Story 102. The ArlÂ’s Ward

Even though not being a fighter Brother Loran moved forward so that he would be within running distance of Fost if he needed healing and holding his staff in both hands he started to pray to the maker.

suddenly he felt at piece and a caalm fell over him as if the maker was standing by his side at his hour of need

so suddenly that it surprised him as much as all around a bolt off pure light lanced across the space between himself and the nearest Mabari

Story 102. The ArlÂ’s Ward

OOC: The Backstab Rogue class ability is melee only, which is borne out by the gameplay in all three DA video games. So, no ranged attack may make extra damage in that way.

And, yes, in sequence, the bow has to be drawn (Ready Minor action), the arrow has to be loaded (Minor action reload property performed as a Major action), which could’ve been done on his last turn), aim (Minor action), and then fire (Ranged Attack Major action)

The closest Mabari (Mabari Blue) is about 46 yards away from Richard’s position, so the attack is at Long Range.

Aim grants a +1 attack, and long range imposes a -2 attack, giving Richard a total modifier of +2. The raw roll was 8, resulting in a 10. A miss.

Richard’s shot sails high and appears to catch the boot of one of the fallen Redcliffe guards. The target animal flinches slightly, but their ire is already roused, and the trio of feral animals rush the mounted warrior, growling through gnashing teeth.

OOC: Each of the dogs takes a Move Minor action and a Run Major action.

As the first dog comes within reach, Fost draws out his throwing axe and buries it into the animal’s shoulder with a mighty swing. Meanwhile, he maneuvers his mount to ensure the dogs don’t get a clean attack on him.

OOC: Since Mabari (White) is the first to act, we’ll say that’s the first one in his range. A 15 is a hit, and Feral Mabari (White) takes a total of 15 Health in damage. It’s definitely hurt, but it’s still in fighting shape.

Fost has +2 Defense until the beginning of his next turn.

Leaving his mount behind, Brother Loran moves forward; the Maker’s presence is strong, and energizes the air around him. The energy discharges almost like a lightning bolt, and the surprise makes the young acolyte jump, sending the blast over the beast’s head.

OOC: A 12 is a miss.

Okay, Mikhail is next, followed by Richard at the top of Round 2. Group 0 Map has been updated.

Re: Story 102. The ArlÂ’s Ward

The wounded dog isn’t able to avoid the bolt and takes the full brunt of the arcane energy. It yelps once and collapses in a heap where it stood.

OOC: Evil GM, for the NPC Mabari (White), rolled 13 using 3d6+3 with the AGE System with rolls of {5}, 2, 3.  Dexterity (Acrobatics).

Evil GM, on behalf of Mikhail Loren, rolled 14 using 2d6+6 with rolls of 6,2.  Arcane Bolt Damage.

Round 2

His initial target down, Richard adjusts his aim to the dog in front of the Fost’s mount; however, the additional range and combat conditions forces him to shoot too fine, and the arrow strikes the ground to the left of the animal.

The dog on Fost’s right breaks and runs at the thunderous blast of arcane energy; however, the other stands fast and nips at the mount.

OOC: Mabari Red has moved 3 yards beyond the right edge of the map.

Evil GM, for the NPC Mabari Blue, rolled 11 using 3d6+5 with the AGE System.  Dexterity (Bite).

Evil GM, for the NPC Mabari Blue, rolled 7 using 1d6+4.  Damage Bite 1d6+4.

I stopped here, because Fost needs to make a TN11 Dexterity (Riding) to keep control of the horse.

[Round 02]

One hound attacked his horse, but Fost nimbly steered his horse with a pressure of his strong legs to keep in the saddle.

Beset by several huge hounds Foat considered retreat but feared for his friends. So he threw his axe with force at one of the mabari and then drew his large blade to continue the fight.

Re: Story 102. The ArlÂ’s Ward

The horse simply doesn't appreciate being put in this situation and protests with a whinny as the warrior expertly maneuvers it with his knees.

He slams the axehead into the dog's flank before it bounces off ribs and tumbles to the ground. The animal yelps and hops back as Fost pulls his heavy blade.

OOC: Okay, we have Loran and Mikhail to finish the round, and Richard at the top of Round 3, should the beast last that long. Note that neither Richard nor Loran have a good shooting line at Mabari (Blue) from where they stand, as Fost & his mount obscure most of the hound.

This time instead of a pure bolt of light a shimmering wave of eldritch energy appeared next to the hound attacking Fost and started to envelop it.

Re: Story 102. The ArlÂ’s Ward

The wave of energy surrounds the animal, and it seems to sag under the weight of its own body.

OOC: Failed save. Mabari (Blue) suffers -1 Strength, -1 Dexterity, and -5 Speed for 2 rounds (the Dragon Die of the casting roll).

The spell also generated 2 Stunt Points. You can spend those to reduce the mana cost to 2 (from 3).

The circle mage’s followup bolt slams into the impaired dog; it’s legs wobble, but the Mabari remains standing.

OOC: Failed save.

Damage: Evil GM, on behalf of Mikhail Loren, rolled 8 using 2d6+6 with rolls of 1,1.  Arcane Bolt Damage.

Round 3

OOC: A character only receives a Minor and a Major action on their turn. A Move is a Minor Action (and a Run is a Major Action), and a Minor Action can be performed in place of a Major Action.

So, Richard would be able to move and load this round, or load and shoot. Since the intent was to get a better angle, I’m going to say he moves and loads this round.

Richard hops down off the cart and moves obliquely to get a better angle on his next shot as he loads his bow.

OOC: Mounting/dismounting costs half your move distance. Next round, if you use your Minor action to move before you fire, you’ll likely have cleared its cover.

The dog is either too brave or thick headed to flee, and continues to attack Fost’s mount.

OOC: Attack Fost’s mount with Bite.
Evil GM, for the NPC Mabari Blue, rolled 11 using 3d6+4 (2 stunt points) with the AGE System.  Dexterity (Bite); -1 Dex pen accounted for.

Evil GM, for the NPC Mabari Blue, rolled 9 using 1d6+3.  Damage Bite 1d6+3.

Stunt: Knock Prone!

The horse panics at the dog’s repeated attack, and it rears and attempts to skip away at the same time, losing its balance and tumbling to the ground, unceremoniously dumping its rider.

OOC: Fost needs to make a Dexterity (Riding) check vs. TN15 to avoid being knocked prone!

The warrior is able to slide off the back of his mount as it rears, and avoids getting tangled up in its fall. With practiced strength and precision, he brings his blade down on the Mabari and downs it with the powerful stroke.

Both bite wounds are significant, but they also appear to have just gotten flesh; even with his limited knowledge of the care of horses, Fost believes mount should recover (barring the wound festering). The animal is still agitated, though, and may take some calming down before it's ready to allow a rider again.

Brother Loran felt physically drained from what had just happened but there was concern in his eyes when he watched Fost hurry to his horse to check the wounds.

The brother moved towards his friend and his mount laying a gentle hand on the horses neck he said a simple prayer asking for the maker to calm the animal so he could tend the injuries.

As he spoke the words he felt a warmth in his palm that spread from him to the animal and he smiled to himself as the maker answered this one last prayer.

No poultice. No healing herbs. Just the warmth of his touch transferred the healing energy to the animal, who visibly relaxed as the wounds knitted themselves together.

To the others, this display of power at the young brother's hands is unexpected, to say the least. To Mikhail, while the invocations are prayers, the effects are clearly familiar.

Re: Story 102. The ArlÂ’s Ward

Oblivious to the discussion on magic and circles and renegade magic-users Fost was just glad that the horse's wounds had closed.
He was not yet attached to the horse, had not even registered its name, but he would loathe a dead horse to explain to the Arl.
"Thank you."

Then he did register the discusssion after all and frowned.
"When we return we must inform the Templars. There's no way around it. I have no idea what the discussion is truly about, but clearly we must prevent you being hunted down, friend Loran, due to some misunderstanding."

"Right, let's bury the dead soldiers and see if we can find any further clues."

Clearly the whole matter was way over his head and right now he prefered to close his eyes against the implications.
Instead he indicated for Richard to drive the wagon to the ambush site.
