Welcome everyone to the game, I may add one more just in case, but I think for the 4 players I have accepted it makes sense.

Aergleel Greenleaf - Blade of the Elves (Fighter//Cleric of Corellon)
Amardes Leithianeth - Fist of the Forest (Monk//Druid)
Casyr - Knight of the Wild (Paladin//Ranger)
Ruven Reykalyn - Song of the Eladrin (Bard//to be determined)

I know Amardes is going to be focused on his Martial Arts, and Casyr said he was going the Archery route.

I made the assumption that Aergleel is going to be a Sword swinger, and Ruven...will be something, but two melee and one ranged isn't a bad fit.

Amardes is an Elven maiden. In human terms in her late teens, in 'years' for elves I think that's about a hundred years old. She's been 'home tutored' by her parents who live in the forest near the village as 'hunter/gatherers' and also as Charcoal burners.

I'll do her description/character sheet over the next couple of days. I assume we've all spent tens of years (at least) living in the same village so we should know each other fairly well.

As I flesh out the town, notably NPCs, you may notice I have altered things slightly. As we develop this town I would like for people to become invested in it and it's inhabitants.

You are all currently residents or near residents of the town, and so would have grown up together for the most part.

Now, I was assuming we would be playing with the traditional Elf races ala PHB. Instead of a con penalty, I am ruling Elves get a solid +2 Dexterity bonus instead. No penalty to your racial stats.

Oh that's very nice :), I need to go change my CON then :).

I've grown up in town, my father is a hunter (Ranger), and my mother is a herbalist (She could be an expert or something more). They've been preparing me for the future raids against the village, specifically Orcs, which raided the village sometime in their youth and they were involved in helping in defense (as was most of the village).

I am a follower of Vandria Gilmadrith, and thus more stoic than the typical elf, almost dwarf like. I am a Paladin/Ranger, and I noticed the Captain of the Guard is too :).

Firstly: thanks for the +2 con :) I like my hitpoints. Especially at level 1! The bonus 20 are extremely welcome too. I like the idea of being level one from the point of view of spells/attack/damage etc while not being one shotted by a lucky kobold.

Secondly: how many feats can we have at level 1. Are you using any disadvantage rules, or is it a straight '1' + any class modifiers?

And Hi Casyr. Good to meet you

Only 1, as an elf normally would. If you have a class that gives you an additional one, ala fighter, you get that bonus feat as well. The goal with feats was to allow you not to worry so much about having to take this feat and that feat to be optimized, but giving you a chance to take feats that have more flavor, such as the feats from Complete Arcane that give you a few spell like abilities per day, etc...

And yes, Casyr, while your father has been giving you training on the side, you have been apprenticing yourself to the Captain of the Watch over the years. She shares your class archetype because it makes sense.

Hopefully Ruven Reykalyn doubles as a wizard.

My first draft of character sheet is up. I haven't done anything with equipment yet: I'll sort that out if you are happy with the rest of it.

A thought for us: if we actually get levels, we could consider getting 'team work feats' representing the fact that we train and work together.

Sorry Amardes I'm going bard/favored soul for my spellcasting, with some spell like abilities thrown in. I definitely plan on being more of a caster and throwing out buff/debuff spells while inspiring you all from the back lines. I'll probably have a bow backup weapon though.

So I was looking at adding one last player, and here is the list of applicants:

Centaur Centaur//Sorcerer - Maybe War Mage
Elf Scout//Barbarian
Wild Elf Totemist//Sorcerer
Elf Rogue//Illusionist
Forest Gnome Druid//Incarnate

And I was thinking that having bonus skill points isn't anything to sneeze at, how would you feel if we allows both classes skill points added together to determine your total? So a Wizard//Sorcerer would get 4+int modifier, Ranger//Paladin would get 8+int modifier, etc... I just feel like there isn't ever enough points and too many skills.

So the Centaur, Elf Rogue/Illusionist (I almost was going to do this probably a follower of Alobal Lorforil), or Wild Elf Totemist/Sorcerer would be in the running.

I do have a concern on the Centaur though don't they have 4 HD as a centaur and thus wouldn't that make them to strong for staring out in this campaign.

I think I vote for Rogue/Illusionist (though I wonder what their barred schools are)

True, an advantage of playing a skilled caster.

I am potentially leaning towards the Centaur, just because he integrated his background well. He would be using the Racial levels in Races of the Wild to be equivalent power wise. So no secondary class until 7th level (Racial classes until then).

Okay if you think he's a better fit that's fine :)

Guess I'll stay Fighter||Cleric then if we're adding a sorcerer.

Can I suggest for skill points you do something like +2 on the normal amount? Or +4.

While I like the 'elves only' theme, it could be interesting to see how a centaur works out.

The Elf illusionist would have Enchantment and Necromancy as banned spells.

Ruven, a few changes to your character regarding spells known and you should be good.

Amardes, you have 4 more skill points you can spend. Otherwise you look good.

Aergleel, Corellons favored weapon is Longsword, so you should have Weapon Focus (Longsword) for your Domain bonus feat there. You are also not proficient with Elven Weapons (Thinblade, Lightblade, or Courtblade). Combat Casting is not a Fighter Feat. You also have 7 more skill points you can spend. Spells Known/Prepared needs to be finished. You haven't placed your +2 to Dex in yet either.

Shanaera, You do not have a Con penalty in this game, I do realize you are working on your character still, that is just something I noticed so far.

When it comes to spells known, please make sure you ask if you draw from anything besides the PHB. I am more likely to say yes if it is from one of my books, and highly unlikely for me to say yes if it comes from a book or source I do not.

And our last addition, I guess you would call him a blaster.

As the GM said 'he's more likely to say yes if he has the book' and he didn't list the book in his collection. There are some utterly uber spells in there that I would really like to have as this character. That's because they are a lot more powerful than the basic spells in the D20 SRD..

I'm all for this by the way. Basically (and hurrah for this) we all know SPLAT books can (if not controlled) cause massive power escalation. By doing this we have control over that power escalation.

We shall see if it gets boring. I am giving Kor and Shanaera a day to get their character up. I might open up a thread to get us started soon-ish, even if the sheets are not done yet.

I know there are great spells in there, trust me, I cannot tell you how many times I have had to remove characters for refusing to ask about a specific spell and they throw a tantrum because it "ruins" their character build. I don't own the book, and I do own quite a few resources to draw from. If it is listed in the Compendium and another splat book in which I do own, go ahead and ask. I have access to it so I can let you know.

Overall, I think this will be a varied and interesting group. A heavy on the divine casting, but not such a bad thing, especially considering that we will have three different arcane casting types.

Hello all! Names Kor, and I am thinking of my character as an elementalist type of character, kind of like a Bender. I am not sure what I am going to take after Centaur, but I think Kor will be good until then.

Yeah on average RPOL rates, 7 or 8 levels is around 10 years, so you are good for a while.

I'm looking forwards to seeing how a centaur works out.

Well, until we are 6th level, I am a Medium(Long) sized character, so no difference in weapon damage.

I was saved as a young foal by Xialo when my tribe was slaughtered during an orcish invasion into this forest about forty years ago. Xialo took me under his wing and trained me to focus my anger into elemental energy. Although Xialo tried to also teach Kor how to channel nature like a druid, Kor instead found himself focusing on his own heritage alongside the elemental energy he learned to tap.

I am thinking perhaps asking to go Cleric Obad-Hai (Earth and Air) and then Contemplative (Water and Fire) later on, going as the elemental embodiment of the god of nature and the elements.

As long as your paperwork was totally in order, and you had a legitimate reason to travel (which is a very very small list) then it's ok. I didn't have the legitimate reason (real reason was close family member needing help urgently) so we had to say 'returning to our permanent residance'. Awkwards since I don't have one at the moment (I live in airbnb)

How old is she?

She's 95 almost 96 if she makes it another month but she's pretty bad I just hope she lasts til my uncle gets here, I don't suspect she'll make it out of this week, but she has surprised us all before. It is not COVID-19 related, we've been in isolation this entire time.

My she has had a long and fruitful life! My grandma passed when she was 89, right before she turned 90. Celebrate with her and enjoy her while you have her. God bless.

I am sorry to hear that as well. I assume she is on home hospice care then? I hope she makes it long enough for your Uncle to see her, I lost my grandmother 24 years ago when I was in middle school.

And I agree with you Aergleel, siblings can be...interesting. I rarely speak to any of mine, despite being on Facebook, Messenger, etc... We just are not as close as we were when we were children. I guess it is the fact we live so far apart (NE, SE, SW, and West Coast) that makes it hard to stay connected. I do not know your family well, but perhaps just trying to get in contact with them via Google Search? That has helped my wife with some of her high school friends (20+ years ago), not perfect, but sometimes it works out.

She's at home so far no hospice with much of the household vulnerable my aunt is worried about to many people coming in.

All the knowledge skills are "trained skills" which require you to have a rank before you can use them. So you are correct that Knowledge: Geography requires ranks.

Well, yes I have school, but the lack of update was due to a trip to the hospital. Thankfully not corona, but a serious enough flu that I was incapacitated for a week.

Although I am not as strong as I used to be, I intend to continue this game shortly.

Yeah it sucks when a player just vanishes from a game. Unfortunately it happens way too often in pbp games. It's actually impressive that almost 3 months into the game we still have 5 of the original 6 players.

I agree it is hard to keep players.  Are you going to look for a replacement elf for us?

My 'rule of thumb' is in the first three months 40% of people will leave. And that after that it stays quite stable for a while.

I like the way you tied it into the story!

I was debating on replacing him or not, since you guys are doing very well at current capacity. I didn't hear back from him after my little medical break, so I am waiting to see if he has just been out sick or what, given all that is currently going on in the world, I do not hold it against someone if they are unable to post. I did save his character just in case.

Rolling twice and taking the best roll on Attack Rolls, Saves, and Skill checks help to keep a party alive and makes it feel like your character is doing something that is contributing to the game, I think that is a big issue with some games on RPOL that you are waiting for days for a round to finish, and if you roll badly, it can be off-putting if your warrior isn't hitting the broad side of a barn on a good day, your cleric isn't make that simple will save to resist a compulsion, and your very knowledgeable loremaster knows only rudimentary information about anything. Hmmm, now that I think about it, a Gnome Bard with the Trivial Knowledge feat....hmmmm 3d20 and drop the lowest two...

I had a player join a game I am running. I know them well. They rolled 1,1 on their first two rolls, and they just didn't enjoy the game. If they'd rolled 20,20 on their first two rolls they would have had a totally different experience

The tool I use is 'hero points' (not d20/pathfinder). I give them out often, and with them you can do a re-roll (and add actually), but you only have so many. I do encourage people to use them because they add a lot to the heroic feel of the game.

The approach you take is a different approach, and it has a similar feel. Luck is actually less under the control of the player (you can - and I have - roll 2 and 2 on your die) but it feels like a resource the players have to consume. It is also unluck less often

And yes... your idea for that feat is the right sort of approach... rather than roll 2 die, take the best, roll 2 die take the best, and then take the best out of all four die

The Cold damage and Fortitude saves are every minute, but I am not currently advancing time until we get everyone posts in order.

Everyone make a DC 15 Climb check to descend the silk rope, you get the +2 from Shanaera's climbing kit.

That's correct. Think of it this way: Is your character always aware of their experience, how much each battle gives them, how much they earn by disarming a trap, avoiding a battle, etc...? I have a more fluid system of leveling, which hopefully allows for a decent pace of character growth. You have overcome a combat encounter, avoided conflict with a potential deadly situation, and survived a natural hazard/trap. For first level, not too bad. The battle ahead will be sure to challenge you further.

Well, Ruven and Shanaera your characters are both good, Casyr as well, but Aergleel needs to update his character.

I think it's safe to say Amardes is out at this point. I'm neutral to new characters. Having more players is rarely a bad thing as long as you think there is a reasonable way to work them into the story. However since we're gestalt we've probably still got most of the roles covered if you'd rather just keep moving on.

Well, Shanaera has requested to leave due to RL issues, and I promised to hold on to her character should she wish to return at some point.

I do have another player in the line up going for Wild Elf Barbarian // Ranger who is planning on taking over for Kor's character slot.

I also have a RTJ that might be interesting for the group, a Kenku Spellthief // Monk who could take over as the trapfinding element for the party.

Just a reminder, you guys following the earthen trail down this side ravine towards the cave, Kor might be alive within.

That is unfortunate, well hopefully she can rejoin the game at a later date. Are they going to take over the existing characters until we get back to town similar to the way we handled Amardes?

I was planning on playing them perhaps until the characters can be introduced.

Sorry that took longer than I expected, but we went with a Dell for about $1400 with shipping et al. 16g ram, not a bad solid state hard drive, and a 1060 graphics card. (I can actually run Mass Effect Andromeda on this one, can't wait to see how it handles X-COM 2). It should be a day or so for me to catch up with my games, and we can see where we are at. I am looking forward to seeing how we finish this arch, so as a thank you for waiting and sticking around...

Those within 10' of Casyr now have a +4 morale bonus vs enchantment spells and spell like abilities :) (rather than fear)

Ruven should now be updated. I can now 'inspire competence' which is cool. Beyond that it was mostly just some extra spells.
