Wait, are we in actual combat now?

01:30, Today: Erin rolled 11 using 3d6+2 with the AGE System with rolls of {1}, 2, 6.  Initiative.

Posting it ehre becasue my internet is being super weird, and don't want to risk editing the IC post myself.

Better roll than wait? Our Storyteller is busy right now and we don't want them to have to ask for any roll that could be easily made.

I still don't think I made the right choice...

@Fost: Appreciate it, I might have doomed us all or only Tyrus but I feel like that's something Tyrus would have done. He'd probably have blasted that mage some time ago tbh.

Life happens, with pbp games its important to post something occasionally or else people are likely to forget about it.

Question: How does everyone feel about puzzles/riddles in TRPGs?
Personally I love a good puzzle as long as its not required to finish the quest.

First, got the post out. Sorry that took so long. (New maps are up for 0 & 1.)

Second, puzzles and riddles? I enjoy them in general (I loved doing the logic puzzles from the old crossword magazines and I do a couple daily crosswords online these days, plus Sudoku is fun), but I'm always a little wary of them in an RPG setting. If you make it too obvious, there's no drama; if you make it too obscure, there's no chance of success and the players get frustrated (that's one of the reasons I stopped playing the Kingmaker online game for Pathfinder, got tired of the tedious obscure puzzles). It's hard to find that sweet spot in the middle.

What I like to do is to sometimes show the framework of the puzzle, and allow the players to have their PCs figure it out by making the appropriate skill or intellect rolls. That way, there's still some chance of failure without having to dial in the difficulty to the players' real world knowledge.

I'm running a murder mystery in my online Star Trek campaign, and I'm having to do this same kind of balancing act. Can't make the clues too easy, but can't make them too obscure, either, since, you know, the players themselves aren't necessarily investigators (or mystery writers). I try to have them let the characters do the heavy lifting.

Oh, murder mysteries are fun but my players tend to have troubles to come up with more obvious questions and actions.

In my own game I include puzzles only in big/important dungeons and even then they only protect extra loot. Also, there are always stories/tales that the party can use to solve the puzzles but they have to do their research before they go to the dungeon. I feel it helps to give players who choose "less useful skills" a chance to shine and help the party.

And honestly, some of the funniest moments happen thanks to puzzles.
I send my party into a tomb, the one buried there was a very smart cookie and included a couple of riddles/puzzles. One of them they thought the answer was "milk" and the party druid had the idea to turn herself into a cow to get milked...

(the answer was wrong but I gave them inspiration for trying so hard)

In reply to Erin (msg # 11):

On your turn, you can take the Heal Action, even if he's at 0 Health. Cunning (Healing) vs. TN11. Success means he gets Health back equal to Erin's Cunning  + the result of the Dragon Die. (She has an even chance of succeeding.)

A character at 0 Health requires healing within 2 + their Constitution rounds or they will die.

Just as a note, Fost's Round 1 attack will not take him to 0 Health. Nolan will still be able to defend himself this round. I'm waffling a bit on whether Wendoll considers Nolan "handled" by Fost and Erin there, or if he's going to follow through and just shoot the poor bastard before moving on. (I may roll on it.)

Of course, Erin could forcefully interject herself between the two men, if she wishes. :)

After that first attack, considering eh was heavily wounded and prone, I had a mind of basically removing him from both harm and combat this round. So super wounded almost dead after this new round's attack and starting on his butt, what do we understand by "defending himself"? Because what Erin may or may not do varies wildly by the happenings before is her time to go to be hoenst.

I mean that he is above 0 Health and can take his normal turn (if he survives long enough to get to it). However, with Arnie acting before him (and the dog will growl and be generally menacing, with a prepared attack if he tries to move), I'm going to have him try to surrender to the group. (Honestly, when I called for Round 1 actions, I didn't expect him to survive the second attack.)

Ok, help me to understand why you consider Nolan 'poor' and worth to save.
I really don't understand what makes him, unlike the clearly enchanted non-combattant folk, an 'innocent' person.
Mind, in the heat of battle I cannot really see anybody reacting accordingly (unlike all those US movies/series glorifying eg Navy Seals/Specials Operations), except that Fost then must believe that Erin has been enchanted, too.
Which will in turn, of course, change the whole flow of the confrontation.

Please do note that I am not trying to convince you otherwise, let alone 'command' how you should act. I really want to understand ooc... I will probably still ic 'what are you doing?!?", lol

Erin knows not a thing about demons and magic, people here were behaving strangely alright, but that's about it. She managed to talk some sense in the couple and Nolan while intimidating had yet to really do anything. Moreover, his tone and demeanor had just begun to change too before he got jumped. That's on the facts on the ground as Erin experienced them.

Now adding Erin on top, she is part of the local militia, her job is to keep the peace and see for the wellbeing of the people of the region. Carving up someone just because they are kind of rude is definitely out of the question, she will definitely take a chance if she isn't absolutely convinced that she HAS to cut people up, that applies fifty-fold to people she considers locals. Moreover, she is a happy-go-lucky cheerful idiot with a simpleminded approach to life.

The way things are through Erin's eyes, assaulting Nolan was more or less unnecessary, striking him once he was on the ground, absolutely reprehensible behavior. *nod nods*

Anyway, now that I am awake with breakfast rather than falling asleep on the keyboard I will post (on the assumption Nolan is not super dying yet but that he is more or less giving up).

Just to make sure, Fost is going to keep the building between him and Fenny/Fancy? Or is he running along the front side (top in view) of that house?

Also, for everyone, as a general rule, if you don't give me a specific distance (or destination), I assume that you're using your full movement. (And, in case I didn't mention it, the squares in the upper section of the map are 2 yards each.)

I've never had the pleasure of travelling west of the U.S. Left Coast (tm), and the closest my dad got to Viet Nam was a landing strip in Laos, I think, when his plane had to refuel on the way to his carrier (USS Constellation); they were allowed off the aircraft, but were restricted to a 50-foot perimeter around it. Needless to say, he never got a chance to take in the sights. ;)

He meant to say "Erinn" (two n's). That is the she-elf's true name. Fantasy is the desire demon's name; Fancy is the name the demon-dominated personality used.

(Erinn was the name I picked for her in the episode 102 storyline, before Erin joined us - yes, the apostate, the archer, and the she-elf are the same characters, retooled slightly for the new story.)

On an administrative note, if you are above 0 Health after an encounter, you're able to "take a breather," which is a 5-minute rest that allows you to regain 5 + Constitution + Level Health.

Also, Tyrus will regain 1d6 + Magic in Mana Points for each hour of rest.

Since the apostate woke up in only about 5 minutes, you folks haven't had a time to rest yourselves, so we'll handle that after the conversation.

Edit: It just occurred to me that I may not have given out any experience since the restart of the campaign. You should've received 400 for the demon fight, a bonus of 100 for rescuing Ser Andra (and keeping her alive), 100 for the fade-touched nug fight, and 250 for this most-recent fight. I'll even throw in an extra 100 for keeping both primary antagonists alive.

So, each character should be at 6,950 experience.

Templars are enforcers and protectors. They guard the individual circles, but also hunt down apostates of all kinds. Sometimes they're required to kill them, but they usually try to capture them and bring them to a circle.

The circle attempts to rehabilitate apostates and bring them into the fold, but, sometimes, they must instead be stripped of their connection to the Fade through the Rite of Tranquility, which also strips of their ability to dream. These "Tranquil" end up in a sort of semi-conscious state, devoid of emotions. Tranquil end up performing administrative, logistic, and service roles within circles, and also create potions and runes.

Based on Fost's understanding of things, the Templars would either hold him until their contemporaries from Kinloch Hold (the Ferelden Circle) can come retrieve him, or take him there themselves.

Now, there are generally two types of apostates. Some have never had any formal training, and may not even be aware of their nature (kind of like Brother Loran in the previous incarnation of this campaign). Others have escaped or rebelled against a circle.

Tyrus is going to suggest to bring the apostate to Ferelden's beloved Templars as soon as possible. He doesn't really care about the others and sees little to no use in trying to get the farmhands and the others arrested. We might also want to visit the farm we just came from, after all we brought their brother back.
He'll happily take any coin given and spend a little in the local watering hole. After the experience in the farmer's house he wants some good wine.

Story 201, Msg 264:
"No. I don't know exactly what went on that night just north of Lothering, but it was at his insistence; it was his doing," Nolan countered, his head hung low.

You all would recognize this reference to the grove north of Lothering. Fenwithe similarly invoked the grove area when he mentioned a "night at the crossroads."

Story 201, Msg 271:
"The night at the crossroads was just the preparation. Needed a bit of the host's blood to give Fantasy an in. Tonight was when we were going to fully merge body and spirit."

Verifying the scrap as belonging to a dress of Erinn's should be easy enough. At least one of the women of the homestead should know where Fancy's belongings were kept. (The shift she was wearing today was light, but colored.)

Okay, don't post in the thread just yet.

First thing I need to know is: Does anyone intend to stop Nolan?

Please answer yes or no, and, if yes, whether the attempt is verbal or physical.

Wendoll won't do anything on his own, but will help physically restrain Nolan if someone else is attempting to do that.

Yes, I do, physically.

Why? Because one year back it was my understanding that Fancy only appeared in Fenwithe's dreams... not physically, not posessing Erinn.
Hence I sniff a ruse of Nolan and want that point cleared with Fenwithe.
I do suspect Nolan to be in this after all... not innocent

Just a little clarification on that point, since I know you're new to the Dragon Age milieu.

When mortals dream*, they are connected to the Fade, where spirits reside. For most folk, this is a fleeting connection that usually results in impressions being left in the Fade, and also in their own memories. For mages, however, because they have a stronger connection to the Fade through their manipulation of arcane energy, this is a deeper interaction that can lead to getting lost in the Fade (and never waking up in the real world) or being possessed by a demon (being turned into an abomination).

These, of course, may not be things Fost understands. What he does understand is that demons do cross over from the Fade (and cause all sorts of havoc) and they can possess mortals.

* Dwarves don't dream, and can't make a connection to the Fade. (As such, they can't be mages.)

I'll call out and try to stop Nolan using my voice.

Tyrus Morven rolled 13 using 3d6+2 with the AGE System with rolls of {6}, 1, 4.  communication.

I figured it was part the demon's desire to want to be in the visage of a beautiful mortal, and part of Fenwithe's desire to have his beloved Fantasy in unspoiled physical form. Had the ritual that night been completed, Bad ThingsTM would've happened. (For one, she was going to have her coven possess all of the women of the farmstead, except for Ginny, who went mad rejecting her original overtures. They were going to keep her around for their own sadistic amusement. With the men enthralled, they would've started enthralling anyone who passed by.)

Yup! The four-room house, purchase, is exactly that. 50gp (i.e., 5,000sp) will get you your own townhome or cottage in or around the village. Or, you could instead rent it for 500sp/month. Alternately, you can rent an apartment (in a building owned by someone else) for 75sp/month.

Re: OOC Discussion II

The book is very vague about it, so I had to do some back of the envelope calculations on it. The idea is that each room in a rented place costs a little more than half the value of a nightly room at the inn (i.e., 1.25sp per room), since you're fully responsible for your own upkeep. So, 2 rooms is 2sp/night, or 75sp/month. For the four-room house, I increased the price a bit more, since that's a stand alone building or a townhouse, which will have space for work.

And, for Lothering, I probably should lower the prices a bit. Those were meant to be generic-ish.

So, let's go with 60sp per month (15sp per week) for a two-room apartment, and 200sp per month (50sp per week) for a four-room townhouse or cottage in Lothering.

Seeing reluctance among the others, Ser Ragnall will drive the cart. His prisoner, his responsibility and all. (He's like Fost - he much prefers the saddle.) He'll gladly take occasional relief, though, even to just stretch his legs in transit.

So, it looks like we have Wendoll & Arnie scouting head, Fost on horseback just ahead of the tumbrel, Ser Ragnall driving, Tyrus alternately riding passenger or walking alongside, and Erin walking alongside (and, to Ser Ragnall's hope, occasionally spelling him as driver).

On a side note, you would all know that the Old Imperial Highway isn't fully intact (and some of you would know it wasn't fully completed by the Tevinter Empire; some sections were completed later). There are sections that have fallen beyond modern capabilities to shore up or repair, requiring travelers to go to ground from time-to-time. A number of stretches on the west bank of Lake Calenhad and some sections traversing the Frostbacks are in disrepair, but there is at least one section on the east bank of Calenhad (your route) that requires bypassing; it's supposed to be marked.

That ramp does not appear to be going more or less straight but 'within a box'. It switches back on  itself, i.e. like a staircase inside a building.
Given the height of the road I presume that there are further ramp sections that are beneath earlier ones. So essentially it has a 'roof' of the earlier section that blocks sight.
That's what I meant ;)

So, I just want to make sure y'all are still interested continuing despite these intermittent delays. I've been enjoying running the game for you, but I understand if you would prefer to spend your time elsewhere (or in a game with more pace).

In reply to Evil GM (msg # 134):

I'm still fine with continueing.
Yes, it's not a fast game, and yes, it's not even a regularly paced game.
I still enjoy it anyway :).

I am not in any regularly paced game nor in any fast paced game.
Heck, the game that interests me most from a system perspective is also at max 1-2 GM posts per week, if that. The ooc:ic ratio is something like 5:1 and it's kind of waiting on GM decisions seemingly all the time.
I completely missed out on an Expanse, a MERP, a SpaceMaster and a Traveller game. A week inactivity became a couple if weeks, became months and I did it even find the time to inform, an utter shame and something I have taken pains never to do since 2010 (since joining RPoL). So I can sympathize with RL taking punches at oneself.
I urgently need to find a new job, too, and have not really found the strength and concentration.
So, well, really...

I'm good, sure I'd like to post a little more often than 1-2 a month but honestly, I also don't have as much time as I used to and it fits me rather well.

You wrote the thugs wear leather, no? Damage roll of Wendoll was 13 but you noted inflicted also 13?
I am happy if they do not wear armor:D

That was a mistake. Forgot to apply the armor. Somehow slipped back into D&D mindset between applying damage to Fost and the Thug. Fixed.

I have the next post mostly finished, but I had to step away from it for a while. I'll get it finished tonight or tomorrow.

Oups, you did warn that the horse would become a problem but I had not realized the extent, i.e. that our foes would actually spend their actions to calm or intimidate it.

Cannot remember: is the horse war-trained? Would it rather spook and flee or lash out at everyone around it? Does Fost even know? Or would it take a roll? Cunning maybe?

You've spent enough time on the horse to know without a roll.

The horse appears to have some war training, but it's more of a rouncey than a charger, that is, it's more of a ride to the fight than fight on it. As such, it felt like Fost feels it would be a bit more skittish in a fight than steady.

And the bandits trying to move the horse probably has to do with getting more bodies on the line against y'all.

Question just so I don't mess up, I don't find anything against it but want to be certain. Can I do several different combat stunts in one round? I got 6 SP And I could mirror Fost's dual strike for 4 points, but was wondering if I could pair that with mighty blow for another 2 points for a total of 6. I also understand that this extra damage would only apply to the first target (if doable at all).

Sure you can combine SP expenditure.

Do note that Dual Strike for Warriors of our level only costs 3 SP!

Bother I just read that Skirmish only allow for own movement or target of the attack.
So no moving of the horse.

I'll edit asap

We really are in sync this fight, for the better. Felt it would be tougher, but those good rolls are tilting things in our favor rather fast. :D

Tyrus, you can use Spell Stunts (p.106). For 2SP, you reduce the Mana Cost of the spell by 1. I think that's the only one that applies.

I know it's a short post, but I'm recovering from a wee bout over the weekend. Not a lot of energy...I'll get out something more comprehensive in the next couple of days.
