Here is the Starter Questions Grid. Based on your stats, you'll have three questions to ask of everyone else.

And here is the google doc where I will place setting details and record the adventure so far for easy reference.

[edited to make Sparky more of a newcomer]
Sparky

Sparky likes to burn stuff.  On the Barge, he has basically found a career in burning off the stuff that even the Barge riff-raff don't want.  Can't keep everything, you know.  Some stuff just needs to go up in smoke to make room for more treasure.  Doesn't hurt that it's fun to watch.

Not that he's been at it long.  The burning town on the Barge caught his eye from the riverbank, and seeing as how things were not going anywhere obviously good on land for him, he figured it was time for a change.

Sparky is a wiry young man in his mid-20's, though he hasn't aged especially well.  You'd be forgiven for thinking he was 40 at first glance.  He has long greasy blond locks in sort of a mullet.  Not that he has a "do" - it's business up front and party in the back just because he uses his nasty-looking knife, which he hammered crudely from a broken box-end wrench, to cut his bangs out of the way when they get too annoying.  He's got light grey eyes and a porn-star mustache.

Sparky does not believe in sleeves.  They just get riddled with holes from stray cinders anyway.  He's quite good with his hands and sometimes people ask him to fix things.  Nothing big and complicated - just household items and tools and such.  He's not a Barge Engineer or anything.

In his spare time, Sparky is trying to invent a crossbow that shoots flaming stuff.  So far, he has not been successful.  Mainly this consists of taking his little pistol crossbow and dipping the bolts in fire oil.  They usually blow out long before arriving at the target and he's not yet worked out how to get around this.  Still freaks out the raccoons, though.  In the meantime, he's recently taken up the dangerous pastime of making fireworks out of gunpowder and rare earth metal filings from the Barge's toolworks and apothecary.

Every once in a while, the drifts of Barge waste turn up some real finds - like old bits of plastic from Before.  When they can't be melted down and used for things, the odd bits can be burned to make the best tattoo ink.  Sparky's arms are covered in spidery black designs commemorating events in his life that really only make sense to him.

Sparky is a bit prickly in disposition and is a polarizing character. Some people really like him and some people really don't.  There is a contingent that thinks he provides a valuable and essential service.  There is another contingent that considers him a nuisance and an arsonist.  The latter might go so far as to suggest the Barge would be better off if rats like him found themselves drowned occasionally, you know?

Excellent.

Note: Sparky seems to be an inhabitant of the Barge, and that's grand, I was initially sort of imagining that the adventure starts with you all finding your way onto the Barge for the first time -- coming aboard and signing up, for whatever reason (fleeing the past, seeking out something...)  -- so that you'd all be discovering its various strange locations together.

If Sparky remains a longtime resident, it would be good if his travels on the Barge have thus far been somewhat constrained. (It's fine if you were born on the Barge if you've so far never left your home trashheap, because that will have the same effect of everyone discovering the things together. But I think it's better if no one is a well-traveled old barge hand who would be expected to know lots of stuff already, just because Into the Odd is, as it says on the tin, partly about exploring the unknown.)

So perhaps pick a place in the upper barge and declare that Sparky has never really left it other than to fetch things from the toolworks? Or, feel free to edit a little to make Sparky a relative newcomer, albeit one who has quickly found himself in flaming crossbows...

Nobody saw KC turn up—they were just there, sitting on a rusty mooring bollard, watching the tugs nudge the barge into dock. A smallish figure with wire-rimmed glasses, short bleached hair growing out black, tattoos of playing cards and topless lamias.

From the stained cargo pants and the steel-toed boots, the dirty tank top that might have been white once, the “musket” made from galvanized steel pipe and held together with duct tape, you’d be forgiven for thinking KC’s always lived on the barge.

But the black nylon pullover with the broken zipper tied around their waist has a Vanderbilt University star on the chest, and one of the tattoos on their left calf is an outline of the state of Michigan.

And in the cracked leather satchel with the button accordion is the dog-eared draft of a doctoral dissertation in environmental management.

Mila

Mila is the bastard daughter of a Heap King, however due to her illegitimacy she was kicked (quite literally) off the Barge as an infant. She was found floating in the Deep by an old salvage diver from a nearby coastal tribe. He named her Mila meaning “to drown” and brought her back to the tribe.

Mila is 19 years old but could be mistaken for younger due to her weak frame and sheltered, mostly indoor life. She has had poor health her whole life stemming from when she nearly drowned as an infant. She has naturally white hair that the old man insisted she keep short so it could fit in a diving helmet (not that she ever went with him, the Deep always freaked her out). She is quite pale and has light gray/blue eyes giving her a ghostlike look. The tattoos she has had since infancy depict a snake wrapped around each arm and insignia made of gears across her collarbone. Though they took her in, her features made it clear she was not from the tribe.

The old man was frequently away on dives, so she took to drawing the salvage he retrieved. He brought back a lot of scrap from the Deep mostly to sell, but he kept the things from Before in a case in the attic and whispered to them at night. Though that was normal behavior for her tribe, it didn’t help her fear of the Deep. With all the salvage around she learned a thing or two about tinkering with mechanics and enjoys turning useless scrap into equally useless little mechanical friends.

Mila noticed from a young age that despite having hardly any life experience and little to no real skills, people listen to her. She found that changing the way you act around different people is a good way to get what you want and has a tendency to emulate the personality traits of those around her.

Though the people of her tribe are lovely, when the old man passed away Mila felt there wasn’t much left for her there.  She decided to take the old man’s prized possession from Before with her when she left: a large rusted piece of metal he called a “hellbird” or something.  It’s probably a weapon but it's way too heavy for her to swing. She took it because it looks cool and it reminds her of the old man and her tribe. She is currently using it as a bindle. On her journey to the Barge she added metal scrap to her tribal garb in an attempt at makeshift armor, and without the ability or knowledge to wield most weapons she has taken to using a fake pistol and theatrics to avoid conflict.

Dol got a job on the barge as a mechanic. He’s actually a terrible mechanic; his parents run a repair shop and tried to train him to be one, but he’s terrible with his hands and never had much interest in it. His true passion is music. Ever since he got his hands on an old ipod with a solar charger, he’s fallen in love with old music. The Beatles, Michael Jackson, JoJo Siwa… all the classics. He would go out into the streets on his day off and sing at the top of his lungs. In the beginning people would pay him just to shut up, but after a while, he’d gotten good enough that people would tolerate it. Much later, people started paying him cause they actually liked his music. Once the whole town was sick of all the songs on his ipod, he began to write his own. A year ago, he had raised enough money to buy a drum. His dream was to become a travelling musician, or even join a band, so when he heard that the barge was coming into town, he stole a pistol and some mechanical equipment and got aboard, eager to start a new life.

Does Mila actually have an artificial lung, like, that she breathes with? Or is it part of the scrap she's carting around?

So it seems that Dol, Mila, Sparky and KC know each other, even though they're all new to the barge. They may have known each other before boarding, or only met briefly since they got here -- but fate has begun to throw them together.

Before we figure out exactly where they are as the story starts, let's ask the questions of one another.

Each of you has three questions to ask, and three other PCs to ask them of, so that works out.

Post your question along with who it's addressed to. For instance, Sparky has A=1, B=2, so he might decide to ask his first question of KC and post "KC, what do you admire me for?"

And then KC would post in response.

Feel free to invent other details of the world in the process of answering these questions, or propose out aspects of how you've met one another -- but nothing is set in stone at this point, and details should be negotiated. So if KC says "I admire you for your ability to do handstands" and Andy feels like that doesn't fit Sparky's vibe, he can ask for emendation...

I will tell you, one thing I do NOT believe in is no sleeves.  Fuckers catch fire too easy.  What do I believe in?  Can't say I really thought about it before.  I guess I believe in myself.  Nobody else ever did much worth believing in.  I ain't never been in no believer groups neither, like no Brotherhood of Light bullshit or like that, if that's what you're after.  Scary brainwashed fuckers.  I believe in cause and effect, is what I believe in.  I do something, some shit goes down, it's on me.  Good or bad.  "Do unto others and then split" is what my scumbag old man used to say.  I don't mean it like that.  But I'd rather be the do-er just the same, you know what I mean?

My idea of making it big in this world is finding where I'm from and hopefully they will welcome me back and the whole thing of me ending up not on the barge was an accident. Things don't usually seem to work out like that though and I get the feeling from these tattoos that everything here on the Barge could be a bit tougher than I'm used to. Sparky basically breathes machines and KC is KC so I get the feeling they can protect themselves, and more importantly me, but Dol is just so... flamboyant. I don't dislike the guy but he tends to attract attention to himself and I'm just not sure that's the best thing for my survival.

I ran.  And I've stayed on the move.  Kind of afraid if I stay in one place I'll get "habits."  I'll need to set up shop, have schemes.  That kind of shit is what made my old man such a scumbag.  He was (is? I just assume he's dead by now) a very minor lore pusher who ran his little mafia out of a depressing shack next to a literal shit-lagoon.  I didn't want to end up like that.  Not that I'm "destined for great things" or anything.  I just want to stay free and be able to sleep at night.  And besides, I do have one habit.  I like to watch stuff burn.  No other way to say it.  That is not an activity that engenders loving feelings in every community I visit.  Kinda makes it necessary to stay in motion.

In reply to Andy's Character (msg # 14):

The first weeks on the barge, I was struggling. I had used my parent's reputation as the best mechanics in town to get on board, but now everyone expect me to be a good mechanic. In fact, I'm mediocre at best. About a week into my stay at the barge, Captain Thal, a tugboat captain, asked me to fix their compass, which had stopped pointing north. I was nervous because I'd never fixed a compass before, and when I'm nervous, my palms sweat. So, while I was trying to open the casing, the compass slipped out of my sweaty hands and crashed on the floor.
As I lay on the floor, sobbing, terrified of what would happen next - Captain Thal would be outraged and they weren't exactly known for keeping their temper - Sparky approached. Having seen what happened, he peered at the shattered compass, and seeing that the damage done to it was irreparable, set it on fire.
"Wuh- What did you do that for?" I asked, confused.
"You're new here," He said. "You don't want get on Thal's bad side. I already am, they'd expect this from me." By taking the blame for my mistake, Sparky probably saved my life.
I'm still a very clumsy mechanic, so I'm sure to have more problems along the way, but maybe Sparky can teach me to be better.

Alex's Character:
Dol - What do you believe in?

As soon as I was old enough to hold a drill, I had to work in the shop as much as possible. I hated working in the shop. I didn't blame my parents - we had to make ends meet after all - but I didn't enjoy it at all. Every day, I would wake up, work, eat, work, eat, sleep, repeat. It's not like I didn't have any free time, but I didn't have much, and I didn't know what to do then. I didn't see the point in anything. My parents - and most of the village - felt the same.
That all changed when I found music. I would listen to music during work until the ipod ran out of battery. I would have charge it for the rest of the day, but the songs stayed in my head and I would keep singing or humming it for the rest of the day.  Whenever I listened to music, I wondered what it would be like to live back then, in the golden age. Of course, I only knew what I heard from the songs, but it seemed like a time full of love, happiness, and adventure. It gave me hope. Life wasn't pointless, it wasn't bound to stay like this forever.
I believe in hope. I believe in love. I believe in adventure. But most of all, I believe in music, and it's power to spread joy.

Lots of people know that KC was suspended from their graduate program. A few people know why -- that KC wrote a paper for an undergraduate student, in a course KC was TAing. That to keep from getting expelled, KC had to say they were sorry, to the university and to the Graduate Honor Council. What no one knows, except KC and Mila:

KC to Mila: "That I'm not sorry. That I'd do it again tomorrow."

KC to Mila: "How did you learn to do that thing? You know, the thing."

KC to Sparky: "What makes you think you're so much better than me?"
