Respite in Dunnold

You stand in the streets of Dunnold, tired, bandaged, filthy, and weighed down with treasure.

Respite in Dunnold

"I know we are all tired, but we may want to get rid of some of this stuff before we get a place to stay," Odhran said.  "Crunge's General Store may buy some of the items, Tor might buy some of the weapons, and it may be best if some of you start with a visit to Larkspur the Leech."

"I agree," Melissa nods "Much as I'd love a glass of wine right now, we should probably fence the bulky, tracable items as soon as we can, then retire to a quiet tavern to split the spoils."

Re: Respite in Dunnold

Crunge bids you all a hearty hello and shakes each of your hands for having made it back to Dunnold in one piece, more or less. You show him the treasures you have found and he suggests taking them to Myla the Jeweler and Tovar's House of Finery to sell.

You make your way to Tovar's first to dispose of the heavier item.

Tovar's House of Finery is like a warehouse, packed with all manner of gold and silver items as well as carpets, intricate vases, and other fine sundries. You also note the presence of twelve heavily armed and armored guards.

Tovar inspects the items carefully. He frowns at the state of the gold and silver items from the exploding chest, but does find it hard to contain his admiration of the gold crown.

"I will pay 300 gold pieces for these items," he says pointing to the 14 items. "If only they had not been so roughly treated, they may have fetched more. For this crown, I offer...600 gold pieces."

Tovar motions to one of his guards who comes over with a small chest. Tovar counts out stacks of coins. Soon 900 gold pieces sit on the table, glinting, before you.

Tovar looks at you, expectantly, waiting for an answer.

Melissa casually flies over and alights on the crown, standing on its points.
"Oh come now Tovar, I don't begrudge a man making an honest profit, but we both know this crown is worth easliy twice that, even before you count it's provenance as an antique from the Wizard Fortress. Even melted down it's worth more than you're offering." She snaps her fingers and a tiny flame appears just above her hand, she looks thoughtfully at the crown for a moment before shrugging and blowing the flame out. "I won't argue your price on the other items, but you'll have to do better for the crown." She smiles pleasantly.

"Well," Melissa says slowly "The crown must be of great value for it was well guarded. To reach it we passed through a room containing naught but skeletons, then we bargained with a demon to secure passage, and we fought off the reanimated corpses of the last adventurers who failed to claim it, and then as a final challenge before we could claim the crown we faced a fearsome Orc cheiftain and his band; who pressed us hard but we prevailed. We only return now as our pockets are full but our bellies are empty."

The Wizards Guild

The Wizard's Guild is not hard to find, you simply follow the pull of magic. Dunnold's Guild is a small squat tower that stands alone in a large square occupied by well-maintained gardens.

A sign written in the common tongue plainly states that only wizards are permitted to enter the square.

Upon entering the tower you are greeted by one of the Guild Masters.

"We had heard that a new band of adventurers had returned from an expedition to the Fortress. Not all that venture there return. I have heard tales of the horrors that haunt that cursed place. But, I trust that you are here to learn and not to chat?"

Larkspur the Leech

Larkspur's office is a small wooden building. You enter the waiting room and see an older, balding human male wearing spectacles talking to a middle-age human female seated behind a desk. They both look up as you enter.

"Welcome,"
the man says. "I am Larkspur. I can see that your are definitely in need of my services," he says looking you over. "I can tend to your wounds if you wish and speed their healing or I provide you will medicines to dull the pain and fight off bad humors. My prices vary with the severity of the ailment. I do ask for payment in advance."

The rest of the room contains a empty bench along the wall to your right, a cabinet full of bottle and jars along the wall to your left, and a door in the wall to your left. It is labeled "Examination Room".

Slattery hands over 10 gp and is taken back into the examination room where Larkspur stitches Slattery's worst cuts, applies a thick yellow ointment to all of them and then dresses his wounds in clean bandages. Larkspur then gives Slattery two glass vials containing several white pills.

"Take one of each of these every four hours between today and tomorrow. Go ahead and start now."

Slattery feels much better already, and leaves the exam room relatively free of pain.

OOC: Slattery regains 3 CON immediately. He'll regain 2 CON every 4 hours. He'll be back at full CON in 2 days, unless something occurs before you head back to the ruins. I deducted 10 gp from the totals in the Experience and Treasure thread.

After seeing to his many injuries, Slattery makes his way to the Grey Minstrel Inn. The first floor of the inn has a kitchen and a bar as well as a dining area and places to sit in front of a large fire. Slattery feels quite relaxed as soon as he enters.

"Welcome, welcome," a tall, slender man with long silver hair says approaching Slattery. "I am Wulfrid, owner of the Grey Minstrel. Are you seeking a meal, or perhaps lodging for the night or longer? From your bandages I see you have paid Larkspur a visit. A strange man he is, but quite skilled at his profession."

"I can offer you a private room for 5 gold per night or a spot in the common room on the second floor for 5 silver per night. Both include a meal. The private room offers a bit more security, of course."

"For now you may just wish to enjoy a drink and sit by the fire?"

Slattery glances over at the fire and sees a young man sitting in chair. His equipment and manner suggest that he may be a fortune seeker like himself.

Conscious of the remnants from his cheap meal he slid a plank of breadcrumbs under his chair with his foot and offered a slightly embarrassed smile. He eyed the bandages curiously.

"For months there's been no question in my mind. Adventuring is the only real means by which I can bring about any wealth of substance in this life time." the young warrior spoke excitedly to his willing audience "It took moons to reach Dunnold, finally catching a caravan up from the south with one of Korbo's outfits. They told tales of many venturing forth from here, calling it the gateway to the Blasted Lands." after a deep breath and a throat clearing Fetch refocused himself, "Sir, there is a lady beyond my station in life that has my heart. It's as much of a want as it is a need. Truth be told I am a capable fighter but a man of very little means, for now at least, and I've balanced the risks in my mind." appearing relieved by his most concise delivery yet, he paused momentarily before admitting "I overstayed my welcome at the Houndshead so I made my way here further seeking employ. Did you say orc?" not realizing he'd worked his way to the edge of his seat, Fetch keenly awaited the man's response.

Fetch's eyes lit up and his posture straightened bolt-upright "I would be in your service, humbly asking a fair share as return." then he relaxed, just a bit, for the first time since entering town. "Do tell of your employers, are they seasoned mercenaries? Veteran knights? In what numbers??" he asked, diligently gathering information before facing any initiation, trials or whatever protocols an established and successful adventuring company must surely have.

In reply to Slattery (msg # 50):

"Hmmm. I've never much stood on formality and I too dream of a day when I won't have to return for a further venture." Fetch absent-mindedly tapped a finger on an empty wooden water mug beside his chair, drifting into his thoughts and staring into the fire.

He snapped back to the conversation at hand, "I greatly look forward to their meeting, but first more water." Fetch stood holding the mug, tipped it sideways to signal its emptiness, and smiled thinking of taking his leave to head for the bar and a refill.

Thea Schreiber:
"Greetings.  I am looking to see what sort of magical staves you have for purchase."  After a pause, she adds, "I also find myself curious about the other items you have for sale... even if any other purchases might have to wait for another day."

"Ah yes, a wizard is always in need of a good staff. We have a standard magic staff for 100 gold pieces or a deluxe magic staff for 5000 gold pieces. One must be careful of the deluxe staff, of course, lest it take control of you."

"We have a variety of other items that may interest you. We have potions that duplicate the effects of many spells to heal injuries, cure sickness, see in darkness, become stronger or taller for a time, and so on. We also have scrolls from which to cast spells from, though they are warded so that you cannot actually learn the spell; Guild requirements. There are also wands from which you cast a limited number of  spells, though these are quite expensive."

OOC: Potions cost 200 gp per spell level. For example you could get a potion that duplicates the effects of Healing Feeling or Shield Me for 600 gp. Many spells cannot be duplicated by potions (TTYF, Whammy, Rock-a-bye, Blasting power, etc.).

Scrolls cost 350 gp per spell level. These can be any spell, but you cannot learn spells from these scrolls.

Wands or other items may be infused with different spells. For example, a wand from which you can cast Blasting Power five times (no WIZ cost) or a sword enchanted with Vorpal Blade. These will be quite expensive.

Let me know what you're looking for and I'll let you know if it's available and a price.

Somewhat emboldened by Slattery beginning a tab and intending to remain at the fireside, Fetch gave a sidelong glance to him while pulling over a small wooden footstool. "Might as well enjoy the fire." Then followed up with a question for his new acquaintance as he made himself comfortable and settled into the deep highbacked chair, "Would you tell of your companions?" the youngster asked as he peered out intently over his refreshed cup "I'd very much like to know of them."

Re: Respite in Dunnold

You spend the next two days resting and recovering at the Grey Minstrel Inn.

A visit to Myla the Jeweler nets you 100 gp from the emerald you recovered from the rock grub and a total of 500 gp from the 15 gemstones from the chest.

This leaves you with a total 1832 gp and 1010 sp (minus Slattery's healing and the Poor Baby spell).

Melissa, Odhran, Thea, and Slattery spend hours locked in their private rooms trying to teach each other their newfound magic. Careful watch is kept for agents of the Wizard's Guild.

You also spend time visiting the various merchants of Dunnold in search of better weapons and armor and new equipment.

OOC: A few points:

1) Let me know if you plan to purchase any more spells from the Wizard's Guild.

2) If using Teacher, indicate who is teaching what to whom and the student should make the appropriate Saving Rolls on IQ. Remember that each character can learn two new spells per day.

3) Let me know of any other purchases that are being made. Refer to the House Rules thread for prices on weapons, armor, and equipment. If there is something not on the list you'd like, let me know.

One thing Melissa wants to do in town is visit an Apothecary and find out about the poison used on the needle fragment she salvaged, ie how deadly is it from a single pinprick, and how much does a small vial of it and some three inch needles cost?

Slattery fails to learn TTYF from Thea (4 AP). He can try again from both Odhran and Melissa, but remember he can only try to learn a spell twice per day.

Melissa visits Larkspur the Leech to learn about the poison on the needle. He tells her that is spider venom which can cause paralysis or at least slowed reflexes. He has something similar that he could sell her for 100 gp. This would be enough to apply to 20 darts.

Odhran succeeds in learning Poor Baby (20 AP) from Melissa.

Re: Respite in Dunnold

GM:
Melissa fails to get the knack of it (12 AP). She still has a chance to learn it from Odhran now, however.

Even with Odhran's patient explanations, Melissa still fails to master the spell.

16:42, Today: Melissa rolled 6 with the Tunnels & Trolls, Saving Throws system.
The random die roller really doesnt like me.

Thea Schreiber:
The next day, Thea makes her way over to the Red Earth Leatherworks on the edge of town.  While there, she will get fitted for a suit of leather armor, as well as a pair of calf-high boots.

"Nice armour, toots." Melissa comments as Thea returns in her new outfit. "So, are we ready to go yet?"

OOC Melissa is rather aware of the deal they sort of made with a demon and doesnt want to lounge around :)

"It looks like we have rations, shiny new equipment, and new spells," Odhran said.  "Looks like it is time to head back."

OOC: Did we decide on two-weeks of rations?  I don't remember.

OOC: Thea never did try to lern Poor Baby from Odhran.  Let's remedy that.

19:38, Today: Thea Schreiber rolled 8 with the Tunnels & Trolls, Saving Throws system.  Trying to learn Poor Baby from Odhran.

OOC: Closer, but no magical cigar.

Re: Respite in Dunnold

Thea purchases a suit of leather armor and calf high boots (55 gp total), and feels much safer. Delving in just ones robes is risky business.

Melissa sits with Odhran who tries to teach her Omnipotent Eye, but the spell is sadly just too complex for her (12 AP).

Next, Thea attempts to learn Poor Baby from Odhran, but once again cannot grasp it (16 AP).

OOC: This is why the Guild can charge so much for spells.

Jaxik is overjoyed to see Thea once again and eagerly accepts her coin to teach her Glue You.

OOC: Thea now knows Glue You. I've deducted 500 gp from the party funds. 778 gp remains.

Once done, Thea gives her thanks to Jaxik, and after grabbing a bite to eat, returns to their room at the inn.  She will as the day progresses, she will schedule time with Odhran and Melissa to teach each of them the spell she had just learned.

Re: Respite in Dunnold

Predictably, Melissa fails completely to learn the spell from Thea.

OOC 17:14, Today: Melissa rolled 7 with the Tunnels & Trolls, Saving Throws system.  Learning GlueYou.

If we're spending an extra day or two with Thea learning spell and attempting to teach us, does that mean Slattery gets another go to attempt to learn TTYF from us?

Confident after his success with Vorpal Blade, Slattery tries to learn the more complex Oh There It Is.

17:23, Today: Slattery rolled 19 with the Tunnels & Trolls, Saving Throws system.  Learn Oh There It Is (IQ 12).

Surprisingly, that worked.

Slattery buckles down and manages to learn Vorpal Blade and Oh There It Is (28 AP total).

You all visit Crunge's General Store and procure provisions and equipment for your next expedition including 7 days provisions per person, 10 torches, and 2 flasks of lantern oil. You pay Crunge 56 gp for these supplies.

OOC: Character sheets have been updated. I spread out the torches and oil among different characters. Please review you sheets and let me know if anything needs updating. I'll assume the remainder of the group funds goes into the Bank of Dunnold.

Re: Respite in Dunnold

Melissa climbs groggily from her hammock high in the rafters, shakes her wings out and flies labouriously down to the dresser in the room she shares with Thea. Of the previous night all she can remember is someone betting her she couldnt drink her own weight in mead. It feels like she won the bet.
She breifly considers waking the other woman but decides against it. Humans can be so damn loud.
Instead she climbs on the edge of the washing bowl, takes off her clothes and belly flops into the cold water.
Emerging a few minutes later, her senses restored and hangover much reduced she magics a candle into life and dries herself in its weak heat.

"I think," she says as Thea wakes up "We'd better head back to the dungeon before we drink all our money away. Or at least I do."
