Re: Round the Campfire (OOC)

And we are begun.

We can keep tinkering with character generation as we play this first scene, which shouldn't require much in the way of dice rolling.

I'm assuming Christine would have arrived with James. Just hasn't said anything yet.

Alternative interpretation: Christine is an expert in camouflage, and has been standing very, very still whilst wearing a sweater the exact colour and pattern as the wallpaper.

Re: Round the Campfire (OOC)

I have found that having chosen Peter Lorre for my portrait, I can't help but use his speech patterns and syntax in my 'speech'. Is anyone else hearing that as well? Do you feel the same impulse with your character?

Re: Round the Campfire (OOC)

I'm equally terrible at recognising actors and writing speech rhythms that sound the way I "hear" them, so I'm just trying to keep from making George sound like every rural New England ex-mariner ever...

In reply to Jason Lee Bliant, M.D. (msg # 29):

It's one reason I try to avoid too-recognizable actors when selecting character portrait. I once used Sam Elliot's face for my character. Fortunately, his screen persona was admirably suited to the character.

Re: Round the Campfire (OOC)

The moment I realized that we have two 'James' in the group, I was afraid this would happen. I can't tell which James is suppose to know Gerwig. I fear this may become more of an issue later.

GM: May I have your permission to alter my name to the more archaic "Eames Lee Bliant" in order to avoid further confusion?

Who knows Who

Professor Theaker knows all of the students, has taught each in more than one class. He's had Gerwig marked down as the best of the lot.
Christine knows the students casually from evenings when she entertains James's students and from departmental social gatherings.

Daniels knows all three as classmates, though he is a bit ahead of them, as he has already written his thesis.
Dr. Bliant doesn't really know any of them, though he might recognize them from seeing them around campus.

George and Smith don't know any of these people at M.U.

It's at this point we find out that Ma Gerwig is absoloutely fine, she's just on the ceiling.

Talk to the really tall patient who "practices" being dead a lot, Walter, he'll believe you!

Hey. Before I make my next post, I wanted to see if we are reflecting the views of the time? I've sent the keeper a PM already, but I was wondering if Christine would object to Frank using the front door? And if players OOC are ok with that mentality IC.

Didn't say it was setting. It's going behind a row of tall trees. Also, within any time zone, sunset occurs at varying times. This is not important to the story, just a bit of color.

In reply to Christine Blake Theaker (msg # 43):

I don't want to fully model the racism/sexism of the time, especially among the investigators.

Christine in particular is a modern young woman from NYC and has probably been to the Cotton Club in Harlem among other nightspots with colored performers, even spoken with Negroes. She may be a bit uncomfortable about neighbors seeing a black man being entertained in her home, but seems to have enough "go to hell" attitude to be defiant about it.

Many towns in New England also were hotbeds of Abolition before the Civil War and were very accepting of free blacks, including ones educated in their very colleges.

My preference is to leave any racism and sexism to the unenlightened NPCs we may encounter. Some of the investigators may be surprised that a Negro could even get a PI license, but McTavish obviously accepted the situation without a quibble and he's the ultimate boss.

This is ultimately up to Frank's player, who should have the final say in how much gets swept under the rug in the interests of ease of investigation, but if someone does object to Frank being anywhere George'd show them both in together anyway because he thinks it's foolishness. With the social standing of an older white man. So...hypothetically Christine could tell her scandalised neighbors she couldn't dissuade the curmudgeonly old fellow, kind of thing.

I/George offer this as a standing excuse to getting Frank anywhere local whites are going to clutch pearls about such things. George is too old to care and has met British crews; he has no illusion society will collapse without the colour bar.
