Middle Rebma - Culture

Rebman historians from the future might refer to this period as ‘Late Middle Rebma,’ or even, possibly, the End of Rebma’s Silver Age (or the beginning of Rebma’s New Golden Age?).

For those familiar with the Zelazny books, this means that the events of this game occur long before the events of the Corwin books. There is no Martin (yet?). Oberon’s youngest has never visited Rebma. The two nations are currently enjoying friendlier relations than ever.

The following posts on this thread are about Rebman culture, things your character would likely know and/or you can use to build your character. If you’re interested in playing an ambassador to Rebma from somewhere else, let me know! You totally can. Player contributions re: Rebman culture will be found here as well. :)

Royal Family

Heads of State

Moire is Queen. She has been Queen for decades, but is still counted “new.” Under her leadershp, perhaps with input from her sister Llewella, Rebma is embarking on a new policy of thawed relations with Amber Above.

There is no King at this time.

She is called Your Exalted Majesty or Your Imperial Majesty.

Ris is the Queen’s Consort. He is also the presumed father of Morganthe. He left (read: stormed away from) Rebma around the time--for those doing the math--Moire conceived her second daughter. He returned some years later, and Moire once again elevated him.

He is called Exalted Lord or Prince Consort.

Children of Moire

*Morganthe is the Crown Princess, Moire's oldest daughter by Ris, Crique's half-sister. A happy-go-lucky but somewhat imperious young woman.

She is called Your Royal Highness or, by old-fashioned Rebmans, Your Exalt.

*Crique is Moire's youngest daughter, although her paternity is subject of quite a good deal of gossip (as long as Ris is nowhere in the vicinity, because Well and Fount help you if he hears). [PC]

She is called Your Highness.

Other Royal Children

* Ulysses is Moins' older brother. He is very old indeed. His mind wanders a great deal, but he likes to tell stories. In his youth he removed himself from the line of succession.

He is called Lord Prince, or my Lord.

*Llewella is Moire's half-sister by Oberon of Amber. A Princess. In Rebma, it is presumed she has some of the powers of Amber's royal family. Rebma's attitude to Llewella is one of us, not one of them. Most of the time. Her garden labyrinth is a wonder, and invitations to visit are much coveted. There are some who thought she should have been Queen and some who were afraid she'd try for it once Moins passed, but Llewella and Moire seem to be on the same page.

She is called Your Highness or, by old-fashioned Rebmans who wanted Llewella to be Queen rather than Moire, Your Exalt.

*Aumré is the queen's niece, Llewella's daughter by Namac, and a daughter of House Lír. [PC]

Royal by Association

*Rís of House Melúsedna, see above Heads of State.

*Namac Lír is Llewella's husband, a marriage acknowledged by Oberon of Amber as well as Moins Rebma before she passed. He is the queen's brother-in-law, and uncle-by-marriage to Morganthe and Crique. And he's also Lord Admiral of the Rebman Navy. Well-connected.

It's worth noting that Rebma always has very clear lines of succession. If ever there's no declaration, heir presumptive is oldest child of the main branch of the royal line. A declaration might go to a younger and/or more fit child, but tradition is usually with the oldest. Should the oldest child be deceased and have no offspring of their own, succession would go to the next unbroken branch. It's very rare (read: has not yet happened) that a Queen or King of Rebma has not publically declared their heir.

For those interested in court history. Moins declared Moire crown princess some time after Llewella's first visit to Amber.

The Court of Rebma

The Court of Rebma consists of

(a) Important Personages from Golden Circle kingdoms, visiting or "visiting" (fostered to Rebma by some callous politician looking to keep their worrisome rivals in line), including some shadow kingdoms from the Pearl Circle: submerged and mysterious, there are five of these, more on the Pearl Circle later. Although much-relaxed in the last couple decades, Rebma is quite strict about allowing too many outsiders in, so there is not quite the cosmopolitan diversity other courts value.

(b) members of Noble Houses native to Rebma. These are given the most precedence. A knight of Rebma trumps a baron of some lesser kingdom. Only dukes and princes (or the equivalent) from other shadows might feel a sense of equal-footing. One cannot become Head of a Noble House in Rebma without putting in service either to the Well, to the Navies of Rebma, or going on a quest set by Rebma's ruler. In this way, the seats of some noble Houses are empty come Court Council, though members still exist and are active in court. Many Court Offices are filled by these. Minor offices are given to Rebmans of lower rank.

(c) the very occasional elevated commoner or once-common sorcerer or very distinguished soldier. Rebma appreciates great heroism. These include the even more occasional lovers of royalty brought from elsewhere. Minor offices of the court filled by Rebmans not part of a Noble House.

Noble Houses of Rebma include, but are not limited to: Chatoyer, Lír, Melúsedna, Danube, Circe, Anguille, Requinoir, Scylla, Ophiucus

Martial Things

Castle Guard

There are about 40-50 members of the Castle Guard.

City Guard

There are about 400 members of the City Guard.

Faiella-Bionin Guard

There are 7 guards assigned duties at the stair.

Navy of Rebma

Ah, Rebma's navy. Rebma's navy is known Above the Waves for its cunning, its near-mythical ability to be in unexpected places, its speed and its strangeness. Rebma's navy is currently small: 18 ships, 2 of those being under repair, and about 1,500-1,700 sailors. At its largest, under Queen Moins, Rebma possessed (to hear Ulysses or other Old Timers tell it) at least 40 ships. Easy to find ship parts at the bottom of the ocean to make new ones. The Navy is currently headed by an Lord Admiral, with other key positions being Lieutenants of the Admiralty, Clerk Comptroller of the Navy, Surveyors and Riggers of the Navy (which must include a Well-Initiate), etc. Notable NPCs who have held or hold naval responsibilities are: Llewella, Ris, Aumré (PC), Namac. Morganthe is said to be petitioning her mother for permission.

Army of Rebma

Rebma does maintain a standing army, but it is very small.

Rangers of Nedra, the Kelp Forest, the Singing Depths, the Drowned Place:

Nedra is 35-40 miles outside Rebma, and it is a place of stark contrasts. There is a vast chasm which drops off suddenly into the unknown, although Things are said to occasionally come creeping up from out of the dark. There is also an active volcano, churning fire out into water.

The rangers of Nedra often also hold a position in Rebma's army, although not always. They make certain the beasties and monsters and myths of the great deeps do not break through Rebma's magic and come to trouble that enchanted kingdom. Extremely perilous for any outsider not of Rebma, or granted certain powers by Rebman sorcerers, to try and assay Nedra; if one doesn't drown, the pressure may take one. Native Rebmans may even find it gets difficult further out to breathe, the 'air' being very close.

General Etiquette

A smorgasbord of cultural observations in no particular order at present.

On Sexual Maturity, Love, and Marriage

Rebmans sexually mature later than other races of people and their reproductive cycles are completely internal so there are no messy issues in the waters. Whereas an Amberite female might start to show signs of sexual maturation at about age 11-12, a Rebman girl might not until about age 17-18. Not that they're still mental children, just that their bodies wait a bit longer in their growth cycle, giving them a tendency to be taller and more slender as a people. The average height of a Rebman female is about 5'9" and men come in at about 6'6".

Rebma is much more (openly, officially) accepting regarding sexual preferences. In their world, it's not unusual for there to be lesbian and gay couples, given that they subscribe to lovers being the fiercest warriors, however that may come about. When it comes to duty and family, obtaining a surrogate or finding a male to impregnate a woman is normal, accepted, and not considered adulterous. In noble families, where partners are of the same sex, it's not uncommon to find that their surrogate or stud becomes a highly valued member of the House.

In many ways, it is an opposite reflection of Amber. Marriage in Amber is considered a financial or political proposition and rife with extramarital affairs whereas, in Rebma, a couple is meant to be committed to one another. Therefore, things like arranged marriages are not a normal way of life, and even when one does come up, it takes a lot of negotiating to ensure that the couple in question is compatible so that their strength is multiplied rather than divided. The exception to this rule may tend to be those of the Royal House, but even there much latitude is given. Power is only power if one can use it to have what one wants, as the philosophers say.

That said, Rebmans do tend to look down / be rather cold (at least at first) to intermarriage with outsiders. Stud service is an entirely different matter.

Children

Children are taught not to swim in the house. It's considered rude.

Fashion

Minimal. Men usually bare their torsos. Women usually bare their breasts. Flowy garments are kept to special occasions when one wants the drama of the swirl.

We Are Not A Subordinate Realm

Rebma was first. Amber was second. Rebma does not see itself as a 'reflection' of the kingdom closest to them. Rebma has its own deep history, its own deep magics, and its own deeply complicated relationship with its neighbors. The power of Amber is, unfortunately (from the Rebman perspective), mighty... but only the sea is eternal.

State Religions

Believe what you want as long as you believe in the Mysteries. Traditionally the Royal House of Rebma is considered to be semi-divine; the Queen is the head of religious matters, the High Priestess, the Splendor of the Deep.

There is one chapel for the Church of the Unicorn, but it and its adherents are treated a little bit like Catholics in Elizabeth I's England, with just a smidge more tolerance. At least adherants of the Horn aren't like the Heretics.

There is an underground, heretical religion, Its Name Shall Not Be Spoken Here, and anybody discovered to be practicing it is summarily executed. If the heretic is unlucky, the execution is not in the heat of the moment, but after Moire has decided what should be the punishment.

Fauna

Rebma is an enchanted underwater city, so its animals are a strange mixture of those that (from an outsider's perspective) seem like a straight reflection of land animals - for instance:

Cattle. But blue! They aren't part-fish. They're just: cows. But blue, and sometimes green, and sometimes they're dumb and get lost up the Oisin river where they can't breathe and they drown, and their body floats fully out of the Rebma into Amber and gives rise to stories about fairy cattle.

But there are also those which might seem mythological elsewhere.

Hippocampus. A very, very rare beast, part horse, part fish. Most Rebmans have never seen one in person.

Wasserreh. Part-deer, part-fish, rather delicate in appearance, they're numerous in the kelp forests and may be tamed. It's recently become rather fashionable to try and tame one for riding, thanks in part to the young princess Crique's well-known fondness for her pet Wasserreh.

And there are the animals you might typically expect to see under the water.

Sting rays, dolphins, all manner of fish, eels, etcetera. There is also a flock of colorful parrots and another flock of shining gold birds nobody knows quite how they got into Rebma, but there they stay, 'flying' around and trying not to get eaten.

The Circle of Pearl - on Shadows connected (only) to Rebma via Permanent(ish) Shadow Pathways

There are five of these, with specific entrance and exit routes. Unless one is a descendant of Oberon, one cannot enter these kingdoms by another way or walk to any other theoretical underwater shadow. Of historical note, one of these Whale Roads (as shadow roads are named in Rebma) is named Finndo's Way. Seems like every few years somebody notes that the Way is more difficult than it was.

Rebma trades with and counts these kingdoms as allies. Most of the time.

Player contributions re: these five shadows are welcome.
