House Rules

How This Game is Different
This is a game of deadly dungeon crawling. You will almost certainly lose characters along the way. Backstory is a nice-to-have. Roleplay is secondary to the action and adventure, especially in early stages where your 0-level heroes are getting mowed down rather unscrupulously. Keep this spirit in mind as we play; nobody will be penalized for succinct posts in this game.

Later on, you can put as much or as little work into the backstory of your surviving adventures. The world is pretty free-form in background, so we can make up details as we go along. The backstory and world-building is really just a bonus in this game.

The Inverse Golden Roll Rule
When in doubt, roll. This is the polar opposite of many of my games, so it's worth calling out. If you think a roll is warranted, roll. It will save time.

Metagaming is Okay--Mostly
I will not penalize players for metagaming knowledge about monsters or some lore in the game. We can assume your character heard from their retired adventurer aunt or something like that. However, the GM reserves the right to delete text from any player's post that gives away a bit too much.

Posting standards:
  • Try to keep metagame conversation not directly related to the scene unfolding in the OOC thread. If you don't, I may move your OOC comments there for you.
  • When I ask you for a roll, ALWAYS copy the result from the dice roller here into the IC thread. Put that and any other mechanical detail in orange text after the in-character text in the IC thread. Do not put them in "spoiler" mode or in a private post. You can make them smaller text if it makes you feel better, but don't hide or obscure them.
  • It is okay if your post is just a copied dice roll. Pace of posting is more important than aesthetics in this context.
  • No rules arguments in the open forum. if someone does something wrong, send them a PM. If I do something wrong, absolutely do send me a PM.  If someone (me or someone else) does something you don't agree with, send a PM.
  • I will remind people to post sometimes via PM. This is to help the game keep moving and not a personal reflection on you. Giving me attitude about this or failing to respond/post are bad.
  • If you cast a spell, ALWAYS post WHAT THE SPELL DOES and make any related rolls (damage, particularly) and include in your post.

PMing Players to Keep the Game Moving

It is a common practice of this GM to nudge players with PMs periodically. Nobody should feel singled out when this happens. The GM uses PMs to nudge players along equally. It does NOT mean you did anything wrong. It does mean the GM is trying to keep the pace of the game moving.

Drawing Weapons
Characters who drop a ranged weapon can drop their ranged weapon, draw their melee weapon and attack the same round if they don't have to move.

Luck Checks
There is a variant rule floating around the DCC universe where a "Luck check" is a roll of an unmodified d20 where success is a roll equal to or under your Luck score, and a roll of higher than your Luck score is a fail. This is only found in the book on page 361 in the GM rules on Luck.

We are using that variant here under the following circumstances: When there is a DC listed in the book for a "Luck check," roll d20 and add/subtract your Luck modifier from the roll and see if you beat the DC. If there is NOT a DC listed (e.g. pages 93, 287), then you roll an unmodified d20 and succeed if your roll is equal to or less than your Luck score.

Luck and Recovering the Body
The all-important "turn the body over" Luck check has no DC, so when you roll it, roll an unmodified d20. If you roll equal to or less than your Luck score, the PC survives as described. If you roll higher, that PC goes on to the happy hunting grounds.

More rules will be added to this space as we go along.
