About This Game - Please Read

1. Why ‘Middle Amber’ instead of a post-Patternfall game?

Because I've always felt like there are a lot of very cool story possibilities in Classic Amber, Amber in Her Glory. There’s a big difference between an Amber with an immortal King of millenia and his scary, intimidating, beautiful, chaotic brood and an Amber with a new King after the Greatest War and everything broke wide-open. I like the latter, but wanted to try running something a wee bit different.

2. Sooo what’s the story? Do we ride for Chaos at dawn?

This is a sandbox game. I want you to play characters you love and enjoy reveling in this version of the world and to influence/create plot.

Yes, there are story hooks. Yes, there might be the occasional Big Thing Everybody Is Affected By, but ultimately where the story takes them is going to be up to your characters.

The emphasis is very much on character (a la the Corwin chronicles) and very much not on just collecting Cool Powers (a la the Merlin chronicles).

3. But are the canon NPCs more powerful than me?

Maybe? Probably? Oberon absolutely is. You're playing the rare member of the third generation and will, for the most part, be relatively new to your full inheritance or not have yet been Initiated by the Pattern (depending on concept).

That said, you are good at what you're good at, and nobody's always perfect. Amberites can fail, indeed, frequently they do fail. Can you take on Benedict in a sword fight? Prooobably not. But Eric or Bleys? Maybe? If luck's with you? Nobody's interesting if they never fail, and that includes NPCs.

4. What if my character doesn't succeed at something but that's what I wanted them to do?

I'd say figure out why they failed and try, IC, to figure out how to get a more favorable re-do.

Your characters are going to succeed, absolutely. But they're also going to fail. Nobody gets to be the untouchable badass or the effortlessly charming social butterfly automatically beloved by all without a challenge or three. Failure isn't the end of a story, it's a twist in a long tale.

5. Please play a responsive, reactive character--the world's here FOR you, not to be your enemy

You can absolutely play a stoic badass. But I still want to know that they react to things, and not just with annoyance or anger. Corwin reacted to things in his world. React. REACT! Live.
