Last Things Last Items

Located in a vent by the door:

- A small black duffel bag containing an unloaded handgun, three fake passports and five fake driver's licenses with the deceased's face and various fake names, a heavy black Maglite, a hunting knife, a pair of striped boxers, and $10,000 cash.

Located in a trapdoor underneath the bookshelf:

- A copy of the King James version of the Bible. The pages containing any mention of the printing date or publisher information have been torn out.

Reading it yields:
quote:
The text that diverges radically from the standard version after the Binding of Isaac, which ends with Abraham sacrificing Isaac as a human sacrifice and God awarding Abraham with "favor beyond that of thy fellows." Cannibalism features prominently--David ritually devours Saul's heart to become the new king, and the Last Supper is depicted as a cannibalistic feast. The imagery of the Book of Revelation is, in contrast, largely the same as the original version, though includes several lengthy passages describing the two witnesses burning the "men of the yellow temples". 1/1d6 SAN if read in its entirety, 2 weeks to study and comprehend. Awards +1% Unnatural skill when read.

- A crinkled, faded religious tract. There is no address or church or sect listed anywhere on the pamphlet, just an illustration of a cross and a rose on the front. The text mostly deals with synchronicity and symbology, explaining how the Cross is a physical representation of the numerical ratio 3:2, and how the Rose is the symbolic representation of the perpetual series. The short text goes mentions "fractals and strange geometries" and how the world is built on ratios, and how ratios are the language of God, and how the word of God is a vibration pattern one can "tune" into. It makes little sense.

Attempting to study it with Mathematics yields: 0/1 SAN, +1 to Science (Mathematics)

- A page torn from a cookbook, detailing the traditional preparation of ortolan bunting drowned in Armagnac. The yellowed paper and language suggests it came from the 19th century or a bit earlier. There are rust-colored splotches staining the bottom portion of the recipe, rendering it illegible. Someone has scribbled in notes in the margins in French.

Translating the notes (requires no knowledge of French, can be easily Google-translated):
quote:
Written in an angry and vulgar tone, the writer suggests that the dish can "only" be served "raw and still kicking." Most of the letters are completely illegible.

In the Lockbox chained to the stove in the cabin:

- A small round (5" diameter, 1/2" thick) obsidian mirror framed in silver. The frame is formed as a stylized snake biting its own tail.

Looking into the mirror while letting moonlight fall:

quote:
After brief disconcerting moment when the mirror's surface seem to give off smoke, reveal a brief glimpse of the immediate (24 hour) future. The vision usually focus on life-threatening (to the viewer) events, but a strong-willed viewer may roll against his or her SAN to force a vision of a specific time and place (within 24 hours). Doing this costs 1d6 SAN. Just viewing an image without trying to force a specific one is 1/1d4 SAN.

- A small black flash drive, devoid of any exterior markings. There is a yellow Post-It note attached: "MR. GREEN - DO NOT USE. DANGEROUS VIRUS. DESTROY, DO NOT COPY"

Intelligence recognizes this handwriting as Baughman's.

If file is run:
quote:
The only file on it is a virus, executed automatically when plugged in. The virus is only compatible with Windows. It is ransomware, well-made but fairly standard, corrupting files by breaking the programming that opens the files. A ransom screen claims the device has been locked by the FBI, though every two hours it flashes onscreen a large Yellow Sign and the phrase "The Last King Is Come" so quickly that it is practically read subconsciously.

Anyone who views the sign:
quote:
Says “Tell me, have you seen the Yellow Sign?”. They are not aware of speaking these words, though the other investigators all hear them. (1/1D6 SAN). Those who fail their check are forever subtly tainted by the Yellow Sign.

- A crude, hand-stitched leather pouch. Inside are ashes and a mix of human and canine teeth.

In the closet of the cabin:
- A blood-stained suit with the Note in the pocket.

- A loaded hunting rifle on a gun rack.

In the shed of the cabin:

- Twenty jerry cans of gasoline.
- Fishing poles, a tacklebox, and fishing wire
- A wood axe
- A shovel
- Several empty bags of Quikrete

The Note:

If you are reading this note, I can assume I have died or become incapacitated before I had the courage to complete my final mission for the program. You will find about twenty gallons of gas in the shed behind this cabin. Pour them into the septic tank beside the cabin and ignite it. You'd be happier if you didn't look inside. Please make sure that the remains are kept from my children. I am so sorry. God please forgive me.

Howard Baughman
