Story 101.D - Brother Loran's Coda

Brother Loran:
Brother Loran went to the tavern for one watered down wine before leaving the drinkers in the party to it.

He wanted to discuss things with the mother superior. The coin given to him by the Arl and her view of a member of the chantry being given it.

He also wanted to discuss with her Sexta's situation and if there was anything the chantry could do to make her punishment less. And lastly he wanted to see the elf girl and ask her why she did what she did and to take her confession if cherished to give it

So the brother headed to the mother superior's rooms before evening prayer

Mother Hannah smiles sweetly at the novice as he enters her office. "You have the look of someone in need of advice and comfort? What may I do to help you find both?"

Story 101.D - Brother Loran's Coda

Brother Loran bowed and say in the chair opposite with a troubled look and sighed "it is this." He said handing the steel medal over to her " the Arl gifted it to me for my services in the capture of the mages and the elf girl sexta. "

He looked down then up again " I am unsure whether a member of the chantry should accept such a gift for following the teachings of the maker. It feels that it goes against those teachings to accept something in exchange for my services. I took the girl under my wing and have her sanctuary because that is what the maker would have done. I saved her life because no matter what her crime the maker teaches all life precious this to accept this feels wrong but then to refuse it would insult the Arl and that feels wrong to.... "

He sighed deeply still troubled " that is not the only thing on my mind. I feel the elf girl needs a ear to listen to her story, yes she stole from behind these very walls but I don't think she did it freely no matter what some of the others say. When we first enccounted her she had the look of pure gear on his face. Unless she was a master actor I believe it was true fear. "

Looking at the mother superior with true sadness in his eyes " she is a list soul in a cruel world that are against her kind, I believe if nothing else she needs a friend. I no it is not my place to ask but could you petition the Arl to allow me time to visit her in her cell to listen if sandwiches to speak or just sit with her until her trial so she knows she is not alone"

Story 101.D - Brother Loran's Coda

The revered mother listens quietly as the young brother pours out his heart. She nods periodically, acknowledging a point here and there, as he tells of his concerns.

"Your nature matches your vocation, Brother Loran," she begins, leaning in as she begins her counsel. "You always seek to comfort and reconcile the heart with the head. It is an admirable trait, one we all should strive to cultivate, and it does you credit.

"Regarding your reward; just because we take vows to eschew the trappings of power and wealth, it doesn't mean we cannot accept accolades when they come, even formal ones," Mother Hanna continues. "You are not the first, and you will not be the last, of our order to receive such a reward. Of course, this new privilege of yours doesn't absolve you of your vows, either; when you take advantage of it, do not do so for personal gain, but always for the glory of Andraste and the Maker. In that way, you honor both the arl and your Maker."

"Now, the girl. First, you must shed your guilt; in no way was your generosity and genuine care for her well-being responsible for her actions, coerced or not," she adds. "Second, we must trust the arl's judgment in the matters of guilt and punishment; he will hear all counsel before making his decision, and she will not be unfairly punished. He is a just man; I believe he will do right by her and the king's law.

"But, yes, you may go to her; I'm sure she could use a friend at this moment. Be the comforter she needs."

Story 101.D - Brother Loran's Coda

Brother Loran stood, asked if the mother superior required anything before he retired to the prison to visit the girl.

As he left his heart felt slightly lifted. The mother superior always had a way of making him see through the gig of doubt and he loved her dearly for that.

Heading to the cells he approached the guards and requested to visit with the elf girl as her confessor on behalf of the maker and the chantry

Story 101.D - Brother Loran's Coda

There are four cells in the dungeon, and only the two outer cells are occupied by Sexta and Secundus; it makes him wonder where the mages are being held. Is there another part to the dungeon?

Sexta, though, is in the closest cell to the entrance, and Richard finds her sitting against the wall, her head in her knees. Upon his approach, she looks up, her eyes weary.

"Have you come to rebuke me, brother?" she asks. Her voice is tired, but there's a sharpness in the words that is hard to miss. "I'm sorry that I abused your friendship, but I had no choice; he's my master, and I must serve him."

Story 101.D - Brother Loran's Coda

Brother Loran pulled up a stool next to the bars of the cell and sat.

"no I have not come to rebuke you. Far from it I am sure you had your reasons but I am here because despite it all you are alone, in a strange land facing an uncertain future and I thought you might need a friend. I offer my time and my friendship freely in the hope that it will in someway bring you a little comfort. "

Story 101.D - Brother Loran's Coda

She stares at Loran like he just grew wings, her expression one of disbelief.

"You - you are very kind, Brother," Sexta says. Looking around at her surroundings, she muses, "It seems I've traded one form of captivity for another."

Not waiting for a response, the elf scoots herself closer to the bars and faces Loran. "Tell me about you and your people. I've only heard the briefest of stories of Fereldans, mostly about their savagery and barbarian ways."

Story 101.D - Brother Loran's Coda

Brother Loran smiled "I will make a deal with you, I will tell you about my race if I'm turn you tell me about yours and perhaps by the end two races can find a common ground....At least in this little part of the world"

He took a moment to think before starting " I will tell you first about a new born baby left on the steps of a chantry some years ago. He was found by the mother superior the following morning blue from cold and half dead. He was taken in and warmed and fed and kept safe in the light of the maker. "

He looked up at the elf and smiled " the bag free fast and strong the sisters cared for him and taught him thread his letters and study the words of the maker. When the boy was old enough he took his vows and became a priest. He cared for the people around him and hopefully was cared for by them in return"

He fell silent for a moment before giving a sigh " Aston can see I am a simple foundling who grew up knowing no other life than this. I learned the herbs and healing art to care he my village I listen to their worries and try to settle disputes. On cold winter nights I sometimes wonder who my parents were, why they left me, where they might be now. Who I might have been if I'd been loved by them.....Then I think no all things happen for a reason. If I'd not been left here as a child then Mary the blacksmiths wife would have died in child birth last autumn so you see the maker made sure even someone like me had a place in the grand scheme of things"

"Now that you know who I am perhaps you would willingly tell me who Sexta really is" he added with a gentle smile

Story 101.D - Brother Loran's Coda

"The same as I told you before, for the most part," she responds. "Captured young and separated from my father, mother, and siblings. I was a servant in my old master's barracks, as I said.

"The reality is that my master and his family were killed as part of some political plot; they intended to wipe out the entire household, but Master Secundus and his friends were able to escape with me. We traveled overland for some time, the warriors taking caravan jobs here and there throughout the Free Marches, and we eventually ended up in Denerim by way of Ostagar. That's when they met the Orlesians, and the scheme was set."

She paused, then added, "Master Secundus said the plot would only work if I was the thief, under pretense of escape; if I refused, he threatened to kill me and just hire another. Master Guillaume was nicer, and said he 'disapproved' of slavery; he promised to free me and give me an income to 'live in comfort' once he reclaimed his title."

"you and I are not un a like then both orphaned young having to fend for our selves. I admit that my life was not as challenging as yours but we share a loss and a feeling of not belonging."

He was silent for a time "so you wish to know about humans and our societies ask any question you wish and if I can answer it I will if not I will find it and tell you the next time we meet. May I ask do you know your letters if so I will ask the mother superior if I can bring you some books on the subject"

"No, I've never learned to read," she admitted, though she doesn't seem to harbor any shame in that fact. She paused a moment, then asked, "What is it like here, for elves? I saw that they were segregated in Denerim, but that wasn't the case in the villages we passed through to get here. I saw elven farmers working next to human ones, without bad treatment. What have you seen? Is there hope that I can find a life after my release?"
