Operation Mississippi Blue - The Death of Bonner

En Route Briefing: Leamas gets a call from Blevins. Bonner is dead, they need to investigate and keep Schulte out of it. There's a uniform at the door keeping the site clean. He was discovered by the landlord, who lives on the premises. They have no clue what happened, they need you to find out.

Bonner's Note to Mr. Green:
"Dear Mr. Green,
If you're reading this, it means I've reached the end of my rope. I did my best. Notes are inside. Yes, that is really it. There is one loose end: there is a shipping container at Port NOLA, in the custody of New Orleans Harbor Police. Talk to Edgar, he's not with the program but he can let you in if you tell him you need to "water the roses." Inside the container is a granite slab. An agent needs to smear human blood on it once a month to keep it contained. Don't try to destroy it. This is much simpler. Trust me, and be thankful if that's the only blood you lose in this fight.

Good luck, godspeed, and do not suffer a witch to live."

Bonner's Little Black Book: It is written in a cipher only readable with SIGINT 40%. It's a simple cipher commonly used in the Air Force, Bonner was too lazy to record these daily notes in anything less.

Most of the pages are censored. Bonner has painstakingly run through previous entries with a black marker. Only the most recent date, from well over a month ago, is intact. The notes are divided into two sections: "Active Groups" and "Active Sites." Active Groups reads, in full:

quote:
PROFESSIONAL CORPORATION - "First responders. Status: active. Leamas and Knifewater known operators, may require room service soon. Good effect on target. Messy." The contact number Leamas gave Bonner is listed here.
TEA COMPANY - "General response and research for cognitively hazardous targets. Status: disbanded. Seeking new talent from friendly academic assets and DIA. Kelsey will be hard to replace. Barnes AWOL."
HOME ON THE RANGE - "GB maintenance, logistics. Status: active. Just Russel ATM. Letting him cool off from WV incident."
BIKE ROUTE - "Clean-up, 2nd stringers. Status: active Currently assigned to general surveillance. Bith is self-sourcing friendlies. Still clean(clear?)"
ROOM SERVICE - "Status: inactive. The door kickers. Still sourcing replacement talent. Fuck Schulte. Jonagold still alive, assigned HOTR style to #5."

"Active Sites" is just strings of numbers. SIGINT, Navigation or Intelligence -20% reveals that they're coordinates, just longitude/latitude. Only a dozen are listed. #5 is in Juneau, Alaska. #3 is in New Orleans, very nearby. #2 to #8 are listed with "GB" at the end. #1 corresponds to Memphis, and has the note "Yellowcake."

#1 - Memphis "Yellowcake"
#2 - Memphis GB
#3 - New Orleans GB "Maintenance Req."
#4 - Akron, OH GB
#5 - Alaska GB
#6 - Boston GB
#7 - Albuquerque GB "Break-In?"
#8 - Virginia GB - "Call Harvey ###-###-####"
#9 - New Orleans "Lucid Dreamer Cult"
#10 - Seattle - "D. Activity?"
#11 - Redding - "Weather"
#12 - Pillarsville - "Monitor 4 Recurrence"

Bundle of Notes: r/ bedhomies, hand-written notes "Brothers of Sleep." Article on missing person, Eric Flores. "Break-In" and "Yellowcake" have the same materials Leamas recognizes from Bith's folder. A page printed from a website for "Big Bayou Zoological Consulting, LLC" - the website is amateurish and is the professional page of Dr. Richard Radewagon, a herpetologist specializing in venomous snakes. He offers snake venom for sale for pharmaceutical research purposes from his website.

Operation Mississippi Blue - The Death of Bonner

Crime Scene Clues

Free Clue: The lock on the front door was forced in a manner that wouldn’t have made any noise. Norbert was killed in his home office, then seemed to have been moved to the bedroom. His body is laid out like a five pointed star, his chest cavity is peeled open with five incisions (0/1d4 SAN, triggering for Gould). Painted on the walls in black paint are the words: HAIL THE LORD OF SLEEP

Bonner's real name was Christopher Wiśniewski. Was formerly an active duty

Forensics, Chemistry, Medicine, Surgery or Alertness: Norbert had been drinking enough to impair him.

Search: Bonner was an alcoholic. There are a lot - a lot - of empty liquor bottles stored around the apartment. The sim card and hard drive are missing from his smartphone and laptop. These can’t be traced remotely. His gun - a beautiful Rock Island M15 - is missing. A handheld jigsaw is hidden in a bag under some old beer and whiskey bottles. The jigsaw was used to a cut a crude trapdoor into the flooring

Forensics, Medicine or Surgery: Cause of death was strangulation by a cable or rope applied from behind, crushing the airway and breaking the hyoid bone. Time of death was probably 11:00 PM on the 31st. The mutilation was postmortem. The cuts were made by someone who knew how to dissect a corpse.

Chemistry, Military Science: The paint is coal tar epoxy, the kind a mariner would use.

Forensics or Criminology: There are no fingerprints, the assailant wore gloves. The blinds on the office window are broken, like someone yanked on them. There may have been a struggle.

Persuade: The landlord, Ernest Agoston, can be interrogated. He discovered the body when Bonner failed to pay his rent on the first.

Searching outside: Outside the window, the bushes have broken branches, like someone was rummaging through them.

(Russel made noise in the bushes to lure him to the window, Barnes snuck up behind and strangled him)

Operation Mississippi Blue - The Death of Bonner

For Sunday:

- Knifewater is working in his FBI office when he sees that Bonner is on the FBI most wanted list.

- Crestercrunch is approached by April O'Neil, who brings him to her home office. Ricardo Perez has pieced together an image of the Johns Island art piece from recovered cell phone footage, and he's paralyzed. If Crestercrunch intervenes he can keep April as a Bond.

- Gould is greeted by his secretary late at night. He receives a case file regarding a previous workman's comp case. The claimant, a paraplegic who suffered a spinal cord injury on the job, reminds him of Kerrigan Carter, the woman in the wheelchair he shot at Odyessy Onward Design. Wait, did he shoot her? It's hard to remember...

- Leamas receives a call from Bonner. "It's now or never." He sets up a meet between him and Bith. Bith has a dossier of materials, he's looking for orders from Leamas on which to prioritize:

A) Yellowcake heroin sales in Memphis. A massive seizure in what Leamas recognizes as the affordable housing unit the working group failed to investigate. Dealers still need to be tracked down.
B) A break-in at a known green box site in Albuquerque, New Mexico. There needs to be an investigation into the burglars, and a full inventory of the contents (which are unknown).
C) A non-program analyst at the DIA has been poking around program case files and asking troublesome questions. Bith needs clearance to conduct an intimidation campaign. He may have to eliminate him, but thinks it's better to cow him into silence, or maybe even bully him into being an burnable asset.

Operation Mississippi Blue - The Death of Bonner

Dr. Richard Radewagon- A chubby older man, in his late 40s or 50s. A wild spray of white hair and a big bald spot, appropriate for a mad scientist or a severe alcoholic. A herpetologist specializing in venomous snakes, he synthesized a hallucinogen from the "Lord of Cold Dreams'" venom. Administers the doses. When shit hits the fan: he will get into his airboat and try to release the Lord into the swamps north of New Orleans.

Austin Redfield-  A young Republican type, a college student studying finance. Libertarian. Owns a legal firearm. Guarded the door during the murder. Tulane College student.

Wilson Chun - More loyal to his wife than the cult. Accountant for a non-profit in New Orleans.

Sara Chun - More loyal to the cult than her husband, but willing to ditch if it gets hot. An administrative assistant in the admissions office of Tulane College.

Lindsey West - Heavy set woman in her 40s or 50s with long brown hair. Hippie type. In love with Radewagon. The most fanatical. Helped kill and enjoyed it.  Sources the yellowcake.

Silvia Brown - Dental hygienist. New. Doesn't know about the murder. Saw a flyer in town and thought it was cool. Tulane College student.

Alex Harrington - Just a drug addict who doesn't want to go to jail.

Operation Mississippi Blue - The Death of Bonner

The NOLA Green Box

A freighter is intentionally kept in administrative hell here, owned by a (program-manipulated) shell corporation that refuses to pay legal fees, load or unload cargo, allow in maintenance crews, or otherwise move the damn thing. A program friendly will let in agents who give the pass phrase: "water the roses."

Contains the SLAB, which functions as follows:

quote:
Agents with a POW of 15 or higher feel a subliminal hum in the presence of the stone, like that of an electrical transformer in a drizzle (1 SAN).

Once the Agents are in the presence of the Slab it wakes up. When Agents are first alone with it, they experience the initial sensory hallucinations (see below). Keep track of the total SAN and WP lost by anyone because of the Slab’s influence.

Anyone touching the Slab with their bare skin loses 1 WP immediately, then another 1 WP per minute of contact.

The Slab stats at 0 WP and gains 1 for every SAN, WP or HP lost to it.

The entity in the slab can cast Infallible Suggestion (8 WP) or physically manifest for an hour (12 WP). Its physical form is a wild winged servitor, one that retains knowledge of Infallible Suggestion and coverts the HP and SAN loss of its targets into WP for itself. The servitor has a maximum WP of 10 if physically manifested, and no maximum if in the Slab.

If the Slab is destroyed, the servitor is immediately released with 10 WP. It has no maximum WP in this state, but it will lose 1 WP per hour, and die if it reaches 0. This is the only way to destroy it for good: destroy the slab and deprive it of WP. Otherwise the servitor will reconstitute in the Slab if reduced to 0 HP or 0 WP while physically manifested.

If left alone for roughly three months, the Slab will generate 1d6 WP on its own. This is why Bonner was "feeding it" blood once per month; it was better than having it burst out of containment unexpectedly once every year or so.

The Slab's Hallucinations

quote:
First Hallucination: 1/1d4 SAN. Distant humming or indecipherable muttering in a ritualistic cadence. Blood seeping through the folds of the tarp. Living trapped inside the tarp. Someone suddenly approaching them in a rearview or side mirror.
Touching the Stone: A body on the stone, barely visible under the tarp, bleeding out from multiple stab wounds or gory bites. Words carved into the Slab, weeping blood. Distant sobbing or screams. Sounds of crying and scratching from the Slab itself.
Promises: Visions are personal, promising whatever it can and senses the target wants in exchange for sacrifice. It takes an hour of being in the slab's presence to see the visions.

Knowing About the Slab:
quote:
Science (Geology) 10%: The slab appears to be gneiss, and probably weighs between five and six tons (around 4500 to 5500 kg).
Drive 30% or Heavy Machinery 10%: This is going to need a Class 3 truck or better to go anywhere.
Occult or Archaeology 30%: It looks like a sacrificial altar, or the capstone of a dolmen or trilithon.

Beyond the Slab
Most of the green box is centered around this slab. It looks like Russel has been sleeping here, a sleeping bag laid out on the small section of floor between the container wall and the slab. There is also a hot plate with a greasy frying pan on it, some canned food and MREs in cardboard boxes, a few jugs of water, and an open (used) chemical toilet. And yes, it smells in here. Pretty bad.

There is gunpowder, plastic PVP pipe, nails and ball bearings... Russel is making pipe bombs to repay the program for the supplies he's eating up waiting here. He's made three so far, and has materials for several more.

There is also a hand written sheaf of notes, also by Russel, listing fifteen separate methods to sabotage the brakes of a tractor trailer truck.

A small leather satchel containing a Remington 870 12 gauge shotgun, police magnum model, two boxes of buckshot, and a pair of brass knuckles with spikes crudely attached.

A Heckler & Koch HK416: D10RS. It is fitted with an ACOG scope, a fore grip, and a spring loaded back up iron sight.

The complete Harry Potter series. Russel kid "loved it."
