Elizabeth's closest friend, Carly, was waiting for her.  Carly was something of a computer geek, a little detached from the real world, and Elizabeth was probably her only friend in the real world.  (This, in turn, made Carly extremely loyal, which was sometimes useful.)

And right now, she was waving to Elizabeth, and then staring at the horns and tail.

"Hi, Carly," Elizabeth said, pretending nothing was wrong.

"Uh, hi," said Carly, looking Elizabeth over.  "So... is that cosplay?"

"No, they're real," Elizabeth said, waving her tail a bit.

"...Cool!" Carly said after a moment.  She reached out to poke at Elizabeth's tail.

"So how did that happen?"

"This might sound crazy, probably because it is. But I woke up like this and then my ancestor appeared in my mirror and said that I was the reincarnation of the Queen of Darkness or something like that," Elizabeth said.

"Woah," said Carly.  "...so does it come with a crown?  A castle?  An army?  Personal servants?  Vast wealth?"

"The horns, tail and supposedly powers, but I haven't tried testing anything out," Elizabeth said.

"You should!" said Carly.  "Can you make walls of fire?  Teleport without error?  Cast ice storm?  Gate in lesser demons?"

"I think she said something about shadows," Elizabeth said.

"Have you tried anything?" Carly asked.

"No, I'm worried about hurting someone," Elizabeth said.

"You could try using shadows to drain a squirrel!" said Carly.  "Oh, or vanish and reappear!  Or go invisible!  Or..."

"You seem really excited about this," Elizabeth said.

"Well, yeah," said Carly.  "It's SO COOL!"

"MY ancestor said I'm going to have people hunting me now," Elizabeth said.

"Okay, that part might be tricky," said Carly.  "So what are you going to do about it?"

"I don't know. Do you know a place I could maybe practice this stuff?" Elizabeth asked. "I think I should."

Carly considered.

"How about the soccer field?" she asked.  "There's lots of times when it's not in use."

"Hmm. It'd probably have to be after dark so no one sees me do it...," Elizabeth said.

"Well, can't you hide in shadows or something to practice?" Carly asked.

"I suppose we can try that," Elizabeth said.

"Let's try that after school!" said Carly, excited.

"I suppose that'd work," Elizabeth said.

"So cool!" said Carly.

School was dead ahead.  And Elizabeth had horns and a tail.

Not much she could do about that, she just had to head inside.

Carly intercepted her on the way to school.

"So," she said.  "How are you today?"

"I'm good," Elizabeth said.

"So no weird messages from the mirror or anything?" Carly asked.

"No, but since things went well, I'm feeling great," Elizabeth said.

"Good, good," said Carly.  "...do I smell peaches?"

"How though? There was a bag of peach pastries on the apartment door this morning and I ate one," Elizabeth said.

"Still smelling them," said Carly.

Perception

...actually, there was a distinct smell of peaches in the air.

"That's weird. I smell it too," Elizabeth said.

"So should I mention that there's another girl walking up to you with this serious look on her face?" Carly asked.  "Because, you know..."

Elizabeth looked over at the girl.

There was, indeed, a very pretty girl walking right up to Elizabeth.  She had flowers in her hair.  Lots and lots of them.  She was very tall, and there was something distinctive about her... and she smelled strongly of peaches.

"Hello," Elizabeth said. "Do I know you?"

"I would think you do," she said, smiling brightly.  "I certainly know you!"

"Are you referring to my past self?" Elizabeth said.

"You, in other words," she said.  "Yes.  I know very well who you are, and what you're capable of."

"Now hold on, I'm a different person now," Elizabeth said.

"Are you?" said the girl.  "And what will you become?  And what have you already done?  I think there's more going on than chance, here..."

"What are you talking about?" Elizabeth asked.

"You've defeated a mighty one already," said the Flower Girl, "in your own clever way.  You say you aren't your old self, but is that really true?"

"Yes, of course it is!" Elizabeth said.

"But why should I believe that?" asked the Flower Girl.  "Given that you already tamed a dragon, for example."
