Penance stare or not, what needed to be done is done... and really does the Rider care about a little harmless personal gain?  It would be a shame if Felicia spent all night getting her hands dirty without anything to show for it.

So, a little bit of sticky fingers on the shield, slip away while they're all paying attention to Kassady?  Perfect.  Dreamer or whatever her name is can buy it back at auction if she needs it so bad.

Re: Current Mission: Maximum Carnage

One by one, the vigilantes grapple with the lingering effects of Carnage's memories, transferred into them by the misfocused "Penance Stare." Some-- like Domino and Spider-Woman-- have no shortage of experience in grappling with a dark past, and are all the better for it. As Daredevil calls out to them, they manage to shake off the worst of the effects and come back to the light.

For the others-- particularly, it seems, those possessing a symbiotic nature-- shrugging off the side-effects is not so easy. As Venom tries to calm the panic of his newly-bonded "Flock," it quickly proves to be no small task. Eddie Brock can tell already that caring for these creatures-- healing their trauma and helping them to forget Kasady's cruelty-- is going to be a long-term project.

Meanwhile, Moon Knight finds himself assisted once again by his own symbiote companion. Spared the worst of the Ghost Rider's gaze by "Lunacy's" quick thinking, he nonetheless finds his mind swirling in eddies of Kasady's making. Marc can't help but remember back to his duel with Carnage inside his Hell's Kitchen headquarters. The villain had linked their minds, dove into Marc's memories, and even tried to kill the other voices in Marc's head. It was like he was trying to accomplish... something... but what?

As for Mayhem, she seemed to have experienced nothing short of a mental breakdown following her telepathic attack on Kasady. For now, she lies unconscious in the form of a loose, blue puddle on the ground. Whatever memories might come back to haunt her later, whether her own or Kasady's, one must hope she finds the strength to face them again.

And as for the Black Cat-- where is Felicia Hardy? One has to wonder how the cat burglar found the wherewithal to slink away while the others were fighting their mental battles. Perhaps it's sheer habit that guides her to move discreetly toward the Dream's shield, even as she struggles with the dark memories flooding her mind. Maybe focusing on her profession-- and the payday that shield could bring her-- is her own way of coping.

Daredevil, Domino, and Spider-Woman end the adventure with no complication. Black Cat, Mayhem, Moon Knight, and Venom take some narrative baggage.

Re: Current Mission: Maximum Carnage

For the final action of the game, Black Cat succeeds in stealing the American Dream's shield.

As Black Cat puts her heist plan into effect, she must ponder how to nab that shield without drawing too much attention to herself. Though it appears the Dream has collapsed from the Rider's visions, it's no safe bet that she won't get back up any second now. And a prolonged fight with an angry super-soldier might not be at the top of Felicia Hardy's bucket list.

Fortunately, a distraction arises.

*SHRIIIIPPP*

Without warning, the spider-web placed over the hole in the stadium wall abruptly tears loose. Angry civilians come barreling through the gap, knocking the Heroes for Hire aside. But who are these faces in the crowd? Certainly none Felicia recognizes, as she blends in among them and steals the shield off Carnage's body, though the others might:

At the head of the brigade is a shotgun-wielding deli owner, whose store was set on fire by the Demogoblin earlier. Leashed to his burly arm is some sort of freakish canine-- recognized perhaps only by Daredevil's keen senses as Tito the Chihuahua, who Spidey rescued from the blazes. The tiny dog has taken on a startling, slime-covered appearance since they last met, having apparently stuck his nose into a loose symbiote.

Nearby, Moon Knight's associate Frenchie marches in lock-step with the crowd, armed with his own military implements. Walking with little effort on his repaired prosthetics, one would have to look into his eyes to truly know the pain he's endured tonight. If he sees Marc, a simple nod is his only greeting.

Here, too, are the three looters Spider-Woman encountered at the Sanctum. From how each one looks in her direction, it might seem they seek to impress the heroine who earlier enchanted them. And if they have any thoughts about getting their hands back on Dragonfang-- well, one stern look from Jessica is enough to make them reconsider.

The presence of this angry mob can be traced to one reason, plain as day. They are here to avenge their city. They are here to hack away at the very roots of the madness that has consumed it. They are here to find Cletus Kasady, and end his life. But it appears someone has already beaten them to the punch.

"Mon Dieu," Frenchie murmurs. "What happened here?"

Re: Current Mission: Maximum Carnage

"War happened," Moon Knight replied. Frenchie knew that Marc didn't use that word lightly, or even metaphorically. This had been a war, albeit perhaps on a smaller scale than those they'd fought in before. "We won."

With a flex of his new symbiote-shapeshifting ability, he shucked the cable that Daredevil had bound him with* and handed it back. Hornhead had earned a little respect with his maneuver, and Moon Knight bore him no grudge.

"Carnage is dead."

Re: Current Mission: Maximum Carnage

The ersatz looters brought Spider-Woman back to the moment. When they cut their eyes toward Dragonfang, she cut them her most withering glare. “That’s right! Keep moving.” She shouted after them, “You’re lucky you’re not spending the night in jail!” Jessica snatched up the Valkyrie’s sword.

Then, Jessica looked around at the motley crew of vigilantes. “How are you all holding up? Greer?” She approached Tigra, but didn’t touch her yet. The Penance Stare fucked Tigra up a second time in her life. She stared incredulously at Ghost Rider. “Look, thanks for taking down Carnage, but you also nearly took us all out. I’m not crazy about you mind-raping one of my friends again, either, man.”

Re: Current Mission: Maximum Carnage

In reply to Spider-Woman (msg # 722):

"Not his fault," Tigra mutters through shaking gasps. Having dragged herself to Kasady's body, she kneels beside it, casting a spell. As she draws a glowing hand over the killer's face, strange markings are suddenly revealed around his eyes. The sorceress shakes her head, lost in thought for a moment before she continues:

"It was a trap. Set by that evil demon-- the same one that transformed Carnage into a giant monster, and lent him its power. My identification spell confirms it-- what just happened to us was the work of a demon called the 'Predator.'"

Even with the many civilians now streaming into the stadium, it's as though Tigra doesn't even notice them. If her allies are hearing the Sorcerer Supreme's words, they can sense her desperation increasing as she continues, heedless of the crowd's presence:

"I heard Kasady mention a demon earlier, but I missed all the signs. The Predator is a lesser demon that lives inside Cloak's darkforce dimension. I know a bit about it from Wong. It must have sensed the chaos Kasady unleashed tonight, and it wanted to use the opportunity for its own gain."

She shakes her head, looking from Spider-Woman to the Ghost Rider and back. Her eyes are pleading with them both to believe her words.

"I know how demons like the Predator think. All they crave is power and status among their kind, and the best way to build their rep is by messing with a protected realm like Earth. That's why it chose Kasady to be its pawn here in New York. That's why it placed that curse on him... so that when the Rider got hold of Carnage, his Penance Stare would burn not just Kasady, but his enemies, too."

Greer beats a fist against the earth, so weak and exhausted that she can barely accomplish even that simple act.

"Dammit. I should have seen the bigger picture."

Eddie gets to his feet, "Carnage was chaos and evil personified, he sought to make everyone share in the suffering he'd embraced." He takes a shaky step away from Carnage, "Venom is angry that he did not deal the final blow. But for me, I'm just tired."

He looks over at Spiderman, "I have no idea what to do now, not often been on the mostly winning side."

Though Parker would normally have a trademark quip at the ready, a quick glance reveals Spider-Man unconscious somewhere in the grass near Eddie. Having already sacrificed a great deal for his city tonight, it appears the wall-crawler's visions were one taxing ordeal too many. As some of the civilians notice his condition and go to check on him, it seems a safe bet that he could be safely left in their hands. The black symbiote he once wore is gone, having strangely vanished while he and his allies were afflicted by the Penance Stare. And from the web-slinger's peaceful expression, it's almost as though the Ghost Rider's judgment has purified whatever was troubling his soul.

When Spider-Man's only response to Jessica is a deep snore, Tigra chimes in again:

"Is he alright? Looks like he could use a bed, at least. Wong set up an infirmary back at the Sanctum. I might have enough juice left to take us there."

Glancing at the others as she prepares to open the portal, she adds, warmly: "Open invite."

I'll let everyone decide how they want to depart the scene. Unless I see you're going with Tigra, I'll assume you either left alone or with the NPC in the scene who's closest to you.

The last remaining item on the checklist is to destroy Carnage's body, along with his symbiote. I'm planning to have Carrion perform that honor, unless anyone objects. But not before Domino and Deadpool get proof of their bounty.

“Hey, Greer. Do you have any spell that can dispose of Carnage’s body?” Spider-Woman didn’t care about money, but she needed to ensure that Carnage was truly eliminated. She grabbed a fallen lawn canopy and wrapped it around Cletus Kassady’s corpse. Then, Jessica picked up the body and headed for the portal. “Can you help Spider-Man, Tigra?”

"Girlfriend," she stated, in a way that suggested that Domino didn't even know what the word meant, "You seem to have accidentally picked up something that belongs to 'Pool and me.
You mind giving it back 'fore you leave?   The head will do just fine, if you've got playtime plans for the other bits

"Ok," she said, going out on a limb in trusting others, "But don't screw me over" she felt like adding, but instead said, "I'll give you the opportunity to keep your word".

She glanced at Deadpool, to see if he was coming along or not.

Re: Current Mission: Maximum Carnage

The people of New York crowd the heroes and vigilantes, their numerous bodies now interspersed between them. Some are working on putting out the last few fires, while others remain focused on finding Kasady. They prod at the charred bodies of the Bio-Preds, confused as to the presence of the many Carnage look-alikes. Then, as Spider-Woman hefts Kasady's body, followed by Domino through Tigra's portal, a murmur moves through the crowd:

"Is that his body?"

"What happened?"

"Did they get him?"

"Where are they taking him?"

Any of the the sorcerer's allies who are moving to follow her to the Sanctum Sanctorum might find it difficult to reach the portal in time, with so many of NYC's residents standing cluelessly in their way. Even the Ghost Rider, recovering from the shock of Kasady's rebounding curse, seems to be growing agitated with their presence. As a few begin to pester him with questions, he only growls in response.

"Out of my way!" Ben Urich shouts, fighting his way through the crowds. Glasses askew, he looks around for some sign of Daredevil. "I need to know if he's OK!"

As for the vigilantes unaccounted for, most are now departing. Venom has already swung off with his symbiotes in tow, and the crowds have offered plenty of cover for the Black Cat to slip away with her brand new shield. Though Tigra casts a hopeful glance toward Moon Knight, it's clear Marc's companion Frenchie would prefer to see him home instead. That only leaves the unconscious Mayhem remaining, whose liquid form the civilians-- for the most part-- step carefully around. How-- or to where-- the symbiote-hybrid heroine will be transported remains to be seen. Tigra might even be pondering a spell to get it done... But when she looks again, the blue puddle has mysteriously disappeared.

Will lock this thread around 12:00 A.M. PST.

Re: Current Mission: Maximum Carnage

When the civilians continue to mill around in confusion-- perhaps unsure or untrusting of Carnage's supposed death-- the Spirit of Vengeance revs his engine to get their attention.

"Listen to me. Cletus Kasady is dead!" announces the Ghost Rider, his demonic shout filling the stadium. "Now return to your homes, all of you. Tend to your wounded. And repent yourselves of the sins you partook in this night."

With a fiery scowl, he adds:

"Or I shall help you in that process."

"Thanks, Bonehead," Tigra calls. "Make sure they get home safe, now, and see you around. Maybe we can go kick the Predator's demonic ass after I get some rest."

Stepping across the portal's threshold, she looks around the stadium one last time. Satisfied that emergency services have finally begun to arrive, with police and firemen doing their best to evacuate the civilians, she gives one last shout:

"Is that everyone? How about you, Misty? Boys?" Then, as the portal shrinks, her voice carries through one final time:

"You guys all know where to find us! 177A Bleecker Street! Big house with a fancy window, can't miss it! See you all--"

And then the portal winks closed, and she and the others are gone.

THE END

A HUGE thank you to everyone who played in this adventure, especially those who stuck it out the whole way through. Hope to see you all in the epilogue, and the many adventures to come.
