In reply to Dungeon Master (msg # 39):

Lol, that "encyclopedic knowledge" is only because I do have rule lawyers in my game, I learned a bit from them ;-)... that and over 30 years of gaming

I'm the games I GM, I'm more of a story teller that uses the rules as a framework to have a consistent base

I have found that having a rules lawyer in a group is actually a boon, as they tend to remember things I would have to look up, unless they're that kind that makes you want to punch them in the face.

No armour for wizards if they want to cast spells!

That is a relic from 3, 3.5, wizards can wear armor in 5e as long as they are proficient in it and still cast spells, look at the blade singer, or a dwarf wizard, one of the sub races starts with light and medium armor proficiency.

If you want to be accurate, it is a relic from Original D&D:
D&D Volume 1 Men & Magic, p.6:
The whole plethora of enchanted items lies at the magic-users beck and call, save the arms and armor of the fighters

And while it is possible for some wizards in 5E to wear armour, Korym is neither a dwarf, nor a bladesinger and at level 3 he has not even qualified to take a feat.

In reply to Korym Nightstar (msg # 43):

I bow to your superior d&d knowledge ;-)

I actually hated d&d's magic system before 4e and it's at will spells, so every previous version is vague for me. I did acquire a book on the history and tribulations of the business side of TSR and D&D but haven't read it yet.

I am going to wait a bit longer for Einar to post if he wants.

But, just so I am clear, Korym is following shadow down the stairs the cultists came from to look around?

I don't think my knowledge is superior, I am just old and pedantic! :-)

The old "Vancian" memorise/cast/forget system was OK at high levels when the caster had a pile of spells to use. But at low levels it was really boring. "I cast Sleep", then the rest of the adventuring day is "I throw dagger/dart".

Lots of grognards try to paint it as "This is the way", but the the truth is, we were all coming up with house rules to give the mage more options. As a player, I always played multi-class, so I could cast my one spell, and then at least still be useful!

With the huge swing in popularity the last few years, there have been a lot of books and documentaries about the history of D&D. Unfortunately, there seems to be the ones that favour Arneson and slag Gygax; and the ones that do the opposite.

I have read a few, but the ones that I trust are by Jon Peterson. Playing with the World is a huge slog, it is very textbook-like and very long. Game Wizards is much more readable, and much shorter. He relies on documents as opposed to just talking to people, which is to remove bias as best he can.

Yes. Although when you ask it makes me realise this is not a good idea!

Korym will move just to the bottom of the stairs, not into the room/cave.

Okay, so Hope is going to dress up and head down into the next room, Korym is going to go down but stay just out of sight in the stairwell, so what about Oraphina and Einar, you headed down too? You going to want Grune to go down as well with his disadvantage to stealth?

Oraphina could stealth somewhat near Hope, but she's not a rogue.

On another note, I'm in the crunch of the last days before my move, so I'll post only if I can, and expect shorts one, until I'm settled in my new place.

Einar just a clarification so I can get my post up, are you staying back in the room you are all in now, or staying toward the back of the group going down the stairs?

Also do you all want Grune to follow down the stairs?

Also, I will need everyone, except Hope, who is simply waltzing in, to make (DEX) Stealth checks.

I will roll for Oraphina; since they are moving and no need to bog them down with a roll.

Presuming that Korym is one of the waltzers!

Korym Nightstar rolled 14 using 1d20+2 for DEX(Stealth).

Okay well, since someone is moving and another is sick; I will slow down a bit to help them out and get my next post up Wednesday after work, so that this is one less thing to worry about.

Or if I need to hold up entirely for a bit, let me know.

Do we have any more healing available?

I still think we are best off to leave, but Korym will blast cantrips if the decision is made to stay.
