OOC discussion
Hi everyone! Welcome to my "running Out of the Abyss As if It Were Masks of Nyarlathotep" experiment.

To make DnD more like CoC, I'm going to do a couple of things.

First, it's deadlier. I am not doing this by making combat itself deadlier (it's DnD, so there is inevitably combat, and I don't want constant TPKs). Instead, I am making recovering from combat more difficult. In the default DnD rules, you can get wounded, take a short rest, and suddenly you feel great again. Meaning that you don't have to think about whether to get into combat as much.

So, I am using one of the optional healing rules from the DM's Guide:

A SHORT REST TAKES 8 HOURS. A LONG REST TAKES 7 DAYS.

Second, in addition to using the madness rules from the DM's Guide, I will be using the fear rules as modified, provisionally, thusly.

If a creature has a Challenge Rating of twice your level or higher, it will provoke a fear check. If the creature is undead or of extraplanar origin (like demons, devils, celestials, elementals, fey, anything Not of This World), it will provoke a fear check if it is of your level or higher. The difficulty of this check will be 8 + the creature's CR. In addition, creatures of extraplanar origin will also provoke madness checks at the same difficulty, regardless of your level.

Please let me know when you've read this, and then we can do chargen.

If you want to. They're pretty simple.

I wanted to make fiends, celestials, elementals, "things from beyond" into more of mind-blasting Lovecraftian horrors. Maybe 8 + CR is too much and it should be 8 + 1/2CR?

A little bit later today (after the repairman leaves) I'll stick in some chargen instructions.

Read, with the caveat that I haven't played DnD for nearly 40 years  :)

It's more or less the same system. Just much more streamlined.

Re: OOC discussion
OK, this is in the Forgotten Realms setting, in Faerun.

If you don't know what that is, all you need to know for right now is that it's High Fantasy Medieval Europe.

We have one character so far -- a Tiefling Rogue. Given the changes that I am making to healing, it would probably be a good idea for one of the characters to have magical healing of some sort.

I'm using the bog-standard by-the-book system for making characters, using the variant where you allocate 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8 to your stats.

Drow PCs are not allowed for reasons internal to this campaign, or PCs from the Underdark.

(if you don't know what that is, that's the continent-spanning cave system where the drow live.)

Got it?

I've never played a healer, so I'll be a Cleric.  Let's see how that goes. ;-)

Have read quite a few Forgotten Realms novel back in the day. :)

Are the stats not kinda low? And what's the starting level?

Is there a good character generation page?

Good, then you know. :)

Nah, it's a 3-18 bell curve, with 11 being the average. So you have one low stat, a couple of average stats, and the others above average. Plus, this is before racial modifiers, and in 5e stats can increase through time.

First level.

I don't know if there is a good chargen page. If you want, I can just walk you through the process over facebook. It should take 15 minutes

Here's a decent vid walking through the process.

Some of the modifiers, etc. may change depending on your race, class, and such, but the idea is the same.

Hi everyone, nice to be getting started.

I found that the 8-15 made my character a little stronger than I made her tbh.
I went in fairly low originally due to the style we are going to be playing but its worked out better.

Chris - Ill get the updated sheet to you ASAP. The back room has been turned into a temp office for my wife and daughter who are both working from home because of this covid19 thing. I will also look again about that equipment list.

OK, any character ideas?

We have a Tiefling Rogue thus far.

Re: OOC discussion
I'm thinking Ranger or Cleric - someone who can heal.
Working today, but trying to fit in some "research" time too.

Open to any ideas, though.

Other than a healer, is there anything specific we need for the party?

Well, we just have the Rogue so far. Any party needs someone that can hit stuff hard, so you can't go wrong with that. :)

Think about High Fantasy versions of Lovecraft or horror tropes, perhaps? There is a Great Old One Warlock variant... Ranger monster hunter. Things like that.

Just riffing on horror character tropes here...

Student of Things Man Was Not Meant to Know (variant: mad scientist)
Exorcist/demonologist

etc.

We know have a Wood Elf Fighter, meaning that a ranger might be redundant?

Assuming you want the stereotypical forest ranger. You could be a dwarf roamer of the mountains or something instead.
