Timer Complications

Seeing as this is our first time implementing a Timer complication in the game, here's what the Annihilation sourcebook says about them:

quote:
The Watcher may spend a doom die of any size to create a Timer complication. This defaults to d6, but particularly time-crunched situations (as stated in the Action Scene) may start higher. Place the Timer in the action order as if it were a Watcher character. Whenever it acts, the complication automatically steps up to the next die size. If it reaches beyond d12, it immediately doubles and moves to the doom pool, giving the Watcher the power to end the Scene. The Timer complication is also included in any Watcher reaction pool where time is a factor.

The heroes can target the Timer complication with tactics that could slow it down. Any such attack or effort to reduce the Timer complication may be opposed by a Watcher character in a position to oppose it, with a dice pool that includes the Timer complication; if nothing else, oppose the heroes with the doom pool plus the Timer complication. If the hero’s action total is higher, and the effect die is equal to or higher than the Timer complication, it steps back. Otherwise, it has no effect. As the Watcher, you may spend from the doom pool to step up the Timer if your reaction effect die is equal to or larger than the Timer’s current rating. Likewise, Watcher characters that are in a position to help can step the die up, unless successfully opposed by a hero.

The Timer is used in cases where the oncoming force is so powerful that the complication can never be eliminated from the Scene—it can only be stepped back to a d4. The Watcher may move the complication back to the doom pool at any time, if the heroes prove to be too annoying or if they flee.

I plan to disregard the last couple sentences, and allow the Timer to be removed just as any complication could be. However, it's worth noting the players in the stadium effectively have just two turns to get rid of those missiles!

Good morning, folks.
Where I am, I've just awoken on the morning of Halloween.   And my family has some big plans for the day.  It might be a tomorrow, or even Monday (48'ish hours) before I post again, I regret.

But hoping to have some fun with the new toys.
Thanks Watcher.

Domino out.

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween, everybody. Here's some behind-the-scenes info for you, if it's a fun treat:

This Maximum Carnage event was originally conceived of as a Halloween-themed adventure for my old IRL group. We got through four sessions before some players moved away, work schedules changed, and various other things came up. There were a few attempts to finish it (re-imagined as a Valentine's Day event featuring Carnage and Shriek), but once the pandemic hit, a lot of that went out the window. None of the old players ended up in this PbP campaign, except for Tigra (who's played by my girlfriend). I'm grateful to have found this group here on RPoL to complete the adventure with!

There was always planned to be more going on in the background of the event. Some of that involves current PC's-- especially ones that had been played in the old game (Daredevil and Spider-Man, chiefly)-- but I never wanted to leave any of the new players too beholden to things that occurred before they took over the characters. Those old sessions now form a sort of prologue, and a summary can be read here if anyone might find it interesting:

https://docs.google.com/docume...EBaKF8TMNFx6m30/edit

(Yes, basically the whole thing was Hawkeye's fault.)

Hope everyone has a fun and safe Halloween!

I've had a shift change at my job that's thrown me for a loop, but I'm planning to get some new posts up in the next couple of days. Spidey, glad you're back with another excellent post. Tigra/Spider-Woman, you have the opportunity for a quick diceless post to help me determine what actions you'll have in this round. (Basically, if you decide to check up on Moon Knight, head to the stadium, or split up.)

New Posts

Planning to have a new post up later today. I've been working on getting a new player added into the game. (Probably the last one I'll allow now that we're coming into the final stretch of the event, unless it's someone wanting to take over an existing Watcher hero.) Thanks all for your patience.

That would be me. Thank you for taking me on, thank you for allowing me to play my favorite Marvel character of all time, thank you for moving so quickly.

IC, Mayhem is female and female-presenting when not deliberately shapeshifting otherwise. She is of indeterminate/inconsistent age in her default form, though she generally appears to be between her late twenties and her early forties-- generally the angrier or more insecure or impatient she is, the younger she looks, while being calmer or more patient or reflecting on sorrows or regrets makes her older.

She is trying to conceal her nature and her origins and her identity from everyone, especially Spider-Man. I'm doing this badly on purpose, so feel free to call her on it when it would amuse you.

OOC I'm a middle-aged man, he/him, a failed and still aspiring game designer more in the OSR sphere than Cortex. I taught myself to read with Marvel Comics years before I was enrolled in kindergarten.

My username, Shroompunk, is derived from my current work-in-progress and what I currently consider my life's work: an "old school" D&D clone that tries to emulate the weird, cosmic powered, over-the-top style of fantasy roleplaying that was popular in the 1980s and I learned in the early 1990s... with a default setting based heavily on the cartoons and videogames of that era, especially the Masters of the Universe and Super Mario franchises.

Thanks for that great introduction to both a new player and character, Mayhem. I'm eager to see what April Parker brings to the campaign. And I'm always interested to know more about the players here, at least as far as they're interested to share. Welcome to the game!

Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving, everybody! Hope it's a relaxing and safe holiday for all.

As a quick update on the campaign: the original plan was to wrap up Maximum Carnage before the holidays. I could now see it lasting a few more months at least, maybe until March (which would make it a nice, even year-long adventure). I'm excited to discover how the story ends-- after all, it's in all of your hands as much as mine!

She's the version from the MC2 universe, following the events of Spider-Girl: The End She lost consciousness following the building collapsing on her, and woke up in the Life Foundation laboratory some time after Carnage's attack.

I'd prefer that you didn't recognize her at all, but if your Spider-Man participated in Spider-Verse or Spider-Geddon, you might have seen her at a distance-- by my reckoning, her participation in those events would have been during "the bad timeline" and only Mayday would have been able to get through to her... or anywhere near her.

She recognizes your costume and wonders who's wearing it. She'll be obviously uncomfortable around you unless she learns you're actually Peter Parker, then she'll be very uncomfortable.

I mean, you could. He dumped her in a fairly callous manner, so at least there’s precedent! :-D

Incidentally, after my next turn, the copter explodes. So if I try to help, I do more harm than good. So I might as well play it callously, since that's actually more helpful.

Irony.
