This Thread is to post whatever you want, … With a few guidelines

 1. Keep it clean, no vulgar posting and follow all the Rules for this site.

 2. This is NOT the thread to post if you plan to be away for a longer period than 24hrs; post a time frame for us to expect you back. see link to a message in another game

 3. It’s O.K. to ask questions or make comments about other games, but not on an active game presently being played on this site.

 4. Don't post rolls, or questions related to the current adventure that should be posted in OOC or IC threads.

Welcome !

I have not officially started the game but thought maybe for those motivated enough to contact me I should get some chat going.

I’m going to look for about 5 players, and see how it goes.

Hi fellas :)

I'm happy to be starting at the 1st ever module. Sounds a great place to start!

I'm curious, I do have the red books, but the classes only go to level 3. Does that mean that this campaign is itself capped at level 3, or would it progress to other books for levels 4+?

So I've ended up with:

13,12,8,14,9,18

I can go almost anything with those stats except a cleric. Might wait and see what everyone else is taking before landing on something I guess.

Is CHA:18 actually useful? Or is it only really useful to lower to 10 to give me 4pts somewhere else? Morale adjustment doesn't sound all that sexy?

So I'm just looking at these rules and as far as I can tell, a cleric having WIS:10 is no different to a cleric having WIS:18, at least with respect to his spellcasting. Have I got that right?

If so, then I think I'm able to take any class with my stats, so I might wait and see what Winter wants to take, then try and fill a hole with my character choice :)

Hey rethink your stats. There is small gains on such a high wis.  In basic 14 is pretty good, might think about str. or dex. for fighting. Or even con. For more hit points.

Here is what the book says about adjusting stats.

Basic Rulebook, pg. 22:
-Strength may be lowered by magic-users in order to raise Intelligence, and by clerics in order to raise Wisdom.
-Intelligence may be lowered by fighters, dwarves, halflings, thieves, and clerics in order to raise a prime requisite of their class.
-Wisdom may be lowered by magic-users, fighters, dwarves, elves, halflings, and thieves in order to raise a prime requisite for their class.
-Dexterity may not be lowered, though it can be raised if it is a prime requisite.
-Constitution and Charisma may not be raised or lowered.

Ok, cool.

Personally, I don't think there is much to worry about. The only people who have been at risk so far are those who are already ill or weakened. That's mostly elderly or sick people.

The mortality rate is about 2% (and that's with ill old and sick). Which means if you do get infected, you have a 98% chance to make it. That's a good save! =)

Heck, most people only have very minor symptoms and they don't even feel it.

And the media is just crazy, but they sell more papers when people are scared.

Stay clean! It's all going to be fine in a few weeks time. =)

Assuming a policy-lite approach, 80% of the population gets it and that's still about 6 million dead in the US alone. Not to mention that the mortality rate is assuming due care, but with only 900,000 beds a bump in the curve will put millions of very ill people back into their homes to try and tough it out.

I hope you're right, and it is possible that it wont be all that bad, but the downside is much worse than you think.

This may sound silly, but the body's immune response is lowered under fear, sadness, and stress (anger + fear).

So, if you want to increase your chances to stay well, keep a positive mindset and laugh a lot.

It will help a ton! =)

Yes! Exactly! The media is crazy. Do not listen to the fear mongering and apocalyptic interpretations. Stay upbeat and listen to good music. While you may not be able to do much about how others manage themselves, you certainly have power over how you manage your own mental and emotional space.

Be a beacon of light in fearful times! =)

Re: Open Chat

We, I have a very large spirit collect (ie. Wines and liqueur)
So I have been self medicating daily. lol

Monday was Miller Lite
Tuesday was a single shoot of GOT single malt
Wednesday a lot more GOT scotch
Thursday finished the GOT and move to some MACALLAN, Good stuff!, ...
- That was already on its last two glasses
Move to some tequila, some high end stuff, good enough to drink straight up and on the rocks.
Yesterday I did some Chives Regal - been some time since I drank this one, almost forgot what it tasted like.

SO whats for today ?? not sure but if I am going too, may give it a rest, .....

So I have always used stats as the base for all skills. Maybe I was ahead of the curve when I was in 7th grade.

So there is no Spot Check, but Wisdom: The word "Wisdom" refers to inspiration, intuition, common sense, and shrewdness.

And so intuition can be a form of spot check, as you will see when I get everyone post and I reply.

Re: Open Chat

ok now with the surprise round posted player my posted freely and incroperate the surpirse attacking their post

example

As the goblins jump out and attack, arrows go flying and one strikes Borohorn in the leg. The wound is deep (4hp damage) but Borohorn press on with his attack and strike down one of the goblin with a devastating blow of his axe (6hp damage).

can be as long as you like have fun with it, just realize if he did 1 point of damage it would of been a different IC Or if he rolled bad then a miss and maybe any movement, etc etc

As long as the posts sticks to the facts you can write anything, as long as you don't RP the monsters in a way that have a game effect.

Re: Open Chat

So Bob, your A/C is 3 and they need a 16 or better which they make it at a roll of 16, and the hit does 4 hp damage.

FYI, how I normal play by post if you can describe their hit with fairness and then counter with your roll.

example

The goblin charges with its spear and slashes Bobs left leg, As Bob does his best to forget the pain and focus on his attack, the bite of the wound cause enough pain for Bob's strike to miss.

When I attack with the goblins it will be something like this.

Bobs attack allows for the goblin to reposition himself and change to Bobs flank and with another blow. This time the sneaky goblin drives his spear into the other leg and Bob now needs to worry as with both wounds he's now in serious trouble. Perhaps he will not be able to handle another attack like the last one.

we roll init.

hope this help everyone on posting in combat :)

take a look at or game map and look under group 1

Re: Open Chat

Hi everyone, now that we are in our first combat we can weed through some rules and figure out some things.

So the different versions of D&D have many ways to handle movement, since I am not a map person for combat I like to keep things simple.

I never saw combat as standing on a 5ft square and going at it. If your thinking 3.5 D&D with 5ft shifts that's out in this game.

This doesn't mean you can just Move about and do what every you like, but if you want to tumble and leap or jump in your description that's fine as long as you understand it has no game mechanic effects.

For example the Salochin moved 20 ft and attacked, this is ok.
One goblin moved and change his target from Darimillian to Feanor who was within 20 ft and attacked, this is also ok.
Darimillian withdrawal and added 10 ft so if any goblin next round would want to attack him in melee they would have to move only and next round attack.
Since Darimillian is no longer threaten he can hide or seek cover.
Vatinius is also not in melee so he can hide and also seek cover.
Both Vatinius & Salochin still have one more round before they can attack the Goblins with the shortbows, that means in round 3 they can move the last 10ft and attack in melee at any point they can attack with missile and keep closing the gap. Keep in mind so can the goblins.

I guess the best way to say this is, you can move up to your movement once, at almost any point during a fight if the area allows it.

If we win, we go, in whatever order the players happen to post. Then you do. Repeat.

If you win, you go. Then the players go, in whatever order we happen to post. Repeat.

It would cut down on waiting for us to throw a d6 just to see if you can have the NPCs go or not.  And when we all post, but lost init, and you post the NPCs actions after ... now the posts are out of order and some handwavium needs to be applied to actions that got posted out of order.

GM will rolls group initi to help speed up posting time since there is a delay as we wait to see who goes first each round. This should reduce that wait.

If group win, players post, actions happen in order of posts. Then GM posts.

Re: Open Chat

Hello Everyone

I hope you had a great Memorial Weekend, I an on vacation until Sunday night I am posting and logging in when I have some free time. Please check the thread on GENERAL RULES, I added a post on Ability Checks. With Classic D&D there are gaps and one is how to determine some things like a spot check or search, etc, etc.

Its been years but I remember using abilities for many of these rolls and I plan to do the same here. Let me know what you think about this? I also plan to add some Racial abilities, that are given based on your play in IC (still working on this idea).

If any of you have any questions or don't like any of the house rules that may come up as we play please let me know. I do want this to be as enjoyable as possible for all.

Re: Open Chat

Hi

I have been thinking I would like to make clear how abilities will be used in the form of untrained skills. I will be using the 5th ed. concept. I think it would nice when player takes actions they understand what may need to be rolled before.

An example in the Valley of Rocks if a PC wanted to climb the steepest area what would be roll? And that would be strength with a DC I would assign and it would range from very easy (DC 0) to Nearly impossible (DC 40)

I will also post a chart with the DC rating so its fair for everyone and they can know in advance what may come form their actions.

let me know if you have any questions?
I will continue to add this information unless we like something else in its place.

I would agree with Feanor. I'd like to stick to the original (lack of) skills, or the optional skills of the basic edition.

On that note, you have included two encumbrance and movement systems: the original coin based system, and 5th edition STR multiplier system. I think you might have to settle on one of them.

ok,
but in basic I reminder using abilities much like 3.5 skills ?
So like if a character wanted to track a creature it would be a Wisdom (Survival) check.

just saying it not a skill per say, its a wisdom check, ....

With encumbrance there is weight and the the effects speed/movement
I working on that and I differently what to keep the basic rules in play.
If they contradict each other I can easily remove the one under strength.

I'm actually looking to keep it pour as well, so no not interest in actual skills and assigning point, it more like automatic as part if the abilities, just to give the abilities more depth for players and game use.

I kind of am already using it this way its just not clearly in writing within the basic rules.

Re: Open Chat

Hmmm... about those DC rules.

Basic D&D does not have skill points. At best, it uses the stats to represent innate skills.

This means that no character will ever get a +4 or higher to their roll.

It is then not quite possible to hit a 24 in this system, because the most you could roll is a 20, and highest bonus you could get is a +3 with an 18 stat.

The idea of a DC 25 does not seem likely to ever hit with common stats, much less 30 or 40.

Please correct me if I misunderstanding this.

You are correct, and have some very good points on DC.
What if these bonuses were stack-able. Magic items, and not sure maybe other stuff ??

also we can change up the DCs.

And lastly we can add 1 also misses
and 20 always hits

And remember everyone this is a discussion and not officially part of the rules, as we continue to push forward

Re: Open Chat

I have established a different system in the Basic D&D game I am running. It goes like this:

Premise:
The average stat is 11, numerically speaking, although from a human perspective it probably goes from 9 - 11. Hence, for our purposes, 11 is the middle point for this operation.

System:
Now, with this 11 in mind, we establish difficulties. To succeed you have to roll equal to, or below, your stat number. A 1 always succeeds.

- Easy/Routine: no roll necessary, you can do it or know the information
- Slightly Difficult: -2 to the roll
- Difficult: -4 to the roll
- Very Difficult: -6 to the roll
- Challenging: -8 to the roll
- Heroic: - 10 to the roll

So, from the perspective of an average 11, Heroic difficulty would place the success roll on a 1 out of 20. Which is still possible for your average individual, but very hard.

PCs, of course, will have higher stats, and hence will have better chances to succeed on their skill attempts than others.

Note that the stat bonuses are not actually included for these rolls. If the stat earns a bonus, it is already higher than 11, hence it will already have that "bonus" in it. Lower stats and penalties work the same way: a lower stat means that you can't do things that are more difficult because your base chance is already below 11.

What do you think?

Re: Open Chat

Ok... examples are easy.

Let's say you have a mage with a 17 INT and a 9 DEX. And you also have a rogue with a 17 DEX and a 9 INT.

A knowledge skill roll for the mage would be based on INT. He would only need a 17 or less to make that roll and succeed. For more difficult or obscure knowledge, he would take a penalty, say -8 to his roll because the knowledge is very obscure. With that 17 INT he would have:

17 - 8 = 9 or less to make the roll.

The rogue with an INT of 9 would only have 9 - 8 = 1 or less to make the roll. Very hard to do so, but still a 5% chance.

For a physical test, let's say there is a tightrope spanned between rooftops. The rogue would use a DEX based skill (acrobatics) with a -6 for difficulty because it is at night and the rope is very narrow. He would would need:

17 - 6 = 11 or less to make that crossing.

The mage, with a DEX of 9, would need 9 - 3 = 3 or less to make it. Not impossible, but pretty hard for a mage trying this out.

Now, some things would naturally be not allowed. For example, an old man with a STR of 5 would not be able to move a very heavy boulder. Not even with a natural roll of 1. Likewise, attempting to translate or understand a language never seen before cannot be done, even with an INT roll of a 1, unless you are using magic or something.

Makes sense? Of course, this is all only a suggestion. =)

I like it, and that was my first idea but I couldn't see the pattern. Your example does that.
And what about the bonus for the 17 which in +2 for INT. Does that take any  effect? As i was think to add that to the DC.

So in your example it would start at 19, and get adjusted from there based on the difficultly.

Re: Open Chat

In this system, there is no Difficulty Class. You either make the roll or you don't.

Characters with high stats will have an easier time. Characters with low stats are just not as skilled.

If a roll is meant to be more difficult than normal, you add the penalties to compensate. If it is meant to be easier, you can add bonuses. But overall, there is no DC to reach. Just the roll equal or lower than the adjusted stat. The bonuses don't play into it.

In order to have a bonus of +3, the stat would already be at 18, which is an 18 or less roll, which is far better than, say, a 12 or less roll, a stat where no bonuses are present. You can effectively ignore the bonuses because the stats are already very high, making the base roll much easier anyway.
