Re: Current Mission: Maximum Carnage

Daredevil stands between the mob and justice and Carnage, and the lass in the Captain America get-up is all that stands between vigilantes and their own so-called "justice" on Carnage. The battle-lines being drawn are coming clearer. He might assume that he could count on Luke, Danny, and Misty (and Pete, wherever he went) on his side, but any others are wild cards at best. Calming the crowd might take some tension out of this scene, but there's a lot of momentum to slow down. Using his senses to find the weak points -- those not entirely convinced of their rage -- could help.

"Back off, folks," he says sternly, placing himself solidly between them and Cassidy, their point of intention and violence. "Nothing to see here. We've got it under control." Not sure if it will work, but he has his trusted billy club at his side, for any eventuality -- including stopping the fatal blow on Cassidy from a so-called "hero."

Emotional attack on Mob:
Team    d6
Man Without Fear (too many to persuade from anger; also distraction from keeping some attention on what's going on behind him with the others vs. Carnage)    d4
(+1 PP)
Hypersenses/Superhuman Senses    d10
Psych Expert    d8

Daredevil rolled 1,3,1,3 using d6,d4,d10,d8 ((1,3,1,3)).

Total: 6; Effect: d4 (default)
2 Opportunities

PPs: 4 (starting; from msg #590 (9/2)) +1 (negative Distinction) +1 (rolled Opportunity) = 6

He almost wishes they were all just infected by symbiotes so he could knock heads instead of trying to talk sense into crazed automatons.

In reply to Mayhem (msg # 664):

Imploring those around her with passionate pleas, Mayhem surges between the fighters. Instantly, she expands her form to again take the shape of a crude barrier. This time, though, she's not walling off the Bio-Preds from her allies. Rather, she's walling her allies off from each other. As she concentrates, she must fight off the stinging sensations of the stray embers floating through the air from the dying fires.

Doom Pool roll to see if Mayhem's asset succeeds (Total: 12, Effect: d10).

Doom Pool 2d6
Dying Embers d8

10:55, Today: The Watcher rolled 1,2,2 using 1d6,1d6,1d8.  Doom Pool reaction to Mayhem's attempt to wall off the fighters from each other.

Total: 4
Effect: d4
Opportunities: 1 (Available first to Mayhem)

Mayhem wins with extraordinary success, stepping up her asset to d12. Since it's the vigilantes who have Dream/Carnage on the defense, I think the easiest way to handle the mechanics is to add "Barrier d12" to Dream's reactions, until Mayhem changes shape or the asset is removed by a dice action.

Unwilling to let such a small thing distract her in her goal, Mayhem holds strong. To either side of her are the various heroes and vigilantes in her vicinity-- the American Dream and Carnage on one side, and to the other, the Black Cat, Domino, Moon Knight, and Spider-Woman. Anyone trying to get at the other side would have to go over or around her makeshift barrier.

Next: Mob Reaction to Daredevil

Apologies for my recent absence. Work's had me pretty exhausted but I'm back in the saddle now.

"Because we're not hurting anyone else tonight. Because we aren't going to murder Cletus Kasady out of anger or greed or a misplaced sense of justice, because that's his superpower, that's what's bringing that angry mob of innocent people down on our heads-- that's how he gets what he wants, that's how he gets us to kill each other for him, that's how he gets to leave this stadium alive and kill again and again and again."

She creates a face in the wall near to where Moon Knight is addressing her. "I'm not stopping you from killing Cletus, American Dream is. I'm stopping you from hurting her. And I'm stopping her from hurting you, because we are not going to fight each over this piece of crap tonight or ever again."

"We're going to take a step back, and calm down, and then we are all going to murder Cletus Kasady like the rational adult superheroes that we are and... some of us--" she casts worried glances at some of the gathered heroes, "are going to have a real hard time with this, and maybe some of us should be here to remind them the slope's not that slippery, and it's not a one-way trip, and the reason it feels so bad is that killing an animal like Carnage isn't the same as becoming like him."

Re: Current Mission: Maximum Carnage

Domino stood, tired, nearby.
Fucking Heroes ... every one of them here that had lived through this night agreed on what had to happen.
But one Fucking Hero, who hadn't, and turned up for a post-credits scene, thought she knew better.

Domino sighed to herself, and shook her head ... but let the Heroes talk this out, so that their precious values, egos and principles could be appeased.
She looked to Deadpool beside her, to see how he was taking in this Kangaroo Court:   cos, it seemed, we were now having some kind of self-appointed trial.

She could see and hear that Moon Knight was as frustrated.   Of the entirety collected here for this little party, they were the only two she actually felt any kinship or respect for, really.
If either of them made a move ... she'd be hard pressed not to follow them, or take action to support them.

The guns in her hand hummed with anticipation ... and she could almost feel the mystic bullets in her primary yearning for the blood promised to them.

In reply to Daredevil (msg # 666):

Step up 2d6 for Daredevil's 2 opportunities in Msg #666.

Doom Pool: 2d8

While the others are caught up in conversation, the horned hero called Daredevil steps forward to talk sense into the mob. Riled up as they are, it's anyone's guess how they might respond to his "suggestion:"
quote:
"Back off, folks. Nothing to see here. We've got it under control."

Mob reaction to DD's emotional attack (Total: 6, Effect: d4).

Mob 5d6
People of New York d4 (Just ordinary folks)

10:45, Today: The Watcher rolled 5,6,1,4,3,4 using 1d6,1d6,1d6,1d6,1d6,1d4.  Mob reacts to Daredevil's attempt to shoo them off.

Total: 11
Effect: d6
Opportunities: 1 (Available first to Daredevil)

Mob wins with extraordinary success, taking no stress. Add 1d6 for Mob's use of the "People of New York" distinction at d4.

Doom Pool: 2d8, 1d6

Rather than take heed of his words, the mob only seems emboldened. Shouting angrily, they surge past the Heroes for Hire, shoving the weary trio aside. Armed with all manner of makeshift weapons, they begin hacking at the spider-web that blocks the stadium entrance. They're clearly desperate to get inside-- to get at Carnage, even if it means taking on Daredevil and anyone else who stands in their way!

Re: Current Mission: Maximum Carnage

Over by the Doppelganger's side, the web-slinging hero called Spider-Man has fallen into a deep funk.

"Doppel! C'mon, buddy, hang on! Stay with me!"

But there is no use in his pleas. The Doppelganger's glassy eyes stare back at him, but they hold no sign of life. Carnage's deadly symbiote-spear has seen to that. Peter hangs his head in resignation as he realizes that, no matter how much he wishes otherwise, he is too late. The innocent, six-armed creature-- no, friend-- he called "Doppel," is dead.

"First, Dagger... now, Doppel... both dead, because we didn't stop him!"

Parker stands, his fists balled in anger. It's been all too easy to forget that tonight, the friendly neighborhood hero has been wearing a black symbiote costume spawned by Venom. And all at once, the ugly emotions symbiotes often exacerbate seem to be taking control of him at once. But even those who know the wall-crawler best might not guess at what he's about to do.

<THWIP!>

In a flash, Spider-Man somersaults into the air. A web-line snags Carnage and yanks him out of the Dream's grip, while his athletic flip carries Kasady and himself away from the group.

SLAM!

A hand that can crush solid metal pins Kasady violently to the ground, fingers closing around his throat. The other arm is cocked back, ready to deliver a crushing blow to the villains' face.

"Cletus, you murderer!" he seethes."I'm gonna break you in two!"

Spidey adds Superhuman Strength d10 to the Doom Pool.

"No!" growls the Ghost Rider, spinning his chain overhead like a lasso as he sets his sights on Spider-Man. "Cletus Kasady must live to face my judgment!"

Ghost Rider adds "Avenger of the Innocent" d8 distinction to the Doom Pool.

Doom Pool: 1d10, 3d8

Parker's raised fist trembles at his words, if only for an instant. But the black symbiote suit's grip on him appears to be strong. What could happen next is anyone's guess. Meanwhile, the roar of the mob assails the ears of all the heroes and vigilantes, as the angry civilians fight to get inside the stadium:

"Yeah, get him, Spidey!"

"That monster deserves it!"

"Just do it already!"

Mob 5d6 adds "Carnage Must Pay!" d8 distinction to the Doom Pool.

Doom Pool: 1d10, 4d8

There could be time enough for intervention-- benign or ill-- but that window is closing fast. A hero with preternatural reflexes could make all the difference here. Though for his part, Carnage only sneers:

"Do it, Parker! Kill me! Or don't you have the stones?!"

Re: Current Mission: Maximum Carnage

With the oncoming mob raging at his back, Daredevil moves toward the crux of the problem, stepping in somewhere near the middle of the fray, just out of reach of melee weapons. Ghost Rider is a bit too far away -- and a bit too supernatural -- to act on at the moment, so this one will have play out as it goes for the moment.

"You're better than that, Spidey," DD says evenly, his face attentively pointed at the wall-crawler like he's looking for something. "Has it ever been a good idea to give a villain what they want?"

The horned hero turns toward the others. "Anyone else here a murderer?" Daredevil says, already in a slightly hunched position, ready for an unpleasant reaction. "I.e., the bad guys that we're supposed to be dedicated to take down? You remember what heroes are?"

Daredevil swivels slightly, to anticipate the next move from whomever is going to change from ally to opponent.

Re: Current Mission: Maximum Carnage

Domino sneered.    She didn't even bother entering any kind of debate about her methods or motives or morals.
Sure, Spider-Man might be 'better than that', but Domino was a Hardened Mercenary who wasn't swayed by such pathetic parlay.

Now that Spider-Man had pulled her Primary Target out from the protection he had been behind, and Domino had her Buddy by her side, her Superhuman Reflexes and Combat training kicked in.
"He's right, Spider-Man, you ain't got the stones",  'But I do!'

... and she pulled the trigger on her Guns, that were loaded with the Symbiote Killing bullets.

Spider-Man WAS better than that ... and he DIDN'T have the stones.
So Domino would do it for him.
For ALL of them that had survived the night, and knew what needed to be done.

Action:   give Carnage the complication 'DED'  ... no, just kidding, I'm just killing him ... again, for the third time this night.
d10 Buddy
d8   Hardened Mercenary
2d8 Guns
SFX: Full Auto. Against a single target, step up or double a Guns die. Remove the highest rolling die and use three dice for your total.
d10 Superhuman Reflexes
d10 Combat Master
d8  "Symbiote-Seeking Bullets" resource
d10 SFX: Lady Luck On My Side. Spend 1 PP to borrow the highest die in the doom pool as an asset for your next action; then step back and return the doom die.

- rolled 2,1,3,4,9,1,2,1 using d10,d8,d8,d8,d10,d10,d8,d10.  Shoot Carnage dead ... again.
SFX: Second Chance. If your pool includes a Probability Manipulation power, Spend 1PP to reroll.
- rolled 10,2,7,8,9,2,2,1 using d10,d8,d8,d8,d10,d10,d8,d10.
I didn't add in a die for Carnage's Physical Stress/Trauma, cos I'm not sure what its at.
I'll  be happy to leave this roll as is, without said die ... if you'd be so kind as to leave out the 'Jinxed' complication Dom has.
Total: 24
Effect: d10
Opps: 1

Return Doom Pool d10 as d8, thank you very much.

"I am. I ki-- murdered-- a whole lot of people. Most of them... probably could have turned their lives around, if I hadn't stolen that chance from them. If I'd just slapped them around a little like you and Dad did, gave them over to the cops, and... you know, if I'd checked up on them, tried to help them. Like a hero."

"That's not what's going to happen here. You know it. We're going to 'take Cletus down' and then what? We're going to turn him over to the... who? SHIELD? SWORD? Who are we going to turn Cletus Kasady over to, who's going to help him be anything else but this, who isn't going to try to turn him into an even deadlier weapon-- and be shocked when he gets out and does what he always does?"

"You tell me who's going to put Carnage in a box and keep him there, and I'll help you protect him from them--" she waves a tentacle at Domino and Spider-Man "-- and even from them," the crowd, "until the cavalry arrives. But if all you're talking about is how we're going to hand this off to the NYPD and pat ourselves on the back for 'doing the right thing', well, we already know how that ends and that makes us responsible for it."

"Killing Cletus Kasady ourselves isn't 'heroic', but it's the option that saves the most lives tonight. You want us to 'do better', you need to come up with a better idea."

Stepping up 1d8 in the Doom Pool from Domino's opportunity in Msg #677.

Doom Pool: 1d10, 4d8

Spend 1d10 to interrupt Domino with the Ghost Rider. He lends Carnage his Godlike Durability in the form of an asset, "In The Rider's Custody" d12.

Doom Pool: 4d8

Seeing Spider-Man hesitate, the Ghost Rider growls. Lowering his chain, he guns the engine of his motorcycle, charging straight at him. The web-slinger leaps clear just as the skeletal figure places his own body between Domino's bullets and Carnage's pathetic form. Though the bullets strike Johnny Blaze's immortal body to little effect, it isn't long before the symbiote-seeking rounds zip around him to hit their intended mark: Cletus Kasady!

"An enchantment?" Blaze mutters, turning to see how Kasady fares. "Impressive."

Carnage fights to survive, with his shield and the Rider defending him. (Reaction to Domino, Total: 24 / Effect: d10).

Solo d10

Superhuman Reflexes d10

Total: 24
Effect: d12
Opportunities: 1 (Available first to Domino)

Domino wins. Carnage's higher effect die steps back the physical trauma he takes to d8.

Behind Johnny Blaze, the symbiotic killer grips the American Dream's shield for dear life, clinging to it like a drowning rat to a piece of driftwood. He only gives the occasional yelp as another bullet strikes him while he cowers helplessly.

"You want vengeance on this one?" Blaze calmly addresses the group. Suddenly, chains slither off of his form to take Kasady in their grip. "So do I. Tell me... What sins has he visited upon you all?"

Since it was clear that Moon Knight was going to throw down before he even sneered, Daredevil has been ready for the attack before the supposed “hero” even put a murdering shoulder down. MK has already stated which side of this divide he’s on, but only DD could sense just one imperceptible shudder, a miniscule betrayal of the tough exterior, but plenty for DD to know he has an opening, just enough for room to side-step the approaching strike. By the time Moon Knight finally arrives at Horn-Head, the hero of Hell’s Kitchen has already tracked multiple, suddenly-hostile objects -- normally a trick using a radar sense that usually works best on a singular plane -- and been ready to shift his weight out of the way then lasso his billy club’s cable around the once-ally as he charges past, matador-style. DD would bark an ole! if the current situation wasn’t so dire and this wild card needed to be taken down. In only the next moment Daredevil has roped Moon Knight a few more times, not to encircle him too snugly, but enough to keep him out of the danger he’s bringing on himself and everyone here. While Moon Knight negotiates with the cable, Daredevil says behind him, “It’s one thing to beat up criminals in the dark. It’s another to be that criminal.”

Daredevil turns his back to the grateful Spidey, the ensnared Moon Knight, and the other hostiles he once considered allies, and directs his attention to Ghost Rider, with Carnage in his fiery clutches. The blind hero knows that his physical weapon will do little good against ethereal hellfire, but he grips his billy club tighter out of habit anyway. He’s no match against a demon from Hell, but saving a life is worth the risk, as any real hero knows. Ghost Rider! Daredevil hollers. “This is a mortal matter! The purplish symbiote she wears suddenly covers her face for an instant. "But Flag Girl is infuriatingly preachy."

"Quiet down, Symba," Greer shushes her companion. She looks again to Spider-Woman, her closest friend among the group. "Jess, doesn't SHIELD know you've got a kid at home? There's no reason for you to get your hands dirty with stuff like this. Not anymore."

She watched the supernatural vigilante with senses keener than the human eye, watching for any tells from an entity that could be called “Fearsome”, “Intimidating”, and “Inscrutable” on the best day. “I can’t claim to really know you or your mission. We’ve rarely worked together…if ever. However, what I DO know is that Daredevil got one thing wrong.”

Jessica swallowed and steeled herself to meet Ghost Rider’s eye. “You impart your brand of Justice in THIS life. Not the next one,” she said with a quick corrective glance at Daredevil. Hey, any excuse to look away from the Rider.

“Cletus Kassady is an unrepentant murderer, a psychopath who delights in maiming and killing the kind of innocents that you’re sworn to protect! I’ve lost count of the lives that he’s gleefully stolen. He vowed to not only kill everyone here, but our families, too.”

Jessica turned away and locked eyes with Greer. “I’m not the only mother here, Tigra. My child is only a year or two younger than yours. Carnage nearly took you from your child tonight. He nearly stole a mother from her son, and the new Sorcerer Supreme from this world.”

Spider-Woman spun back around to look at Ghost Rider. “You’re sworn not only to avenge the innocent, but protect them, too, right?! How successfully would you perform your mission if Carnage had killed Tigra, kept her magic? Look, we’ve all fought Carnage, or know someone who has! We keep fighting him, then throwing him in prison, hoping we can lock him away for good this time.”

With a weary sigh, Spider-Woman slowly shook her head. “It never works. Carnage just escapes again, and more people die. You have the power to end his menace for good. Do it.” Standing straighter, Spider-Woman stared at Ghost Rider with unwavering resolve. “End his threat, and ensure that he never kills anyone else.”

In reply to Venom (msg # 665):

quote:
"We have given him to the Spider family time and time again. They do as you say, test, experiment, and lose control. Sheppard no longer wants to kill him but remove his power, to take away the blessings that he abuses. Venom's child is lost to the mind of Cletus Kasady. Speak to your friend before Carnage consumes her in his insanity."

Spider-Man shakes his head. "We'd already thought Kasady lost the symbiote for good, before any of this started. From what we've witnessed, I wouldn't be surprised if it it's bonded to him on a cellular level by now. Every time it's been taken from him, it's found its way back, or even regenerated inside his body. It's how he got loose from Ravencroft. It's how all of this happened."

He looks over at Venom, and suddenly snaps to attention.

"Wait. Eddie! With these new powers of yours, maybe you could take away Kasady's symbiote. For good this time. Just like how you pulled those other symbiotes out of him. Or how you healed Doppel. Separate Kasady from the Carnage symbiote, then purge whatever trace of it is left in his blood."

He looks at Venom with hope in his eyes. Hope that, however many times it is extinguished, always seems to flicker back to life. Hope that maybe, just maybe, the good guys can win without any more bloodshed.

"Try it. On me. Take away this black suit that almost helped me to murder." He holds out his hands, waiting for Eddie's response.

In reply to Black Cat (msg # 681):

Add 1d8 to the Doom Pool for Black Cat's 2 opportunities in Msg #681.

Doom Pool: 5d8

Felicia scopes out the star-spangled shield Carnage is clinging onto for dear life. No doubt it would make a perfect addition to the Black Cat's collection. The only complicating factor is that the shield is affixed to the killer's arm via a thick leather strap. It's an unexpectedly deft move for the American Dream to have buckled it to Kasady's arm before he was pulled out of her grip. Only a cunning thief like Felicia Hardy herself could truly appreciate a sleight-of-hand move so crafty. It's cause enough to think there could be more to "Lady Cap" than meets the eye. And yet, the cat burglar who built her reputation on carrying out the most daring of heists knows that shield will be hers!

Re: Current Mission: Maximum Carnage

Eddie sighs and walks over to Spiderman and puts a hand on his shoulder, "We have tried to explain this so many times. Carnage isn't a symbiote, Carnage and Kassady are the same. We hate Carnage because Kassady found a way to kill the symbiote's individuality and become a broken amalgamation that named itself Carnage."

If the symbiote within Spiderman agrees Eddie will allow it to join his Flock, "But these symbiotes are children they get excited when we do. Aggression releases a lot of delicious chemicals, but I understand why you wouldn't want to experience that feedback again, it's addicting."

He steps past Spiderman and towards Carnage, "You are a poor actor Carnage at least Kassay could pull off innocent properly. You couldn't con a sucker out of a cig with that act. Did you false family ruin your pride so much you can't recover?"

OOC
No dice again as Eddie doesn't want to risk his Flock being infected again with Carnage's insanity and thinks all this is a act as he should have recovered his legs by now.
