I appreciate your support, everyone. As I said, I'll stick with the game, hopefully for the long term. I am, at least, backed up by a pretty stellar mod.
Ati:
Did you have another system in mind?
If it were up to me, I'd likely go with BECMI or one of its more modernized clones - still basically compatible with the existing campaign, but much more familiar to me and easier to run. I picked OSRIC pretty much solely because it was what Arden Vul was originally written for.
Sil'qian Nightwind:
I absolutely understand concerns with 1E/OSRIC. While I started with 1E back in 1979 and stuck with it for absolutely years, it is really a mess! I don't know anyone back in the day that played without a bunch of house rules to make it run smoother.
My problem there is that I'm not sufficiently knowledgeable about the rules to be comfortable modifying them.
Sil'qian Nightwind:
In all honesty, I had not really noticed that your posting had slowed down appreciably!
I think this is probably more of a reflection that "slow" is my normal rate, unfortunately. :v
Sil'qian Nightwind:
In the meantime, remember that your health and mindset is far more important than a game.
Oh, believe me, I never forget it. Real life comes before gaming, always.
Lenny:
I was wondering the same thing, not necessarily another system, but there may be some 1E mechanics we may just choose to dispense with entirely. Which ones have been proving to be onerous as far as running the game?
The one thing that seems to cause me more trouble than any other is tracking time, though that's not a problem specific to OSRIC. Luckily, it's almost entirely behind the curtain, and when I forget about it it's generally in your favor. (This is why the rate at which you use up torches has been so inconsistent - I often forget to track time, and even when I do I tend to forget about torches.)
Really, it's not any one thing I can point to. It's that the rules have a
lot of fiddly bits, and when I overlook even some of the obvious ones, you can see how much I can miss. I'm the type who's most comfortable when he has a firm grasp of the rules (I am very definitely my RL group's biggest rules lawyer), and OSRIC denies me that. It's not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but it's a source of personal stress when I run.

Nearly 50 hours a week is a lot. I only work a fairly soft 35.
I'm an oddball who actually loves his retail job, but even with a good union we still tend to get treated like dirt. :/
