Young kids don't use Face Book or Instagram, They're used by people 30ish and up. Phones don't even work for apps. Conspiracy theories already about it.

I know teenagers that use Facebook. It may not be all, or even most of them, but there are certainly some.

Re Orisons --

That was me blurring editions.  And Astrid reflecing she can tell the difference between arcane and divine magic.

I think Dragon may have introduced some clerical orisons, for AD&D - that were the basis for the later editions.   But, I don't think they were ever in any 1st (or 2nd) edition manual.

Gilli's still working the room in the first inn -- any luck?

Piestar:
"How about you, Gilli, any interesting tales of life in the lands of your people? Or did you always live with humans?"

OOC: Sorry, getting a bit confused here. Is she coming to the table where Gilli is trying to engage the locals in conversation and find out any leads on what has been happening locally? Or is she talking to Minnie while they are still in the bathhouse? (Easy to confuse us short folks with one another, I know, though Minnie has the most amazing set of . . . well, enough of that, she'd clip my ear if I told you any more. Though I guess you've seen for yourself by now.)

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

For some reason I started watching some videos discussing and explaining the worlds of Tolkien. Good stuff, for me it was the source of much of my early D&D mindset, so it is really enjoyable.

Probably not true in Greyhawk, but I was always fascinated to learn that the Orcs were corrupted Elves.

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

I remember that bit.  His original orcs were different than what D&D did.   I was always unclear where the pig snouts came from.

In my earliest rpg days, my brother thrust Tolkien's novels at me as required reading material.  I never was able to get into his books, but would never deny his importance, and how good his world/cosmology building was!

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

I fall halfway I guess, I love the Hobbit and the Trilogy (in book form, not the movies) but anything else of his I tried to read was dry and not enjoyable.

I think the pig snouts might have come as part of the need to be more different from Tolkein, or get sued by his estate, much the way hobbits had to become Halflings.

The videos are fun though, because someone else did the hard work of digesting the lore, and his letters, the Silmarillion (sp?) and all that and explains it neatly and cleanly.

It does sharpen my appetite for roleplaying.

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

That's true, they did (do) have to watch the infringement.    Someone mentioned recently that TSR had some issues with that in the 80s, in fact.

Moorcock's novels were next, and those resonated more for me.  But, it's the kind of thing you outgrow pretty quick, though I still like (and even use) some of his concepts.

Eventually I found the works of a novelist named CJ Cherryh.   Her stuff bowled me over, influenced me like crazy, and still underlays all the writing/character work/world building I do today.

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

I think I read some of her stuff. But my mind is a jumble of dozens of authors, from Asimov, to Zelazny. I particularly like some of Martha Wells early stuff.

Re: OOC Chatter (1)

Her I don't know --  but I agree, it's a long parade of authors, at this point!

And the legion only gets ever more humongous, since it's much easier to publish now.  Speaking of electronic formats, I mean.
