Hmm.
I wonder if such intense knowledge of the setting, the flow of the grander scheme, the future that lies ahead ... is detrimental or beneficial to the role-play game here?
we may need those arrows later on, so I suggest fire and the poking.

Re: OOC Discussions
I'd say detrimental. Since Alistair is here and we know what happens, it means he has a bit of plot armor which we give him. Prophetic plot armor is still plot armor.

However, we signed up for this. I think the sooner we drop off Alistair, the better for the story.

In that case I guess I can call myself lucky that I know absolutely zilch about the computer game ^^.
However, I find myself intrigued by the wealth of canon.
Not that I ever expect to ever find time again for playing a computer game with that kind of scope :/

Re: OOC Discussions
Let's just say that it would be better if characters from the video games or books never show up in our game, but that such decisions are up to the one directing the story. However, if the characters are mentioned or used sparingly, like Arl Eamon or Alistair right now, it can be fine.

Re: OOC Discussions
I try not to mess with canon characters too much in settings that have them. Alistair will likely be the sole exception of in depth use, since our current date is around the time that the boy traveled to Bournshire.

But, there's always the chance you'll intersect with major players (Arl Eamon, First Enchanter Irving & Wynne at the circle, and other leaders as you travel), but, those interactions will be more like patrons and such, and you won't be called upon to save/fight them.

So, Fost has suggested fire and poking to provoke the spider into showing itself (and hopefully promptly dying). Anyone else have thoughts?

Ignoring it? We just need to leave this place, and we bloodied its nose, so to speak. Now we have bigger numbers and still can prod or kill it. If it decides to strike, it will be when its comfortable.

If we drop the option to use the cave as a base we can leave the spider.
Do we think this will be a brief matter ? I was assuming this task of hunting darkspawn will take a couple of days...

Was the water in the barrel open to the air for a long period of time? I'm having a hard time thinking that sealed barrels could become unsafe to drink considering that was how water was stored for long journeys.
